Software :: ITunes Similar Music Manager And Player

Apr 24, 2011

There are three things keeping me from using Linux as my main.
Games, Adobe PhotoShop, and iTunes.

Does anyone have a music manager similar to iTunes for Ubuntu? Being able to import iTunes playlists and ratings and such would be great, but I'm not going to use an inferior program just because of that. I still hate all Apple computer products. And their business practices. Mobile is ok though. Linux Ubuntu 10.10

Ubuntu :: Windows 7 'loops' At Grub Loader

Jul 5, 2011

Basically the issue is that after I installed ubuntu 10.04 (on the same drive as Windows 7) I can no longer boot windows 7 from grub. When I select windows 7 in the grub boot menu it returns me to the boot menu.I looked through other posts who had similar problems, however, I wanted to post my own thread as I was unsure how to fix the problem based on information from other threads.

OpenSUSE :: Finding A Open Source Music Composition Editor Similar To Sibelius

Jan 19, 2009

Looking for a Open Source music composition editor similar to Sibelius. I found and settled on Rosegarden. Sound card is Creative Audigy 2 Platinum EX. I also have a midi keyboard which I would like to use with rosegarden. After downloading rosegarden, I found out in order to use the MIDI sequencer, I have to compile and install a real time kernel.

I finally got my kernel configured and installed, recompiled all the video/Ethernet drivers etc (after about a dozen tries ) Now on to the issue... As root, I can run the JACK audio server with realtime priority (as it is needed by Rosegarden) with the command

jackd -R -dalsa &

it starts up and seems to run. Then as a regular user, I try to connect to the JACK audio server using the qjackctl application. Qjackctl loads, but cannot seem to connect to the jack server, giving me the message "UNABLE TO CONNECT TO SERVER AS CLIENT"

HOWEVER, using the same procedure above as root, I can connect to the jack audio server with qjackctl. Rosegarden will start as a regular user but will also not connect to the JACK audio server (therefore: no sound or midi sequencer) Ive tried running Rosegarden as root (I didnt like having to do that), but get a similar error.

Through some googling, Ive found that JACK clients (qjackctl, rosegarden etc.) must be executed by the same user who launched the JACK server. -- no problem...Except I cannot run a realtime application as a regular user. I read online that regular users can start realtime applications using the LSM module (whatever that is, I couldnt find all that much).

how do I start the jack audio server in realtime mode as a regular user? if that is not possible...Is there a way to configure JACK so that it is started by root, but allows clients launched by regular users to connect?

General :: Windows - Wi-Fi File Transfer Similar To Bluetooth?

Sep 12, 2011

It's a pity that Wi-Fi is used only for network and internet connection. There's no information on a thing that can seem so simple - file transfer via Wi-Fi.I can imagine it similarly to how Bluetooth does it (or Wi-Fi spot search which is already implemented), but no, it requires complicated LAN setup. What I want is an easy cross-platform solution to transfer files via Wi-Fi.

General :: Windows - Set Up A Virtual Machine In A Similar Way To A Headless Server?

Aug 16, 2011

I have an Ubuntu Desktop 11.04 virtual machine using VirtualBox on my Windows 7 system.

Up until now I have been doing all my development within the Ubuntu environment but unfortunately, I don't like it. I want to move back to Windows, which is much more familiar to me but I would still like to access the virtual box like a virtual server as it is already set up with Apache, PHP, Pear, Git etc...

How can I make the two work in harmony? I essentially want to be able to start the VM and connect to it as if it was a server machine somewhere on my network, without having to actually buy another machine to put on my network.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: "Play To" Function Similar To Windows 7?

May 23, 2010

Is it possible to add a "play to" menu in the context menu in nautilus like in windows 7? For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about: When you right click a media file (avi/mp3/mkv etc) in windows 7, it lets you select "Play to" and then lists all upnp/dlna devices on the network, and the amazing thing is that when you select a device, the media file is actually played on that device! It would be so much easier to select a file and then "play to" my xbmc htpc, than to move the video to the htpc and then index it and then browse for it on the htpc and then remove it after I've seen it...

I couldn't find anything about a feature like that...? There must be someone else, beside me, that would love a feature like that? I know I can install ushare and stream that way, but the big difference is that the movie is started from my computer and not on the xbox, htpc, tv, av-reciever or what you use to watch movies over the network! It would make it so much easier! Setting up sharing, and then adding them to what you use for playback and then finally browse to your movie and selecting play is just not worth it when you know how much easier it can be done using "play to" for a few movies.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Listening To Music From Windows?

Aug 21, 2010

I installed Ubuntu using Wubi, and I'm liking it so far. However, I still have Windows 7 installed as my primary OS, and I have accumulated a large collection of music. However, I cannot listen to this music in my Ubuntu system, which is a shame. I'm almost certain I am simply missing something, though I would like to double-check and ensure I am wrong before going further. Is it possible to access my music from my Windows partition on my Ubuntu 10.04 LTS partition?

Ubuntu :: Lucid Loops On Login

Jan 20, 2011

This is a mature Lucid installation on an desktop machine. After having to hard reset it after a lockup due to a misbehaving USB peripheral, startup and shutdown started behaving oddly (e.g. shutdown going to a login screen).

Now it is in a state where - on start up - after logging in successfully, the screen goes dark for a moment and then loops back to the login screen.

Have tried:
- booting in recovery mode,
- running dpkg repair (just an update of sudo)
- running in failsafeX - where problem is still present (so I assume the nvidia video drivers not to blame here)

Maybe relevant that:
- only one user account so cannot try logging in as another user,
- home folder is encrypted.
- hard disk has plenty of spare space.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Migration Of Music From Windows 7 Professional To 10.10?

Mar 7, 2011

I have a Windows 7 partition with all my music. I'm a beginning Ubuntu user and I really like it and so would like to have my music in Ubuntu to create playlists and such since I'm spending more time here (in Ubuntu) and will likely spend most of it unless I require a very specific process. As it stands, I've been going back to my Windows partition purely because my playlists are all set up and all my music is in my music player.

How do I migrate the music from that partition to my Ubuntu one without simply copying GBs and GBs of music and taking up twice the space for the same thing?

refrain from suggesting an external drive, as I don't have the money for one currently.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: 11.04 Mounting Windows Music From LAN On Startup

May 17, 2011

My problem is that in order to get Banshee to play my music thats in a Windows system on the LAN, I have to mount the volume first. This works fine if I navigate to the folder every time I startup Ubuntu and then play music through the library in banshee. However, I want to add a command to mount the volume on startup in the startup applications. I tried this in a terminal:

Code: sudo mount -a smb://home/p/My Music /home/username/Music/Music on Home This didn't mount anything. In fact, I couldn't even cd to the directory "smb://home/p/My Music". And yes, I did already make the directory "/home/username/Music/Music on Home". I'm thinking that my problem is really how do I write the address of a Windows network drive.
