Ubuntu Multimedia :: Get 1080p On A Nvidia ION With VLC

I ended up getting 1080p playback working perfectly with vlc on my 1201n about 2 months ago, but then I decided I'd reformat my system to clean it out a little. There's other tutorials out there, but none are as straightforward as that one. I literally copy and pasted the commands and it worked like magic...now I have the latest nvidia driver installed, but vlc 1.1 won't let me check the GPU acceleration box under Preferences > 'Input and Codecs'.
I remember that this tutorial gave you PPAs for debs of vlc pre-1.1 git files, and a list of all the necessary software to install (vlc, vdpau, smplayer). It was hosted on a site other than ubuntuforums, and it was the only one that worked at the time for me.
Anyone know what I'm talking about, or give similar links? I think with this new nvidia driver stuff is actually being slowed down a bit, but that doesn't explain why VLC won't let me activate GPU acceleration.

I have a Zotac IONITX-F-E motherboard (Intel Atom Dual Core 1.6 GHz + Nvidia ION) -based box with Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit installed. Do you or does someone you know have the same setup as I do? If so, do they have 1080p video playback working? If so, what driver are they using? I've tried following every guide I could find, but no luck so far. I have libvdpau1 and libvdpau-dev installed. I have the nvidia 195.36.24 driver installed (I used the nvidia installer). I have mplayer installed (which I compiled from source with --enable-vdpau).
I try to run mplayer with this command:

mplayer -vo vdpau -vc ffh264vdpau path/to/myfile.mkv
I get the following message in my terminal:

I have libvdpau-dev and libvdpau1 installed.
After Googling this problem, I found a post that suggested the following steps:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nvidia-vdpau
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-195 nvidia-195-modaliases
It turns out that I had already added the nvidia-vdpau repository. However, despite that, I get:

E: Couldn't find package nvidia-glx-195
The same problem exists for the nvidia-195-modaliases package. Do these packages exist? Is there some other way to get them?

I have a high resolution file (1080p) encoded with H.264 and when I play it back, it lags at certain parts (and enough parts to destroy the job of watching the video).
I don't think that my computer is that crappy and it has been able to play many H.264 encoded files with high resolution - so there is always a possibility that this file is just encoded poorly (lacking a better computer, I cannot test).
For information, I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit. I have a Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q9550 (@2.83 GHz). I have 8 GB of RAM (forgot the speed off the top of my head). And a Nvidia GeForce GTX 280 (1 GB of memory).
During the playback, the RAM is far from being completely used; however, it seems that one (and only one) of the cores of my CPU becomes saturated at 100% precisely at the moments in which the file lags. When the CPU utilization is below 100%, there is smooth playback.
My question is - is it possible to use all four cores during playback, or is such a process not capable of easy parallel processing.
Another side question is, how can I be sure that my GPU is being used in the decoding process - or is that also being under-utilized?

I use Ubuntu 10.04. I need to play a full HD (1080p) video on my pc:
CPU: AMD Athlon X2 7750 BE
MB: ASUS M3A32-MVP
RAM: 2x1GB KINGSTON 1066MHz
VGA: ASUS 8800GS
I think my PC should be able to play it, but the video is really not fluent. What should be wrong? Power less hardware? Wrong codecs?

This forum has been a wonderful treasure of knowledge. I am stuck up with something thats getting onto my nerves. I have installed lucid and followed the perfect desktop guide.
I have a mkv file (4.6Gigs) 1080p HD with DTS 5.1 audio. when I play the file either of the video or audio gets stuck (mostly video) I tried every possible configs from this forum but in vain. Im using Dell LAT D830 with 2GB RAM 2.2GHz CPU NVIDIA Graphics.

I'm having trouble getting 1080p out my xfx 9800gt that has an onboard hdmi socket. No doubt my HDTV is 1080p (panasonic TH-427PZ70B a few years old now), and it will do and has run at 1080p 60hz.
It auto detects the display as simply panasonic-tv and outputs at 1080i. As I've been running mythtv with tv tuners this actually worked quite well as dvb-t is interlaced anyway and most ofthe HD video files I play are 720p. However I would like to run it at 1080p for all the usual reasons- especially as I have some 1080p files I'd like to enjoy in all their glory!!
This doesn't seem to be ubuntu specific as mandriva behaves the same, and makes no difference if I use the open source (default with 9.10), the official nvidia package or as I've just tried 10.04 with default and nvidia.
I've searched around for nvidia hdmi 1080p etc but can't seem to dig up anything useful. Surely I should be able to force the graphics card to output standard 1080p 60hz?
Should I be able to do this through xrandr by setting a modeline or in xorg.conf or nvidia control pannel!?

I had a problem playing full HD videos (1080p @ 30 fps), frames dropped, CPU utilisation (on 1 of 2 CPUs) maxed out etc.As I'm still stuck on Hardy I didn't find much stuff that directly answers my question on how to play this... After hunting about a bit the following two links gave me some idea of what needs to be done, namely install a new version of Mplayer that supports VDPAU (NVidia's hardware video acceleration solution).

