Dec 30, 2010I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 with the Kubuntu desktop environment. I'm trying to use my MIDI keyboard through ALSA, Linuxsampler and Qsampler. But I still haven't got a sound out of it, and I fear that the information about the existence of the keyboard doesn't get through. That, or I don't know how to configure properly.
In sndstat, both my sound card (Guitar Rig) and my keyboard (Hua Xing) is showing up:

Feb 20, 2010I have a problem playing MIDI files on my system: I tried opening two MIDI files in Audacious, VLC, Aqualung and Rhythmbox, and Rhythmbox is the only one that will play them:
- Audacious crashes when clicking on the file in the playlist (immediately disappears)
- Aqualung doesn't add them to its playlist
- VLC produces an error msg saying it can't play MIDI
- Rhythmbox plays a MIDI file and immediately crashes at its end
I'm on Ubuntu Karmic 64 and have timidity installed.

The only problem I still have now is that I can not play midi files on my piano through Ubuntu. to play my midi files on the piano. In ubuntu 9.1 I can play the midi but only through the laptop. It does not get sent to the piano. I'm new to Linux but can follow direction. Hate to be going back to windows. Installing Van Basco through wine keeps crashing and does not work.

Is there anything similar in linux? everything up? I followed different instructions on how to setup Jack to make it work and it can see the keyboard but I wasn't able to get any sound out of it.My computer has the Asus built-in sound card and I also have a separate M-audio Audiophile 192 sound card.

No problem with the head phone indeed. I have searched the forum for N5030 key word. But never able to find one.

Jan 8, 2011The only problem I've had so far seems to be a common one but I haven't found a specific solution for a dell inspiron 700m. I have sound through the headphones but not through the laptop internal speakers. I've played with the alsamixer settings endlessly but no success, and I'm 99% sure that it's not an issue with the hardware or speaker wiring. I suspect I need to add an 'options snd-hda-intel model=xxxxx' line to alsa-base but not sure what argument to use.

Debian Multimedia :: X Crashes Old Dell Inspiron 5160 Laptop?
Feb 12, 2011I've just installed brand new Debian 6 on an oldish Dell Inspiron 5160 laptop. This features an XGI Volari XP5 video card, which I can see reported in /var/log/Xorg.0.log.
When Debian boots it will only run in command line mode. Running startx hangs up the whole system and just displays a black screen with a few vertical stripes in different colours of dark green.
the default vesa driver for X.org doesn't play very well with the XGI video card.
I've tried running
X -configure
then
X -config /root/xorg.conf.new
This correctly detects the XGI Volari XP5 card (if you look through the xorg.conf) but running the second X command still hangs up the system.
X runs fine under Knoppix, but most recent Ubuntu distros I've tried actually hung up after the initial text-based startup section, so presumably died as soon as X started up. Debian's graphical installer worked fine, however.

Mar 22, 2010My brother has just installed 9.10 on his Inspiron 6400 and would like to have a dual screen setup using both the laptop display and a flatscreen attached to the VGA socket. Using the standard display options, the two displays are recognised and when the 'mirror screens' option is disabled then settings applied it works to the extent of allowing the cursor to move between the two monitors; however the monitors display nothing except a black screen and the cursor.
I've updated everything to the current version, had a look for restricted drivers (none are suggested by the GUI tool thing) and checked both displays work (both independently and as mirrored). I also had a look for an xorg.conf to poke around in but there wasn't one there.

Dec 14, 2010I recently purchased a dell inspiron N4010 with windows 7 preloaded...i want to install fedora into it and i want keep it as my primary operasting system.... but what worries me is that the windows setup files is stored in a hidden recovery partion.... So if i install fedora will i lose this ??? if no will i will be able to install windows from that partion?

The good news is that install went greeeeat. But after that, I once again got a black screen with a line randomly done it. Is there a way to change? I tried changing those resolution options but it didn't work. I have the Windoze driver from Dell's site. Its Dell Inspiron 5160.

There is another thing that I haven't ever been able to do in spite of the fact that I have had Slackware installed in my computers since 2002, and this thing is: I have never been able to connect Internet using Slackware or any other Linux distribuition. May 21, 2010I have a 4-5 year old dell inspiron 600m that i have been running on linux ubuntu for the past 2-3 years. Last week i took it apart to paint the casing, got that done and since I put it back together it has a tendency to become very hot. When i got it back together i also installed a good number of updates.
Also, I can no longer stream videos/ music from the internet. I am not sure if i messed something up when i was putting it back together, or if something in these updates has caused a problem. I have always been able to stream on previous installs, and i cannot honestly remember if i could before i took it apart. i am trying to watch a video on ..... and the cpu usage went clear to 100% and the cpu temperature went up to 99 Deg Celcius. The audio and video didnt even match but for a second or two at the very beginning. When the computer is sitting idle browsing the internet the cpu usage is very low, maybe avg. 15% and the temp drops to 55deg C fairly quickly.
