Ubuntu Multimedia :: Opening Images In Gimp And Controling Their Relative Size?
Jul 27, 2011
this should be easy but I dont know which option to use. I want to make a flier with Gimp, learned how to add fonts that are better than the crappy ones that come by default, but now I want to add images but want them to automatically scale to a size that I specify with a square I create by left clicking. I dont want to have to resize the entire image after measuring, I just want it to shrink/expand to fit an area that I specify for it.

If you had Gimp 2.6 (with gimp-plugin-registry installed) and installed Gimp 2.7 to try its new goodies, but Layer Effects are not showing, and when executing "gimp" from console you get these *nasty* errors:
Code:
This is a development version of GIMP. Debug messages may appear here.
gimp-user-install: migrating from /home/user/.gimp-2.6
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/lib/gimp/2.0/plug-ins/layerfx.py", line 23, in <module>
import gimp, gimpplugin, math
ImportError: No module named gimp .....
If you haven't install the 2.7 version yet. Before upgrading, backup "python" directory and then just restore it after installing 2.7.

I can't open any files such as .png's or .jpg's in gimp. How can I change this. I installed it via pacman. I don't know if this helps, but I'm running kde with arch. I'm guessing I need to add the path of libpng to the plugins section. What should I do?

I need to close images I work with when I'm done with them. As an example scenario, I can open several images and work on them, but every time I open them they create new instances in gimp, meaning the gimp could in the end be using several gigs of ram for images I can't even see are there. Also, I can't start gimp for batch only (Using 2.7 dev version)Code:$ gimp -i -b "(script-fu-thing 1)"This is a development version of GIMP. FC 12 64 bit. When I print an image from Gimp 2.6.8, where is most of the work being done to create data that the printer can use - on my computer or on my printer? The printing of images on my HP Laserjet 4000 or my Officejet 7000 is relatively slow. Can I speed it up by having more of the computation done on my computer instead of on the printers? Or is most of the work already being done by the computer?

I can gnome-open or eog a .jpg file in terminal command window in the gui mode. But when I use console, this commands doesn't open them up but instead gives an error. I want to try opening images, text files, videos, music in console mode, but the commands eog and gnome-open don't work here.

Is there (either raster or vector) FOSS editor where when moving a layer in the image editor, the program checks to see if might want to line up the objects either horizontally or vertically with a repeated spacing?Editors I would especially like to know how to do this in are GIMP, Inkscape, or mypaint.

I recently have bought a digital reflex. After a few shootings and so on it's now come the time to use my Ubuntu at best to work with my camera. Can you recommend to me some software (if it's an all in 1 product the better)
What I'm really interested in is handling RAW format (.cp2 if I'm correct?), tagging renaming and organizing my pictures (both with and without filters and so on applied on them). Also it would be great if it would allow me to bulk export images at the desired size and quality. (I've tried digiKam but it doesn't import pictures from my camera)

I need to find a program that will allow me to take images 600 x 600 and resize down to fit a specific size like 95 x 139. I need the images to not distort. There is white space around the objects in the images. I also need to be able to crop on a pixel scale to know that I am resizing it correctly.

What I'm trying to do is wget images, however, I'm not sure how to do it 100% right. What I've got is a index.html page that has images (thumbs) that link to the full size images. How do I grab the full size images?
Example of links on the page:
<a href="images/*random numbers*.jpg" target="_blank"><img border=0 width=112 height=150 src="images/tn_*random numbers*.jpg" style="position:relative;left:3px;top:3px" /></a>
I tried:
wget -A.jpg -r -l1 -np URLHERE
but only got the thumbs.

I have a requirement to print images (two to be precise) from the command line of a given size and without losing too much quality.
So, I may have two images, a.jpg and b.jpg which may be 4x4" and 6x4" respectively (the sizes may vary). I need to be able to print both these on a single sheet of paper (one under the other) at a given size for each - so a may be 2x2" and b may be 3x2" - the aspect ratio will always be maintained (or as near as possible!)
I am currently doing this a very messy way (because I don't know any other way!!) - basically I am converting the picture to a given size using a set density using convert and then concatenating the two using montage.
Here is part of my script:
Code:
Don't worry too much about the case statement at the end - that is just to be able to select to print either A, B or A and B.
The issue with this is that is doesn't work great if the aspect ratio is not maintained perfectly and also, it loses quite a lot of quality on the print.
I have a very old windows app which I wrote years back in VB (o dear! ) which does the same thing and the quality is fine (I am running it through wine). I want it to be command line though because I want to run it as part of other scripts etc.

Some of you may have had with issues after installing GIMP on Lucid Lynx 10.04. Which may be directly related to "gimp-help-en", which could prevent you from installing other applications and preforming system tasks. If so, use this method to fix it.
Process: (Terminal > $ sudo apt-get install gimp)
1. After installing Gimp go to the terminal:
2. Then load up the language support application:
3. Then it will ask you to install the "gimp-help-en", confirm it.
4. Fix'd
I think this issue is directly linked to a systems with multiple languages, but I haven't been able to test this theory out yet.

today I upgraded via official testing repository Gnome to version 3.18. After this, icons on desktop and nautilus are bigger, than before. Next thing, gaps between icons are smaller than before. I tried change theme to default (Adwaita), then run gtk-update-icon-cache, but without result.
Normal view - icons are big for this view. URL....
Small view - icons are still big for this view. URL...
How can I change icons size and gaps size? Or is it bug for this version?

