Whenever I open a folder using the gnome panel (places,) Nautilus runs and the window looks like it was designed when the first GUI was. It's all grey and doesn't match the rest of the GUI at all.However, when I gksudo nautilus in Terminal, the window that opens looks perfectly fine and how it should look.Also, the messed up nautilus does not have a bar with File, edit, and the other options.

All 3D Games under wine run at a very low fps even with the lowest graphics settings, this includes starcraft 2, league of legends, css, etc. using the latest ATi driver and 11.2 and the "tested" additional drivers ubuntu auto installs and yes i followed all the guides to improve performance under wine in all my games and all the custom patchs
Even native games such as Trine, cop lag spikes, and choppyness
Now this does not happen under windows, so i know my card and computer are healthy as can be, there new parts. in windows, in the same games, i get up to 200 fps +
The only conclusion i can come to is an incompatability with ubuntu and the latest ati drivers but i cant find anyone who can confirm this or that has a similiar setup and the same problems
I also see people with better or lower ati cards, some with the same, running these exact games in linux on high graphics with no lag
Now, abit of a turn around is, Trine and native games ran smooth as can be in Fedora 14, i cant remember what drivers i used, i followed there yum guide, but it ran extremely well and with no glitching in the exact same spots were i would glitch heavily in ubuntu
Tho i was unable to test wine games because i couldnt figure out how to compile wine in fedora with a patch i need to run my specific games, in ubuntu it was easy using sudo and apt-get
the only response i got from the ubuntu forums was "get an nvidia card"
I realise wine isnt perfect, but, fact is. other people have these games running fine on similiar cards and setups I dont know if there using different drivers.
Hydrogen, the drum machine for Linux, worked 100% great in Jaunty. I upgraded to Karmic and bam, sound is crackling and laggy.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've borrowed a netbook from my girlfriend and she's let me put ubuntu on it so I can do some computing work, I installed 11.04 on it but it was a little slow so I tried 10.04. It looks great, I like it a lot, however it seems to be running a little choppy. The computer switches on and loads up in under a minute, and applications open up in a few seconds, however scrolling (particularly in browsers) is very glitchy looking, as is minimising and opening windows, nothing seems to be running smoothly.
A little info for you: using an ASUS eePC 1101HA, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD, running Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx Netbook Edition (However I prefer GNOME and removed the netbook launcher), I'm a Mac user but I use the Terminal a lot so I'm fairly confident with basic commands.
I have not been able to install a linux distro since 9.04. Karmic and lynx both freeze on install. (screen gets glitchy) I am a total noob when it comes to anything beyond installing.

I *cannot* unmount the drive. The computer does not seem to be able to find the mount point to take it off from. When I unmount from Nautilus, it says:

Is my PSPgo becoming corrupt or something? That would be supremely unpleasant. I'd definitely like to avoid that, if at all possible.
I hear Pulse Audio is the culprit of all the sound issues. I would like to remove it, and default to straight ALSA or whatever distros like Fedora and Ubuntu use, which has never been problematic for me.
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhenever I move files from a USB memory stick or external hard drive or any other such device the file only seems to transfer 99% of the data and often during moving file operations will freeze and an offer of 'force quit' will come up (although file operations will eventually vanish with the 99% of the file being moved).
Can anything be done to rectify problems with file operations?

Awhile back I was playing around with Plymouth and GDM resolutions. I followed some wrong instructions and screwed up my GDM. I have fixed my GDM, sorta, but at times it will not start or when it does the login screen has strange pixel errors.
Sometimes it starts fine without any problems or pixel errors. Other times I have to boot 2 to 3 times before GDM will start.
If GDM starts with pixel errors, I can still login to Ubuntu and the rest of the OS runs fine. Pixel errors only happen in GDM.
When GDM fails to start I get a blank black screen. Cannot enter command line. OS seems frozen and I have to reboot.
Edit: solution is installing older version = "aptitude install autoconf2.13"

Here is a description of my problem:I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop with the default Ambiance theme. I have my bottom panel deleted and instead use Docky.Sometimes on boot/reboot one of a few things happens.Either:1)My Ambiance theme loads, then...unloads?My top panel and all Nautilus windows turn to a flat gray "theme" as if I guess there are no appearance settings enabled. If I open appearance settings my panel returns to theme without doing anything else, but my Nautilus windows are still out of theme.2)My Docky bar never loads up and I have to start it manually, it then loads/works fine as if nothing is wrong.3)Both problems 1 & 2 combined.
My setup is Ubuntu 10.04 64bit running on an Athlon x2 3.0GHz with 8gig of DDR2 dual channel RAM and a Geforce 9800GTX+ video card. I had the latest factory NVidia driver installed and figured that might be causing the problem. I switched an older release of the NVidia driver last night to see if that fixes anything, but being an intermittent problem only a few days use will tell. I would not use the NVidia drivers at all, but I figured I would not be able to use Docky as it requires compositing to be enabled (which I was under the assumption were under the special effects that I need the NVidia driver for).
I bought a new Samsung R530 laptop, which is a 64bit, a few months ago and have been struggling to get the thing working properly since.I removed W7 and install Ubuntu 10.4, which I found was freezing periodically for five to ten minutes, then I installed 10.10 beta, finding that this too kept 'sticking'.I had hoped that the full release would have fixed the issues, but this too was slow, the mouse froze constantly and any video I played would freeze up with sound playing normally in the background.I have followed some of the threads here and none of these things have worked for me.
On my HP netbook, my old Acer laptop and my PC, everything works fine!!!I have since installed an older copy of Ubuntu 9.10 and this seems to be working fine. No 'sticking' mouse, no system locks.Its fast and smooth, just what I have come to love about linux.What has happened to the new versions of Ubuntu?
Can you recommend an MS exchange client that works reasonably well? Evolution freezes all the time when syncing folders and has many other problems

View 2 Replies View RelatedI don't mean this to be in any way a critical post but I've recently switched to Debian from numerious other distros because of it elidged stability and speed. However I'm using the stable version and frequently have to reboot for certain things to work and frequently multimedia based programs crash on me. I've installed the repo from debian-multimedia.org so I don't know if that's causeing any problems. It crashes on me multiple times a day. Now it's not the OS itself which is the problem I'm sure but more the software in the repos. However it was my udnerstanding that this software was pretty darn well tested.

