Ubuntu Multimedia :: TV Showing Us As Projector - Remove Overscan?

Jul 25, 2010

There's several threads dealing with overscan, but I've got an interesting twist in my setup that (I believe) is putting a kink into the proposed solutions. I'm trying to set up a media center PC with Ubuntu 10.~. The motherboard has built-in ATI graphics (3300 series), and connects to my television (Panasonic capable of 1080i) via HDMI. As can be expected, the overscan makes the top and bottom bars nearly invisible (as well as a portion of the sides).

When I run the Catalyst Control Center, it informs me that the monitor is a projector, not a TV. Try as I might, I can't convince the thing it's attached to a TV. When I run "aticonfig --tv-info", I am informed that a TV is not connected.

One question I could ask, though: does it matter? The reason I'm asking is that I can't find the "Configuration" menu option in the CCC that all the other threads talk about. I know where the little black triangle menu is, but there's no "Configuration" item in it. There's also (as best as I can tell) no way of adjusting overscan for a digital projector.

General :: Screen Not Showing On Laptop But Showing On Projector When Connected

Apr 18, 2011

When I try to connect a projector to my laptop (already running) and hit the fn+f7 (the designated button for switching screen), nothing happens. I see "no source found" on projector screen and my laptop screen works perfectly. Now if I restart the laptop with the projector connected, I see all the intial booting messages on the projector screen (not on my laptop), then the gnome login screen appears on both the projector screen and laptop (when the login screen appears on laptop it looks like it has lower resolution than my usual laptop resolution). But immediately after I log in, my laptop screen goes blank, and projector screen becomes the only active screen.

If I restart without the projector, again all normal operation on laptop screen is restored.

I feel like I am missing some very silly options. Any help is appreciated.

Here is the output of xrandr when the laptop is connected:

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Disable Overscan With ATI Drivers?

May 11, 2010

When I first installed Ubuntu, I installed the ATI drivers with Catalyst Control Center, too. I believe the next time I restarted my computer, it was overscanned. It had the 2 inch border around my display. It was terrible, and I wanted to stop using Ubuntu because I couldn't find a fix. I finally removed the drivers through the terminal (don't remember how) and the border was gone.

The problem is, I don't have any actual drivers for this card installed. It's a Radeon HD 4650. I was thinking of trying: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver

Would the be a way to remove overscan with that? Or is there a way with ATI's closed source drivers I had the first time? Ubuntu crashes sometimes and the screen goes all weird, which I'm pretty sure is from the video card. I also can't see the boot splash for Ubuntu when starting up the computer, which I've heard can be caused by your video card.

I'd like to have the drivers for my card, but not have to worry about the damn 2 inch overscan.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: The NVidia Overscan And Fixing It?

Jun 23, 2011

I have Googled. I have searched these forums and others. I have ripped my hair out in frustration. As many are aware, custom resolutions- "What the hell" by "that's just messed up" or "Jesus Christ" by "you've got to be kidding"- are very hard to set under the new "xorg.conf isn't really used" paradigm. This should not be. Many Ubuntu users are running the OS on displays with either nonstandard display resolutions or devices which overscan the display but do not offer a 1:1 pixel display setting- such as myself, on my 50" Samsung 1080p DLP television, connected via its HDMI port.

After more than a year trying to find a hard-and-fast process for fixing this overscan problem (note that I did not say "a hard-and-fast FIX for this problem"), I have decided to turn to the collective wisdom of the Ubuntu user community in an effort to put this issue to bed for good. To that end, I create this thread.

Recent research via the web has led me to believe that the problem lies in the X server not being aware of any sort of valid modeline for my- or your- nonstandard resolution. I am well-aware that each solution for each user will be different; if you're reading this, you're probably a geek like me in the first place, and your chops are more than sufficient to tackle both biting off this huge issue and chewing it.

My question to the community is this: How do I determine the correct modeline to add to xorg.conf, how do I make it available to the X server, what do I need to do to format the modeline in a valid way in xorg.conf (if necessary), and how do I make it appear in the list of valid resolutions when I run nvidia-settings (or whatever the command is)?

Keep in mind, I'm more interested in establishing the correct pipeline for fixing the problem and allowing arbitrary resolutions to the limit of the given device's capacity, rather than an exact solution for my particular hardware. In other words, I don't want an exact answer for my situation; what I'm looking for is a method for finding the proper solution given situations similar to mine.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Overscan - HTPC Connected To LCD HDTV Over HDMI?

Dec 12, 2010

I have an HTPC with an onboard ATI video chipset but for hardware acceleration's sake, I installed a GeForce 9500GT video card. Everything works quite well, except for the overscan issue. I've installed the latest nvidia binary drivers (manually) but I don't see any options in nvidia-settings to solve this overscan issue.

