I tried looking trough the forums for an answer but I couldn't find it.
I want to try and dual boot Linux with my Mac but I'm not exactly sure how . This was my brothers computer then he gave it to me but he said that I MUST leave OSX installed. And uh.... He was dual-booting Vienna on it but I don't like Vienna so I want to get rid of that and put Ubuntu on.
Basically I have a Macbook Air 3,1 and I decided to install ubuntu on it through the bootcamp partitioner. I installed Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal and got it up and running on the bootcamp partition (just Ubuntu - no windows) with a bit of help from refit. Here's my problem: the 2 OSs are working great but I want some integration via virtualization. I have VMWare Fusion and I think I should be able to use the physical Ubuntu installation inside a virtual machine. Near as I can tell the only problem is that I can't mount the bootcamp drive in OS X. Disk Utility sees it as a corrupt FAT32 partition and my attempts to mount it with either gui or command line are failing. Is it possible to use a bootcamp drive like this? if so, how can I mount it?

The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition.
The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows. Does this mean I first ahve to reformat the disk to fat32/nfts and can then resize or is something fishy going on here? Or can I just increase my mac partition using disk utility (erasing the linux partition) without having to reinstall OS X?
I was running Ubuntu 11.04 next to Windows 7 but lost my DualBoot after re-installing my Windows 7 using a backup image. The Ubuntu Partition (/dev/sdb5) is unchanged. Windows 7 comes with a default Bootmanager Partition (dev/sdb1) in size of 105MB. Here my system (2 Harddisks)

after fresh f12 install says reboot & i do... no boot menu, boots xp. there's probably a solution, but i don't know it. someone know how to get around this?
View 10 Replies View RelatedI tried to update one of my home machines with a fresh install. This is far from new to me so I did not expect any problem. But I was proven wrong. First: did install the system as usual. First anomaly: system blocked during the install process but did restart it flawlessly one I tried to eject the DVD from the player. It needed actually that intervention to retake working. It then went to install and froze during the first system start. I rebooted with failsafe settings, it then correctly configured. I reached a beautiful desktop. I performed the updates from the update repository and I joined the nvidia proprietary driver repository (which updated to the G02 driver).
I then rebooted the machine and now I am in trouble. In normal mode the system (dual boot Opensuse, XP) does not boot at all and freezes immediately after hitting enter as before. In safe mode it goes further but does not reach X anymore. It blocks with the following line statement: "system console stolen at line 266". I then tried "startx". But the system goes into a scrolling loop that does not allow me to read the output. how to get at least the error message of the loop? I read some line passing by that the system might have an X11 authorization problem.

I am new to linux , I installed Suse 11.3 a week ago on my new iMac 27'' core i7 and my experience have been wonderful so far. However I would like to install windows beside Suse (for games and windows only apps). I used bootcamp to create a 200G partition for Suse, and I would like to partition the bootcamp further to install windows beside Suse, and choose the OS at boot time using rEFIt. I searched google and couldn't find a guide for installing windows 7 when linux is installed first.
1- I want to learn how to partition the boot camp drive using suse to create an empty partition for windows install.
2- I want to learn how to install windows 7 on the mentioned partition without harming any boot configurations, as I said I want to be able to choose from the OSes at boot time using rEFIt bare in mind that the current installed OSes are suse 11.3 and OS X.
Is there soemthing like bootcamp which can be run by linux? Because if i can use "bootcamp" to create a windows partition . Then i would be able to use my windows recovery disc

View 6 Replies View RelatedI installed a new, clean hard drive into my old iMac G5, and decided to finally set up a linux machine, I installed Ubuntu 9.10 with the 64bit mac software, and the instal went very smooth, however now there are a few hardware issues.First, the cd/dvd drive loads disks, but the system does not recognize anything inserted, and wont play any media. Second, the built in airport card doesnt want to work either, I can see the icon for wireless at the top right of the screen and it lets me plug in my network name and security, but wont connect or see any wireless networks at all, however, ethernet works fine, and it is how I am able to get online now. Lastly, the screen is slightly shifted to the right and the far right of the screen wraps around to the left side of the screen, its not major, probably a 1/4 of an inch, but it is annoying.
I am sure these are likely driver issues, but when I go to Administration, and Hardware Drivers it does not say I need any drivers. and when I run through "system testing" it says that this version of ubuntu is not genuine, or something like that, but I just burned the install disk last night from ubuntu's website.
I've been using Ubuntu on my PCs and laptops for quite a while. Recently, I've been allocated a Mac for use in my lab. It is a PowerPC G5 running on Mac OS X 10.4.11. I've installed Ubuntu on one of the two hard disks available, the other one being the disk which Mac is installed in. There was no problems with the installation, but I cannot get Ubuntu to boot. Basically, when I restart the system, it boots into Mac straight away.
There is no boot loader or GRUB. I've tried holding down the options key when the system starts, but for some unknown reasons, the monitor cannot find a signal, so I cannot see what is going on. The monitor can only pick up a signal after Mac starts to boot (or, when I was installing Ubuntu, after the virtual Ubuntu has loaded). Am I suppose to expect GRUB or some other boot loader?
Looks like 10.10 will have grub2 and so the ability to boot on efi system. I have a macbook pro 6.2.Will maverick install on this machine as normal dual boot with no need of refit support?

