Ubuntu :: Gimp Batch Mode - Closing Images When Done With Them?
Jan 4, 2011
I need to close images I work with when I'm done with them. As an example scenario, I can open several images and work on them, but every time I open them they create new instances in gimp, meaning the gimp could in the end be using several gigs of ram for images I can't even see are there. Also, I can't start gimp for batch only (Using 2.7 dev version)Code:$ gimp -i -b "(script-fu-thing 1)"This is a development version of GIMP. Debug messages may appear here.(gimp:11407): Gimp-Core-CRITICAL **: gimp_viewable_get_stock_id: assertion `GIMP_IS_VIEWABLE (viewable)' failedgimp: fatal error: Segmentation fault

I want a simple short gimp batch script that will take one image, paste it into a predetermined layer on another image, export as png and discard changes. Unfortunately, I can't find any tutorials on using gimp batch. Anyone know any such tutorials (Or better yet, what my script needs to be)
So far this is what I have. I need a way to loop through the layers to check the name of them, I also need a way to ditch the previously opened files from memory (Otherwise gimp still has both images in memory) (I'm going to mark this solved so I can make a cleaner post once I get it together)

I don't know if it's possible but GIMP is able to receive command line arguments, so why not? Basically, I want to create a batch (action, macro or what it may be called) and then set up a cron job which will run every hour. So, it would be something like "If an image is in X folder, then resize, watermark & move it to Y folder".

I scanned hundreds of pages in gray scale and would like to batch process them to B&W. You can do this using the gimp GUI. what it does is get rid of all the gray shading from reflections off the paper when scanned. So you get crisp white backgrounds with black text and diagrams. I would like to simply do this to the entire group directory at one time as it would be quite a lot of effort to open them and do them one by one.

I'm having trouble getting Dave's Batch Process program to install in GIMP. DBP - David's Batch Processor
I'm running 11.3 KDE 64bit.
The instructions say to put the dbp1.1.9 in the GIMP plugins folder. But it doesn't show up.

Is there an easy way to batch convert CGM images into anything modern (preferably SVG, because they're vector graphics)? The furthest I've gotten is ImageMagick, which tries to open them, but dies saying it can't find "ralcgm", mhich I can't find in any repos.

I can't open any files such as .png's or .jpg's in gimp. How can I change this. I installed it via pacman. I don't know if this helps, but I'm running kde with arch. I'm guessing I need to add the path of libpng to the plugins section. What should I do?

FC 12 64 bit. When I print an image from Gimp 2.6.8, where is most of the work being done to create data that the printer can use - on my computer or on my printer? The printing of images on my HP Laserjet 4000 or my Officejet 7000 is relatively slow. Can I speed it up by having more of the computation done on my computer instead of on the printers? Or is most of the work already being done by the computer?

this should be easy but I dont know which option to use. I want to make a flier with Gimp, learned how to add fonts that are better than the crappy ones that come by default, but now I want to add images but want them to automatically scale to a size that I specify with a square I create by left clicking. I dont want to have to resize the entire image after measuring, I just want it to shrink/expand to fit an area that I specify for it.

I am logging the output of: top -b -n1 -c so I can keep track of which processes are using how much memory and CPU each minute. When top shows the full command line (-c), the command line text gets truncated at the edge of the screen. This is perfect when running and displaying in a terminal. However, I am sending STDOUT to a file for parsing later and want the full command name logged. Is there a way I can tell top to use a specific screen width? (I know it maxes at 512, that would be fine)
Is there a better way to achieve a similar goal: get periodic stats about which processes are running and how many resources they are consuming?

I have few thousands of icons from my OS/2 PC and I would like to convert them to format acceptable by LINUX GUI (*.png, *.xpm).I attempted to open an OS/2 *.ico files with few LINUx graphical apps (GIMP,Fspot, gThumb,Gwenview,Kolourpaint,Okular) but none can understand the format. It's somewhat problematic for me
to convert under OS/2 now so I'm looking for a LINUX app.Are there any LINUX apps that can convert OS/2 *.ico files to a LINUX format in BATCH MODE? If it requires manually "open then save-as", I can't repeat it few thousands of times.

