Ubuntu Multimedia :: Files Not Being Read Correctly In Media Player?
Jan 20, 2011
I am not sure what is happening with my music, but it's driving me mad and making me pull out my hair. My ID tags are not being read correctly through through both Rhythmbox and Banshee, but my tag editor, dBpoweramp, and Ubuntu properties reports the information correctly. All of my music is stored on another computer stream via the network. For example, I have an album by X Japan label as this:Track: Break the DarknessArtist: XAlbum: I'll Kill You EPYear: 1985
But banshee breaks up the album into two different albums, and on top of that, Banshee see it as X Japan, but reads it as X for the artist. And it's not just this album, it happens to a lot of my albums, sometimes they are missing tracks or mislabel or missing cover art, etc, etc, but only within the media player. Why is this happening and has anyone else notice this?Ubuntu 10.10 x64Banshee 1.8.0Rhythmbox 0.13.1Music streamed over network

I have an NTFS volume on my system which I regularly access from within Ubuntu 9.10, mostly to play the plethora of DVD images (*.iso files) stored there. I use VLC Media Player to watch the content. For some reason, VLC's file browser only shows a small subset of the files by default. I have to select "All Files" instead of "Media Files" to see all the *.iso's.
What's this about? Since they're all the same type of file, I don't understand why some would be viewed as "media files" but others not. If the files were on a Linux-type filesystem (ext3 etc.) I would guess it had something to do with permissions, but I'm not sure how file ownership & permissions apply to a mounted NTFS volume.

VLC Media player has been giving me a few problems and I'm hoping someone here has a fix for this issue.Yesterday I was playing an avi file and my browser, that was also running, froze up in the background. At the same time my video became choppy and started to freeze. I shut down firefox and vlc but when I opened it back up all of my avi files where greyed out. I've posted a request for help on the vlc forums but no one has responded. Has anyone else experienced this problem? It's frustrating because my vlc player will still play dvd's but it won't play any avi files. Oh and I tried the drag and drop option per a suggestion but all I get is sound with no video. Lastly, I should mention that I'm a multi tasker and was also trouble shooting a problem I was having with amarok, which I've since uninstalled. Could amarok have some how screwed up my files? I've even uninstalled an reinstalled vlc but nothing works

I usually use VLC because of its reliability.
Today, I need to play some WAV files. But VLC plays the WAV files silently.
Gnome Media Player also plays them silently.
Movie Player, on the other hand, plays them correctly.
how to get VLC to play WAV files?

Crystal Player has one very good playback speed troubleshooting feature - it uses large buffer of decoded frames (about 50% of RAM). Is there any player with such features in ubuntu?

I am trying, or rather wondering if I could put Linux on a touch Media Player that I have purchased in Taiwan. It is a Garmma media player that has a lot of capability but I would like to have Ubuntu or Kubuntu or something of the sort on it. It doesn't have wifi on it, but it has an internal hard drive of 8gb and is expandable to 40gb with a flash drive. I am able to format the hard drive because it shows up on my computer as a removable drive. Now when I tried to install it through the flash drive it didn't work because the Media Player can't run .exe files. I have searched around on the internet to find out if I could do this and found nothing.

I can't pinpoint when it started, but some time in the past several weeks, files have started going out of sync when I view them in VLC Media Player. Initially, sound and video are perfectly synchronized. After 10-20 minutes, it becomes obvious that the actors' mouths are not moving when I hear their lines.
If I stop playback, restart, and resume at the same point in the show, sync is again perfect for a while.
This is a really irritating problem. I cannot even get halfway through a half-hour TV show (really more like 22-26 minutes) without stopping & restarting.
As I stated, it's hard to point to a specific time when the problem started, but it could be connected to the upgrade to VLC 1.1.10.
Here's why I'm pretty sure this is not a problem with my files:
1) They are straight *.iso images of DVDs. No extra conversion/compression/processing so fewer opportunities for errors in the files.
2) The same files play back perfectly in Windows under all circumstances.
How did you fix it? Will we just have to wait for VLC 1.1.11, or is there a fairly easy way I can downgrade to version 1.1.9?

I just installed Ubuntu on a net book. I'd like hook it up to my car's aux jack and use it to play FLAC files in my car. Is there a an media player that would be good for that? If I could set multiple hot keys I could set one side of the key board for forward and back.

Since I can't get LinuxMCE diskless mds to work I am going to try and use another approach. What I want to do is be able to store media (pics, audio, ripped dvds) on a central server and access the across the network with a media player in Ubuntu or Kubuntu that I can connect to the TV and entertainment system.
What media player to use and how I should set that up? I might use windows server for the shares just because I am used to it unless theres a better way. I have a pretty beefy server just waiting for media files.

