I'm in a bit of a dilemma. I have VLC player running and its becoming increasingly frustrating to have to consistently change my VLC equalizer options as soon as I start the program. Is there a way to save this?
Also, everytime I click on a song that I want to listen to, a new VLC window opens up. Is there a way to be able to click on a song and not have a new window show up, stop the old song, and have the new song play?
On my system, System->Preferences->Software Updates, as best I can determine, completely ignores the "Check for updates: " setting. It looks as if, regardless of what I set, I get daily checks. Is anybody else experiencing this? Anybody got a fix? I like the idea of having the system check for me, so I don't want to just pitch the program.

I've learned how to do that but the only problem is when i go to file/preferences There is no appearance tab. Anybody know how i can fix this, i really want to add some winamp themes to this thing, or at least be able to change some of the appearance.
View 6 Replies View RelatedThe problem is that banshee mutes sound for other apps like flash, the solution is to select alsa for the devices in audio preferences... but don't have that in the list, only "internal audio analog stereo".
This wasn't a problem until i made some updates and got broken sound, to fix it i used the AlsaUpgrade script. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 by the way.
I have a zoom H2 and I intend to use its usb microphone function.I connected it and it seems to work with xvidcap if I declare /dev/audio1 as the input device. Well.I want to go further and use it for other purposes and before installing jack and other applications I would like to understand why it does no longer appear in the "Sound preferences" under the 'input" and "hardware" tabs as it was the case the day before.
View 1 Replies View RelatedDue to some foolishness on my part I have needed to reinstall UT GOTY on my Ubuntu Karmic PC. I have run the loki installer fine and the game runs but every time I load it up I am back to Player as my name and the default video settings. For some reason my changes are not being saved.
The loki readme states that a .loki/ut folder is set up in the ?home folder and this is where all the config is stored. There isnt one shown in Nautilus BUT if i try to create one it says it is already in use. So I had a look through the CLI and got this:

Not sure what this means.
I did note during the install that the shell kept saying it couldnt create the .loki/ut directory but it seems to be there. Can anyone shed some light on how to get my preferences to stick. I have a hankering for some fragging.
I recently manage to make my microphone "work". I open the alsamixer and i unmuted the mic. Easy!!! But as i can hear my voice through the speakers i can't record. Actually i compare the alsamixer with the sound preferences. And what I notice is:
i)When i mute the output volume from the sound icon in the alsamixer is also muted.
ii)The same when I increase or decrease the volume.
iii)But in the input tab if I mute increase or decrease the volume nothing happens!
I can only mute unmute and change volume trhough the alsa mixer!
I use an Fujitsu siemens amilo pa 1510 with ubuntu 10.10 which I install from a pendrive.
I bought a $400 Dell Vostro V130, and decided to put 10.10 netbook remix onto it. (Vostro V130 owners: after the reboot into the new system, there is no GUI. worse, after log in, a startx means the screen goes dead. fortunately, a power key event is still detected, so reboot still works cleanly. after I did a full apt-get update, apt-get dist-upgrade, and apt-get upgrade, the screen and remix worked.)
I would now like to increase the bass, systemwide (so that ..... gets sound that is a little better). the speaker icon on the top right gets me into sound preferences, but I do not see an equalizer.
I am trying to adjust some of the prefrences in Cinelerra 2.15CV, however the bottom of the screen is not visible, and I have no resizing options. What I would like to do is adjust the length of images that are inserted into a slideshow using Cinelerra. Right now I have to resize every image by using the drag handle, but It would be easier to do that with one batch function.
I am running Ubuntu 10.10 on a Asus netbook.If I go to System> Preferences > Monitor the largest resolution available is already selected: 1024X600.I have also tried to adjust the different apperances in System>Apperances I made a video of the issue here:

How do you change the preferences for the video in Gnome Player? All the tabs I see is general, audio,and display but no ' Video '. Is there any way to edit the Video preferences?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI switchted my windows friend over to kubuntu and I installed the kubuntu-restricted-extras as well as the ubuntu-restricted-extras and at first amarok was flawless. Now, every time I quit amarok and reopen it, my media library is still there but when I try and play anything it just stops and does nothing.
Then I go to my /.kde/share/apps/amarok directory and clear it and it works again if I open it and reimport the music, but this is a bitch to do every time. I briefly tried rhythmbox also and it seemed to be suffering from the same problem although I didn't try deleting the preferences and testing if it worked after, it also refused to work after quitting. Note: it might get corrupted on reboot only or on quitting
Is there a way to control the gnome sound preferences widget via the command line? I use optical digital out (IEC95. It works fine. but everytime I reboot there is no sound, I have to go to sound preferences, hardware tab, select my internal audio device, change it from digital stereo duplex to analog surround 5.1, then back to digital stereo duplex, and then the sound works again. I would like to be able to do this via command line so I can write a little startup script and not have to do that every time i reboot.

When I shut down, Lives flushed my entire project because it uses a tmp working directory and places it as default in tmp.Today, I changed the working directory to Video, thinking this would be safe. Instead, the programme quit half-way through editing and I have now lost another good couple of hours.is there any way of saving my project?I can still see the .lay file but there doesn't seem to be any way of opening it.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have to use alsa for audio to work under wine (otherwise pulseaudio starts eating up processor cycles and the audio comes out horrible and distorted), but I have been unable to use the mic. The mic boost is up on the alsa mixer, and they are not muted. I cannot find any options under my system menu for Sound Preferences (which seems to get references in a lot fo help forums), or anywhere else to determine which audio driver the line in on the front uses.
I'm using an Acer laptop from a couple years ago, so support should be no problem.
I can't hear what I'm recording in Audacity. Please can someone help/suggest something helpful to solve this problem? I have tried changing the output in the sound preferences panel but this does not work either. I'm using Lucid Lynx Ubuntu.