If you had Gimp 2.6 (with gimp-plugin-registry installed) and installed Gimp 2.7 to try its new goodies, but Layer Effects are not showing, and when executing "gimp" from console you get these *nasty* errors:
Code:
This is a development version of GIMP. Debug messages may appear here.
gimp-user-install: migrating from /home/user/.gimp-2.6
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/lib/gimp/2.0/plug-ins/layerfx.py", line 23, in <module>
import gimp, gimpplugin, math
ImportError: No module named gimp .....
If you haven't install the 2.7 version yet. Before upgrading, backup "python" directory and then just restore it after installing 2.7.

Some of you may have had with issues after installing GIMP on Lucid Lynx 10.04. Which may be directly related to "gimp-help-en", which could prevent you from installing other applications and preforming system tasks. If so, use this method to fix it.
Process: (Terminal > $ sudo apt-get install gimp)
1. After installing Gimp go to the terminal:
2. Then load up the language support application:
3. Then it will ask you to install the "gimp-help-en", confirm it.
4. Fix'd
I think this issue is directly linked to a systems with multiple languages, but I haven't been able to test this theory out yet.

I am running Linux from a DVD, not installed. I am not good with installing software, but since the DVD cannot be corrupted, I am content to operate this way. Lately, I have been having problems that previously did not occur. When I try to click on the checkbox to get rid of emails, it doesn't register in most cases, or when it does, I am clicking multiple times so it registers twice, meaning it is unchecked again. Even more frustrating is some issues that are affecting my ability to update my business. I am trying to modify spreadsheets (text not calculations).
Whenever I try to click & drag to select something to change, it keeps jumping around to select only some of what I want, something else or some combination of the 2. When I try to copy and paste several fields from 1 column to another, everything from the several fields in the source column ends up together in the last field in the target column. I am also trying to download some images from a website. There is a single column of links to the images. I have to click on the link to get to the image in order to copy it, then back out to continue looking for more links to do the same.
My computer keeps jumping back 2 steps, then forward 2 steps, and sometimes I lose my place in that list. I could deal with it if it were a small number of links, but this is a list of probably close to 20,000 links. Again, i am operating off of a live DVD so this should not be corruptible, but this has just started happening, and has been an issue the last several sessions.

I know that ImageMagick's convert program can be used as follows to convert a collection of images -- say, in PNG format -- to a PDF file:
convert *png output.pdf
The problem with this is that each image is then stretched to fit on one page, whereas I would like to keep the original dimensions of the images and put as many as possible on one page in the PDF file before moving on to another page.

I am just spent half an hour hunting for a thing that should be totally available already:USB install images of Ubuntu, knoppix and all the others. And, the only good way are so far complicated tutorials where you extract the stuff from an CD image. Why??Hasn't everybody notices that CDs/DVDs are vanishing big time? That more and more systems don't have the readers anymore? Instead of following a 10 point instruction list, it would be nice to just be able to download a Ubuntu 8.10 or whatever USB image and be able to beam that DIRECTLY to a USB stick with a dd command.
Or am a missing something here? Does this exist? It should by no means be mariginal, considering how important USB stick in specific and flash memory in general have become.

I was trying to understand "batch" command, and I thought perhaps when I am logged in a terminal, in addition to X, there are multiple users, and man page says it is not suitable for multiple users. But then, you could never use batch in a terminal? So not sure... take a look, at first it works, then it does not. In this example, I am trying to use "batch" to make (touch) a new file. And the load is always very low.

I attempted to install Catalyst 10.11 for my ATI HD 2600XT and the system now only displays lines and a large block of pixels where the mouse would go. CTRL-ALT-F1 kills the system and does not provide a command prompt. This is a single installation, not dual-boot, but there is no Press Esc to access the Grub menu during startup so I cannot choose safe mode. I attempted to get into Recovery mode using the flash drive that I used to install the system and it tells me there is no Recovery kernel (I used the 64-bit Desktop installer, not alternative). Does anyone know an alternative to get into the Grub menu other than ESC during bootup? Alternatively, do I need to download the 64-bit Alternative ISO and create a new boot disk with it so I can access Recovery mode? Is there something else I'm not thinking of?
