Ubuntu Multimedia :: Image Software W/ Automatic Relative Positioning?

Sep 1, 2011

Is there (either raster or vector) FOSS editor where when moving a layer in the image editor, the program checks to see if might want to line up the objects either horizontally or vertically with a repeated spacing?Editors I would especially like to know how to do this in are GIMP, Inkscape, or mypaint.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Opening Images In Gimp And Controling Their Relative Size?

Jul 27, 2011

this should be easy but I dont know which option to use. I want to make a flier with Gimp, learned how to add fonts that are better than the crappy ones that come by default, but now I want to add images but want them to automatically scale to a size that I specify with a square I create by left clicking. I dont want to have to resize the entire image after measuring, I just want it to shrink/expand to fit an area that I specify for it.

Ubuntu :: Make A Disk Image Of 9.10 System - Automatic Wrapper For Windows Drivers

Feb 12, 2010

1. Make a disk image of my 9.10 system (formatted ext3, btw) on my Syology CS407 NAS so I can do a bare metal restore. Why is this a couple of clicks on my Mac and Windows boxes, but so far not easy on Jaunty? Did I miss something?

2. Drivers. Why can't I just have an automatic wrapper for Windows drivers so I can use any printer or scanner, or a simple point and click driver install for native drivers? I have my ethernet connected Brother MFC-7820N, and the Samsung CLP-315 that runs off my CS407 installed and working on my Jaunty, but it was way more work than expected. What is the easy, automatic or point and click way to install drivers?

3. Graphics drivers. I have decent cards in my big boxes, Nvidia GTX 200 series. But when I get kernel updates, I have to uninstall and reinstall the graphics driver. Is there an easy way to keep this working?

4. Is there one flavor of linux distro that has a really consistent standard for user interface? I like to be able move things around, but do like my menus to be consistent (and do I ever hate the MS ribbon!). I've really only tried Ubuntu.

Linux installs have come a long, long way from the old days, and are such a point and click operation that I just wonder what I'm doing wrong. Someone is bound to have sorted these things.

Hardware :: NVidia - TV Out Screen Positioning

Jul 4, 2010

I have a problem with my tv-out output under linux. The screen on tv appears at first "zoomed" and "shifted" to the left. the "zoomed" part can be remedied by playing with the TVOverscan value in nvidia-settings, and i managed to find the right value in order to have screen centered vertically. however there is no setting (or maybe rather I was unable to find one) to "shift" the screen left or right. I would need to move the tv output about 10cm to right because as it is now I have 10 cm cut off on the left side and 10cm of black space on the right side.

I remember having this problem back in the day when even the TVOverscan value wasn't working with then current nvidia drivers for me, i am very pleased to see it working in this last release, however the ability to move the screen around is still missing. It is implemented in windows version of the drivers though so i was hoping i maybe only overlooked the setting. Is there any setting I could put into xorg.conf or .nvidia-settings.rc similar in effect to TVOverscan but not affecting the "zoom" of screen but rather its position?

Hardware in question is:
Intel Q9450 CPU
Asus p5n-t Deluxe Mobo
2x NVidia 9800GT gfx
1280x1024@75 primary LCD Monitor
1024x768@50 Secondary crt tv-out PAL-I connected with S-VIDEO

Ubuntu :: Positioning Screens - Xorg.conf - Vertical Monitor Cursor?

May 23, 2010

Just a day ago I did a clean install of 10.04, after wiping the disk clean of 9.10. So far everything's working great. Except for my old dual-screen configuration. A year or two ago I badly wanted to have 2 monitors, where both would share the same desktop/workspace allowing me to drag windows back and forth between the two. After a lot of research, I finally was able to put together (although a probably quite sloppy) xorg.conf file that did the trick for me.

My case is somewhat unique in that my left monitor is horizontal, while my right monitor is rotated 90 degrees, and is vertical. In 10.04, my old xorg.conf file sort of works, but I have problems on my right, vertical screen:

- when I move my cursor onto the vertical screen, when I try to move it above where my left, horizontal screen's boundaries end, my cursor jumps down to the bottom of my vertical screen. I can't access anything with my cursor above this boundary on my vertical screen. Note that my vertical screen's bottom is in aligned with my horizontal screen's bottom, and that the vertical screen sticks up above the horizontal screen, as both have a 1680 x 1050 resolution/widescreen aspect ratio.

- however, it appears that only my cursor is having issues accessing the upper part of my vertical screen. When I maximize windows in this screen, they properly fill it up entirely like they should. (but I still can't access the top parts of these applications with my cursor).

