i'm using a monitor and a lcd tv. how can i set my monitor as my primary screen? for example if i open a videos video in fullscreen mode it always plays on my monitor, but i want it to play it on the lcd tv.

I am running Ubuntu 8.04 on a laptop. I have a 19" Acer monitor and in the past have successfully configured my xorg.conf to handle dual monitor setup with 1024x768 on the laptop and 1600x900 on the Acer monitor. What I have done now is run the laptop through a KVM switch. Due to this, I would like to set the Acer monitor as the primary monitor and just shut the laptop. How can I project my laptop screen to my Acer monitor so that I can use the 1600x900 resolution available rather than just cloning my laptop and using 1024x768?

I rely on xcalib from Stefan Doehla to invert my screen gamma ramps, ie turn them to white text on black backgrounds. This worked perfectly, just using
xcalib -i -alter
but now, xcalib only inverts the netbook screen. The second screen remains stubbornly unaffected.
Since xcalib has not changed, and it works on one screen, maybe something changed between Karmic and Lucid.
When my netbook has an extended screen, using an external monitor, all of the panels stay on the netbook, not the big monitor. When I connect an external monitor, I want to use it as my primary screen. I only really intend to use the netbook screen for skype calls (so I am looking into the webcam, and not away from it) since it is so small. I wish the secondary screen to be the netbook, not the external monitor. How can I do this?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Toshiba Satellite Pro L500 laptop on which I installed the beta of Ubuntu 11.04. Things seems to work smoothly at the moment, but with one niggle. I have an external monitor connected to my laptop, and can manage to have a dual-screen configuration, and I am able to move the mouse from one screen to another correctly; however, the menus, status bars and window icons remain stubbornly only on the laptop screen. This is happening with Unity as well as Gnome.
If I disable the laptop screen with grandr (the Gnome GUI for xrandr) they do migrate on the external screen, but they swoosh back to the laptop if I reactivate it. Trying to alter the layout with grandr or using xrandr with the --right-of option from the command line do not change anything good. I randomly get the laptop screen to become half black.Incidentally, something like it used to happen with Fedora 12 (I think) some months ago.
Recently I connected second monitor to my laptop. Everything seems ok. I got what i wanted: extended working space, panel on second monitor with windows list that are present on corresponding screen. One thing that is annoying me is GDM. It displays login dialog on my second LCD not laptop. Is there a way to make GDM to display login dialog window on my laptop or how to designate laptop LCD as primary screen or something?

When using my laptop touchpad, I find that once I move to the other monitor or TV screen, I can't return back to my laptop monitor. My USB mouse, however, is able to transition from screen to screen with no problem. I am using ubuntu 10.04 but had the same problem with 8.04 before I upgraded. I have an NVIDIA graphics card, and use the nvidia-settings (which generates the xorg.conf file) to manage the screens. Here is my xorg.conf:

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have openSUSE 11.2 KDE with NVIDIA drivers. I have a TV on the left and a monitor on the right. In the Nvidia drivers this has also been setup as stated. The TV is on position 0:0 and the monitor is in position 1920:0. The monitor has been ticked in the drivers as the primary screen.
My problem is that all application open on the secondary screen and not the primary screen (monitor) as I expect. How to the OS/drivers that will ensure that application always open on the monitor situated on the right are welcome.
My setup at home uses a laptop, with a larger external monitor in addition to the built-in LCD panel, which is primary. I can see the larger monitor from the rest of the room and use it as my TV, for playing DVDs and various types of web video. However, it isn't ideal for Flash video. For instance, if I watch a video from Hulu or any other Flash-based site, I can expand it to full-screen mode.
However, no matter which monitor the browser window is on, the full-screen mode is always on the laptop LCD panel, which is both too small and not visible from most of the room. Does anyone know of a way to force the Flash video to play full-screen on the monitor I select instead of the primary? My video chipset is NVidia, using kernel 2.6.31 (Ubuntu).

I do not see how to switch the primary within NVidia's xserver app. Background Info: In order to get the TV out working, I disconnected the Monitor and booted the system - The TV-out then worked for the first time. Reconnected the monitor and rebooted again - both worked..but TV is Monitor0. All other options failed me when I set this up the first time

so I went to my profile and showed hidden files and found a cool .xml file called monitors under .config
opend it up and chooses the primary monitor I wanted

I'm using a laptop and running a secondary monitor to my TV. My laptop has ATI HD 3400 video card. The TV has a higher resolution than the laptop's monitor. When the video is full screened on the TV, the actual video uses the resolution of the primary monitor and not the second.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an ASUS 1000HE laptop running Lucid 10.04 (Desktop not netbook version) which I have connected to an external display (LCD). I don't intend to use the laptop by itself anymore therefore I have configured the display properties to turn off the laptop display and use the external display as primary. However, when the PC enters 'locked mode' or the display powers down after a defined period of time (as set in the properties) when I wake the PC and the display, it turns the laptop monitor back on .... switches the laptop screen to primary display (i.e. with the panels etc displayed on it) and extends the desktop to the external display! The only thing I can then do is go back into the configuration utility and turn the laptop monitor off again and boom, everything is fine and dandy displaying on the external display again! I don't really want to have to do this every time I come back to the PC after it has been locked nor do I want to write a script (if it can be avoided) to deal with it!