Luckily I had a NVidia video card that supports VDPAU and I had installed the NVidia proprietary drivers before [URL]To check if your NVidia card supports VDPAU please look at the proprietary driver release details.

I usually play using VLC but was put-off from trying to upgrade that to CDPAU support because of this little detail from the Ubuntu forum links above:

I've tried watching material in 1080p resolution on my notebook and i experienced some slowdowns, tearing, etc. Video is encoded by x264 and sound is flac 5.1, all in mkv container. I know it's quite heavy one, but it was playing quite good on windows+CoreAVC, so i expect no less from my shiny Ubuntu I did a bit of googling and found out that AVIVO/UVD/Whatever is already turned on by default in fglrx drivers when using Xv, yet CPU is struggling on 90-100% load. Is there a way to turn hardware decoding on? It doesn't seem to work by "default" (or i'm too desperate to acknowledge that hardware acc is already on and still struggling to decode this ).
Specs of my notebook:
Intel Pentium Dual-Core T4200 2.0 GHz
Mobility Radeon HD4570 256MB with fglrx from maverick repo
3GB RAM (doh!)
mplayer and codecs from medibuntu repo
mplayer uses -vo xv -va pulse , ffh264 and ffflac codecs

I am preparing to purchase a new laptop, with Ubuntu 10.04 built in, from System76 with 8.0 GB DDR3 1333 MHz RAM, ATI 4570 graphics with 512 MB GDDR2 memory, 500 GB 7200 RPM SATA II hard drive, and I get to choose a CPU. I am wondering: 1) Would I get better 1080p video playback performance with a dual core Core i7-620M or quad core Core i7-840QM CPU? 2) What is the best playback software in Ubuntu that takes full advantage of such a CPU, and also the GPU?

I have an old video card, Nvidia XFX 7800GT, which is now beginning to fail and I need to upgrade. I am not huge a gamer but I do play/buy games on regular basis. Right now I'm playing Eternal Lands on the Linux side. Looking to spend $100-$150 on a new card.I have a Core2Duo Wolfdale 3.0, with 2ghz ram and run Lucid 32bit. Also run windows Vista64Ultimate on dual boot (rarely).
I would love to buy a new ATI 5770 or 5830, ATI budget cards seem to be much better for the buck over budget Nvidia cards, but I'm concerned with ATI drivers and long term with Ubuntu.On the Nvidia side I'm considering the GTS 250. The only advantage I can find is lower power consumption with Nvidia and Ubuntu has always preferred Nvidia over ATI, as far as working drivers go.As Far as Ubuntu and Lucid is concerned, which way is best, ATI or Nvidia? Has anything changed with ATI support, that could make theor cards more compatible now and in the future?

I know Ubuntu has limited flash support but how else do I view a high definition 1080p video? Its all choppy to say the least, after a few seconds, its just like a slide show. I am using flashplugin-installer from adobe to render flash files.

Was running XBMC Live on Asrock 330, and decided to go for Ubuntu desltop, as I needed mor funcitonality out of my system, then run XBCM from the gui...
Ive tried clean installs of 9.10 and 10.04 with the same result... the max res I can set in Nvidia X Server is 1920x1080 @ 60hz (interlace), consequently my projecotr (Panasonic AE3000) is reporting 1080/60i input signal...
Is there a way to force 1080p output, or what am I doing wrong??

I was wondering why my max resolution on my 22" LG Flatron M2262D screen is 1024 x 768? Just recently wiped off Windows and installed Ubuntu fully. - (Funny thing is, I didn't mean to. I deleted the partition by accident). Anyway, before I could get a bigger resolution on Windows with this screen? Only reason I'm using it is because my laptop screen is broke with a 'ink spill' screen. Could it be drivers need installing? If so, where could I download them from?

I was scrolling through some multi-monitor problem topics and I guess everywhere has been having all kinds of issues. Nevertheless, I'm going to try and get mine solved. I have a laptop and I can get my monitor up and running, switch between default and not, and move it above/right/left without an issue. But if I unplug it, or boot up unity without my laptop connected to the monitor, I cannot get any functionality. The screen is distorted (as if unity is trying to display my monitors 1080p on my laptops smaller screen, or maybe even the 3268x1080p format that my dual setup runs with).
Is this a known bug or are there fixes out there that allow unity to self-adjust depending on whether my monitor is attached or not?

What is the minimum computer spec for playing 1080p flash files via a web browser smoothly at least 25fps? We all know that flash is not very good on Linux. On my old computer, I can play 720p flash files in the browser at arount 25fps on Windows, but on Ubuntu on the same computer via dual OS installation, it struggles to play 420p flash files in the browser. So basically, I want to build a new computer and have Ubuntu as the only OS, but this computer needs to be able to play 1080p flash files via the browser (not by downloading and converting them), but straight from the browser smoothly. Is this possible and what would the minimum computer spec need to be to achieve this?

