Getting sound out of the back ports just fine. Using an ASUS P5N73-AM motherboard and a fresh install of 10.04. Everything else works perfectly except the blasted front panel headphone port.
View 5 RepliesAfter a recent hardware upgrade, I'm no longer able to use the front panel audio ports on my Antec P180 case. They worked fine before with my old ASUS motherboard, but with my new MSI 870-G45 motherboard I can't get them to work for some reason.
I checked out this thread, [URL] but didn't see much in the way of problems/solutions with front panel audio ports, but it's a lengthy thread so maybe I missed it.
I have openSUSE 11.4 KDE version (64-bit) on a desktop PC. My sound card is ASUS Xonar DX 7.1 (PCI-E). I am brand-new to the Linux experience. I get audio out to my speakers which are connected to the jacks of the rear I/O panel of my PC. I do not however get audio out to my headphones which are connected to the jack in the front panel. I know that the headphones work fine because they do so when I boot up in Windows XP. Here is what I discovered so far: KMix does not show that I have a front panel audio channel. But when I run AlsaMixer it does show that I have such channel and, upon manually turning the volume on, I do have sound out to the headphones.
Therefore, I deduct that I have some sort of configuration problem with KMix and would like to fix it as I prefer to use the GUI interface instead of the AlsaMixer one. It's just a matter of preference! I would like to troubleshoot things using the Audio Troubleshooting guide (SDB:Audio troubleshooting - openSUSE) but I notice that openSUSE's version 11.4 is not mentioned in it. Should I follow the instructions for version 11.3 or wait for an updated guide?
I run Ubuntu 10.10 on my Intel DG965RY. My front audio ports don't work in Ubuntu, the rear one does. I never got it working earlier when I had Ubuntu 10.04 but this time I am going to try it again. My codec is SigmaTel STAC9227

I know something that I will have to change the model of my module to make the front audio jack works but I couldn't find a model related line in my ALSA configuration file - /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf (I was able to get to that point in Ubuntu 10.04, may be something has changed).

I found many threads with oddly similar complaints, but their solutions haven't worked for me.Last week I upgraded my system, basically a complete overhaul (in the old case). The new system is based on an ASUS MB which comes with VIA VT1708B audio onboard. I installed the latest 32-bit Linux Mint on it. The case's front audio jack doesn't work, the rear audio works but is too quiet.
Things I have tried that have not worked:Different combinations of settings in the basic sound preferences dialog, the GNOME ALSA mixer, and the PulseAudio volume control (I've probably played around with these so much that I've tried every combination)
We tried to burn an audio cd with the default burner in Ubuntu, but we can only play the cd on the computer. I was not in front of the computer, another user was, but I think they used Audio CD Extractor )

I tried for weeks to get it to work, but eventually I just pulled a cheap Dynex DX-SC51 card from another machine and turns out it works, but now I can't use the inputs and headphone jack on the front of the case without going into system>preferences>sound and changing "output" back to "internal analog audio stereo"
Is there any way to activate these two audio devices at the same time?
I lost front audio after alsa upgrade to 1.0.23 headphone and mic doesn't work anymore . Anybody out there who can help a newbee.

I just installed 10.10) i had speaker audio on my laptop but the front jacks for head phones didn't work. After fidiling with some config files, i forget which config thing it is in but there was numerous mentions about where you had to put "options I am already added to the audio group for my computer and running vlc as root does not work (vlc-wrapper) regular won't run as root, i tried that because i have fixed other hardware problems by running programs as root. The laptop is a HP Pavillion dv5-1000 and has a regular sound card and a hdmi port (the sound is configured to play out of the non hdmi one)

The sound card works just fine when I plug my headphones into the analog stereo output in the back. I'm not trying to do anything fancy with it right now like digital optical out or anything, just trying to get the one analog output on the front panel to work so I can plug my headphones in up front and leave the speakers plugged in the back.

I am using F14 Laughlin on my laptop HP Compaq6715b AMD turion 64x2. Installation went fine, only problem is with printer LQ680 24pin series. It is not a real problem that printer want print, it just want print 10 or 15 or 20 pages from tractor bin. I get message: '/usr/lib/cups/filter/rastertoepson failed. It stopped printing after every page, send message, I have to cancel error message, then I can print again. All this is happened if I try to print one by one page from front of printer, I just have to print page with command <ctrl>P.

