Software :: Smaller Video File Size With Guvcview?

Feb 27, 2010

I'm looking for some suggestions to create smaller size video files with the following equipment: Logitech Webcam C200 (USB), 640 x 480 resolution, 30 fps, using guvcview software. I'm new to doing video and wish to make short, up to 10 minute, clips. The above configuration puts out only .avi files and those files are huge. One small 30 second clip will cost 30 to 35 MB.

I have a friend using a Flip video camera putting out 30 second clips at 3 or 4 MB tops and the video quality is head over heels better than mine. His Flip system puts out MPEG-4(mp4) files. Other than buying a Flip video cam is there any way I can produce smaller file sizes? Maybe better quality too?

General :: Playing Broken Video Files (Binary Split Into 6 Parts)

May 26, 2011

Today encoders are getting smarter. They can compress Blu ray similar quality in 700MB. It seems header of video file contain info about frame rate, audio/video encoder etc. which can't be guessed. In MPEG audio , every part of file is independently playable. If a movie is binary split into 6 parts & I don't have the first part then it is unplayable.

Code:
example
ls
-rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 280M 2010-12-07 20:23 irn2-cd1.mkv
-rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 50M 2011-05-26 13:09 last-50M-cd2
-rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 50M 2011-05-26 13:44 first-50M-cd1
file *
first-50M-cd1: Matroska data
last-50M-cd2: data
irn2-cd1.mkv: Matroska data

I have a single VRO file from my camcorder, it is made up of about 100 different clips, they show up as individual clips on my camcorder, but only as a single file when I take it off the camera. Is there any program that can extract or split this file back up into the different clips? It's a pain trying to edit this when I may only need one clip out of it (total number of frames is over 132,000!

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Chromium Cache Videos Split Into Data Files?

Aug 14, 2011

streaming videos i sometime want to save them, after watching. generally they're saved as flash videos or mpeg-4 video, which is all fine.however periodically they're split-up and saved in smaller chunks with names like data_1, data_2, data_3 etc. these range from 14.0 - 44.0 MB. the file in question (currently i'm trying to save from the cache) was from divxden, or possibly divxstage.eu either way i think it used the totem plugin.so, my question is: does anyone know if these files can be stuck back together, or if this feature can be changed so streamed files are kept intact?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Change MP4 Video Files In A Directory To MP3 Audio Files?

Apr 29, 2011

What would be a nice, simple command to go through all files in a directory (no sub-directories), and change all the MP4 Video files I have to MP3 audio files (keeping the original filenames except for changing the "mp4" extension to "mp3")?

The files in question were videos taken with one of those Flip cameras, but I only need the audio off of it.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 LTS Lucid - Root Is Getting Smaller And Smaller

Jan 22, 2011

I am using 10.04 LTS Lucid, and I notice the free space of root is getting smaller and smaller.

Five months ago, there was about 3.9GB free space of root, but now it is only 1.6GB. I always run sudo apt-get autoremove and sudo apt-get autoclean every time the update is finished, and also use Bleachbit to clean the system, but both are useless.

I never faced such problem with older versions of Ubuntu, is there any measure to fix it?

Networking :: Programs Cannot Create Temp Files On Nfs-mounted NTFS File System?

Jun 14, 2010

I have an NTFS file system nfs-automounted on our RedHat servers. Users can read and write to the file system no problem, and can create new files, edit them, and delete them to their heart's content. The only issue is that utilities such as "dos2unix" cannot create temporary working files:

$ dos2unix events.0818.dat
dos2unix: converting file events.0818.dat to UNIX format ...
Failed to open output temp file: Operation not permitted
dos2unix: problems converting file events.0818.dat

This isn't limited to "dos2unix"; any other utility that creates a temporary working file gets the same problem. If I copy the file to a local file system like /tmp, it works fine. Here's the kicker: this works fine on Solaris systems. I can take the "dos2unix" utility over to a Solaris system that has that exact same NTFS file system automounted via NFS, and it works. No issues creating temporary working files at all.

Ubuntu Networking :: Split Video Stream Across Multiple N/W Interface?

I want to do a video streaming to a remote PC across the internet. The video bitrate is around 600 kbps. But my internet connection supports only a maximum upload bandwidth of 400 kbps.So I thought I will get one more connection and use the combined upload b/w of 800 kbps to stream the video. I hope there should be a way to split the stream across two interface and merge them together at the remote endpoint. All this has to be done at real time.

I'm certain that it's the ATI 128 mobile graphics card in the machine, but I don't have a clue about how to resolve the problem. I would love to run Linux on this system, but I don't have the technical background to get past the initial issue, which is the screwed up graphics.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Covert Video File To .asf File Type?

Jan 24, 2011

I want to be able to play a video file on my pda(Tungsten T5) but from memory the only video file i have seen playable on it was the asf file that is used when it starts up/reboots. I tried other file types in the past that were suggested in maybe a manual or forum or something but they never worked/played. I think it is because of the player installed and i tried installing another player but from memory that didn't install properly or just did not play anything. So if anyone knows of a way to convert files maybe using winff or mencoder i would love that info. I have been googling and have found nothing specific to what i am asking. I do not see anything in winff to convert to asf and cannot remember ever using mencoder.

1. There is not any .deb in the /var/cache/apt/archives.
2. The total content of /var/log is only 167.6 MB, that won't be a problem.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Cannot Watch Video Files?

I'm using Dell inspiron 1210 and installed netbook remix 10.10 recently. But I have trouble with watching video files with any players, including built-in player, SMPlayer, VLC media player.

Video is not appear with those players and can see only black screens. Sound works well. I think there are some troubles with codecs, But though I installed some codecs and restricted-extra, there are no improvements. What should I do to see video with this system? Those video files can be watched with my desktop;Ubuntu 10.04 and VLC player so I think files has no problem. Dell inspiron 1210 specification; Intel Atom Z530, GMA500, 1GB Ram. GMA500 driver has installed.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: MP4 Files - Video Nearly Unwatchable ?

Nov 27, 2010

I'm running it in a virtual machine right now, because when I tried to dual boot my computer, it broke my hard drive.

I'm having a problem playing .mp4 files though. My phone only takes videos in this file format, and most of the time I'm working with large amounts of files, so converting them isn't an option. I've tried many different players, and they all lag like crazy, making the video nearly unwatchable. This is a huge flaw for me, and one reason I'm not bothering to try dual booting again...

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Ushare Not Seeing HD Mkv Video Files?

Dec 31, 2010

I have a Samsung BD-6800 blu-ray player that i want to stream HD mkv files to from my pc. I made sure DLNA was enabled in the /etc/ushare.conf file. The blu-ray player sees my pc perfectly and i can navigate to the folders where the videos are stored, however when i select a folder with videos in it all that is shown is an option called "upper folder" which takes me back to the root directory. The videos are nowhere to be found. I checked on the Ushare web site to see if mkv files are supported which they are.

Here is what my /etc/ushare.conf looks like.

Code:
# /etc/ushare.conf
# Edit this file with 'dpkg-reconfigure ushare'
# Configuration file for uShare
# uShare UPnP Friendly Name (default is 'uShare').

[Code].....