I am completely new to Ubuntu or any Linux based OS whatsoever, so excuse me if I sound retarded. I recently installed Xubuntu to an old laptop of mine and everything went fine except for the fact that I had to install a WiFi driver; I liked Xubuntu so much that I decided to go ahead and dual boot Ubuntu on my WIndows 7 machine. After I installed Ubuntu, I realized that I was stuck in 800x600 resolution and I was unable to run the resolution in 1920x1080 like I should be able to. I tried to uninstall and reinstall Ubuntu and I had the same thing happen. Most of the other help forums I had searched claimed that I needed to check my Xorg Config, but I don't know how to do that. Also, I get a "too many connections" message every time I start in Ubuntu; could this possibly be related?

Quick update: Ubuntu will not let me use the "extra visual effects" option for my desktop appearance. It stars searching for a driver then doesn't let me use the enhanced visuals. This leads me to believe that it's a driver issue. How can I tell which driver I am using in Ubuntu????

I am running Debian Squeeze with 2.6.32-5 amd64 kernel with GCC 4.3.5 (the same one used to build the kernel) installed. I have a nVidia GTX 470. I'm trying to install the latest nVidia drivers (260. ...). I've never installed noveau or any other open source nVidia driver. Here's what I've been doing:-Change the "Driver "nvidia"" line in /etc/X11/xorg.conf to "Driver "vesa""-Restart system in single user mode as root, no services running-cd to the directory with nvidia-Linux-x86_64-... .run (what I'll call nvidia.run)-enter "sh nvidia.run --uninstall"-enter "CC="/usr/bin/gcc-4.3" && sh nvidia.run"It starts up and it compiles the kernel 100%. I wanting to build a media player/PVR MythTV linux PC for my TV which will be capable of simultaneously encoding video(both h.264/MPEG-4 and xvid) whilst playing back 1080p video. That way I can watch hd video I've recorded whilst I'm recording and converting another programme in the background.

Are there big disadvantages to building a computer around a motherboard with ATI Radeon graphics instead of Nvidia? I am using an AMD CPU to save money, but all the motherboards AMD recommends use ATI. I have always used Nvidia in the past, And am not sure what the current state of ATI Linux drivers is. I know I would be giving up VDPAU acceleration for video playback, but hopefully the Athlon� II X4 635 processor I am looking at has enough horsepower to handle this on it's own, even for high-def h264.

nVidia came out with new drivers yesterday that are not in the nvidia-current metapackage. I don't care what card you have, this module drives it. What worked for me may not necessarily work for everyone, as I am not an oracle with respect to your particular system configuration. This howto will be done in broad strokes. Down to business. For this howto, I will assume two things: first, that you download the nVidia installer to /home/username; second, that your prior setup was having nvidia-current installed! Things we want installed

Paranoid stuff we'd like to do just in case the above doesn't work (as it did not for me): sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf Somewhere in the file, add the line "blacklist nouveau" PRINT THESE INSTRUCTIONS NOW BEFORE YOU KILL YOUR X SERVER Now, I installed by doing (from my home user directory)

This stops the X server, removes the potentially conflicting current drivers you have, installs the new driver (and -a accepts the license agreement so that we don't get prompted), and reboots.If this does not work, you can rollback from a LiveCD or the recovery mode with (again, from your home user directory)

I've got a Ubuntu 10.10 installed on an Acer Revo 3700 and it's attached to a 32" Toshiba TV via a HDMI cable, but unfortunately I can't see the toolbars at the top and the bottom of the screen.
I've tried changing the resolution and refresh rate but nothing seems to work.
Unfortunately this problem is rendering my new PC almost useless as I can't navigate around the toolbars.

Ever since I let the update manager install the 260.19.06 Nvidia driver I have had page tares about 1/4 of the way down the screen when vsync is enabled, if i disable vsync I get tares all over the screen, with vsync on only 1/4 of the way down the screen. Same in Video playback, flash, games, window draging, always the same location. Its not a big issue as I'm not doing multimedia or games under Linux. I'm more wondering if this is just effecting me or if it's a known issue.

I am having trouble getting sound over hdmi with my Nvidia MCP7A HDMI. The strange thing is that everything works fine in a Live disc, but once I do a fresh install of that Live disc I get no sound, even though my configuration is exactly the same (as far as I can tell). I've checked the little things like alsamixer volumes, aplay -l, etc etc. Everything looks good to me. I can reproduce on multiple TVs so its not the receiver. Video drivers are the same in both live version and installed. aplay -l detects my device. sound/pci/hda/patch_nvhdmi.c already has my correct vendor id in it. Perhaps the following info can figure out what my installed environment is lacking.
