when I'm traying to watch 720p and 1080p movies, MKV format. The movie is breaking all time, do I need to install any codecs or extansions, or use another application.I tried VLC player, and it is same. Well i had same problem with Ubuntu 10.10 and could't fix it.

I have been able to start 720p videos but with considerable AV drift. When i forward the video the drift temporarily disappears and video starts drifting again. The problem is that the video is always slower than the audio. Framedropping removes the A-V lag but makes the video unwatchable.
When I watch a HD movie, the video will freeze momentarily sometimes. Would a 8400GS or 9600GT take care of this?
My video card is a 7300 le,

I'm just getting started with Ubuntu 64-Bit. Basically, I have Totem Movie Player and VLC Media Player installed and every time I watch a movie in either one of them. If I tab out of them or minimize them, when I bring the media player back up the screen is black. The sound still works perfectly but I can't see the movie and I've tried several media players out and they all do the same thing. Basically I can't multitask or bring up anything else while I watch a movie or I have to restart the player because of the media screen going black.
I'm not sure if my computer specs will help but here they are:
Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid 64-Bit
Intel Xeon X3210 2.13GHz Quad
4GB DDR2-800 RAM
ATI Radeon 4870 512MB Videocard
Ran into something weird. I was trying to watch a .mkv file in 720p format last night in VLC. Now, for about 10 minutes everything is fine and then the sound just stops. Video play is fine, but audio just cuts out. These hasn't happened with anything else other than this .mkv file. Would the fact I'm running gnome 3 using the open source drivers on my ati 5850 have anything to do with this? Or maybe something else? Anyone run into an issue like this?

The problem is the difference between the volume of the dialogs & that of the special effects (example: firing of a bullet ,a car crash, a lightning strike & similar). Is there a way to limit the volume to a certain level ? I tried volume normalization filter of both vlc & smplayer. But none seems effective.

I'm using Debian Squeeze with Fluxbox and I'm having a problem with xscreensaver. I've set to blank screen after 10 minutos of inactivity, but the problem is that when I'm watching a movie, the screen is blanked after 10 minutes too. So I have to manually kill xscreensaver before starting to see a movie, or I have to move my mouse / press keyboard every 10 minutes to activate the screen again.
I've done some search before posting and I only found something about a SMPlayer's option named "Disable screensaver", but it is already on and it has no effect preventing xscreensaver to work. Here is a screen shoot of my SMPlayer configuration window:

Apparently, xscreensaver isn't being able to recognize that another program is running. Could it be related to dbus?
PS: I had a dbus problem when I first upgraded to squeeze, my multimedia keys stoped working in banshee (whenever I clicked to play/pause/next etc, another banshee process was started), but I solved it by adding this line to my ~/.xinitrc: eval "$(dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session)"
i have set the display to go to sleep after 5 min. but it still goes to sleep when i am watching movie.
how can i stop this, it should only go to sleep when it is ideal, not when i am watching movie
I just installed Ubuntu 10.4 today... but I�ve got a weird problem...
When I want to play an official DVD, Mplayer and VLC start and close down immediately..
When I want to play a movie from my HDD I get this (see attachment) with Mplayer and with VLC..Totem just doesn't want to play it..
but whats really weird is when I make a screenshot using VLC even though the colours are weird the screen shot comes out normal
I can't play movies when I have browsers open. I am not sure if it is the browser, or what. I ran totem, and vlc in a terminal, and it says insufficient resources when I try to open a movie (see snapshot).
I also took a snapshot of my system monitor. I am not sure what resources it is talking about?
I am wondering if there is some one I can let in to my PC via the net, to help me with 2 program problems.
1) A movie player that actually can stream the movies without stopping every 12 seconds to reload?
2) I have a soundblaster Xfi sound card that I cannot get to work on Ubuntu 10.4. It has my midi ins and outs on it so my key board and recording suite is shot.
How would I do it that I can connect my laptop running Ubuntu to the TV to watch movies that I got stored on my HD?

For starters, watching movies causes one of my CPUs to go 100% when full screen. As you can guess watching movies doesn�t go smooth. It happens on every possible player. It doesn�t matter if I switch on or off compositing.

I have to giggle the mouse for the screen to come back. What could be causing this and how can I fix it. My settings are disabled. Is there anything else I forgot to check? I am using Ubuntu 10.10
View 4 Replies View RelatedEverything has been working great since January with one exception and that is the power saver mode thingy magig. Whenever I am not using the keyboard or mouse, the screen powers off after 5 minutes. When I am watching a movie. I cannot leave the mouse alone for after five minutes of watching the movie, the screen goes black. I'm not sure if the problem is my Nvidia card or Xorg or what. Any ideas how I can get a hold of this? Let me know what you need as far as diagnostic info. I actually have to leave for about 8 hours so.
View 10 Replies View Relatedi would like to know if there are any good ways to disable and then reenable (the latter is key!) the screensaver so that it doesn't start when i'm watching movies with xine or when i'm watching flash things online like through hulu, videos, or so on. it's relatively simple to have a script run that will turn off the screensaver before starting a certain executable. but what about turning it back on again when the executable closes? and is there any way to detect that flash is running inside a browser window and then disable that temporarily?

