Ubuntu Installation :: Install Freeze On Splash Screen?

Jul 8, 2010

I have failed to install kUbuntu for a several days already, so I am currently on SuSE (hate it, love ubuntu...). I don't know what is wrong with my PC, but something ain't right. I tried:1st: Installing kUbuntu x64 - Result: Freeze on loading screen (I think..don't even remember anymore ).2nd: Running Live CD ("Try Kubuntu") - Freeze on splash screen, at the Hard Disc icon (can't get past that one).3rd: Installing Ubuntu x64 with Unetbootin - (GNOME variant). - I get a nice graphic card error, can't unerstand anything - screen messed up.4th: Installing Ubuntu x86 with Unetbootin (GNOME) - same as 3rd time.5th: Decided that maybe something was wrong with the download. Downloaded kUbuntu via torrent. Installed with Unetbootin in a flash - no change.6th: Installed SuSE7th: Downloaded kUbuntu x86, burnt, tried installing, back to 1st step.Is this an infinite loop ?Hardware specs:

250GB x 2 Seagate Barracuda ( I had them connected in a RAID0 via bios previously(Windows 7), had trouble installing suse because of this, but I deleted RAID information and disabled raid in BIOS setup )GeForce 9800 GX2Quad 2 Core 2.664 GB unbuffered ram ( 4 x 1 GB)

Ubuntu Installation :: Distros Fail To Install Or Boot / Freeze And Permanent Black Screen?

May 11, 2011

I tried out many distros on my desktop before experimenting with my oshiba Satellite A665 laptop with integrated intel graphics. Everything worked out as normal until I was testing Ubuntu on a live cd, I clicked install and it sent me back to the login screen before I had made an account. So I then chose to restart and it started glitching so I had to manually power off. Ever since then whichever distros I try to install, they face numerous errors. On Ubuntu and Peppermint they freeze on the 5 dots installation part and Linux Mint just has a permanent black screen. Even the current Peppermint OS (only distro i have)hangs on the 5 dots when trying to boot onto the computer. This has resulted me in a computer that cant do anything, i've tried the noquiet and nosplash options but they don't seem to work. I was thinking of installing Windows and maybe erasing the disk by installing another distro later?

Ubuntu :: 10.04 - Lucid Lynx - Random Freeze - Hang-up

May 10, 2010

It seems that my Ubuntu 10.04 (clean install) to randomly freeze / hang (mouse/keyboard unresponsive, only a hard reboot is available as option) but with no garbled screens/windows/etc. There's no pattern why or any application that could be responsible. It could happen ten minutes after it is started or after 2 days but at some point and suddenly the system will become totally unresponsive, freeze and hang up. I used the same PC with Karmic Koala and releases before that (sometimes on for days) with no such problem so it shouldn't be a hardware problem.

I thoroughly check system logs after the hard reboot (System > Administation > Log File Viewer) and there's no entry around the time of each freeze / hang to pinpoint me to something.

The only thing that is certain is that the following errors / warnings always appear in .xsession-errors file:

Here is also some info about my system:
M/B: ASUS P4R800-V DELUXE
CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz
RAM: 1GB
Graphics: ATI Radeon 9100 IGP

Ubuntu Installation :: Freeze Screen After Reboot And Get Past The Splash Screen?

May 12, 2011

When I install Ubuntu 11.04 with Wubi, I get this freeze screen after I reboot and get past the Ubuntu splash screen: url

As you can see, it's a scrambled picture of my Windows desktop. This happens with every other version of Ubuntu also.

I'm running a 64-bit PC and I don't wanna waste another CD or use a USB to install, because I actually progress further in my efforts whenever I use Wubi.

Ubuntu Installation :: Freeze/Blank Screen After Screen Off 11.04?

May 4, 2011

I've been running Ubuntu 10.10 very smoothly for a while now. Decided to upgrade to 11.04 - managed to corrupt the hard disk the first time by letting the laptop hibernate part of the way through but reinstalled from a live CD of 11.04 and it's now working except for this issue.

If I shut the screen on my laptop (or press the screen off button) either the screen won't come back on or it will but frozen (I can move the mouse but not click on anything etc.) In this state music continues to play (from spotify under wine) and if I press my hibernate shortcut (power button) the computer hibernates, only to wake into the same situation. I've got a Dell Latitude D520, upgraded to a bigger hard disk and more ram - the ubuntu partition has 50gb. Windows is working fine.

Edit: I noticed a sticky thread which includes something about a blank screen but I think this is a different issue?

Ubuntu Installation :: Intel D101GGC Lucid Lynx 10.04 Blank Screen?

