Ubuntu Multimedia :: Migration Of Music From Windows 7 Professional To 10.10?
Mar 7, 2011
I have a Windows 7 partition with all my music. I'm a beginning Ubuntu user and I really like it and so would like to have my music in Ubuntu to create playlists and such since I'm spending more time here (in Ubuntu) and will likely spend most of it unless I require a very specific process. As it stands, I've been going back to my Windows partition purely because my playlists are all set up and all my music is in my music player.
How do I migrate the music from that partition to my Ubuntu one without simply copying GBs and GBs of music and taking up twice the space for the same thing?
refrain from suggesting an external drive, as I don't have the money for one currently.

I installed Ubuntu using Wubi, and I'm liking it so far. However, I still have Windows 7 installed as my primary OS, and I have accumulated a large collection of music. However, I cannot listen to this music in my Ubuntu system, which is a shame. I'm almost certain I am simply missing something, though I would like to double-check and ensure I am wrong before going further. Is it possible to access my music from my Windows partition on my Ubuntu 10.04 LTS partition?

I mostly need it to filter away background noise from interviews. So, the editor should allow me to tweak the recordings in the frequency domain. I'm a Kubuntu user, so, if possible, propose me KDE apps!

My problem is that in order to get Banshee to play my music thats in a Windows system on the LAN, I have to mount the volume first. This works fine if I navigate to the folder every time I startup Ubuntu and then play music through the library in banshee. However, I want to add a command to mount the volume on startup in the startup applications. I tried this in a terminal:
Code: sudo mount -a smb://home/p/My Music /home/username/Music/Music on Home This didn't mount anything. In fact, I couldn't even cd to the directory "smb://home/p/My Music". And yes, I did already make the directory "/home/username/Music/Music on Home". I'm thinking that my problem is really how do I write the address of a Windows network drive.

I've been supporting Microsoft OS and Apps since 1992. I hold a BSEET and am one test shy of MCSE. I have my own Computer Support business helping Individuals and Small Business keep their M$ PCs running.
I'm also sick of Microsoft. I'm tired of their manipulations, deceptions, and failure to produce Software that serves the needs me and my customers. I've been watching Open Source for 3 years hoping for an Alternative I could recommend to my customers. I'm very excited about Ubuntu 9.10.
There is just one thing missing. I think it can be done, but I need the help of the experienced Users here. What I'd like to do is copy the existing "C:Documents and Settings" folder to a USB Drive, Install Ubuntu using the entire disk (blow Windows away), and finally point the (excellent) Windows Migration Tool in Ubuntu to those Profiles and have it Import them just like it does in a Parallel Install.
I found this:
Code:
1.) Fire up live CD
2.) Open up a terminal
3.) sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list and remove all comments (#) in front of the repositories, and save the file.
4.) sudo apt-get ntfs-3g
5.) mkdir /mnt/win
6.) ntfsmount /dev/<disk and partition number here> /mnt/win
7.) mkdir /mnt/win/users
8.) mv /mnt/win/Documents and Settings/<userprofile here> /mnt/win/users/
9.) umount /mnt/win
10.) start ubiquity from the commandline wih the new-partitioner switch like this: ubiquity --new-partitioner
11.) after the setup is done do NOT reboot
12.) mount the disk in step 6 again and move the profiles from step 8 back to the Documents and Settings folder. Else Windows might throw a tantrum not finding profiles.
But it fails at the sudo apt-get ntfs-3g command. I guess that's because this was written for a version that's several years old. update the Process for v9.10?

I want to know that how could I make that website work in ubuntu also. Or you can say that I would like to know that WHERE would I paste my website source code files in Ubuntu so that I dont have to work again from scratch and make the website run easily in Ubuntu.

My wife has decided to give linux a try. I've installed Mint Linux 10 for her.Last week (bad timing) I converted her to Thunderbird. Now I have the task of moving all her mail folders and account settings from Thunderbird under Windows 7 to Thunderbird under linux.Other postings say all I have to do is copy the Windows profile directory to her home directory and rename it .thunderbird.
Doesn't work. When I start Thunderbird all it displays is a window for new account details.I tried just copying the <gibberish>.default directory across and renaming it to the one that was there. Again, no luck. Before it started using sqlite things were simple!I backed up with MozBackup, and then noticed that it only works with Windows.

I've had an awkward problem lately: every music player I use wants to instead of play music from my USB external hard drive, stream music from it. I have no idea why it suddenly started doing that. It may have been an accidental key-combo I pressed, thinking I had another window targeted and didn't bother pressing it again for my Totem music player. So I closed out of Totem in hopes that Rythmbox would work like totem used to. Well, it doesn't. It wants to stream music now.The problem with the streaming music is trivial, but here it is: I have a playlist with a little over 300 songs. I have Totem set to shuffle and repeat my music. Streaming music with it makes it just stop randomly after a few songs, and when I try to pause music and play it later it takes a good 30 seconds before it kicks back in at the beginning of the song.Like I always ask because I don't know enough to give back to the community yet, can anyone help me? Thanks.

