After many tries I "succeed" (with internet) in solving partially the issue related to the video chipset (Intel 82845G Graphics) by using a "vesa" driver in the xorg.conf. Some discussion here mentioned the possibility of deleting ASCI 8086:2562 from a blacklist in usr/bin/compiz but even with ghex editor I could not find any matching string. Hereafter my grub and xorg.conf for those who are interested. I have another issue now. How can I create an iso file of my installed xubuntu. I did download ubuntu 10.10 and created a CD but I migrated after to xubuntu (since most of the files were there) and it would be great to burn a CD of xubuntu.

I just got my internet working through the wireless card with some help. However, my downloading speeds are beyond extremely slow. While I type on this computer, I am downloading things @ ~500-700kb/s, but when I try to download the package updates etc for my Ubuntu 9.10 laptop, It downloads @ ~ 4k b/s- which is UNBEARABLY slow, putting me at 14h left to complete a 200 mb update. View 8 Replies View RelatedHas anyone got Ubuntu 10.04 working on their Dell Inspiron 1100? Most of the time, the screen goes black a short time after boot. Sometimes it goes black right after the splash screen, sometimes I get to log in and then it goes black a little later. Same results when trying to boot into "safe graphics" mode. Ubuntu 7.10 works fine on this machine (although I had to do some special configuration in xorg.conf to get it to work way back when I installed it.) However, it does not appear to be possible to manually configure X in 10.04. I tried disabling the splash screen in grub based on suggestions I found for other Ubuntu versions, but that had no effect on the problem.
Is it possible to replace X with the most recent version that could still be manually configured? Would anyone know how to go about doing that?
Alternatively, if it's impossible to get this old machine to run new versions of Ubuntu, has anyone had success with (relatively) new versions of other distros on it?
i updated my nvidia driver im running ultimate gamers edition 2.6 and now it only boots as far as terminal 1. i am a newbie and am completely lost. of course i have searched google high and low and seems to be a common problem however i have tried editing the xconf/xorg cnt remeber the name iv tried using the restore mode which is second on the boot list and have tried using the live cd to boot into graphics mode none seem to do the trick through using the live cd or something as the commands for the terminal are a pain for me also i would put up the xconf file up but i only no how to view it through the cd i dnt no how to copy it to usb to place on here
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm running the ubuntu based Green OS and cant get my video card properly configured. i've already gone through the forums to figure out what i need to do to get my ATI card working but my system wont let me access the xorg.conf file. i can see it using the the GOS file editor but it wont let me save the modifications. when i attempt to edit from a terminal window with su privelages it tells me that /etc/x11/xorg.conf does not exist. i've even tried booting into recovery mode and using the root instead of the sudo command. nothing i've tried will let me open the file.

I'm using my 1 HDMI port, and my BIOS doesn't recognize the monitor on boot up. Also, my xorg.conf file is not configured for this monitor. My question is what should my xorg.conf look like? I have a bit of a start on it(see attached) but it is not quite right. How do I set up the Toshiba as the default screen, in order to use this monitor when Linux starts? Other info: I use Debian 5.0 with Gnome.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm testing a new PC and for business reasons it has to be able to run with Ubuntu 8.04 .The first problem I had was with the Intel GMA 4500 graphics driver. I have managed to resolve that and can now get resolutions > 800x600. However since then the mouse pointer is intermittently corrupt. I've attached an image showing the corrupt pointer which is about the size of a thumbnail.The driver I have installed is xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.4.0~melchiorre-5_i386.deb .I've also attached a copy of my xorg.conf file.While I've been writing this post I've noticed that if I take a screenshot or if I connect to the PC using VNC the entire screen is corrupt.
View 1 Replies View Relatedi installed kubuntu 9.04 yesterday and updated it with everything that was available, i have ati radeon xpress 1100 and i got everything running fine including kwin effects but i have a small problem i cant figure out how to fix:
When i run glxgears and put any window on top of it, i can still see the 3d gears rolling and i think this same problem is responsible for occasional artifacts on the screen. Its a very minor problem but i would like to see if fixed because i cannot use google earth properly, it seems that any 3d application likes to be focused on the screen, its like they flicker while being overlaid on top of everything.
Also i read the countless threads here complaining about not being able to use fglrx etc because of updated xorg. Well the reason im using 9.04 is because my wireless card alfa awus036h does not work with kernel > 2.6.31 and i have already tried kubuntu 9.10 on this laptop i wasnt having any problem with the display. All the kwin effects ran fine and no distortions of any kind. Seems there is some bug in 9.04.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an Aspire 5100 with ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 and have been happily running Ubuntu 8.10 until now when support has ended. I continued with 8.10 because the graphics have been fine with my system.I also have 10.10 installed and apart from the graphics, I would have no problem changing/upgrading.The problem is the glare, after a while it is very hard to work on.Is there anything I can do that's not to technical to reduce the glare.