Jun 14, 2010

I've downloaded 10.04 desktop (twice) and server (once). The server install will boot fine, but the desktop install goes to a blank screen (and the monitor goes to sleep) after leaving the Live CD menu (Run from CD, Install, Check Files, Boot 1st HD, etc.).My first try at downloading the desktop CD was using BitTorrent, and appeared to go OK. Burned the .iso image, booted, and when I got the blank screen I suspected the Intel D101GGC motherboard using the Radeon Xpress 200 chipset had problemsI tried adding boot options (F6) such as vga=711 and xforcevesa and text. No joyOthers seemed to have gotten a successful install so I turned may attention to the CD, suspecting it was a bad download/burn, and downloaded 10.04 desktop again from mirror.pnl.gov/releases/. The two .iso images compared equal, so I used a different CD burner, with different media and got CDs which compare identical. Both CDs fail. Then I downloaded the server CD from PNL and it ran! I could select the "test CD" function, which ran in a text mode and said the server CD was OK. I started the install, and it went OK.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Boot In 9.10 Login Screen Freeze?

Mar 9, 2010

I have a dual boot configuration (WinXp and Ubuntu 9.10) on a PC (my video card is an ATI Radeon 4850), i have been configuring ubuntu for the past 5 days and everything was working fine. Today i installed Screenlets (through synaptic manager), and i was adding a screenlet when the screen froze. I could move the cursor, but couldn't click anything. I left it for about 5 minutes to see if anything changes, and since it was still frozen, i did a hard reset (restart from the button).

In the grub menu i chose the normal linux boot (not the recovery mode), it loads up the welcome splash screen (with the tribal sound and the bar moving), and then the little circle cursor appears, turns into the normal arrow cursor and it hangs. I can move the cursor, but the screen is stuck with the ubuntu splash screen.I restarted (again from the button) and went into recovery mode, but in the recovery console i can't select any option from the keyboard (i tried hitting the cursor keys, enter, nothing happens). I hit ctrl+alt+delete and it restarted the system (so the keyborad does function). In XP i found a recommendation to restart the Xserver, so i rebooted in the Ubuntu splash screen, hit ctrl+alt+F2, logged in, typed the command i found:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorgrestarted (sudo reboot), and got to the splash screen, which after playing the tribal sounds, turned semi-transparent (i could see the desktop wallpaper, taskbars and a black rectangle where my cairo-dock should appear), but again it freezed, no cursor. I hit ctrl+alt+F2 to go into console mode, and uninstalled screenlets (since it was the last thing i installed before the initial freeze).Screenlets uninstalled properly (i used sudo apt-get remove screenlets) so i rebooted, but it still freezes at the ubuntu screen splash (this time it wasn't transparent, just the standard screen splash). So i tried getting into console mode again, but this time my screen displays lines in a lot of colors, randomly (probably a failure from the video adapter)

Ubuntu Installation :: Login Screen Freeze - Mouse Still Moves But Can't Do Anything

Mar 23, 2010

Little background info: I have a computer where the hdd crashed. Bought a new hdd tonight and installed it. As the computer had no operating system at this point I put in a copy of the live cd and begin to install Ubuntu 9.10(32 bit)...everything went smooth with the install (at least I think). My problem is that when I get to the login screen, I click on my user name to type in my password but as soon as I click on either my user name or guest it basically freezes...Mouse still moves but can't do anything with login or the options on the bottom right of the screen...

Right when it freezes the pixels under the login box mess up, looks like some type of graphics problem?? I'm not sure, but I can't be the first person with this problem Also after it "freezes" I can't utilize the ctl+alt+f1 command either

Ubuntu Installation :: Get To A Black Screen With Five Dots Below The Wording / Freeze?

Dec 23, 2010

I recently received a HP Pavilion dv9000 that the previous owner swore had some issues with it. I'm not so sure it had issues, but that's another story. Anyways, I downloaded Unbuntu 10.10 and burned it to a disk. The first time I booted up the machine I told it I wanted to try Ubuntu. I then left the machine and came back in 20min or so and it looked like it had successfully booted. However I quickly realized the screen was frozen. So I turned off the machine and decided I'd try again a few days later. Today I booted up the machine and I get to a black screen with Ubuntu on it with five dots below the wording. It freezes on this screen. I've rebooted several times but I keep getting to the same screen before it freezes.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Run Install CD - Installing 10.04 - Lucid Lynx

May 23, 2010

Decided to try out Ubuntu instead of automatically getting the next Windows OS.

I have a Dell Dimension E310 with on board video card (will be relevant soon, I think).

After trying making my own CD and not being able to at least run the LiveCD (thought it was my fault even thought the MD5 #'s matched correctly), I went to Shipit and got a CD delivered of Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid). When I put the CD into my computer while running windows, the CD is not recognized, which seems strange to me. When I put the same CD into my work laptop (note that both computers are running XP), I can see the contents of the CD. Decide that it might not be an issue and restart the computer in the hope of booting from the CD. CD is never recognized and looking at the bootmenu, it has USB-cdRom at the top of the list.

More information: CPU is an Intel Pentium 4, 3.2Ghz. I don't believe it is a 64bit computer but I can't verify that. I mention this because I believe the CD I got is the 32bit version and that it should be sufficient but I figured I'd throw it out there in case someone else knew something.

