Ubuntu Multimedia :: How To Make Webcam Gray-scale

May 19, 2011

I want my webcam to be gray-scale when I use it in Skype and with other programs. I know I can make it gray-scale with Cheese, but that is only with that program. In windows it is a program called Manycam that allows the user to play it in the background and makes the webcam gray-scale over all. Is there an equivalence to Manycam for Ubuntu?

Networking :: Existing Application Models For NS2 (Network Simulator)?

Jun 22, 2010

I am an undergraduate student doing some work in Cambridge, MA on NS2. As my project/paper relates to simulating different types of applications like FTP, RTP, and SIP, as they relate to commercial products (VoIP, email, bittorrent, http) and congestion, I was wondering if anyone knows of any simulation models already available besides the example ones released by NS2 and the contributed code found at [URL]. Also, does anyone know of any tcl scripts that simulate specific applications (including the transport layer and Internet layer)? I am using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and NS2 2.34

Ubuntu :: Make These Types Of Windows Smaller?

Apr 25, 2010

I've noticed this issue for a long time now, and it's always bothered me. Whenever I have to open a file within a program or upload something to a website, etc., the window that pops up is always HUGE. The reason is due to the list of file types at the bottom. Instead of cutting off with an ellipsis at some point, every single applicable file type is listed. I can't resize these windows, either, so they always take up my entire screen. Is there any way to fix this so that these kinds of windows are a more reasonable size?

Ubuntu Networking :: Recognize MSHOME But Doesn't Have Printer Listed In Other Models?

I have a PC for windows connected to my printer. On another PC I just installed & using 10.04 LTS. First of all I am unable to get Ubuntu to find, recognize & install the DCP 395 CN. Linux appears to recognize the MSHOME but does not have my printer listed in the Brother models? This is a wired system consisting of 2 computers through a dsl broadband router. The DCP 395 printer is connected to the Windows PC by USB, if that makes any difference . Would like to connect to the MSHOME or establish a Network that will work.

Server :: Technology For Detecting Types Of Traffic And Allowing To Run Multiple Types?

I would like port 80 to have a small daemon running on it that detects HTTP traffic and sends a small redirect response, and any other traffic begins streaming data from my VPN daemon. I was wondering if this has already been made, or any kind of technology for detecting types of traffic and allowing you to run multiple types of servers on the same port.

I'm trying to use "netlink" to get ip address of a Linux box. But the linux/types.h included from "linux/rtnetlink.h" introduced many conflicting type declarations with "sys/types.h".

#include <rtnetlink.h>

#include <sys/socket.h>
int main (int argc, char *argv[])
{

}

The program will demonstrate such type conflicts.

Networking :: Make NFS Mounts Easy To Find For OpenSuSE 11.2 Users?

Oct 29, 2010

Our organization uses OpenSuSE servers (NFS/LDAP/SAMBA/more...) and are in the works migrating all the workstations for users to SuSE from Windows as well.

I like how in windows the mapped network drives are all listed in My Computer. OpenSuSE has a similar "My Computer" that lists current drives, and general PC info (in KDE, which is what we use in the office). Is there a way to list mounted drives in here, so that users can easily find the network drives? I'm open to alternatives to listing it in SuSE's sysinfo page, as long as it doesn't mean telling my old school windows users, "oh yeah, all your network drives are in /mnt/shares/...they wont have a CLUE what that means. It HAS to be easy for them to navigate to.

My attached image is just a screen shot of SuSE's "My Computer" so you can see where I would ideally like to put the shares.

Ubuntu :: Make CPU Scale Up When 100% Is Used Regardless If 80% Of That Is "io Wait"?

May 23, 2010

When I run large rsync sessions (backup purposes), I often find that the cpu goes up to 100% on both cores, and the systems gets almost unusable as slow it is. Top reveals around 80% is reported as "wa", which is IO Wait right?

Well, using the CPUfreq applet, it is possible (but irritatingly sloow) to manually set the cpu frequency to the highest possible. After this the computer gets much more snappy. How can this be done without manual intervention, anyone knows?

Ubuntu :: Grsync - Filtering File Types / Getting Only Some File Types Getting Included And Not Others?

Sep 1, 2011

I'm using Grsync and I want to be able to plug in any drive into my laptop and run rsync on it to back up all the user documents on there to another external hdd and to exclude everything else. Working on the principle that user documents don't always appear where we'd expect I want rsync to look through the whole drive and filter what it backs up by file type. I am only having partial success, however.

I am using the 'filter' option in the 'additional options' box. I am using the command
Code:
filter='merge /home/tim/Desktop/filter'
and I am attaching the filter file I have written. (I have added the .txt extention to upload it).

I have tested this script on my home folder and here's what's going wrong. Rsync will copy the entire directory structure regardless of whether there are any files to be copied over in those directories. I am also getting only some file types getting included and not others. .odt and .ods files are copied, for instance, but not .doc or .rtf.