I would like to still be able to access my Mac Documents directory from within Ubuntu, so I can have a common directory that both systems can access. Right now, however, I am unable to do that. It looks like it might be a permissions issue- ie I am a different 'user' on both systems, so I don't have access to my Mac files. Is there a way to have the same 'user' account for both systems? If not, could a common 'group' be created in both systems that both of my 'user' accounts have access to?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI successfully installed Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid on my relatively new iMac 21.5 10,1, but have been unsuccessful in running the upgrade to 10.10 Maverick Meerkat in the normal mode. It appears that the system freezes and/or does not recognize input from either the wireless mouse (aka magic mouse) or keyboard. However, I am able to boot in the recovery/failsafe mode.
I previously attempted to install from a live CD, etc., but the same thing happens, regardless of the type of install I've tried. Has anyone who has had the same problem found a fix to boot in the normal mode?
I can't seem to get my system to recognize my 24" Apple LED Cinema Display (DisplayPort) with a ASRock Z68 Pro3-M motherboard (i7 2600k, 1.40 firmware) using the iGPU/DisplayPort running Ubuntu 11.04 2.6.38-10-generic with latest updates. The system boots and runs (can ssh into it) but there is no display. The same system running Windows 7 x64 works fine. A DVI monitor also works fine. Xserver-intel driver sees the display but can't set any modes for it.

I have an external hard drive that needs to be readable and writable between MacOSX, Ubuntu, and Windows. I also need to work with files over 4gb in size (which can't be done with Fat32, which happens to work with all 3 OS's) I tried MacOS journaled, that didnt work. Before I start reformatting and doing a bunch of guess and check, I wanted to know if the answer was known.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently installed ubuntu studio 9.10 amd64 on my MBP 5,3 I need an internet connection for updates and to customise my system etc I tried to connect with a wired connection but for some reason I could not configure the ethernet interface. I tried to install the broadcom bcmwl-kernel-source driver by downloading it on another computer and then using a usb stick to transfer it. I had to go through installing several dependencies including dkms and linux-headers-generic. When I finally succeeded the driver showed up in Hardware privers as proprietry but was inactive. Whenever I try to active it I hit 'Activat' I authenticate and the nothing happens. It remains inactive. The wired connection is not readily available to me so it would be great if it was possible to solve this either via a usb or cd.

but when I try to add community repos it comes up with errors. And while running a system check it says I have no internet connection...
I'm connected through ethernet on a router wich works with the g5 in the other room running osx, and the pc upstairs running ubuntu meerkat. Now I had this same problem with SUSE 11.1 and worked around it by adding through terminal but I was never able to add from the GUI.
I currently have an old powermac 7220/200 with all ehe origanl stuff except for the hard drive which is now a slightly larger one. I was wondering if it was possible to set up a ubuntu installation on it using a 20g hard drive (I have got one of these going on a 486 running win98, just) and be able to run mac os as a dual boot system, possibly with 9.1 and the origanal mac os that come with it? Unfortunantly I cannot connect this computer to any internet even if I had a card that was compatible with mac os.

I deleted that partition (32 GB), resized my Mac partition back up to (250 GB), and then reduced it to 200 GB and created a new one with 50 GB via BootCamp to install Windows 7 from a DVD that I burnt (I got a Windows executable from MSDNAA that I used with Wine to obtain the ISO image. Insert rant about having to download Windows with a Windows executable here.).
I've tried burning two different DVDs. I used Burn on my Mac to burn a data DVD+R with the HFS+ and Joliet filesystems (I think) and then tried again with the ISO9660 and UDF filesystems. The latter has not shown any signs of working besides mounting on OS X. The first DVD would not boot whenever I held 'C' down at time of boot. So I went into BootCamp and clicked "Start Installation". It restarted my computer and this is where the real confusion comes up. I think that it tried booting via the empty partition. The reason I say this is that there are remnants of GRUB and when I boot, I get a screen that says this: error: unknown filesystemrub rescue>

View 9 Replies View RelatedUbuntu and Vista dual boot with grub being the primary bootloader. So, I just updated 10.04 today and when a window appeared asking things something along the lines of where to install grub, I didn't know what to do. So after reading the help box say that if you're not sure (which I was not) to click all of them, I did just that. Now when I go to the vista option in grub all that appears is a blinking cursor followed by bleak disheartening nothing until restarting. I can boot into ubuntu just fine and can still mount the windows partition from inside of ubuntu, but cannot boot Vista.
I had read other threads that usually asked for the user to run "sudo fdisk -l", to which the results are:

I have recently installed OpenSuse with GRUB boot-loader on my Vaio FW series laptop. I had to uninstall it because it caused Windows 7 to be unable to hibernate. I installed other distros (Fedora 11 and others) and the same problem recurred. This lead me to the conclusion that the problem is with the boot-loader (as my research suggested)..It has been months now, and I have not found any proper solutions to this yet. Linking this to Ubuntu, I recently downloaded and burned Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, however, I am still reluctant to install it until I know a solution is available. Has anyone had Linux-Windows 7 dualboot and also faced problems with hibernation/stand-by?

The box will primarily be used for ubuntu, but my GF also wants to stream Netflix on it. (I have not been able to sell her on the Amazon Instant Video--yet, anyway.) Since Netflix doesn't run on Linux, I need to install a Windows or OSX. I have media for w7 and wXP. I'm planning to install w7 on it, just because that's newer. Is there a reason to install wXP instead for this usecase?
Given w7, I can choose to dualboot or virtualize. I'm told the Atom doesn't virtualize well, so I'm planning to dualboot. I'm told that, when dualbooting linux and windows, one wants to partition first, then install windows, then install linux, so I'm planning to do that.
