Debian Installation :: Upgrading Windows On A Computer With Dual Boot

Aug 30, 2014

I recently installed Debian 7 on a dual boot with Windows Vista. Thus, when I boot the computer, I am prompted by a GRUB screen to select Windows Vista loader, Debian, and Debian (recovery mode). I would like to upgrade Windows Vista to Windows 7. Will this cause an issue with GRUB? Will a Windows 7 loader be added to the list or will a Windows 7 loader replace the Windows Vista loader? Will there have to be a setting change within Debian? Within Windows?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Migration Of Music From Windows 7 Professional To 10.10?

Mar 7, 2011

I have a Windows 7 partition with all my music. I'm a beginning Ubuntu user and I really like it and so would like to have my music in Ubuntu to create playlists and such since I'm spending more time here (in Ubuntu) and will likely spend most of it unless I require a very specific process. As it stands, I've been going back to my Windows partition purely because my playlists are all set up and all my music is in my music player.

How do I migrate the music from that partition to my Ubuntu one without simply copying GBs and GBs of music and taking up twice the space for the same thing?

refrain from suggesting an external drive, as I don't have the money for one currently.

Debian :: How To Exit Windows Mgr (Cannot Shut Down Computer)

Apr 22, 2010

I could be wrong, but I swear that when I first considered switching to Linux a few years back the gnome windows manager's main menu had an option to exit said windows manager. There is obviously no such option now. Looking at some other forums, it seems that you can START gnome properly... but to exit the windows manager you have to kill processes? If I want to close down the Gnome WM without rebooting the computer - say, to just try TWM alone, or some other WM - there must be a 'legal' way to do it.

Ubuntu Installation :: Windows 7 Selected In Grub Reboots Computer?

Mar 5, 2010

I recently installed Ubuntu, my first experience with Linux, but when I try to boot a previously installed Windows 7 from grub, it reboots the system back to the grub screen. I can boot to Ubuntu.

I've been searching for and working on possible solutions for several days to no avail. There are some similar posts on various forums but few quite like mine, and solutions I've read haven't solved my problem. I tried booting to the windows 7 repair disk and selecting the repair start up option, but the message tells me no problems were found.

General :: Moving Data From Computer To Windows Computer

Jun 28, 2011

I have a situation where I am trying to move some data from a Linux computer to a Windows computer. In all there is 700GB of data to move in about 1.5 million files, so I don't want to do this over the network. My first thought was to use an external USB hard drive and create an NTFS partition and copy the files from the linux computer to mount on the Windows computer. After 4 days of copying without completion I abandoned that idea. I thought the NTFS might be slowing it down, so I created an EXT3 partition. 4 Days later it was still copying. I did some calculations and there was no way the USB 2.0 connection was that slow. I then used ddrescue and cloned the drive to be copied overnight and it took about 12 hours. i was able to mount the USB drive under Linux and access the files appropriately. The only problem is that I can not access that USB drive on my Windows 7 computer. I have tried Explore2fs, DiskInternals Linux Reader, and Ext2 Installable File System For Windows, but none of them is recognizing the external drive.

Debian Installation :: 99 99 99 When Booting Up Computer?

Jul 8, 2010

having major trouble installing Debian.erased the data on one of the partitons that used to hold Vector Linux and tried to install Debian on but it failed for some reason.Since I'm dead tired (well, was) I thought I would call it a night and just wait until tomorrow to finish the installation. So, I rebooted my computer and all it would do is this:

99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99
99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99

It would just do two or three rows of 99's and then it would hang. Does anyone know what is happening? Right now I have Windows on this computer and I can't even boot into that. The data for Windows is safe but I just can't boot into Windows for some reason.n erasing sda6, did I accidentally erase LILO too (Vector was the first option on LILO)?If someone has posted this problem in the past

Debian Installation :: GNU / Linux On A Single Drive (SSD) Desktop Computer

Jan 5, 2015

I'd like to install Debian GNU/Linux on a single drive (SSD) desktop computer. The filesystem of choice is BTRFS and a couple of thing are not really clear to me:

- is a swap partition still necessary and what's the best fs for it?
- what partition scheme would be suggested?

I thought about 2 different btrfs partitions, one for /home and one for / (root) but from what I read if I'm giving the raw drive to BTRFS that would be more beneficial performance-wise, is that correct? (actually I don't even know if 2 btrfs partitions on the same drive is even possible).

If should I got for "donating" the raw/whole drive to btrfs which subvolumes scheme would be suggested for an easy management of the snapshots and backups? should /home be a subvolume or that's not really necessary.