My problem is that though I am getting sound from my rear audio jack which is working perfectly, my front audio jack is not working at all. I am not getting any sound from it.... When in windows to disable front audio panel detection to get it warking. So I think there might be a similar workaround here... but that's just a guess. i am using a Gigabyte- GA31 MES2L motherboard which uses Realtek Audio Drivers.

speaker-test -D surround51 -c6 -twav I only get output from Center, Rear Left, Rear Right and LFE - i.e. the front channel is missing. I'm not sure if there are any ALSA configuration files left lying around from my old sound card (Intel HDA audio) and I've forgotton what they might be called or where they would be.
Can someone tell me the locations of the various ALSA configuration files? Or is this a known thing about the Forte? (Maybe the card has the front two channels wired differently or something) Or maybe there's a configuration option I've missed.
I just installed ubuntu on top of my windows xp on my laptop. I've got all the files I need to play mp3's i think. I'm using rhythmbox music player and the track play but I get no sound. Is there a better mp3 player out there?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am on Ubuntu 10.10 (upgraded from 10.04). And I can't get the audio to work, (it wasn't working on 10.04 either) I tried all the different settings in "Sound Preferences".
I tried running ALSA Upgrade Script, it downloaded (sudo bash AlsaUpgrade-1.0.23-2.sh -d) but when I tried to compile (sudo bash AlsaUpgrade-1.0.23-2.sh -c) it said

I'm having a frustrating problem with a .sh script. It's a fairly simple script to get a volume readout in Conky. I refer to the .sh file in my Conky file as such;

It seems to be talking about; if [ $mute == "[on]" ] What else would it be expecting and why does it work using Front & Surround but nothing else? I've attached a pic. The volume script I'm trying to get working is just under the clock. I'd really love to get the Master volume working on this.
with windows and sony vegas 9 i am used to often rendering with compressed hd avi and uncompressed audio, as this gets mangled far less by videos's compression policy if you have music in your videos, in my case home-made with acoustic guitar. with my two current installations of ubuntu 10.04 on a laptop and pc no output format i've tried lets the raw audio option work, which is the only option that looks like it would keep my wav files as they are. the rendered video is silent, with totem displaying the icon for muted sound when the film is played. unmuting doesn't correct this.
is this a bug or are there other codecs to add for this? aiff would be fine even i think. i wondered if changing the bit rate of aac from the 256000 i currently have entered (rather than the default 128000) to the bit rate of uncompressed audio might force what i need, kind of like ms's newer lossless wma.
i installed the restricted extras packages. there is quite a list in the pitivi options including a lot of ffmpeg stuff. i don't know if additionally vlc's codecs are added or anything like that.
I still can't get normalize-audio in K3B to work. I do use MP3GAIN but I would to use K3B again. I had it working at one time and then after an upgrade of which I don't remember it no longer works. I have no problem with anything else in K3B. I hope someone has got it working.

With Nanokey there are no problems. Audio 2 Dj does not work normally, Omni Control at all has no driver in Ubuntu, if I have correctly understood.
For example, any application (for example a player) starts an audiostream. The sound is only the first some seconds. After that it turns to short series of clicks. Clicks chaotically appear and for lack of any prospective audiostreams. Thus built in sound card works normally.
As an arranger of collegiate a cappella music, I often times need to listen to a song as I'm playing with a midi sequencer or some arranging software. On Ubuntu, since Gutsy, I've often run into the same problem from distribution to distribution:
Midi and audio won't work at the same time. If I have an audio file open on VLC or FireFox, I can't play Midi sequences on my arrangement. If I'm arranging and listening to Midi notes, I can't play music. Note that it's incredibly inconvenient to constantly close one so I can play the other to finish arrangements.

And my issue is that I've never built from source or package or anything. sudo apt-get install and adding to the sources.list file is the experience I have. So, if I need to do source building, I'll need guidance.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an intel HDA chipset that desperately wants to work. I have it plugged into my receiver and sound only occassionally works. I say occassionally because I will hear some sound, then my receiver will flash hdmi, as if it is switching to the new stream, I hear silence. Then shortly later, the receiver will provide sound, then again it will 'switch' and i hear silence. To work around this, I had an optical line working and somehow had alsa using ONLY that for the audio (bypassing the HDMI completely). Then one day when I was trying to the audio fixed for some specific application, I broke it! I cannot figure for the life of me how to make alsa ONLY use my optical line. Of course any suggestions on how to get the hdmi to work is even better.

* When I run gstreamer-properties and do an output test I get a test sound through the headphones plugged into the front audio socket of the machine using the 'Analogue Headphones' setting in Sound Preferences. (This rules out dead headphones.)
* When I try to play audio through any app I get no sound through the headphones, but if I change the setting to 'Analogue Output' in Sound Preferences I get audio loud and clear through the speakers which are plugged into the audio socket at the rear of the machine. how the gstreamer-properties test is getting audio to the front socket I guess I'd be getting somewhere.
