I have an Asus A52J, my problem is that automute is not working well when I put on my headphones. There's solution for that in latest alsa source but I prefer to install it from repositories, I don't want to get my system dirty with make installs. Is there a way to get alsa packages version 1.0.24 as a package? It is safe and clean to install them from alsa page sources?

How do I check that I have the latest drivers installed for everything in my laptop? I'm the kind of person that has that nagging feeling in the back of my head telling me that everything isn't installed perfectly and I need to install my drivers properly (or at least ask).

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have also posted this as a question in ubuntu launchpad but I figure I have more of a chance coming across a solution this way- as I had been struggling with no sound issue (and other issues for so long now!) I first had alsa driver version that came with this 2.6.32-25 preempt kernel: ALSA driver 1.0.22, I believe. My maudio soundcard was detected but I couldn't get sound so I found a suggestion in ubuntu forum to install lucid backports. This created 2.6.32-25 generic kernel which I didn't want since I need low latency (and still had no sound). I tried at first to compile and install Alsa driver 1.0.23 (following Ubuntu Sound Troubleshooting Guide), having booted into the preempt kernel- but ALSA driver 1.0.23 only installed into the generic backport kernel. So I proceeded to remove the 2.6.32-25 backport generic kernel via synaptic.
I once again only have my original preempt kernel 2.6.32.25 and 2.6.32.21 in my grub list. I discovered that I had no soundcard detected and no more ALSA installed, according to 'aplay -l' & 'cat /proc/asound/version' 'cat: /proc/asound/version: No such file or directory' so I proceeded to try to install Alsa driver 1.0.23 twice more but each time I get:

I just installed ubuntu because the newer versions were not working for me. So I installed 7.10 and there is no repositories that are still up. Is there any repositories that I could add from the newer ones or other distro repositories.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am still having trouble installing Debian 6.0.1a (Squeeze) from either CD #1 (KDE version) or netinst version. I tried for a few months to install Squeeze with KDE desktop; now I am trying to build a server, which seems easier (no X.org and KDE problems to worry about.)
Part of the problem common to all my failed attempts (about a dozen!) seems to be that the installer tries to get packages or updates/upgrades from repos but for some reason fails.
I have a commercial all-in-one dslmodem/router/firewall which has very, very limited monitoring capabalities, just enough to show that the PC in question contacted the expected repos (I tried several in different regions) and also shows that no DNS requests failed during that time frame. I did try decreasing the security of the commercial firewall, but that seems to make no difference. I did try to save the install logs, but they didn't fit on a floppy. Any idea what could be going wrong?
I'm running F13, Is that possible? Can I use a rawhide repository to update my radeon floss driver and get latest updates?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've followed some instructions to patch, compile & install the ALSA git repository in order to make my M-Audio Fast Track Ultra to work properly. After installing and rebooting there is no sound and in fact, in the hardware tab in Sound Preferences there's no device shown. The problem exists only when I boot using the 2.6.35-23-generic kernel. When I boot using the 2.6.35-22-generic kernel there's no problem at all and I can still use my on board sound card (listed as Internal Audio in h/w tab), which was what I was using before installing the patched drivers.
Is there a way to restore the original 1.0.23 ALSA Driver? I tried compiling from source but I get compile errors. Also I've taken a backup of the /etc/ directory -among others- before installing, if that's any use.

I install the ATI drivers yesterday and today I've realised that it broke my sound. I have a HDA nVidia sound card built in (with a Realtek chip), but when I run alsaconf, it doesn't find it. It tries to use either the ATI HDMI audio port or a legacy generic driver. Any hints as to how I can fix this?

I tried to install the latest version of Debian from a Live USB on my new laptop (UEFI). Everything goes well during installation (EFI partition, grub-efi, etc), but after restart, my computer does not boot into HDD.

I just found new mesa-dri drivers in the updates-testing repo, installed all of them, uninstalled kmod-nvidia, and it just worked with my geforce 9500GT. For me, this is a huge step forward, the only thing still giving problems is the DVI signal, so I'm stuck in VGA. Even then, I was able to get a better resolution with the DVI signal using this testing drivers than with the nvidia ones (I tried several links suggested by DBelton in the nvidia-installation thread for fixing the DVI issue, to no avail).

Thought I'd put this together based on what I just did as it's hard to find a place where you get complete info in one place for this topic.
Not taking any credit as it's just piecing together stuff found on the net.
Of course this is for my specific hardware and system so YMMV:
- Palit Sonic GT 240 card
- Lucid 10.04.1 64-bit
- Intel DG33FB board and E7200 CPU
- LG monitor L194WT at 1440x900 res
Reason for choosing the latest NVidia drivers instead of the ones available from the System > Administration > Hardware Drivers option is that the latest ones contain specific fixes for my card, that are not available in the others.
Prerequisites:
All of the following is based on a freshly installed 64-bit Lucid 10.04.1 system. Some actions may need modification if you have already been tinkering with Nvidia drivers.
1. Backup your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file if any. The default clean install of 64-bit Lucid 10.04.1 doesn't create this file so unless you have generated and modified the xorg.conf file for your specific needs, skip this.
2. Install the following packages

3. Remove the following packages using Synaptic's 'Completely Remove' option
- nvidia-173-modaliases
- nvidia-96-modaliases

1. Restart and choose the recovery option from the Grub options list.
2. Choose the Root Shell option in the list of options presented subsequently.

4. This will present you with a login prompt. Login with your admin username and password.
5. Navigate to the folder where the driver installer is present and run it, like

8. I think you need to say Yes/ Accept once more time to initiate the driver installation.

10. Back at the prompt, shutdown the system
