Ubuntu Multimedia :: VLC Media Player Doesn't See Files As "media Files"

Jan 22, 2010

I have an NTFS volume on my system which I regularly access from within Ubuntu 9.10, mostly to play the plethora of DVD images (*.iso files) stored there. I use VLC Media Player to watch the content. For some reason, VLC's file browser only shows a small subset of the files by default. I have to select "All Files" instead of "Media Files" to see all the *.iso's.

What's this about? Since they're all the same type of file, I don't understand why some would be viewed as "media files" but others not. If the files were on a Linux-type filesystem (ext3 etc.) I would guess it had something to do with permissions, but I'm not sure how file ownership & permissions apply to a mounted NTFS volume.

Fedora :: Use To Organize All Of The Files For Class (teaching)?

Aug 26, 2010

I have a folder in my /home/user/documents/ directory, which I use to organize all of the files for class (teaching), early this week I moved all the contents of that directory to a subdirectory, and began writing lectures for the new semester. I just sat down at my computer and all of the changes I made to the directory have reverted to the way they were a week ago. Files are gone, the lectures I had written so far are gone, my syllabus is gone... I had a symlink to the directory on the desktop, its still there, but it's broken. The directory is a symlink to an NTFS partition, the /Documents directory is shared between the two OS's. Did this cause the problem?

Luckily I had today's lecture backed up on my website... so, i'm not sunk for today.. but.. this really scared me.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: VLC Media Player Won't Play AVI Files?

Apr 13, 2011

VLC Media player has been giving me a few problems and I'm hoping someone here has a fix for this issue.Yesterday I was playing an avi file and my browser, that was also running, froze up in the background. At the same time my video became choppy and started to freeze. I shut down firefox and vlc but when I opened it back up all of my avi files where greyed out. I've posted a request for help on the vlc forums but no one has responded. Has anyone else experienced this problem? It's frustrating because my vlc player will still play dvd's but it won't play any avi files. Oh and I tried the drag and drop option per a suggestion but all I get is sound with no video. Lastly, I should mention that I'm a multi tasker and was also trouble shooting a problem I was having with amarok, which I've since uninstalled. Could amarok have some how screwed up my files? I've even uninstalled an reinstalled vlc but nothing works

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Files Not Being Read Correctly In Media Player?

Jan 20, 2011

I am not sure what is happening with my music, but it's driving me mad and making me pull out my hair. My ID tags are not being read correctly through through both Rhythmbox and Banshee, but my tag editor, dBpoweramp, and Ubuntu properties reports the information correctly. All of my music is stored on another computer stream via the network. For example, I have an album by X Japan label as this:Track: Break the DarknessArtist: XAlbum: I'll Kill You EPYear: 1985

But banshee breaks up the album into two different albums, and on top of that, Banshee see it as X Japan, but reads it as X for the artist. And it's not just this album, it happens to a lot of my albums, sometimes they are missing tracks or mislabel or missing cover art, etc, etc, but only within the media player. Why is this happening and has anyone else notice this?Ubuntu 10.10 x64Banshee 1.8.0Rhythmbox 0.13.1Music streamed over network

Ubuntu Networking :: Sharing Media Files On A NAS?

Mar 23, 2010

I thought I would try and be clever but have become stuck! I have bought a NEtgear ReadyNAS with a view of copying all sound files and photos to one place. I have a wired home network and a Windows XP PC which I have mapped the NAS to as a network drive. Then came the Linux bit. I have a laptop which I want to do the same with. I have set up the NAS so that it operates with both CIFS and NFS file systems. I can see the CIFS file system in the Network part of Ubuntu 9.10 but am having trouble in getting programs to see it. Ideally I want to use F Spot or Picasa to view the photos and then also use one of the audio packages to play music around the house. When I ask F Spot or Picasa to search for files or folders, the network does not show up in the list.

Ubuntu Installation :: Media Player Can't Run .exe Files

Feb 20, 2011

I am trying, or rather wondering if I could put Linux on a touch Media Player that I have purchased in Taiwan. It is a Garmma media player that has a lot of capability but I would like to have Ubuntu or Kubuntu or something of the sort on it. It doesn't have wifi on it, but it has an internal hard drive of 8gb and is expandable to 40gb with a flash drive. I am able to format the hard drive because it shows up on my computer as a removable drive. Now when I tried to install it through the flash drive it didn't work because the Media Player can't run .exe files. I have searched around on the internet to find out if I could do this and found nothing.

