I can't seem to get my videos to open with VLC automatically. They open with the built in movie player, but I don't want that. I have VLC installed, but each time I have to right click on the file and go to Open With.

View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen Lucid Lynx came out I did a clean install on my laptop by burning an iso. Unfortunately, I got an annoying bug in which the image would always be wiggly (wavy) in the external monitor. In an attempt to fix the issue, I tried to installed Ati's restricted drivers. Unfortunately, my graphics card (Radeon x1200) isn't supported by them on Ubuntu 10.04, and trying to install it anyway only made things worse.
Right now, I just want it to be back to what it was when I first installed Lucid. Following the instructions on this page, I have already removed the fglrx drivers, and I think I installed the open-source driver. However, I can tell that things are not the way they were when I first installed. By going in "Main menu > System > Preferences > Monitors" I get the usual menu to configure the monitors, except I can't actually configure anything.
There's only one monitor (listed as Unknown), and the system doesn't let me change any of the settings (such as resolution or frequency). The external monitor is showing the same output as the laptop monitor, and doesn't get recognized by the system. I just want to use the exact graphics drivers that came installed in Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. But I don't want to do a clean install.
I just reinstalled my laptop with OpenSUSE 11.4, 64-bit and I'm using gnome 3.0, I can't figure out how to change the default video player to vlc though...I've tried going to 'Applications' --> 'System Tools' --> 'System Settings' --> 'System info'Here I can choose default programs, however vlc does not appear in the drop-down menu for videos. I do have vlc installed. I can choose to play videos with it when I right-click video files. View 2 Replies View RelatedI reinstall OpenSUSE (For whatever reasons) where I prefer having VLC as my default video player, for every media type (.wmv, .mkv, .avi, .mpg).
I realize that I can go into Configure Desktop > Advanced > File Associations, but then I have to individually select each (quite cryptic) media type, and manually change my preference.
This should be way easier than it is (I'm computer literate, but can you imagine a new user trying to change these settings?)
Running Ubuntu 9.10 ,installed vlc via synaptic work fine. Using the preference setting i download and install a new skin. When i launch vlc 2 version open ,one with the new and one with the default skin.Vlc is lock up. tried uninstalling and reinstalling still

I'm vaguely remembering a video stream ripper that was open source and could be compiled for linux, mac, and windows. It's name ended with ++ and I can't remember anything else Basically, it was like StreamTransport but open source and multiprotocol capable. Can anybody help me find it again? I'd be open to alternatives too of course! My basic need is to rip anything being rendered by my video card.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've made a lot of progress getting my easycap 2.0 usb capture device to work with ubuntu 10.10. I've got the picture up any everything works great. But about a minute into the stream it just freezes, I need to go into "playback" and either pause then play, or click "next", it then refreshes and works again for another minute or so. I'd believe it if someone says faulty hardware because the easycap is cheap, but I don't think that's the case. Additionally, is there any way to set VLC so that when I open it, it automatically opens with my video capture device (/dev/video0) so that I don't have to go into the options and change it every time?

Another thing as well. By default i have GNOME version. Just installed the KDE full package from synpatic. when i try to log in with kde manager same like the flash, it logs me out to welcome screen.

If I take out the existing video card and put in another one of a different type (but not a different brand), how does Ubuntu behave? I know what Windows typically does. Windows starts up the screen using a default video driver which is at least 1024 by 768 and then asks you what this new bit of hardware is and asks where the drivers are. I'm pretty sure Ubuntu has default drivers of its own, but I don't know what their resolution is.

View 8 Replies View RelatedWhen I play large HD videos in mplayer, the video and sound frequently get out of sync, and the video plays a little strangely (occasionally speeding up and occasionally slowing down).
I think it's because mplayer is only running on a single core. As I've got a quad-core processor, it seems inefficient. I've seen that there is theoretically a way to get mplayer to work with multicore setups, but it requires compiling with different options. That'd take me a little while to work through.
Ideally there would be a pre-compiled version in the software centre, or a player which has support built in (again, ideally in the software centre). Is there such a thing available?

The way to fix it would be to separate the audio and video streams, speed up the video (the audio is FINE, it's the video that's wrong), and then recombining them. (and generally online streaming) - this works just fine. this messy video playback also appears when I use cheese to capture video with my webcam. this happens with both VLC and Totem, when in either of those programs playing a video, if I click on one of the top menus, say View in Totem, the video stays on top of the drop down options. In order to see the options I have to hover over them with the mouse at which point they become momentarily visible. I read a post somewhere where someone had a similar problem and it was solved by reinstalling Compiz, but I've tried uninstalling it entirely, reinstalling it, etc. and none of it works. It doesn't happen with flash videos in firefox, it does happen with visualisations in Totem, and it only started happening since I upgraded to 11.04.

I have previously used Cinelerra-cv (on Karmic) and recently Openshot (on Lucid) with not much trouble. I have been sampling other video editors (Kdenlive, avidemux, kino etc). Now I have my video card crashing whichever I use, mainly when trying to load clips. I have disabled Compiz, uninstalled all video editors and then reinstalled one at a time. I still get early video crashes whichever I try.
I am setting up a MythTV environment to switch from Windows based MediaPortal (with a high number of disturbing bugs). Yet, I have three difficulties, which I want to discuss with you. They are:
- No audio via HDMI see [URL]
- Video resolution seems to change during video playback
- Channels cannot be found via DVB-S [URL]
As you can see, I have created three posts to keep discussions focused.
Alltogether I have the following setup:
- AMD 5050e CPU
- 8 GByte RAM
- Biostar TA890GXE
- Samsung LE40M86BD, connected via HDMI (and only HDMI)
- Mythbuntu 10.10 with proprietary drivers installed
- Technisat Skystar HD2 DVB-S card (two times)
Now, here is the problem:
Whenever I playback any video material using e.g. VLC, the screen resolution changes. This also applies when playback the video in a window and not fullscreen. The problem is that whenever the screen resolution changes, short time later the TV set blanks screen and show the TV set specific information "unsupported video mode".
How can I enforce to stay in the configured video mode?
Since upgrading to Lucid, I haven't been able to play videos in Totem or VLC player, though I've got all the necessary codecs. The sound plays, but I just get a black screen with (very) occasional flashes of the image. However, I've found that SMPlayer DOES work.
Is there a way to make it the default, so that when I double-click the vids, it will fire up automatically, instead of my having to use right-click/open-with ? I've tried changing it in the multimedia tab of 'Preferred Software', but that doesn't seem to work.
