Debian Multimedia :: Clone Desktop On Projector In KDE

Oct 15, 2015

I need to clone my laptop's desktop in a vga projector. I'm using debian 8 kde spin. If I simply connect it, the projector become the extension of my desktop (like dual monitor). Of I go on monitor setup in kde settings, I can just enable or disable One of 2, or setup the main, but there si no option to clone from the laptop to the projector.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: TV Showing Us As Projector - Remove Overscan?

Jul 25, 2010

There's several threads dealing with overscan, but I've got an interesting twist in my setup that (I believe) is putting a kink into the proposed solutions. I'm trying to set up a media center PC with Ubuntu 10.~. The motherboard has built-in ATI graphics (3300 series), and connects to my television (Panasonic capable of 1080i) via HDMI. As can be expected, the overscan makes the top and bottom bars nearly invisible (as well as a portion of the sides).

When I run the Catalyst Control Center, it informs me that the monitor is a projector, not a TV. Try as I might, I can't convince the thing it's attached to a TV. When I run "aticonfig --tv-info", I am informed that a TV is not connected.

One question I could ask, though: does it matter? The reason I'm asking is that I can't find the "Configuration" menu option in the CCC that all the other threads talk about. I know where the little black triangle menu is, but there's no "Configuration" item in it. There's also (as best as I can tell) no way of adjusting overscan for a digital projector.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Blurry Projector Image With Intel GMA

Oct 11, 2010

Here are the details:
Acer Aspire 5315-2681 notebook
Intel GMA 965 adapter
Ubuntu 10.04.1 (Lucid)
Not sure what resolution the desktop is, but should be 1280x800
Fn+F5 does nothing (2nd display notebook hotkey)
ANDsome sort of SHARP projector
Projector resolution should be 800x600

This is the info from lspic:

VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

(There is a sticker on the computer that says Mobile Intel GMA X3100, however.)

When I booted up the computer with the projector attached my bootloader appeared on the wall but not on the LCD. When I logged in my desktop appeared properly on my computer and is duplicated on the wall. However the wall image is very blurry. Part of the lower image is cut off and the right side is too short and there is a green band on the right edge a half dozen pixels wide.

When I booted (dual boot) into windows XP I got the same thing. Then I installed the proper drivers for the graphics adapter (they had not been installed because I hadn't used XP for anything but updating the BIOS) and the image lined up neatly and fit properly, and I could set the display to extend my desktop (instead of duplicate) it on the projector image. (This is what I would like to do under Ubuntu).

I'm concerned that my VGA controller doesn't have the right drivers or is set up incorrectly, but since I'm new to Linux I have no idea how to fix it.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Screen Offset After Using Projector And Gtkwhiteboard?

Jan 30, 2011

Ubuntu 10.10Asus UL30Agraphic chipset Intel GMA 4500 MHDNative LVDS1 display resolution is 1366x768, but my laptop now boots at 800x600. Using xrandr to set resolution at 1366x768, I get the right dot pitch but the screen is still 800x600 px wide, left-top aligned on a 1366x768 display, so that I see a 168px black belt on bottom and a 566 black belt on the right. A vertical screen offset of 168 px affects also the pointer (touchpad) in the following way - I can move and see the pointer arrow all the display wide including the black region, but input (click) is taken for a position 168 px above the pointer visible position.

This is happening after having used the laptop with an external projector and gtkwhiteboard (wiimote based infrared pointer management). I then removed gtkwhiteboard to no effect.Everything works fine when booting in failsafeX, recovery mode. Here is output of uname -a

Code:
Linux bidolino 2.6.35-25-generic #44-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jan 21 17:40:44 UTC 2011

Hardware :: Ubuntu 8.4 Desktop - Clone To Sandforce SSD

Jan 10, 2011

I have a Ubuntu 8.4 desktop (ZOTAC) test rig that works OK. The OS was first installed on a 60Gb ATA hard drive and subsequently cloned to a separate 120Gb SATA hard drive using ddrescue running for this purpose from a Ubuntu CDRom. As prescribed in dimitar.me/clone-disk-drives-with-ubuntu . . . ,this required simply:
sodu ddrescue -v /dev/sda /dev/sdb

This all worked and the resulting 120Gb drive installed on its own was bootable and fdisk showed that both the 60 and 120 drives had identical EXT3 partitions. Next, I installed a 60Gb SSD (Microcenter G2 series) as a copy destination (/dev/sdc) in the same way as I had used the 120GB drive. Then I wrote a partition on the SSD with
cfdisk -z /dev/sdc followed by W and, as before,
sodu ddrescue -v /dev/sda /dev/sdc

This all worked and fdisk showed that the SSD had the expected cloned partitions. But the SSD would not boot and moreover would not mount because mount stated that the drive did not recognize the EXT3 partition parameter nor any other partition type. Please note that I am not trying for efficient use of the SSD by manipulating partition boundaries and block sizes; I just want it to accept a clone write like a hard drive does.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Forcing VGA Output "on" After Boot (overhead Projector)?

Jun 23, 2010

Yesterday I was trying to connect the overhead projector to the VGA output of my laptop. The problem was that the device was connected by way of a VGA video splitter, which evidently missed some signal, and made the projector invisible to the laptop: "xrandr -v -q" told me "VGA1 disconnected".

The solution is: boot with

Code:
video=VGA-1:e
kernel boot parameter, found in the wiki and in intel linux FAQ.

It works, but it is a bit awkward to have to reboot to switch on or off the VGA output. So I suppose there is some user-space trick or utility to do this which I was unable to find.

Debian :: Clone A System That Uses Spanned HDs Via LVM?