Somewhere along the line I have managed to get the below error when loading a jpeg in the gimp (either with 'open with' on context menu or directly)Running as an unprivileged user
Code:
Calling error for procedure 'file-jpeg-load':
Procedure 'file-jpeg-load' not found
Opening '/home/fortyfourgalena/Desktop/photos/liza/inkosanalodge_20061201/20061201_171151_PC010620.jpg' failed: Procedure 'file-jpeg-load' not found
[code]...
This happens on a system running 10.04 / 64-bit. As I seem to recall a recent gimp update (might be wrong), I checked a 32-bit 10.04 laptop and it does not show the behavior. For information: the 64-bit system has some additional stuff installed for image processing (ufraw and darktable) but I have been using this already for a while without issues. The other main change on this 64-bit system before I noticed the problem was the installation of a geforce 8400 video card including the 'nomodeset' option in grub and install of the latest driver from the nvidia website. verify that the gimp on a 64-bit system is still functioning.Further a 'repair' from within synaptic throws the following error
Code:
E: /var/cache/apt/archives/gimp_2.6.8-2ubuntu1.2_amd64.deb: subprocess dpkg-deb --fsys-tarfile returned error exit status 2
Note: I found some messages regarding this problem on the web but they were referring to older kernels (2.6.8); and people reverted back to an even older kernel. And yes, there have been a recent kernel upgrade.

like the title says, after working in GIMP for, like, 5 minutes, my session suddenly closes and I have to login again. I have been looking a lot of time for a solution, but I've not seen anyone with this problem... does anyone of you have some kind of solution? I'm desperate. I really need to use it, and I don't want to use Wine+Photoshop, I don't like to rely on windows programs.

I have been recently using the GIMP, transferring from adobe photoshop. and the truth is i have been pleasantly surprised with GIMP, especially when comparing prices from the two. Anyway the one thing i have not been able to do, that i assume is possible is make a brush that i am able to sketch with with my wacom tablet.
what i mean by this is in adobe i was able to create a brush that would react affectively to the pressure senstivity and i would get nice realistic looking sketches that looked like pencil sketches. when i barley pressed on my tablet i would be light and when i pressed hard i was able to get the black line needed. i have messed around with the pressure settings on the brushes but havent noticed any difference when i press hard on my tablet or barely press at all.

I've been searching for a while now and come up empty handed, but after some research on the history of digital camouflage and how it was created I was able to devise a simple method for creating at least a close approximation of the real thing.
Step 1: start with a picture of the "texture" you intend to use. it doesn't matter if it's a low resolution picture because you are going to intentionally pixelate it
Step 2: use the noise plugin "pick" and create some static in the picture. I've found that you can just set everything to maximum and apply the pick with good results.
Step 3: (optional) if you want this to be a repeating pattern, at this time apply the "make seamless" tool under Map plugins.
Step 4: Apply a pixel blur. dial it in just to where you start to see hard pixel edges forming. In most digital camo patterns, the pixels are taller than they are wide, about a 3:2 ratio
Step 5: Choose the number of colors you want in your camo pattern. Virtually all digital patterns are either three or four colors, but never any more than that. Change the image mode from RGB to 4 color indexed. Then you can change it back to RGB if you wish to change the colors in your camo.
you can play with the settings on each step to dial in something that looks proper. The proper scale for your camo is roughly 1/4" tall pixels. Try playing with different textures, or even non digital camo prints. In about two minutes we've just created both a woodland and a desert digital print that is close enough to pass for MARPAT using free software.

I decided not to use Photoshop in wine on my computer but to only use GIMP because I heard there is so many free plugins on the internet that makes it function almost exactly as Photoshop.I install plugins but then GIMP wont open at all.I did a complete fresh install of 10.04 because I was having this GIMP problem after installing gimpshop and installing Photoshop 7, I figured it was the Photoshop that caused the problem
So now with a complete fresh install GIMP still wont work with any plugins installed.is there something i need before I can add any plugins or whats going on?

I add layers and they don't show up and the controls at the bottom of the layers palette (add layer, bin, etc) are all blanked out and i can't select them. It's impossible to do anything with layers in GIMP as it is at the moment and i need to get it sorted. I have tried closing down the layers tab, restarting GIMP and then adding the tab again but i get the same result, a layers palette that won't respond or show any layers that i do add.

There used to be a dropdown menu at the bottom right corner of the main window of GIMP (the window with whatever image i'm working on), where i would be able to select between zoom levels (such as 50%, 100%, etc). Recently, that menu seems to have disappeared, and i've had to use the actual zoom tool, which i find frustrating since i have to switch back and forth between tools.
