Ubuntu Multimedia :: MacPro1.1 Realtek ALC889A - Support Exist For The MacPro1,1's Front Headphone Port Yet?
Jul 12, 2011
Does support exist for the MacPro1,1's front headphone port yet? Strangely I cannot get either of the rear analog audio ports to work either. I have tried setting
options snd-hda-intel model=imac24
options snd-hda-intel model=macpro
options snd-hda-intel model=auto
and totally removing the line of the alsa-base.conf file. I restarted after each of these tests. Only the imac24 option does anything, activating the front speaker, but none of the 1/8" analog ports work then. I run Ubuntu exclusively on this box, so I would really love to get some sort of output other than the internal speaker working. Ideally this would be the front headphones jack, but I am not too picky.

i just installed the latest opensuse version on my asus eee pc 1001px which has realtek alc269 sound card. The problem is that there is no sound coming from headphones when plugged in.. I had the same problem in ubuntu 10.04 and i solved it editing the alsa.conf and adding a line.. i didn't manage to find any solution for opensuse though.

After installing ubuntu 10.10 on my toshiba satellite L655D-S5050 I noticed the headphone port does not work, I've tried a number ways to get it working but they have all proved fruitless, also my built-in microphone does not work.

I have installed Slackware 13.1 in a ASUS Eee PC 1001PX.
Slackware detect the sound card as a HDA Intel Chip: Realtek ALC259.
The laptop has just one connector that can work either as mic-in/headphones-out.
The problem is that I don't know how to tell Slackware which device I connected (mic or headphones). If I don't connect anything the speakers work but if I connect my headphones I don't get any sound at all.

been using squeeze on my primary system for some time, I decided to install it on my media center PC.After doing a clean install I lost sound and my maximum video resolution dropped to 1280x1024 (another post). This system has the same MB as my primary system, i.e. same sound chip. I have no issues with sound on that box. So it's a mystery to me why I don't have any sound on this one. As you can see, the sound modules are loading correctly:
# lsmod | grep snd
snd_hda_codec_realtek 162603 1
snd_hda_intel 16541 0
[code]....

I have a GA-MA785GMT-UD2H with ALC889A audio. I hooked up the optical cable and now only get sound from amarok. I don't get any sound from firefox or vlc. I looked at other posts but all refer to ubuntu and pulseaudio. I want to be able to use the optical out for all audio i.e firefox(flash) and vlc.

I cannot get sound out of the headphone port on a laptop. Headphones are plugged in, and sound comes out of the internal speakers. Windows behaves normally (sound switches to headphones when headphones are inserted).
It did work in Linux at one point, but something changed, we're just not sure what. Rebooting doesn't fix. This appears to occur whether or not PulseAudio is running. code...
This works in Windows: You plug headphones in, the internal speakers stop making noise, and noise comes out the head phones. Windows says I only have two sound cards: the HDMI port (which I don't care about) and the "sound card", which it claims is a "Conexant Pebble High Definition SmartAudio" In Windows, both the internal speakers and the headphone jack show up as one soundcard, which in my experience, is typical. (This is a laptop)

Is there any way to get the headphone port below the cd tray to work as audio-output? It has a headphone symbol on it, but it doesn't give any sound.

I am currently considering upgrading my system to

with
[URL]
and I have done some research on the Realtek ALC892 chip and I am unsure if it will work. I am currently running Linux Mint 10.
I see that Realtek offers a driver but I have not found anybody who had success or if it was built into the Kernel.

I spent over an hour today and over an hour last night googling and trying everything and so far no success. I found many threads with oddly similar complaints, but their solutions haven't worked for me.Last week I upgraded my system, basically a complete overhaul (in the old case). The new system is based on an ASUS MB which comes with VIA VT1708B audio onboard. I installed the latest 32-bit Linux Mint on it. The case's front audio jack doesn't work, the rear audio works but is too quiet.
Things I have tried that have not worked:Different combinations of settings in the basic sound preferences dialog, the GNOME ALSA mixer, and the PulseAudio volume control (I've probably played around with these so much that I've tried every combination)

I have an htpc running mythbuntu 10.04 connected to a plasma tv via hdmi. Initially i was able to boot fine and the front end loaded ok but the resolution was off. My display is 1024x768 but my only options in myth was to use 1024x720. I have since enabled the proprietary ATI video driver. Now my desktop dispay perfect on the tv. However, i can no longer start the mythtv front end. I also ran an update that updated over 100 packages.