Ubuntu Installation :: Lucid Lynx X64 Server Install ?

Aug 30, 2010

I want to install Ubuntu Server distro. First i downloaded ubuntu-10.04.1-server-amd64.iso and "burned" it to my usb-pen using UltraIso software for windows. That booted from the usb, but just after punshing in the language etc it complains that it cant find the cdrom or something like that. then i try the [url], but that wont boot at all with this same iso mentioned above. and burn it to a darn CD. it boots, but somewhere during the process it stops and asks for the same cd that is actually in the drive already. there is a thread about this here: [url] I then wanted to find an easy iso that i could throw on my usb-pen and install the whole thing through ftp like i did in the old days with floppies. but man, i got lost in the documentation with no clear path on how to do it.

Ubuntu Installation :: Karmic To Lucid : Screen Resolution

I eventually found it on the followwing address : [URL]

It works very well and the resolution has jumped now to 1280*800. The only remaining and identified problem is with grub2 : my system is dual-boot (Windows XP and Ubuntu) and the "recovery" mode does not work anymore for ubuntu, I will maybe have to wait for a next update.

After the completion of the upgrade on restarting the system the computer enters tty1 mode straight without giving me the GUI login screen making it difficult for me to work. The question does now is what could have caused this to happen ? Have i gottten something wrong somewhere?

To switch to tty7 mode i hit the key crtl+alt+7 but it gives an error message about an unknown user even after login in with my username and password on tty1. Start the computer on recovery mode and selected the option correcting broken packages and it produced a result requiring me to download some new packages. I have a huawei e1550 modem which i use to browse in Nigeria. I want to know how i can connect to the internet on the tty1 after insertion of the modem so i can download the necessary packages it requested on issuing dpkg command

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Unlock Screen During Karmic To Lucid Upgrade?

May 3, 2010

using update manager, i allowed my karmic desktop at work to begin the upgrade process to lucid on friday afternoon... i ran out of time, and headed home for the weekend. somewhere along the process, the screen locked. after arriving back at work this morning, i cannot unlock the screen, or even switch users. other threads in this forum seem to indicate that i should've aborted the upgrade, but... i didn't know enough to anticipate problems, and i guess i assumed that given the lengthy estimate to complete the upgrade, i could just pickup the process again on monday.

in any case, cycling the power didn't help, so i downloaded the iso, and have booted to the 10.04 'trial'. i was hoping somebody could help guide me through resetting a password on the on-disk os from the live cd... i'm ok with reinstalling if i can preserve my account's configs & prefs.

Ubuntu Installation :: ASUS P5P55D-E LX Mobo Can't Install 10.04 Lucid Lynx 32-bit

Oct 20, 2010

I just purchased a new PC with the following specs:

Intel Core i5-760
ASUS P5P55D-E LX (S1156 mobo)
Sapphire HD 5750 Vapor-X 1GB Video Card
Samsung 1TB HDD
Corsair DDR3 PC1333 Gaming RAM - 2x2GB
DVD: Samsung DVD burner (internal)

I have made several trials to install Lucid Lynx but all failed:

1. Installed Windows 7 64-bit, hdd formatted as NTFS and ext3, then trying to install Lucid Lynx 32-bit : failed.

2. Installed Windows XP 32-bit, hdd formatted as FAT32, then trying to install Lucid Lynx 32-bit : failed.

3. Trying to install Lucid Lynx 32-bit with a clean hdd formatted as FAT32: failed.

In all the scenarios above, I have tried using Ubuntu installers on CD, DVD, or USB. on CD and DVD, the process always stopped after the Ubuntu logo screen, not even reached the langauage selection screen. On USB, with Legacy set to On in the BIOS, it did run and started by the option screen where we get to choose booting from the usb, or booting from hdd, or memory test, etc., but after choosing the booting from usb (and then hdd also) option, the process also stopped after the Ubuntu logo screen. I have experience dual booting Windows XP with Lucid Lynx on an older system, so I'm not completely new in this. I'd like to know what actually went wrong?

Fedora Installation :: F10 On Homebuilt Server - Screen Goes Blank And Freeze - The Blue Line Changing To White

Jun 4, 2009

Ive recently built a music server with the following configuration:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200 processor
Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2 Motherboard with 2GB ram
Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB SATA Hard Drive
Samsung 22X CD/DVD Burner IDE

I would like to be able to run Fedora 10 (and Vortexbox, an application to burn and store CDs) but have been unsuccessful in getting F10 to load. I am a novice Linux/Fedora user. I've been able to load and run Windows XP on the server with no problem. I have downloaded and verified both the x86_64 DVD and the x86_64 Live CD from the Fedora website. With the live CD, the last thing that appears before the screen goes blank and the install freezes is the blue line changing to white. I have tried several different SATA configurations , have turned off all non essential options in BIOS(ethernet, USB support), and have tried loading with fail safe bios settings.

I already tried creating a new CD and usb stick after re-downloading the .iso installation file and creating the process of creating an installer over and over but still the same problem.