I am stuck in 800x576 resolution and don't know how to escape. I've tried changing xorg.conf but that caused my machine to grind to a halt and I had to copy the original .conf file back over before I could launch GNOME again. I've run lspci | grep VGA, and this is what I get:

The only problem I've had so far seems to be a common one but I haven't found a specific solution for a dell inspiron 700m. I have sound through the headphones but not through the laptop internal speakers. I've played with the alsamixer settings endlessly but no success, and I'm 99% sure that it's not an issue with the hardware or speaker wiring. I suspect I need to add an 'options snd-hda-intel model=xxxxx' line to alsa-base but not sure what argument to use.

I'm trying to find a program where I can edit some hd mkv files. I want to cut pieces of them out and put them together. I was using avidemux but when I went to save it again it said I needed the start point to be a keyframe. It allowed me to save it as an avi, but the color was distorted. I am fine with using avidemux if I can get around this keyframe problem.
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy brother has just installed 9.10 on his Inspiron 6400 and would like to have a dual screen setup using both the laptop display and a flatscreen attached to the VGA socket. Using the standard display options, the two displays are recognised and when the 'mirror screens' option is disabled then settings applied it works to the extent of allowing the cursor to move between the two monitors; however the monitors display nothing except a black screen and the cursor.
I've updated everything to the current version, had a look for restricted drivers (none are suggested by the GUI tool thing) and checked both displays work (both independently and as mirrored). I also had a look for an xorg.conf to poke around in but there wasn't one there.
I am trying to use JACK for some audio applications, but I have had no success until now I'am using Ubuntu 10.04 on my Dell Inspiron 6400. Kernel 2.6.32-33.

Okay I've got a Netgear N-150 WNA 1100 USB WiFi adapter, it doesn't work in Ubuntu it's not supported. There should be a way to make it work with ndiswrapper. I tried and failed before and due to other non related circumstances I had to reinstall Ubuntu. What are the steps to install ndiswrapper and it's dependency's on a fresh Ubuntu installation that cannot connect to the internet.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've just installed brand new Debian 6 on an oldish Dell Inspiron 5160 laptop. This features an XGI Volari XP5 video card, which I can see reported in /var/log/Xorg.0.log.
When Debian boots it will only run in command line mode. Running startx hangs up the whole system and just displays a black screen with a few vertical stripes in different colours of dark green.
the default vesa driver for X.org doesn't play very well with the XGI video card.
I've tried running
X -configure
then
X -config /root/xorg.conf.new
This correctly detects the XGI Volari XP5 card (if you look through the xorg.conf) but running the second X command still hangs up the system.
X runs fine under Knoppix, but most recent Ubuntu distros I've tried actually hung up after the initial text-based startup section, so presumably died as soon as X started up. Debian's graphical installer worked fine, however.

Edit: If you skip down to post #16 you'll see I discovered it actually isn't a matter of editing a .mov file, but it turns out I don't have a properly exported quicktime .mov file. Instead I have (I'm not sure but I think its iMovie ver. 4.) 1) an .iMovieProj text file that lists the cuts by frame in and frame out, 2) an .mov file that isn't the complete file I thought it was and 3) a folder of all the clips that are in Apple's Quicktime DV format. In this thread people taught me about transcoding from the Apple's Quicktime DV format to liberated formats easier to work with. Given this knowledge and since I have a list of the cuts I'm asking if people could recommend a Linux video editor that would be easy to enter the tedious frame in, frame out info so I could reassemble the video.
I've been transferring a bunch of VHS and old camcorder tapes to video files. I've noticed that some of these videos need color correction or sharpening, etc. Most of the linux video editing software out there is just for splicing videos together.Does Linux have any professional grade video editing software? Is there anyway for me to color correct some of these videos using Linux? I've been searching forums trying to find an answer. Anyone have an recommendations?If not, what are some good Windows based alternatives? I can always run an alternative in a Windows VM.

create documentation with screenshots that have stuff on them indicated with arrows, circles, highlighted areas and the likes. I attemped to use the Gimp for this, but found out the app is clrealy not intended for such use. Then I tried LibreOffice draw, but it seems page-orientated, saving a whole bunch of whitespace I don't want after I imported an image and put stuff on top of it. A few quick searches did not yield anything looking very promising. So I'm looking for image editing apps in which doing these kind of simple operations is trivial, or even apps geared towards such tasks.

I am thinking of doing a fresh install of Ubuntu and I was wondering what was the best way to get the most out of Ubuntu when it comes to video editing. Ubuntu always seems..... crappy when it comes to video editing, I've heard it's because of the watered down video codecs. But I have updated my ffmpeg and abunch of other stuff but most video editors are still very buggy when it comes to encoding.