Oct 1, 2010

i recently installed Debian Lenny on my dad's EEE 900A. I initally tried Ubuntu's 10.04 version but it gave me problems with the WiFi function keys. Debian took me a while to configure based on the excellent Debian EEE wiki, and everything's so much saner now.

I installed Debian Lenny using LVM2, spanning the files over the built-in 4 GB SSD and a plugged-in 8 GB SDHC card. I followed the instructions in this wiki to set it up. I was wondering if there's a way to easily clone this system so that if my dad accidently screws it up the in the future, he would be able to restore it back easily. Obviously, he would have to make backups of his documents, etc. on a separate drive so he can restore them back after the cloned image with the basic drivers, partitions, apps, etc. is restored.

Here's the system's info. There are three partitions on /dev/sda (the SSD) and one partition of /dev/sdb (the SDHC card). /dev/sda3 and /dev/sdb1 have been combined to create a Volume Group, called 'vol-1'. 'vol-1' has two Logical Volumes - 'root' and 'home'. The file system on all partitions is reiserfs.

Debian Installation :: Clone Root System And Make It Bootable?

Aug 10, 2010

Running Squeeze here. I added a new SSD to my system. Root is /dev/sda3 and I want to clone that system to the new SSD on /dev/sdb1 and make it bootable. I tried:

mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/ssd_root
cp -dpRx / /mnt/ssd_root

then

update-grub

or

grub-install --recheck --root-directory=/mnt/ssd_root /dev/sdb

but to no avail. I cannot get the new system to be bootable and available through Grub. Part of the problem is that I do not know my way around Grub v2 so well, I could probably manage quite well with legacy grub. So, whats the easiest way to clone a system and make it bootable on another partition? Should I be using debootstrap, and importing/exporting the package list to install the same packages on the new system as the old? or is using cp -dpRx to copy the old ok? How do I make the new system boot?

Debian Multimedia :: Desktop Windows Lag ?

Jan 19, 2011

I recently switched to Debian Lennyx64 (from ubuntu) and I am really enjoying it so far. I have just one problem, when I drag open windows of any program around on my desktop there is major drawing lag of the window.

This happens in other situations like it is very painful to watch a fast moving IRC chat because of this lag.

I've tried using different windows managers and enviroments and the problem still exists. I have a pair of crossfired Radeon 4850s and I have the drivers installed from AMD's website. I have a first gen Phenom x4 with 8gb of RAM so I don't think its an issue with resources. I tried looking at the Xorg.conf but I really do not know what to look for.

Debian Multimedia :: Why No Desktop Icon With Automount

Sep 9, 2010

I have a 2 Computers:
Computer A has a RAID array in it, and everything works perfectly fine. When Computer A powers on, the RAID array is automatically mounted, mdadm takes care of all of the things it's supposed to, and an icon for the RAID array is automatically placed on the desktop. Everything Just Works (TM).
Computer B is configured similarly to Computer A. They have identical configuration files (at least, all the ones I've checked are identical), and when Computer B powers on, the RAID array is automatically mounted, mdadm takes care of all of the things it's supposed to, BUT, NO icon for the RAID array is automatically placed on the desktop. How do I change that?

They have identical /etc/fstab's (the lines in bold are the ones that matter):
Computer A
mediaserver:/home/mediaserver/Desktop# cat /etc/fstab .....

Computer B
mediaserver:/home/mediaserver# cat /etc/fstab
# /etc/fstab: static file system information .....

They have identical /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf's
Computer A
mediaserver:/home/mediaserver/Desktop# cat /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf
DEVICE partitions
CREATE owner=root group=disk mode=0660 auto=yes
HOMEHOST <system>
MAILADDR root
ARRAY /dev/md0 level=raid5 num-devices=4 metadata=0.90 UUID=82bfcecf:5cd4d557:2f1fbd23:68e2797c

Computer B
mediaserver:/home/mediaserver# cat /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf
DEVICE partitions
CREATE owner=root group=disk mode=0660 auto=yes
HOMEHOST <system>
MAILADDR root
ARRAY /dev/md0 level=raid5 num-devices=4 metadata=0.90 UUID=6c24c0e5:84ead07e:c109596b:d7e29b7e

The outputs of mount are also very similar:
Computer A
mediaserver:/home/mediaserver/Desktop# mount
/dev/hda1 on / type ext3 (rw,errors=remount-ro)
tmpfs on /lib/init/rw type tmpfs (rw,nosuid,mode=0755)
proc on /proc type proc (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev)
sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev)
procbususb on /proc/bus/usb type usbfs (rw)
udev on /dev type tmpfs (rw,mode=0755)
tmpfs on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw,nosuid, nodev)
devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,noexec,nosuid,gid=5,mode=620)
/dev/md0 on /mnt/arrayCOMP_A type xfs (rw)

Computer B
mediaserver@mediaserver:~$ mount
/dev/hdc1 on / type ext3 (rw,errors=remount-ro)
tmpfs on /lib/init/rw type tmpfs (rw,nosuid,mode=0755)
proc on /proc type proc (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev)
sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev)
procbususb on /proc/bus/usb type usbfs (rw)
udev on /dev type tmpfs (rw,mode=0755)
tmpfs on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw,nosuid, nodev)
devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,noexec,nosuid,gid=5,mode=620)
/dev/md0 on /mnt/arrayCOMP_B type xfs (rw)
mediaserver@mediaserver:~$

So how do I get an icon for the device /dev/md0 to automagically appear on the desktop every time the device is mounted (which occurs every time the computer boots up)?