Ubuntu Networking :: Networking Involving Multiple IP Address Types - 192 And 172?

Jul 6, 2011

I have one router, a linksys. It allows wireless and wired connections, as is normal. I have two XP machinesby wire to the router and three linux machines connected wirelessly. The XP machines both have IP addresses beginning with 192.168. while my three linux machines have IP addresses that all begin with 172. None of the machines is connected with a static IP address. All are automatic DHCP.I am told that the above scenario makes no sense. However, such is what I have so, I trust, the theory and the fact do not gel. I would not care except that I cannot see - using the nautilus network servers program, all of the XP computers with some of my linux boxes.

Networking :: Multiple (NIC's, Types, Etc.) Networks Use A Single DCHP?

Jul 8, 2010

I know a fair amount about setting up a simple network but I'm curious about setting up a more complex topology...For example...A "box" has two NIC's acting as a bridge, normally this would involve two distinct networks (ie. 192.213... and 192.214...) is it possible that this physical set up can create a single network (192.213... 192.213...) resolving IP's from either a DCHP on the "box" or a DCHP server somewhere else on "one side of the box"likewise with differing physical network types, a "box" with a NIC and a TCP/IP over usb setup connected to another device with TCP/IP over usb (OTG/Gadget) so that all the IP's are on one logical network.

Fedora Networking :: Mapping Windows Users On Unix Users

Sep 29, 2010

Samba up and running on my pc. pc runs FC12 with kde. A laptop has win vista. The pc can access the shares on the laptop but the laptop has authentication issues to access the pc. Note that windows doesnt enforce authentication forincoming network connections.Using the system-config-samba util i tried to map a windows user to the unix user "feduser". The laptop (named LAPPY) has a user (lapuser) which has on windows no password.What should I tell samba config what the windows username should be? lapuser or LAPPYlapuser doesnt work because when accessing the pc via the laptop, the authentication fails. The only auth that is successful is when choosing the same winusername as the unix username.

Secondary, id like to setup the laptop so that the user doesnt have to provide a name and password, or at least not more then once in the lifetime of the laptop. Note that you cant provide an empty password to system-config-samba. How is that possible?

Strange but not really on issue imho:the samba - KDE control module(kcmshall4) (and the smb.conf) shows 2 shares: the homedirs and the data dir the samba server configurator (system-config-samba) shows only the datadir.

Security :: CA And Browser Trust Models Need Overhaul

Oct 23, 2010

The cryptographic underpinnings of the Internet, as presently constituted, are messy, chaotic and rather randomly constructed. And that infrastructure is not only ripe for a variety of attacks, but is not easily fixable, a group of experts said Friday. At a forum on browser security sponsored by a Washington policy think tank, a group of technologists and policy experts from industry and government outlined the serious architectural and implementation problems with SSL, the certificate authority infrastructure and the way that browsers handle certificates. It was not a pretty picture. The problems extend from the way that CAs issue certificates to how certificates are handled by the major browsers to the way that attackers are able to take advantage of the weaknesses throughout the system.

Ubuntu / Apple :: New AppleSMC Module For All Models - Call For Testing

Oct 27, 2010

New applesmc kernel module with dynamic configuration. The amount of machines supported by this module has increased rapidly over the past years, and the detailed driver support of the many flavors is quickly becoming a problem. The attached dkms package contains a new, dynamically configured driver which fixes a number of outstanding issues:

* Support for all new models since MacbookPro 6.
* Support for variable number of processors in the MacPros.
* Handles the odd temperature sensor types found on new models.
* Fixes minor read problems on many intermediate models.

And, of course, all models back to the MacBook1,1 should work at least as well as before. Please test and report the outcome in this thread, stating your machine model and a simple "OK" or a description of the problem. As soon as things seem to work as expected, the patches will go upstream.

Hardware :: Models And Makes Of Good Internal SATA Or IDE DVD-CD Burners?

Nov 10, 2010

I wonder what are models and makes of good internal SATA or IDE DVD-CD burners. I'd like to get one for my desktop tower since I've only had CD burners before. For burning, I use k3b and I'd be doing more CD burning than DVD burning but would also use the burner to watch a DVD movie now and then.

I'd prefer one that isn't too fussy about media. In other words, I'd be happy to have one that takes and plays nicely with commonly found media, rather than with exotic, hard-to-find media. And a burner that handles a good range of the various DVD formats would be nice too.

I don't need LightScribe because I figure it will only work for Windows users. Yes or No? [But does Linux have some package that lets this LightScribing work?]

[My OS is MEPIS 8.5, a Debian-based OS which uses Synaptic for package downloading and installation.] Tell me what good luck you've had with burner and tell what makes/models to avoid.