1) VLC is set to deactivate the screen saver during playback, but the screen saver activates anyway.
2) Sometimes, when NOT running VLC, the screen saver doesn't activate itself at all. I've set it to 5 minutes, but after 5 minutes of inactivity, nothing happens. This ALWAYS occurs while running a java web applet, and SOMETIMES also occurs when no software is running at all.
I've googled this to death, but can't find any information relevant to this problem.
I was upgraded to Adobe Flash 10.2 automatically via the updater. But it's been VERY, very buggy whereas 10.1 (or whatever came before it) was very stable. How do I switch back?

Not only is the application missing in the KDE-Menu after installation (had to add it manually) but it is crashing frequently. Whenever one adds new text in a Textbox (which will NOT be formated with the specified default font but the first in the list) and then immediately changes the font without first leaving the input-focus of that box: Segfault / signal 11. I understand that there is a RC2 out by now and the specific error seems to be fixed by that.
Now my question is: After having decided to ship sUSE 11.4 with a RC: Will further RCs and maybe the final release of scribus be shipped by the OpenSuse Update? Or does the user have to manually install a working version of that software?
in 11.4 the texi2dvi version is 1.135, based on texinfo version 4.13. Now these are old buggy versions (see e.g. texi2dvi: locale-dependent error in egrep [A-z] ), causing that documentation can not be built, for example when building gcc. Now one would hope that Suse provides updates (the latest version of texinfo is 4.9), but I can't find them?
It seems to me that the installation of texinfo is a bit more complicated, because of the integration with your system, so I hesitate to install texinfo myself. Yast should have a bug-reporting facility, where one could easily report such issues. Hope somebody can help (we have to install various pieces of software, which call texi2dvi, which then breaks, making the whole build breaks, and it would be not easy to change the build of these
I have a buggy install, 11.2 and I need to be root to look around/change/fix I'm tired of being asked twice for a security code for any change/tweak/install/config when im trying to fix the issue. Which of your multiple applications do I use to make myself root? Yast doesn't seem to be doing the trick. I have eth config issues, grub issues, application update issues, security config issues, right now i just want security login issues to be fixed so im not asked a thousand times for my admin rights.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am experiencing real buggyness in firefox 3.6.3. Sometimes when I click on any button e.g. this form (submit new thread), I get no response whatsoever. It lacks that responsive feel. Might I mention that it happened some of the time. Its probably not because of the ISP because I didn't have any problem before when I was using Vista. Maybe it was because I meddled with things like this and tweaking some stuff in the about:config. I'm out of ideas.

Just updated, downloads and install complete. I closed laptop. Fan kept running. I rebooted. Black screen. Rebooted again. Screen resolution messed up (800x600 or whatever). Changed resolution in System/Prefs. Better, but the look is not the same as before update. The Gnome fonts and icons are too small, but the resolution is same as before update! My machine has been acting buggy lately...colored text in IceWeasel browser search field, where normally black. I have Firestarter running. How to tell if machine is hacked? I just logged out/in and all normal now. I still think the machine is acting weird.

i am installing the software vlc-1.1.5.tar.bz2 on my red hat linux 5.0 after extracting & by firing the command ./configure on command prompt it shows following error & after configure the make & install command is not working
configure: error: Buggy GNU/libc (version 2.5 - 2.7) present. VLC would crash; there is no viable work-around for this. Check with your distribution vendor on how to update the glibc run-time. Alternatively, build with --disable-nls --disable-mozilla and be sure to not use LibVLC from other applications/wrappers.
I'm a long time user of CentOS 5 w/KDE 3.5. I have always had this problem to various degrees no matter what installation of CentOS 5 I'm currently on. This same hardware does not exhibit the same symptoms with another OS.The problem is I regularly have many konsole instances open. I alt-tab between them frequently. Inevitably a random alt-tab will freeze the keyboard and the mouse won't be able to click anything although I can move the mouse cursor around. I can't type anything. It seems to have some sort of timeout and it always come back to responsiveness.
I alleviated this problem (I think) by switching keyboards, installing the nvidia driver instead of the nv driver, shutting down all non-essential services.I have seen these symptoms on every system I have installed CentOS 5 where KDE 3.5 was also installed. Very different hardware setups each time.Has anyone else run into similar symptoms?I'm surprised that it's just CentOS 5 w/KDE 3.5 that exhibits this behaviour on the same hardware where other operating systems (gentoo, suse, etc.) did not exhibit these symptoms.
Is it possible to change my current nautilus window to have sudo capabilities,? e.g. to delete locked files. It may be lazy but if it takes a lot of navigation then it would be handy to somehow activate sudo from the open window without the terminal command (gksudo nautilus) which always begins at root.

But whatever image I try (some PNG or even SVG files) I can't get them to be displayed. It seems there is a very special format, size, type to match the Gnome/GTK+/Nautilus icon requirements...
Does anyone know how I can move the location bar in nautilus up by the toolbar, as shown by this pic:

By the way, a guy on Ubuntu Forums thought this was a mockup. It's not. It's the regular version of Nautilus, only I removed some toolbar buttons through the /usr/share/nautilus/ui xml files.
I just want the location bar next to the toolbar to conserve screen space, and be a bit more like Finder.
