Ubuntu Multimedia :: How To Restore ALSA Drivers To Version 1.0.23

Dec 11, 2010

I've followed some instructions to patch, compile & install the ALSA git repository in order to make my M-Audio Fast Track Ultra to work properly. After installing and rebooting there is no sound and in fact, in the hardware tab in Sound Preferences there's no device shown. The problem exists only when I boot using the 2.6.35-23-generic kernel. When I boot using the 2.6.35-22-generic kernel there's no problem at all and I can still use my on board sound card (listed as Internal Audio in h/w tab), which was what I was using before installing the patched drivers.

Is there a way to restore the original 1.0.23 ALSA Driver? I tried compiling from source but I get compile errors. Also I've taken a backup of the /etc/ directory -among others- before installing, if that's any use.

if that's any use to you:
in 2.6.35-23

Code:
$ aplay -l
aplay: device_list:235: no soundcards found...
Code:
$ sudo lshw -c sound
*-multimedia UNCLAIMED
description: Multimedia audio controller

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Keep ALSA Drivers Working?

Running songbird, have been just fine for months, now every time I try to play a file I get "autoaudiosink and alsasink are missing." I can cure this by following the "Getting the ALSA drivers from a *fresh* kernel" instructions in the comprehensive sound solutions guide. But I have to do this *every time* I restart my computer. How can I fix this permanently?

I have recently been forced to do a hardware upgrade (my previous mobo died). Now, sounds works ok with, amarok because kde has recognized the new hardware and switched to it.

..... does not work, likely because flash uses alsa-oss which is probably not configured automatically. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling both alsa-oss and flash, but it didn't solve the problem.

I'm having trouble with my sound on my new Fedora 12 machine. when I first installed F12 sound was working but it appears that I have messed up some settings somewhere and now alsa is no longer recognizing my sound card (integrated into my ASUS M4A79XTD EVO motherboard)

Code:
$ aplay -l
aplay: device_list:223: no soundcards found...

I'm sure that when I tried to fix it I probably messed it up worse. Is there an easy way to restore all of my sound settings and audio Drivers back to the F12 defaults without losing everything else?

Ubuntu :: Lock All ALSA Packages And Modules To Version 1.0.23?

Jan 30, 2011

I am using 10.04 but i need alsa to be upgraded to 1.0.23 in order for the sound to work. every once in a while when there is a system update alsa gets overwritten and goes back to 1.0.22 which makes the computer unusable. i already locked the alsa packages and it worked now for some time. but today i got another update that did the same thing. the only solution is to do full alsa upragade again. is there really no other way? which packages do i need to lock to keep alsa at 1.0.23? i don't want to move to 10.10 as i planned to stay with LTS. but if there is no other way... funny how debian chose to use 1.0.23 for their next stable edition, while ubuntu LTS stays with 1.0.22 despite it not working on many newer cards. especiall intel ones it seems.

Debian :: Installing New Version Of Alsa On Stable?

Feb 27, 2010

I recently bought a Dell 10v netbook and put Debian lenny on it. I got everything up and running, except that sound doesn't work. Two links I found said that the solution was to download alsa-drivers, alsa-lib, and alsa-util from the ALSA website and ./configure && make && make install:

[URL]

Another source says this can be fixed on Etch by recompiling alsa from source:

[URL]

However, I'm running stable lenny, and I'd rather do things the "right" way instead of doing a regular make install. Is there a way to grab the binary packages from testing/unstable and install those without problems? If that's not possible, can I grab the source package from testing/unstable and use that? If that's not possible, can I download the source from ALSA's website and build a package myself?

Ubuntu :: Restore ATI Open Source Drivers?

Apr 22, 2010

I have been testing with the ATI Catalyst drivers. I have made a package from the 9.12. I have found that they were not working the way I want, so i tried to switch back via synaptic. I have removed everything which had to do to "fglrx"

now when I restart, here is the message i get

Quote:

UBUNTU is running in low graphic mode The following error was encountered. You may need to update your configuration to solve this. (EE) failed to load module "fglrx" (module does not exist, 0)

For information, it does start in low graphic mode. I have reinstalled the "fglrx" module, but the problem is still the same. If I reinstall the fglrx drivers from synaptic or terminal, I am back with the newer catalyst driver. I cannot switch back to the ubuntu repository one it seem.

I have done the following to try to get the open source back

Quote:

sudo /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh # (if it exists)
sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx*
sudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-ati xserver-xorg-video-radeon
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-ati
sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-dri xserver-xorg-core
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

I still have the same problem. Now I do not have any package installed with "fglrx" I have reconfigured xserver-xorg and it will only start in low graphic mode.

OpenSUSE :: Restore Evolution Data From A Previous Version?

Aug 25, 2010

This is to request assistance or information as to why the evolution application will not accept the evolution-backup-tar.gz file from a previous version.

Situation: I upgraded by way of a fresh install from openSuSE 11.2 to 11.3 (GNOME desktop).
Before upgrading, I produced the above mentioned backup file so that I could import all the mail, addresses etc. into the new application.

Result: it does not work. The process starts up seemingly normal but then simply sits there forever with the message "evolution shuts down" - but it does'nt. I have to kill it to stop it.

I am looking forward to a resolution since it would be a real pity if I lost the mail history.

I am trying Xinerama with nv, but it does not work either!!!

Ubuntu Networking :: Update Drivers In 10.10 - Fedora 14 Using Same Version?

Dec 11, 2010

I've got an Atheros AR5001 Wireless Network Adapter and it works perfectly in Ubuntu 9.04 to 10.04, but when I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 I had to restart my computer several times before the wireless card would start and I would be able to connect to any networks? I then changed to Fedora 14 and the problem was also present so I assumed the problem was my wireless card and not the operating system. However I recently wondered if it was the OS again and went back to 10.04 and my wireless card works flawlessly again. So I'm wondering if there was an update to the drivers in Ubuntu 10.10, and I assume Fedora 14 using the same version? How would I be able to see if they did change? And how would I be able to use the version of the drivers in Ubuntu 10.04 in 10.10 if it is the drivers what changed?

General :: New Drivers Required For Every New Version?

That is no longer true and I have been using Linux (Ubuntu) for the last year or so and I consider it superior to other OS'S and a BIG thanks to all who contribute to make it so great and free. My question is that on some versions of Ubuntu some hardware might work fine(or an package for that matter)and in the next version it might not work. Are new drivers required for every new version? Do all driver work for all versions of Linux using the same kernel?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: SB X-Fi Surround 5.1 USB - ALSA

May 27, 2011

I'm having trouble after installing Lubuntu-desktop on top of a Ubuntu Server (64 bit). about the reason for this abomination of distributions is to achieve 64 bit Lubuntu. I used to run Ubuntu 64 straight, but didn't like Unity at all; Arch Linux was great up until now, but I'd like to settle down and focus more on productivity.

The situation is thus: I cannot manage to make my X-Fi USB sound card work without hacks, and at best it only works in some applications. I *think* it may be a bug in ALSA, but I had no problem in the latest versions of Ubuntu (11.04 as of this) and Xubuntu even (11.04?).

I can currently only play media in VLC media player using the following hack in my ~./asoundrc