Here is my xorg.conf file:

Code:
# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
# nvidia-xconfig: version 260.19.21 (buildmeister@builder103.nvidia.com) Thu Nov 4 20:57:26 PDT 2010
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "Layout0"
Screen 0 "Screen0"

[Code]...

I tried adding that ModeLine line myself (using xrandr and gtf) but that fails too. I've scoured the web and these forums, and I've seen some overscan issues reported but with no solution in sight.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Blurry Projector Image With Intel GMA

Oct 11, 2010

Here are the details:
Acer Aspire 5315-2681 notebook
Intel GMA 965 adapter
Ubuntu 10.04.1 (Lucid)
Not sure what resolution the desktop is, but should be 1280x800
Fn+F5 does nothing (2nd display notebook hotkey)
ANDsome sort of SHARP projector
Projector resolution should be 800x600

This is the info from lspic:

VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

(There is a sticker on the computer that says Mobile Intel GMA X3100, however.)

When I booted up the computer with the projector attached my bootloader appeared on the wall but not on the LCD. When I logged in my desktop appeared properly on my computer and is duplicated on the wall. However the wall image is very blurry. Part of the lower image is cut off and the right side is too short and there is a green band on the right edge a half dozen pixels wide.

When I booted (dual boot) into windows XP I got the same thing. Then I installed the proper drivers for the graphics adapter (they had not been installed because I hadn't used XP for anything but updating the BIOS) and the image lined up neatly and fit properly, and I could set the display to extend my desktop (instead of duplicate) it on the projector image. (This is what I would like to do under Ubuntu).

I'm concerned that my VGA controller doesn't have the right drivers or is set up incorrectly, but since I'm new to Linux I have no idea how to fix it.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Screen Offset After Using Projector And Gtkwhiteboard?

Jan 30, 2011

Ubuntu 10.10Asus UL30Agraphic chipset Intel GMA 4500 MHDNative LVDS1 display resolution is 1366x768, but my laptop now boots at 800x600. Using xrandr to set resolution at 1366x768, I get the right dot pitch but the screen is still 800x600 px wide, left-top aligned on a 1366x768 display, so that I see a 168px black belt on bottom and a 566 black belt on the right. A vertical screen offset of 168 px affects also the pointer (touchpad) in the following way - I can move and see the pointer arrow all the display wide including the black region, but input (click) is taken for a position 168 px above the pointer visible position.

This is happening after having used the laptop with an external projector and gtkwhiteboard (wiimote based infrared pointer management). I then removed gtkwhiteboard to no effect.Everything works fine when booting in failsafeX, recovery mode. Here is output of uname -a

Code:
Linux bidolino 2.6.35-25-generic #44-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jan 21 17:40:44 UTC 2011

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Forcing VGA Output "on" After Boot (overhead Projector)?

Jun 23, 2010

Yesterday I was trying to connect the overhead projector to the VGA output of my laptop. The problem was that the device was connected by way of a VGA video splitter, which evidently missed some signal, and made the projector invisible to the laptop: "xrandr -v -q" told me "VGA1 disconnected".

The solution is: boot with

Code:
video=VGA-1:e
kernel boot parameter, found in the wiki and in intel linux FAQ.

It works, but it is a bit awkward to have to reboot to switch on or off the VGA output. So I suppose there is some user-space trick or utility to do this which I was unable to find.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 - Catalyst Control Center (Overscan Adjustments)

Jan 4, 2011

I've got 10.10 up and running like a champ. Haven't done much in it, but all was well. After a little while I went in to turn the cool effects on, and it told me I needed a driver for my ATI card so I said go for it. It ended up putting Catalyst Control Center in for me. That's all fine and dandy except on the windows side I can get into an area that allows me to adjust overscan and turn it off (its a slider for under and overscan).

This version wont seem to let me do that, so now I'm stuck with either NOT a full screen, or no ability to have fun graphic effects. While your here, how can I change the data files which I think ubuntu refers to as your /home folder (documents pictures etc) to a different location? Windows7 and Ubuntu need to see the files in the same places so I don't have to have two working sets of files.

Only one user created during installation.Everything's fine so far except for two things:-If I launch synaptic from the start menu, it asks for my password which I type in or even copy-paste to be sure.Strangely it always comes back saying incorrect password. If I open a terminal and call "sudo synaptic" and type in my password when prompted, the application shows up fine. Again if I do the same via the Run dialog (alt+F2), that is "sudo synaptic", nothing comes up. If I just type "synaptic", a pop up says that as a user I won't be able to install anything and blah-blah, and the application displays properly

Hardware :: ATI Radeon 57xx Using HDMI Overscan (CentOS 5.5 X86_64)?