I have just upgraded my ubuntu dist from 9.10 to 10.04 via the Update Manager inside gnome. I spend a lot of my spare time lying in bed watching (legal) movies using VLC Media Player. I have never before the dist upgrade had any issues with this although since the upgrade I have found the VIDEO in the movie crashes usually around halfway through the movie although the audio remains fine and continues through to the end of the movie.

I am trying to stream a live dvb feed to windows media player on a number of desktops. I have VLC and all the codecs etc installed.
I am starting my stream with the following command:
Code:
After vlc loads, I get the following error:
Code:
It seems your FFMPEG (libavcodec) installation lacks the following encoder: MPEG Audio layer 1/2/3.
If you don't know how to fix this, ask for support from your distribution.
This is not an error inside VLC media player. Do not contact the VideoLAN project about this issue. After some searching around, I found a guide on setting up ffmpeg at [url] which I have followed. I am still getting the error.
Do I need to add any other codecs to make this work?

Unfortunately, being the fact that I'm a gamer; I need to dual boot with Windows 7. I'm after a nice music player with a similar GUI to Banshee or Rhythmbox in their minimalism. Something as Gnome looking as possible and very lightweight on recources.

I have an ipod classic 160gb, that I sync with my machine at home.
I use Linux at work, and want to just plug my ipod and just listen to the tracks, with all the playlists and such. I don't want to sync nothing, I just want to listen to the tracks as if I was using the ipod itself.
Why? Because this way I can use the usb port.
So, I don't want to manage my ipod in Linux, I just want to listen to the tracks on it in Linux, like it was a local library but it's instead in my ipod.
(I've tried gtkpod, it works to show my files, but I can't play, shuffle, etc. It would be interesting to have a complete audio software to handle everything like it was a local library)

Okay running on 64bit karmic 9.10 i have been trying to get this .ts file to play nicely on vlc, but no success of getting it work nicely what so ever. It actually starts under VLC and gives image and sound but not the way i would prefer it. I don't quite get it but when i start it with vlc it actually displays it with lower resolution this is HD file, as its a stream capture from tv but it outputs it with much smaller resolution about 320 x 180. Tried it with other players too but the only one that accepted it nicely was xine "but problems ahead again" it outputs no sound? the image though was and is what it should be.
Tried it with Totem too and it did accept it too actually "hurray! but with the same symptoms as VLC + it doesn't output any sound out from the file only the image is what gets generated out from the player. I ran VLC from the terminal and it outputs following data when i start to play the file:
[Code]...
so if any ONE knows what should i do, feel free to step up and advise me would be appreciated (thanks in advance) If this has value if's mpeg2 ts file. And no...the file ain't corrupted that much i know, but what could generate this problem. If it ain't broken? Seeking works nice etc... except the low resolution display.

I was setting up my Totem Movie Player on Ubuntu 9.10 and at first it wouldn't play dvds at all. So, I went online and entered these two commands into the terminal to play restricted dvds.
sudo apt-get install libdvdread4
sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh
DVDs will now play on Totem, but now I don't have any video. I can hear sound and if click around the screen I can get it to play but I still don't have any video. I also tried both dvd drives on my computer and tried different DVDs. Still same thing.

I have a file server running Ubuntu Server. No monitor or input hooked up...I just ssh into it for maintanance. I use it to store all of my music and video files. I was watching Hulu at work today and thought it would be nice if I could somehow stream or play my files from my file server while I was at work.
I have apache set up so I can serve websites from it so I was thinking if I could some how select the file to play and it play it in an embedded player, that would be fine. I'd like it to play music and videos.
Is there any way of going about this? I have minimal HTML experience, but I have extensive C/C++ experience and server experience. So I'm comfortable using some open source libraries to accomplish this.

I'm using the default Totem movie player to play all my mp3s. However, because I listen to a lot of podcasts(some over an hour in length), I'm looking for some kind of media player that makes it easy to navigate through long audio files. For example Winamp has global hotkeys that allow you to jump forward or backward by 30 seconds (something like that).

I am running Ubuntu latest revision, but for the last 2 revs I have had the same problem. I have tried removing and uninstalling all media players, codecs and everything with no luck yet. When I play an AVI it brings up a window saying I need the divx or mpeg-4 codec. Click here to download. When I click it, it tells me it can't find the required drivers. The audio plays but no video. I have installed the codecs from what I can tell. I have seen errors for DivX MPEG-4 Version 5, X-VID MPEG-4, and H.264.

Just spent the last 4 or so hours trying to get my Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook edition system to play streaming audio from this link: [url]
I have managed to download the relevant M Player, but when I click on the streaming audio link it pulls up the player, then nothing happens. It says "stopped" and when I click on the play icon nothing happens.
When I cut and paste the relevant link into M Player directly it looks as it it will work, it seems to buffer for about a second, then nothing happens again.
I have installed "Ubuntu Restricted Extras" and the "Medibuntu" repo is enabled. If this remains a codec issue (which it feels like) how do I find what codec I'm missing?