So obviously there must be some boundary managing where my cursor is allowed to go, and another set of rules defining the boundaries that the windows themselves can be shown/take up. Also note that because of my right monitor being rotated vertically, I'm forced to use Xinerama. Can someone help me go through my xorg.conf file, below, to help me get this "simple" cursor issue fixed? I'm sure it's just one minor thing that has to be changed, but I'm not sure what:

Code:
# nvidia-settings: X configuration file generated by nvidia-settings
# nvidia-settings: version 1.0 (buildd@palmer) Sun Feb 1 20:21:04 UTC 2009
# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
# nvidia-xconfig: version 1.0 (buildmeister@builder57) Thu Jul 17 18:39:19 PDT 2008
# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sudden Automatic Log-off?

Aug 4, 2010

On one of our Lucid systems, we encounter frequent automatic log-offs - without recognizing any reason: The only common fact appears to be at least one further user being logged in (with graphic desktop). With no advance warning, the active user's screen first goes black, shortly after that, the KDM log-in screen (with the name of the automatically logged-off user) appears. Where the currently active user is lucky, it is not his own name and he can simply switch back to his desktop...Something in fact appears to crash: Programs that were running for the automatically logged-off user are obviously simply killed. (OOo next time starts with rebuilding lost documents, KMail forgets about currently edited eMails.)

HDMI output is correctly activated upon cable insertion, but when taking the cable out again, the desktop resolution remains the same (larger than my laptop resolution), so the panels etc. are invisible.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Automatic Switch Audo Output Control To Bluetooth?

Apr 25, 2010

I'm using a Hama Voiis bluetooth audio device connected to my stereo. Both my girlfriend (running 9.10) and me (10.4) can pair with, connect to and stream audio from whatever application we use to the device. However to do so requires a couple of manual steps which I'd like to optimise.

First it's necessary to manually connect to device, since we both want to stream to this, connecting manually seems the best since I suppose only one can connect at any one time. Once connected it's necessary to select "Output" in "Sound Preferences" in order to use the keyboard or multimedia keys to change the volume. This latter step is a little annoying since it has to be done every time we connect. Does anyone have a solution that automatically makes this change when connecting?

Fedora :: Fonts Very Small Relative To Rest Of System / Make Them Bigger?

Feb 12, 2010

I'm helping a colleague with his laptop, he finds the fonts within programs too small and they hurt his eyes. We have tried changed the fonts using System>Appearances>Fonts. Changed the dpi resolution in the "Details" section, and tried changing the screen resolution, but this doesn't work or make it better.

I have attached a screen shot to show the problem. As I hope you can see, the font size on the desktop and top tool bar is much larger than within the programs.

Can anyone help, we have looked through all of the menus we can think of, but nothing makes the font bigger.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Get A Very Pixelated Image From The Webcam?

Aug 9, 2010

I'm writing to ask for help with a quality issue when using my webcam on sites like chatroulette, and even testwebcam. My webcam, albeit not a very expensive webcam, is quite decent quality, the box claims that it is 2.0 megapixels but... I'm not too sure. However-- When using this webcam on flash sites, the quality drops - it seems - from 640 x 480 to a measly 160 x 120. I get a very pixelated image from the webcam, but using it in cheese it works perfectly fine, at 640 x 480.

The webcam also works on windows, and the quality is fine on flash sites. But, I wouldn't want the only reason to be using windows to be chatroulette. Here are some screenshots comparing the qualities, the first being a screenshot of the webcam in use on [URL]... and the second being a screenshot of the webcam in use in cheese. I probably look like a bit of an idiot in both of the pictures, apologies for that.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Does Not Burn ISO Disc Image To CD

Jan 4, 2011

I am having trouble burning an iso disc image that I downloaded of the Windows Vista Recovery disc for a friend who cannot boot her computer anymore. I downloaded the iso disc image and it mounts on my computer just fine, so it should be able to be burned as the disc image to a CD no problem. However, each time I right click on the iso file, and go down to Write to Disc, and then the menu comes up and I make sure that the destination drive is my CD/DVD burner drive with a blank CD-R in the drive, it burns the disc, but it always ends up being a CD with the file of the iso on the disc...!! It doesn't burn the image, it burns a copy of the image as a file! I uninstalled the CD/DVD burning software that was on my computer and installed CD/DVD Creator instead from the Ubuntu Software Center.

I tried following the steps on [URL] which tells how to burn a disc image from an ISO file. I follow it exactly, but I still get the same results: I get a disc that is not the image, but has the image on the disc. Now, I can mount the image on the disc on my computer, but that won't do my friend any good who needs to BOOT off this disc to fix her computer running Windows Vista. But ever since I wiped out my computer and went Ubuntu, I haven't been able to write an iso disc image to a CD or DVD properly. Does it matter if it is a CD or a DVD that is used? Like, if I put a DVD in, would the disc iso image burn to the DVD rather than a CD because of the way the image was made? For some reason I never thought it mattered, but does it?