Feb 9, 2011

So, I need to use the HDMI out on my Radeon 57xx because the DVI input on my monitor is in use by another machine that has no other way to connect to it, and I won't swap cables around all the time. Of course, because someone somewhere decided that if it's plugged in to HDMI it must be a TV and have overscan issues I have a nice black box surrounding my screen image.

In Windows I can resolve this by opening CCC and changing the overdrive settings. Thus far I have yet to be able to get CCC to open and the only thing the console tool allows you to do is toggle overscan on and off, which doesn't seem to have any effect so far. Has anyone gotten this issue resolved? Do I need to focus on getting CCC working (which I probably won't use for anything else...) or is there a console command that can handle the job? Change to xorg.conf? Anything?

Ubuntu :: Cannot Enable Compiz Effects After Using A Projector

Apr 7, 2010

A friend whom I turned on to Ubuntu with 9.10 recently connected a projector to watch a movie off her laptop. When it was connected, the laptop screen changed and it was clear that desktop effects through compiz were disabled. Thing is, since disconnecting the projector, I cannot get the effects back.If I go into Preferences - Appearance and click to enable Normal or Extra Visual Effects, the same thing happens. I.e. I get a popup saying Searching for hardware driver...and after about 20 seconds, the screen flashes a bit, and says

Desktop effects could not be enabled. Not sure why it's searching for a hardware driver. The computer doesn't require any 3rd party hardware drivers to be enabled - it doesn't have an nVidia card or anything like that.If it makes a difference, she yanked the VGA cord out without setting the display mode back to just her laptop with the FN and F key combo.I've tried:

-Reinstalling compiz

-Tinkering with options under Preferences - Display

-Ensuring that nothing is available under Preferences - Hardware Drivers

Ubuntu :: Communicate To A Sanyo Projector Using PySerial?

import serial
ser = serial.Serial(12)
ser.baudrate = 19200

[code].....

I have also tried variations using "CR0", "CR0", "CR0x0D" and nothing seems to change it. I'm using another application to ensure that I can speak to the Sanyo projector, and I get a correct response.CR0 is a status read of the hardware that should return something like "80" which would mean "STANDBY"However, the responses that I keep getting are things like 3,4, or 5 which seem to be errors, given that they are returned apparently based solely on the length of the String I send, not based on the actual command.

Fedora :: Back To Nouveau Driver - Display On Projector?

Nov 12, 2010

Fedora 13, x86_64, up to date. Trying to get nVidia Quadro NVS 140M to display on a projector the same as it does on the laptop screen, which is 1680 x 1050. I failed to do so with the nVidia driver (latest version), so I want to go back to the nouveau driver and try with xrandr. I have always used the nouveau driver with Fedora without an issue, but in my former life in Ubuntu I sometimes switched back and forth between the "nv" driver and the nVidia driver.

Doing so was trivially easy - just edit xorg.conf replacing "nv" with "nvidia" or vice-versa, then restart X. However, after installing the nVidia driver via Yumex and using the nVidia config utility, I find that now I have an xorg.conf file that is loaded with stuff I don't understand, except that at the top it says it was created by nVidia, and there are two places where it says the driver is "nvidia." I have searched and all I can find is instructions for installing the nVidia driver.

Apparently that is meant to be a one-way ticket, because I can't find any instructions for how to return to the nouveau driver. Except stuff that is over a year old, and complaints from users whose systems failed to start X. What would happen if I just replace "nvidia" with "nouveau" in the xorg.conf file and restart X? I know if it won't start X I can boot to rescue mode and re-edit xorg.conf, but I'd rather ask first and do it the right way than have to repair a broken system.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: [Monitors] Dual Showing As One 3600x1080?

Jul 21, 2011

In 11.04 there seems to be several posts regarding dual monitors. When I tested 11.04 prior to making it my os Monitor Preferences detected both of my monitors, as did Nvidia Xserver.

So installed 11.04: After enabling my 2nd monitor using Twinview when I reloaded I get the following in the top right hand corner. (This ss was taken during some testing when I removed my 2nd monitor it shows 3600x1080 when both are plugged in) The Unity desktop or Classic will both load up and I can use the screens just fine. The problem is whenever I put games, or even a ..... video in full screen it breaks is the only way I can put it. I open up Monitor Preferences and it show Uknown Monitor with a resolution of 3600x1080. I can only assume that its trying to make the games etc use that resolution. Tested wow in wine and it shows that res even after I forced it to use my primary at 1920x1080.

I am new to Ubuntu so not sure if Twinview is working as intended but I am guessing not. As I have seen many other with Dual Monitor issues and not sure if this is the same thing. I have no problem using max for windows but anything Full Screen is where the issue is. I have tried setting the positions to "Left of" instead of absolute for the 2nd monitor but it changes back each reboot.