View 11 Replies View RelatedI'm new to Ubuntu but I installed Ubuntu 11.04 with no problems. I activated the recommended drivers for my laptop. My laptop is: Acer Aspire 7540G with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 video card and AMD Athlon II X2 processor. So the problems comes very very often. I watch videos on fullscreen or I leave them playing in ...... While playin a video the laptop just freezes. Everything stops working. I think this problems comes up may be every 30-40 minutes of watching a movie. I'm not a fan of holding the shut down button for 10 seconds every 40 minutes so I'll be very grateful if someone helps. I've removed Syn to Vblank from the CompizConfig because otherwise Ubuntu runs really slow on my computer and the videos are playing very slow and with very bad quality. When i removed it everything began to run faster but now I've this problem with the freezing... Any ideas ?

Is there any way to position subtitles in Totem in a bottom on the black border of the 16:9 movie when showing in the full screen of 4:3 monitor?Or not necessarely in fullscreen, but in a window where black borders are on the top and underneath the actual video frames.
Now always the subtitles covers part of the video on the bottom, which is a shame as there would be empty space underneath also.
The same question for VLC.
Subtitles, would be in the external file.
And I am not looking a solution which would need transencoding the video file.
btw, for GNOME Mplayer, the solution is to put "-vf expand=:-100::2" into Edit/Preferences/Mplayer/Extra_options_to_Mplayer
In Power Manager I set a 5 minutes period of inactivity before turning off the monitor... But in Fedora 11, when I saw movies, the sleep mode didn't come... But in Fedora 13 (programm VLC-player), after 5 minutes, computer come into sleep mode..What do I do to configure Power Manager or another program for watching movies without permanent dragging mouse?))

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have some trouble in playing mkv files (both 720p and 400p) on Ubuntu. I had no problem whatsoever playing the same files when I still had Windows, so I'm assuming this is not an hardware problem. I have an HP Pavillion laptop, an nVidia graphic card with proprietary drivers for Ubuntu, dual core AMD processor, and Ubuntu 10.04 64bit installed. Many other applications are actually way faster, now, than with Windows, as that was just a 32bit version. Nevertheless, I have problems. Totem is usually slow, and generates lags between video and audio. I used MPlayer (with Gnome GUI), and it was ok with some files, but with some others (can't find any particular logic, maybe it's due to different encoding methods) it will just start, not show anything, NOT CLOSE, and enter in some kind of stall. The CPU overheats and I'm forced to reboot to stop it.
(It's not due to folders too crowded with mkv files... I've tried to take the files out of their folders, they still give trouble). Finally, VLC kinda works, but still won't allow me to jump in between the file. With some files it just doesn't jump. With a file I acquired recently, it jumps to exactly HALF of the time I actually asked for the jump (Like, I ask to jump at 42 min., it jumps at 21 min.). Chapter selection won't work either.
I tried to play a certain mkv file, AVC AAC, 720, but I got these error messages:

I'm trying to change the output resolution of a HTPC that's connected to a 720p plasma from (an auto set) 1024x768 to 1280x720 so that the output is the correct 16:9 ratio for the plasma.The HTPC is running Ubuntu 11.04 with a GeForce 7600GT and is connected via VGA cable to the plasma. The plasma automatically detects the PC input as XGA.
The worst effect of this is 16:9 media (video clips etc) looks really stretched out with the letterbox bars on the top and bottom and icons in general don't look square.Nvidia driver has been activated via Additional Drivers but the message reads;

Any ideas what that means? Should I be looking for a way to disable whatever the Ubuntu driver is so the proprietry one is in use?Under nVidia Xserver settings I don't have an option for a 1280x720 resolution, the next closest resolution for 16:9 is 1360x768 but then portions of the output are no longer visible on the plasma.Could it be as simple as using the DVI output (not the VGA) from the graphics card to the plasma to get a correct reading of the input. Still, I wouldn't have a setting for 1280x720

With Iceweasel, when I watch HTML5 Youtube videos, I only have the quality 720p as the highest.
In the same machine, Windows 8.1, I can watch in 1080p in Internet Explorer.
I guess that it's not a problem of Iceweasel but about how Youtube serves the videos to my system. Is that correct?
i have acer 5532 with ati raden hd 3200. on windows xp, all 720p files play nicely in media player classic (with klite) but when i switched to ubuntu, inoticed that SOME 720p videos are not playing smoothly at all (frame skipping..freezing etc) but the audio is ok-ish. after a bit research i found out that only the matroska avi/mkv HD files cannot be played smoothlly. i have installed the restricted extras and proprietary ati drivers.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI ended up getting 1080p playback working perfectly with vlc on my 1201n about 2 months ago, but then I decided I'd reformat my system to clean it out a little. There's other tutorials out there, but none are as straightforward as that one. I literally copy and pasted the commands and it worked like magic...now I have the latest nvidia driver installed, but vlc 1.1 won't let me check the GPU acceleration box under Preferences > 'Input and Codecs'.
I remember that this tutorial gave you PPAs for debs of vlc pre-1.1 git files, and a list of all the necessary software to install (vlc, vdpau, smplayer). It was hosted on a site other than ubuntuforums, and it was the only one that worked at the time for me.
Anyone know what I'm talking about, or give similar links? I think with this new nvidia driver stuff is actually being slowed down a bit, but that doesn't explain why VLC won't let me activate GPU acceleration.
