Jan 22, 2010I have an NTFS volume on my system which I regularly access from within Ubuntu 9.10, mostly to play the plethora of DVD images (*.iso files) stored there. I use VLC Media Player to watch the content. For some reason, VLC's file browser only shows a small subset of the files by default. I have to select "All Files" instead of "Media Files" to see all the *.iso's.
What's this about? Since they're all the same type of file, I don't understand why some would be viewed as "media files" but others not. If the files were on a Linux-type filesystem (ext3 etc.) I would guess it had something to do with permissions, but I'm not sure how file ownership & permissions apply to a mounted NTFS volume.

May 23, 2010i have geforce 8800 gts, ubuntu 10.04 when i don't install nvidia drivers movies plays great ( including HD) but programs (games,media center) does not play well at all choppy when i do install the opposite is correct movies plays choppy but all other progs plays great.

Feb 1, 2011I was just wondering if there is a software package that will allow my linux server to process video files (mainly AVI and MKV) so that they can be streamed over the network or Internet. I obviously wouldn't be able to stream files between 600MB and 8GB over the Internet and have it play smoothly. What my plan is to setup something so that I can stream my videos over the Internet when I am not home. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Or maybe there's a software that can break the video file into "parts" and only send out blocks at specific intervals?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Video/Disappearing Media Players?
Jan 10, 2010I am using Ubuntu 9.10 dual booted with XP on a laptop. Whenever I try to play any video files, even just bog standard avi files, the media player just shuts down and disappears. This has happened with the movie player that comes with the OS as well as VLC. I also tried out Dragon Player and the files seem to load up and when played the timeline slider just skips across to the end in about 5 seconds but no picture is shown during this time. The codecs all appear to be installed fine even though I know that VLC doesn't require them. My video card is ATI and I know that it works fine as these files play alright when booted up into XP, Hi-Def included.

Mar 7, 2010I was setting up my Totem Movie Player on Ubuntu 9.10 and at first it wouldn't play dvds at all. So, I went online and entered these two commands into the terminal to play restricted dvds.
sudo apt-get install libdvdread4
sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh
DVDs will now play on Totem, but now I don't have any video. I can hear sound and if click around the screen I can get it to play but I still don't have any video. I also tried both dvd drives on my computer and tried different DVDs. Still same thing.

Nov 12, 2010I'm trying to play videos from my flip ultrahd recorder and it's plays the audio fine but the video skips. It shows the video for a second then stops for 2 or 3 seconds and shows the video for 1 second and so on and so forth. Like the video is lagging or something. Anyone familiar with this problem. I also have dragonplayer and pitivi that I'll try also.

Sep 21, 2010After seeing how good netflix movies looked over a wireless connection I decided to pull out an old desktop to see if I could up a basic media player . I loaded Ubuntu 10.4 and was impressed how fast and clean the computer ran. I also downloaded the latest version of boxee. I was disappointed with the quality of video; video was not very sharp, there were square blocks(pixelated) in dark areas of the picture. At this point I am trying to decide if the poor quality is due to my video card, boxee, CPU or if I am expecting too much from web content. should I just a browser or VLC. Naturally I would like to spend little money and use what I have. If however my hardware is not salvageable for what I want to use it for, I would like to know. Any opinions?

Apr 13, 2011VLC Media player has been giving me a few problems and I'm hoping someone here has a fix for this issue.Yesterday I was playing an avi file and my browser, that was also running, froze up in the background. At the same time my video became choppy and started to freeze. I shut down firefox and vlc but when I opened it back up all of my avi files where greyed out. I've posted a request for help on the vlc forums but no one has responded. Has anyone else experienced this problem? It's frustrating because my vlc player will still play dvd's but it won't play any avi files. Oh and I tried the drag and drop option per a suggestion but all I get is sound with no video. Lastly, I should mention that I'm a multi tasker and was also trouble shooting a problem I was having with amarok, which I've since uninstalled. Could amarok have some how screwed up my files? I've even uninstalled an reinstalled vlc but nothing works

Jan 20, 2011I am not sure what is happening with my music, but it's driving me mad and making me pull out my hair. My ID tags are not being read correctly through through both Rhythmbox and Banshee, but my tag editor, dBpoweramp, and Ubuntu properties reports the information correctly. All of my music is stored on another computer stream via the network. For example, I have an album by X Japan label as this:Track: Break the DarknessArtist: XAlbum: I'll Kill You EPYear: 1985
But banshee breaks up the album into two different albums, and on top of that, Banshee see it as X Japan, but reads it as X for the artist. And it's not just this album, it happens to a lot of my albums, sometimes they are missing tracks or mislabel or missing cover art, etc, etc, but only within the media player. Gnome Media Player also plays them silently.

The files in question were videos taken with one of those Flip cameras, but I only need the audio off of it.

However, when I open system -> administration -> add/remove software, nothing is available. Trying to enable any of the sources listed under software sources tries to use the internet, which I don't have up yet and I don't see any option to add a new source... although I don't know why adding software from the install media would not be an available option by default?So how do I add/remove software from the install media using this add/remove software management tool? I don't want to have to browse the dvd directly for packages, I want to browse by the nice categories and have any dependencies taken care of for me... and the searching capability is nice to

Video is not appear with those players and can see only black screens. Sound works well. I think there are some troubles with codecs, But though I installed some codecs and restricted-extra, there are no improvements. What should I do to see video with this system? Nov 27, 2010I'm running it in a virtual machine right now, because when I tried to dual boot my computer, it broke my hard drive.
I'm having a problem playing .mp4 files though. My phone only takes videos in this file format, and most of the time I'm working with large amounts of files, so converting them isn't an option. I've tried many different players, and they all lag like crazy, making the video nearly unwatchable. This is a huge flaw for me, and one reason I'm not bothering to try dual booting again...
Ubuntu Multimedia :: Ushare Not Seeing HD Mkv Video Files?
Dec 31, 2010I have a Samsung BD-6800 blu-ray player that i want to stream HD mkv files to from my pc. I made sure DLNA was enabled in the /etc/ushare.conf file. The blu-ray player sees my pc perfectly and i can navigate to the folders where the videos are stored, however when i select a folder with videos in it all that is shown is an option called "upper folder" which takes me back to the root directory. The videos are nowhere to be found. I checked on the Ushare web site to see if mkv files are supported which they are.
Here is what my /etc/ushare.conf looks like.