Security :: Professional Proxy Installed Or L7 Sufficient?

Nov 18, 2010

I want to install L7 iptables on my Linux that is used as a firewall for my internal network composed of some 200 computers. For my IDS , I plan to use Snort. Can I install snort on the same linux that I use as my firewall, or I have to install it on a different PC. Do I need to make use of L7 iptables, while I implement Snort. Shall I use Snort as IDS or IDPS? Where is the best place to install Snort, inside or outside the fire wall? Do I need to have a separate professional proxy installed on the linux, or the L7 proxy is sufficient? What would be the minimum hardware resource that Snorts requires(CPU, Ram)? For better security and performance , do I need to replace my present Linux with a PIX or any other hardware firewall?

Server :: Setting Up A Professional Livestream From IP Camera

Dec 17, 2010

We are trying to set up a livestream to make it possible to have the video from an HD (720p) outdoor security IP camera (h264) and use this on a few websites and use it as a demo to show what the possibilities of IP-television are. We also want to be able to stream it to some settop boxes that are in a customer environement in use. the big deal here is to take the stream from the camera on the on the server.

It would be nice to be able to interrupt the stream to show some other vids or pictures or some interactive messages. I have seen lots of these kinds of "local tv channels" but I don't have a clue how to set it up...

Uplink, money(well...) and hardware isn't really a problem.

Debian Installation :: Disk Partitioning Consistently Triggers Computer Restart

Jan 3, 2016

I'm trying to perform a clean installation of 8.0.0-i386 from a CD. Seven consecutive attempts all result in the same issue: Almost immediately after commiting the disk partitioning settings (i.e., to begin formatting), the computer does a hard restart. I have tried doing the partitioning as early as possible in the installation process, just in case the system is running out of memory; I have also tried using the lowmem option. I suspect the problem may be related to my very old hardware...

Micronics serverboard 440BX chipset*
Dual Pentium II 450MHz CPUs*
1GB ECC RAM*
Adaptec AHA-2940UW SCSI adapter
IBM Ultrastar 36GB UW-SCSI HDD
ATAPI CD-ROM
Matrox G100 AGP video card*
*starred items are all original parts from an Intergraph server with validation/verification stickers attesting to their intercompatibility

No POST errors, the HDD passed verification using the Adaptec ROM utility, all unnecessary hardware removed

Could it be that I need an older release or some custom-compiled kernel? The only thing I could come up with on the web was that a lot of people have a similar failure with modern distros on non-PAE CPUs, but the P-II should not be susceptible to this problem.

Debian Installation :: Creating A New Boot Partition - One Of My Disks In My Computer Crashed

May 11, 2011

One of my disks in my computer crashed, it was the one containing /boot and some data partitions. The other system and /home partitions were on a second disk, which is ok.

I was wondering, can I create a new /boot partition, and keep on using the rest of the system? Can I somehow do it with a chroot from a live/installer disk, run grub, and use my system again? I have another disk which I can put in the system, but there is even an unused partition on the disk which is ok (but it is rather big for /boot).

Debian Installation :: Computer Hangs After Install On External Hard Drive With Flashing

Apr 4, 2016

I have spend way too much time on this and it still fails. I installed the debian 8.3.0 AMD64 CD1 iso image on an empty external USB 1TB Western digital My passport Ultra. I use the graphical install method and the installation process of Debian appears to go fine, except it informs me at one point I am missing some nonfree firmware for something with wifi, but that shouldn't relate to this.

*FYI I put GRUB on the external hdd, sdb in this case.
*windows 7 is on the internal hard drive and I excluded it from the boot sequence
* using laptop lenovo t410

I reboot my computer and it hangs with a flashing - in the upper right corner. Never even gets to GRUB. For awhile I thought I might have partitioned something wrong, but I am now convinced that isn't likely. I tried countless number of different partition configs. Separate /boot partition and I also tried using guided partitioning.

I mounted the partitions of the external hard drive using another OS and GRUB appears to be there. So it is there.

I know some Western digital hard drives have added priopertary firmware crap, so I tried installing on a external Seagate drive and it still hangs. I tried installing linux mint on the Western Digital drive and it works fine!

BIOS settings fine. USB settings fine. I tried booting via the boot menu and moving the USB HDD to the top of the list.

I also tried installing with Debian Live on a USB, but that actually has more problems for some reason. I can never get passed the partitioning phase because it fails to create /boot or /swap partitions saying something about how they are still in use and another thing about how the partition table hasn't been updated in the kernal yet.

It seems I might be having this same issue, not sure: [URL] ...