Ubuntu :: File Manager Than Can Organize By Tags - Like An Image Manage?

Oct 8, 2010

Over the years of working with both images (many) and other files (many more) it seems that it is easier to organize images. There are a variety of image software (digikam, gthumb, the new "shotwell") etc. Its easy to organize them with multiple references - date, multiple categories etc. This in fact makes it easy & efficient in our multi disciplinary world to access the same image for multiple needs.

However the same is not true for other files (od formats, pdfs etc etc) the only way we seem to be able to sort them is by what folders we make. Of course we can use meta search engines to find it by other keyword / dates etc. But it is not the same as being able to give multiple tags to a file and later being able to retrieve by that particular tag.So am wondering if such a file tagging / sorting and accessing "thingy" already exists and if so what is it. Or it is available and i don't know where to look.

Ubuntu :: Media Files Corrupt After Copy From NTFS

Mar 18, 2010

I recently installed the latest version of Ubuntu to setup a home media server. Previously, I was running a Windows Home Server. I added a new HD and mounted it during installation. This was ext2. I think mounted my 2 drives that had NTFS partitions on them from the Windows home server and copied all of my files over to the new ext2 partition. Everything looked great. I then re-partitioned by two old Windows Home Server Drives to ext3 partitions to setup a new file system for storage.

This is when the bad news became evident. While all of my .jpg, .mpeg, etc. files are there on my ext2 file system, I can not open them anymore. All programs (IE, paint, windows media player, Itunes, Photoshop, MS Office, etc.) are unable to open files they normally process. Did I somehow lose part of the files (a header, attribute or something) during this copy process?

Ubuntu :: VLC Media Player: Files Go Out Of Sync Over Time

Jul 8, 2011

I can't pinpoint when it started, but some time in the past several weeks, files have started going out of sync when I view them in VLC Media Player. Initially, sound and video are perfectly synchronized. After 10-20 minutes, it becomes obvious that the actors' mouths are not moving when I hear their lines.

If I stop playback, restart, and resume at the same point in the show, sync is again perfect for a while.

This is a really irritating problem. I cannot even get halfway through a half-hour TV show (really more like 22-26 minutes) without stopping & restarting.

As I stated, it's hard to point to a specific time when the problem started, but it could be connected to the upgrade to VLC 1.1.10.

Here's why I'm pretty sure this is not a problem with my files:

1) They are straight *.iso images of DVDs. No extra conversion/compression/processing so fewer opportunities for errors in the files.

2) The same files play back perfectly in Windows under all circumstances.

How did you fix it? Will we just have to wait for VLC 1.1.11, or is there a fairly easy way I can downgrade to version 1.1.9?

General :: Proper Way To Organize File Server ?

Mar 7, 2011

I am setting up a file server using Ubuntu and want to make sure I set up a folder structure that will last. Where should I be placing everything that I am sharing (Music, Pictures, Videos, etc)? In theory, if I was setting this up on Windows, I would create a folder directly under C: and set up the different areas of sharing under that (not that that approach would be best either).

Based on constructive criticism, the question is rather ambiguous. My question could be restated to ask "Where shouldn't I set this up? Would /usr be an appropriate place to start? Or would /opt be better?

General :: Organize Open Source Projects In The Community?

May 16, 2010

that guide me about how (what steps should we do) to organize open source projects in the Linux community. Our idea is to organize an open source project of OPENCVOpenCV is a computer vision library originally developed by Intel. It is free for use under the open source BSD license. The library is cross-platform. It focuses mainly on real-time image processing. Our idea is to organize an open source project in the Linux community, that be a point in which programmers using OpenCV can meet, to develop programs to recognize the road lanes.OpenCV can be used to recognize the road lanes, and allow a car drive alone (if you have a camera inside the car and a laptop mother board running Linux and controlling the car's steering wheel).

Here you have some example of what we want to do[URL]Unfortunately, even being free OpenCV many companies as SIEMENS are working in this, trying to develop an autopilot for cars that would cost a fortune and wouldn't be available for everyone (it will be closed and not free - as Linux). We believe in the free software and Linux. Our idea is to organize a community of programmers interested in computer vision and opencv to create computer programs, and to make the first platform in Linux able to recognize the road lanes and allow the cars to drive alone.

Our problem is we don't know how to do that. How do you organize an open source project in the Linux community? How do you get people involved in the project? How do you start from cero? Please, help us to organize a project of this type, to make the first autopilot of the automotive industry, based in Linux