I am trying to configure mpd (music player daemon) to access my music files that are stored on a windows server (NAS).
In the mpd configuration file I have to point to the directory in which the music is.
How do I do that? Is it something to do with mount?

I am looking for ideas for getting windows users into an ldap server. I am currently running a Linux server for my department and need to create an LDAP server which mirrors the username/password information for all of us as they are stored in the windows server here. I have the openldap server up and running on Ubuntu 8.04 and it works great; I now need to find some way to import user info into this from windows. I've seen discussions of using ldifde.exe to export the AD users into an ldif file. Is this the simplest way to go about it?
Our Linux server is currently providing us with much needed services using apache, and apache is authenticating using LDAP to our windows server (Using our windows username / password is required functionality). This windows server has some problem which causes it to delay for inordinate amounts of time between authentication requests and responses. The situation is such that this problem will not be addressed by IT staff. However, I have control over the Linux server so I am looking to just mirror the windows server on an LDAP server of my own. I could get away with updating the passwords in the Linux server.

My old xp is too slow, so I am intending on re-installing from scratch. I will first raid 0 my drives. Then install XP, followed by Ubuntu. From browsing on net it seems many people have problems with dual booting. (I did several years back). Any simple Free boot managers that are tried and tested. Can/will do some editing of Boot manager if required.

I want to install L7 iptables on my Linux that is used as a firewall for my internal network composed of some 200 computers. For my IDS , I plan to use Snort. Can I install snort on the same linux that I use as my firewall, or I have to install it on a different PC. Do I need to make use of L7 iptables, while I implement Snort. Shall I use Snort as IDS or IDPS? Where is the best place to install Snort, inside or outside the fire wall? Do I need to have a separate professional proxy installed on the linux, or the L7 proxy is sufficient? What would be the minimum hardware resource that Snorts requires(CPU, Ram)? For better security and performance , do I need to replace my present Linux with a PIX or any other hardware firewall?

We are trying to set up a livestream to make it possible to have the video from an HD (720p) outdoor security IP camera (h264) and use this on a few websites and use it as a demo to show what the possibilities of IP-television are. We also want to be able to stream it to some settop boxes that are in a customer environement in use. the big deal here is to take the stream from the camera on the on the server.
It would be nice to be able to interrupt the stream to show some other vids or pictures or some interactive messages. I have seen lots of these kinds of "local tv channels" but I don't have a clue how to set it up...
Uplink, money(well...) and hardware isn't really a problem.

After the download, the program started playing the music but I could not hear any sound. I have no problem in playing music in windows and the speakers are working fine. Do I need to download some plugins or any software for ubuntu linux? If yes, how and from where? And how to install that? Or is there any other problem?

i did:
mkdir /mnt/iso for the new folder
then:
mount -o loop /home/jordanamman/ResumeMaker/ResumeMaker Professional 16.0 Deluxe.iso /mnt/iso
(I've tried like 20 different combinations from different websites so idk what I'm doing wrong)

I am having issues with streaming media (music and movies), well just transfer speeds period, from my Windows Vista desktop PC and my Ubuntu laptop On my Windows PC I have two folders shared: Music and Movies. I also have Media sharing enabled on my Windows PC so that I can stream my music and movies to my Xbox360 and playstation 3. My game consoles have no issues at all with playback speed and quality. My laptop is a dual boot with Windows and Ubuntu.
Streaming to my laptop under Windows is fine. Playback is great and copying files to and from my network shares(Music and Movies folders) is fast. However, under Ubuntu, I've mounted an SMB share to the Windows computer to each folder. When I browse to an MP3 song in VLC, I cannot even listen to it! It'll constantly buffer every few seconds. Forget about trying to watch a movie in VLC either! XBMC and Boxee are useless because they NEVER finish scanning the network folders to even add my content - let alone try to stream them.
Trying to copy 89MB (an album worth of MP3s) from the Windows server to Ubuntu was going to take 8hours! Something is definitely wrong here and I just can't figure it out. Should I be connecting to Windows using some other networking method besides SMB? My network is setup with my Windows Desktop connected via 100MB ethernet to a wireless router. The Router is dual broadcasting in G and N modes. I have excellent connection strength and full network rate (54MB for G) on my laptop. Again, networking is fine when using Windows on the laptop.

So I am trying to install Plastic 2.8.148.0 on a virtual server. I have the install package that i copied over to the machine using WinSCP i then gave the file executable permissions by using the command "chmod +x PlasticSCM-professional-2.8.148.0-linux-installer.bin" But when i try to install the package by using the command "sudo ./PlasticSCM-professional-2.8.148.0-linux-installer.bin" It gives me the following message.
sudo: unable to execute ./PlasticSCM-professional-2.8.148.0-linux-installer.bin - No such file or directory
why it isn't recognizing it? I know the file was there because i was able to change permissions and i can see it with -ls command.