My (preferred) primary display has a dvi input and my other display is hdmi. I have them both plugged into only one of the cards. For some reason it keeps setting the hdmi display as the primary. And I want them in extended view. The ATI CCC suite does not support changing the primary monitor and I have tinkered with the xconfig but I do not really know what I am doing, so I have ultimately not been successful. here is my xorg.config file.

I have a Radeon HD 5830, running 3 monitors on 10.10 64bit with the 10.6 video driver. The three monitors ( from left to right ) :
DFP1 : 1152x2048
DFP2 : 1920x1200
CRT1 : 1360x768
The problem I'm having is getting the middle monitor to be the primary one.
Running
xrandr --output DFP2 --primary
puts the panel on the middle screen but my docky and icons stay on the left screen. Flash videos also open up on the portrait left monitor which looks awful. Ideally I would like the icons on DFP1, docky on P2 and flash videos to open on P2. But I would definitely settle for everyone to be on the middle screen and drag it around as I please.

I recently did a fresh install of squeeze. I have the stock 32 kernel along with the 34 from experimental (it is listed as stable by kernel.org). I installed version 195.36.24 of the Nvidia driver using the Nvidia installer, and after starting X the system became unresponsive.

I am a recent convert to Ubuntu 9.10. I have installed it on my by travel laptop, which is docked when at home with a 22' ViewSonic screen.
Under Windows all is good, I just plug it in and whamo, I can close the laptop lid and use the Viewsonic as my primary screen.
Under Ubuntu, it appears the above is impossible. I seek your guidance as below.

This obnoxious bar has just appeared in Smplayer at the top of the screen. It stays there even when I go full screen. Now full screen isn't full screen and there are black edges on both sides of the screen. I have not be able to figure out how to hide it. I do not need or want this onscreen display. How can I configure Smplayer to make this go away? How can I get my 16:9 full screen aspect ratio back? I have done nothing to mplayer or smplayer as far as editing any or changing any configuration files. I tried several videos and it displays on all of them. It was not there last time I used Smplayer.

Aside from Ubuntu, I've got Windows 7 installed, I didn't like it, it was kinda buggy, so, I'd like to uninstall it. But I don't know how to uninstall windows 7 without reformatting, because I don't want to lose Ubuntu.I was actually going to format, and just install Ubuntu by booting, but there's something wrong with my pc because every time I burn the *.iso image file of Ubuntu that I downloaded on the site, it says that it can't read the data on the CD, I've tried it like, five times, using different CD's and burning programs but, no luck. An error message will also appear about 'not being able to read the cd' when I double click it. I even read the page here about burning Ubuntu *.iso into a cd, I did everything step by step but, still no luck.

C: - a 65 Gb partition with Win7.
D: - a 150 GB partition with general data.
and 2 partitions by default - a 13 GB and a 3.5 GB one( I guess backup and recovery by Acer or sumthn)
I shrank the D: partition to 135 GB and had made the 15 GB unallocated space to install Ubuntu. Everytime I checked I got the free space shows as 'unusable' in the Ubuntu partitioner. I tried shrinking again with EPM, Win Disk Management and also Ubuntu partitioner. Each time the free space which showed up said Unusable. A friend of mine advised me to defragment and use 'GParted' through the live cd. I did so and when click on the unallocated space to format it said "IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO CREATE MORE THAN 4 PRIMARY PARTITIONS. If you want more partitions you should first create an extended partition. Such a partition can contain other partitions. Because an extended partition is also a primary partition it might be necessary to remove a primary partition first."
I didnt know all of my partitions were primary! And I dont even want D: to be primary. It just is there to hold some data.
i have 2 partitions. one with vista and the other with ubuntu. i would like to make another primary partition from the free space in my ubuntu partition. anyway to do this?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI somehow messed up my filesystem. I installed Ubuntu directly with LVM. This created an extended partition including a logical one. When I run out of space, I just increased my space (through VMware) and then added a new PRIMARY partition.
Then I added this one to the volumegroup and increased the logical volume. After I did this a few times, there were no longer any primary partitions allowed (only 4). Then I resized the FS, resized the logical volume, resized the volume group, and removed the physical volume. Now I'm no longer able to create an extended volume (only one) but it's not at the end (there are other primary partitions behind this one at the disk), so I'm not able to create some logical volumes.
What is the best possibility to add some space to the LVM and being able to do this a few times in the future again?

Does it matter that there is type "Linux" for sda4 or can I without damaging the lvm just change it (with cfdisk) to "Linux LVM"?