Basically as the title suggests. I'm a linux noob, I've spent a few hour's looking around, but all I seem to be finding is people with problems of no sound, and so I dont know if the solution would be the same.
I have perfect sound from the rear speakers, the front centre, and the sub, but the front left and right are completely silent.
Things I think anyone may need to know
Mobo - GA-880GM-UD2H
Onboard sound - SBx00 Azalia Intel HDA
Ubuntu 10.10 x64

I have strange problem that I couldn't even find on google.
When I play any video in VLC or any other player my video is on top of everything.
For example, if I open a video and play it - everything looks ok. But, if I open another window "above" VLC, video suddenly appears at top and I can't see window opened in front of VLC.
This print-screen will make it more clear.

I run Ubuntu 10.10 on my Intel DG965RY. My front audio ports don't work in Ubuntu, the rear one does. I never got it working earlier when I had Ubuntu 10.04 but this time I am going to try it again. My codec is SigmaTel STAC9227
My ALSA information is here.
Handy details:
!!ALSA Version
!!------------
Driver version: 1.0.23
Library version: 1.0.23
Utilities version: 1.0.23
[Code].....
I know something that I will have to change the model of my module to make the front audio jack works but I couldn't find a model related line in my ALSA configuration file - /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf (I was able to get to that point in Ubuntu 10.04, may be something has changed).

After a recent hardware upgrade, I'm no longer able to use the front panel audio ports on my Antec P180 case. They worked fine before with my old ASUS motherboard, but with my new MSI 870-G45 motherboard I can't get them to work for some reason.
I checked out this thread, [URL] but didn't see much in the way of problems/solutions with front panel audio ports, but it's a lengthy thread so maybe I missed it.

I recently bought an HP Pavilion Elite HPE-570t. Except for the fact that I can't get the back speaker jack to work, Maverick works great. Here's info that seems relevant:
aplay -l
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: HDA Generic [HDA Generic]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
[Code]....
I've look at Alsa Mixer. There are two tabs (IDT ID 76c7 and ATI R6xx HDMI). I turned the second one off, since I don't have any HDMI sound output device connected to the computer. On the other tab, there are five sliders (Master, PCM, Front Mi, Line and Mic). They are all turned on, and the first two are at maximum volume.
It seems to me that Ubuntu is not recognizing whatever controls the rear speaker jack.

now half of the speakers plug is stuck in the back of my PC. cant get it out, because it's very deep. i decided to use the front jack for sound but it wont work.already tried alsa mixer and upgraded my kernel.i think the problem is that i need to somehow kill the jack in the back of PC because its still alive and sending signals to that half-dead jack

I'm using a Realtek alc888 sound chipset (integrated on GA-P965-DS3 mobo) which is capable of 8-channel output (front, side, rear, center/sub). The front-out jack on my mobo is disfunctional and thus can't be used (aweful distortions and such dueo faulty connection), thus it needs to be reassigned to another jack, but simulating a 'front-out' jack. I was able to do this in windows using the Realtek HD Audio application that comes with the drivers (reassigning jacks) and need to do something similar in ubuntu.I've searched through a lot of ALSA documentation, tried to take examples of switching channels using asound.conf and modify them to my needs, but nothing has come of it. As such I've resorted to asking here.Another less important issue is doing something similar but duplicating front-out and mapping it onto the side-out jack, for headphones.

since updating my laptop to 10.04, I can't get any sound out of my headphones. If I plug the jack in, the sound from the loudspeakers turns off, but the headphones stay quiet.
I have run alsamixer and in fact the volume for the headphones is stuck to zero, and it's not possible to increase it.
My hardware config is posted here: [URL]
What I find funny, is that amixer reports that I don't have the capability of regulating the headphone volume:
Simple mixer control 'Headphone',0
Capabilities: pswitch penum
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
Mono:
Front Left: Playback [on]
Front Right: Playback [on]
I have also used the AlsaUpgrade script to get the latest version of alsa, but it still doesn't work.

I have a Dell Vostro 320 running Ubuntu 10.10. I can get sound through the onboard speakers but when I plug headphones into the jack, the onboard speakers mute (correct behaviour), but no sound comes from the headphones (incorrect behaviour). The headphones do work with other sound sources.I have made sure all the alsa drivers are up to date and correct and the system is seeing the sound card OK according to aplay -l:
The alsamixer run from the command line or Gnome shows "Master", "PCM", "Beep" and "Capture" all normal with nothing muted. The alsa-base.conf file has the following as the last line as per various posts that seem to have a fix for this problem:options snd-hda-intel model=dell-vostro position_fix=0 enable=yes.

I've been getting the hang of ubuntu. It's been a good switch from windows 7.
I'm having a bit of an issue which right now is causing me to regret deleting my windows partition. It'd be nice to have my dual boot set up right now.
Ubuntu is not recognizing my headphone output on my laptop.
I've been looking around but can't find a fix. Here's my alsa info script output.
Also, I'm running 64-bit ubuntu if that matters.