View 2 Replies View RelatedCatalyst Control Center (CCC) is not saving the changes I make. I saw a couple of thread about this that had links to instructions on how to install CCC, but it still doesn't work for me.
I start CCC with 'sudo amdcccle' and the GUI appears. I can use it to make changes; however, it never saves them. After clicking OK, it instructs me to restart the system. After a reboot all the setting are back to the default.
I have installed CCC three different ways:
1) sudo aptitude install --without-recommends fglrx-amdcccle | tee fglrx-amdcccle.log
2) sudo envyng -t
3) sudo ./ati-driver-installer-10-2-x86.x86_64.run
In all cases, the fglrx driver works, and 'sudo amdcccle' brings up the GUI, but the changes are gone after a reboot.
Hmm, at the moment, when I click "Apply" and the "Do you want to keep these settings?" 15 second countdown box appears, no changes occur even temporarily.
I've tried doing a fresh install of 9.04, then upgraded to 9.10 (I have problems with the 9.10 command line installer not installing grub) among other things.
I used to save videos I watch on internet by copying them from /etc/tmp folder on all previous versions. But,it's not working on maverick.Are temp video files being saved somewhere else or what

View 7 Replies View RelatedI use RipperX to rip CD's on my Ubuntu home server. The files it rips and encodes are in mp3 and they are all fine.
However the system is not saving id3 information for the final two tracks, despite having all the information.

When i installed Ubuntu, everything worked fine, sound drivers installed automatically and volume was perfect.Then one day as I was talking to a friend on skype, I tried changing the output to speakers from my headset during the call and i didnt get any output. I tried changing a few settings, can't remember which ones exactly until I noticed someone had pulled the audio cable from the back of my PC. I replaced it but I started getting very very low sound.I found out about alsamixer and when I ran it, I found that the volume on that device was turned down, i turned it up and voila! sound back to normal.However, now when I reboot, my sound goes down again. I have tried deleting the asound.state file and running the save command, "sudo alsactl store 0" I think, as someone suggested, but no cigar.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI had a hard time finding out how to change -- get to-- the simple scan preferences. There is no batten on the screen to open preferences window. I found two way to change the preferences on simple scan.
1. Easy way:
I found that when you run a program in gnome an icon of that application appears on top bar. If you click on that icon a window will appear and one of the items on that window is preferences, by clicking on that you could open preferences window, and change your preferences.
2. Hard way:
Go to applications and open dconf Editor
then go to org section click on it
then go to gnome section click on it
then go to Simple-Scan click on it
now you can change things
All of a sudden today there was no display on my Ubuntu PC. It seems to be powering on - I get the LG screen when the monitor is switched on - but it goes into "Power Saving Mode". How do I diagnose this? I already unplugged and plugged. Monitor is connected to a graphics card - no change when I switched to VGA.

Alon was nice enough to send me one of their old web pages with a HUGE list of archives but it's only the xml source code of the page. since the page isn't live of course, and because of the how he had to send me the code for the page and not a hyperlink to the page, i have the source code. now going through the source code of the page he emailed to me, i can find links to .mp3 files and i can open them and listen to the shows in web browsers, but i was hoping to save them to my computer forfuturelistening.URL]ww.chatterbox'ssite.com/whatever/anotherfolder/showiwanttosave.mp3 in firefox quicktime comes in and lets me listen (as long as my internet connection is active) but wont enable me to save because i dont have the pro version of quicktime. quicktime is good, but i dont use it enough to actually buy the product, and i'm not going to buy the product for just a one time use. is there another way to where i can save this file using the address from the source code (and the ChatterBox allows listeners to save their shows to computer for free, so it not some work around to rob them of money. i fully support them) without having to buy quicktime 7 pro(a product i never really use)?
View 4 Replies View RelatedInitially, Debian detected my M-Audio soundcard right off, and things were going great, until I tried to get a Logitech webcam working. Got video going, but no audio, so I installed cheese, alsa-base and alsa-utils, and played around with settings according to copious forum threads dedicated to the problem of Linux and webcams, all to no avail. Then I had NO SOUND, until I did a alsa-conf, which detected and (re)set my M-Audio card, until reboot, then again, NO SOUND. Settings were not saving through reboot.
So I purge removed alsa-base and alsa-utils, hoping that things would magically revert to pre-webcam experiment. Still no sound. I have given up on the webcam idea; I'll use my XP Pro laptop for that. But I need sound on this Linux box. Oh and when I'm playing ....., etc. the soundcard itself is making chatter noises to the beat of the music. This soundcard was working perfectly before I started the webcam debacle, so it's not a hardware issue.
This is more times I have encountered, with my browsers - Epiphany, Iceweasel,. GNU/Linux Debian SID. Though it is not consistent - on and off. I don't know how to recreate the environment. But though it says, it is downloading but when I go to the folder/directory, it's not there....this is frustrating as sometimes my download takes a while to find out that after it download, nothing is there. litterally nothing.Maybe it's in a temp folder but I don't know where to look for it -- (Epiphany).
View 2 Replies View RelatedEvery time I open "sound preferences" from either the sound applet or the preferences menu pulseaudio CPU usage goes right up to 100% and proceeds to lock up the entire computer. pavucontrol, paman, and all the other pulseaudio utils work fine, except for ubuntu's sound preferences. It affects a new account.This is my 10.04 desktop that is affected. I have just the default pulseaudio config.

After installing Debian for the first time earlier today, I tried to setup my display for a 1440x900 resolution. However, the "Monitor Preferences" setting won't allow me to set a resolution higher than 1280x1024.
