Ubuntu :: How To Change Default Video Player
May 3, 2010
Since upgrading to Lucid, I haven't been able to play videos in Totem or VLC player, though I've got all the necessary codecs. The sound plays, but I just get a black screen with (very) occasional flashes of the image. However, I've found that SMPlayer DOES work.
Is there a way to make it the default, so that when I double-click the vids, it will fire up automatically, instead of my having to use right-click/open-with ? I've tried changing it in the multimedia tab of 'Preferred Software', but that doesn't seem to work.

I prefer VLC over totem, but I can't seem to make it the default. What I've tried:Right click on a video file, select "Open with Other Application..." select VLC, check "remember this application..." click Open. Then I close VLC, double click on the video file and... it opens in Totem.I checked out system>preferences>preferred applications, but under multimedia all I could select is music playback.

I just reinstalled my laptop with OpenSUSE 11.4, 64-bit and I'm using gnome 3.0, I can't figure out how to change the default video player to vlc though...I've tried going to 'Applications' --> 'System Tools' --> 'System Settings' --> 'System info'Here I can choose default programs, however vlc does not appear in the drop-down menu for videos. I do have vlc installed. I can choose to play videos with it when I right-click video files. But I'd like vlc to be the default so that I can just double click the video file and vlc plays it.It is a little bit confusing as totem is set as the default video player in the above-mentioned window, but when I double click a video file banshee starts

i just installed ubuntu, latest version. i accepted the default media player. when i had windows installed, i was able to play videos at any level without any problems. the video player played very smooth whether it was in ..... or any other site. i took windows off, installed ubuntu, and now, the video is extremely choppy. the audio is fine, but the video is like it is playing 1 frame a second, instead of 30 frames a second. is there a better media player than the default? is there a setting i can adjust, like a buffer or something? i think the default is rhythmbox music player? for the video.

I finally got the server running. All seems OKAY, however I want to change the default player on my server. As of now, when I upload a file, it plays but has no "play/pause/stop/mute/fullscreen" buttons. How do I get those? I've tried installing FFMPEG, MPlayer and a few others to no avail. Please suggest a tried&true method of allowing for this. I need it to be able to at least play audio(mp3) and video(mp4,wmv,avi,flv)

I changed the default player for mp3 to audacious, which works fine, just that every time I doubleclick a mp3 file, a second application button appears in my taskbar saying "opening [file]" which looks like the default player. this program will eventually time out and go away, but it's still annoying - any idea on how I would go about fixing this?

I've been away from Linux for a while, so I need to get informed about some of the 32- vs. 64-bit issues concerning video players and codecs. So, what is everyone using these days?
More specifically, is it possible to play, e.g., .wmv files with 64-bit Kaffeine (my favorite player) or any other 64-bit video player? If so, then which combination of player and codec should I use?

If I take out the existing video card and put in another one of a different type (but not a different brand), how does Ubuntu behave? I know what Windows typically does. Windows starts up the screen using a default video driver which is at least 1024 by 768 and then asks you what this new bit of hardware is and asks where the drivers are. I'm pretty sure Ubuntu has default drivers of its own, but I don't know what their resolution is.

this happens with both VLC and Totem, when in either of those programs playing a video, if I click on one of the top menus, say View in Totem, the video stays on top of the drop down options. In order to see the options I have to hover over them with the mouse at which point they become momentarily visible. I read a post somewhere where someone had a similar problem and it was solved by reinstalling Compiz, but I've tried uninstalling it entirely, reinstalling it, etc. and none of it works. It doesn't happen with flash videos in firefox, it does happen with visualisations in Totem, and it only started happening since I upgraded to 11.04.

I am setting up a MythTV environment to switch from Windows based MediaPortal (with a high number of disturbing bugs). Yet, I have three difficulties, which I want to discuss with you. They are:
- No audio via HDMI see [URL]
- Video resolution seems to change during video playback
- Channels cannot be found via DVB-S [URL]
As you can see, I have created three posts to keep discussions focused.
Alltogether I have the following setup:
- AMD 5050e CPU
- 8 GByte RAM
- Biostar TA890GXE
- Samsung LE40M86BD, connected via HDMI (and only HDMI)
- Mythbuntu 10.10 with proprietary drivers installed
- Technisat Skystar HD2 DVB-S card (two times)
Now, here is the problem:
Whenever I playback any video material using e.g. VLC, the screen resolution changes. This also applies when playback the video in a window and not fullscreen. The problem is that whenever the screen resolution changes, short time later the TV set blanks screen and show the TV set specific information "unsupported video mode".
How can I enforce to stay in the configured video mode?

How do I set VLC as the default DVD player in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS?There seems to be no obvious way to change in which player the DVD's open up in - you can only choose the default media player, but this is not what I want to do.I would like VLC as a default for DVD viewing only - I use Totem for other video files. I used Kaffeine for a while to play DVD's, but found VLC to be superior, especially in DVD menu support.
I know there are threads about how this is done in previous versions (like in 8.04 and so on), but I'm not sure if those still apply for 10.04? Through gconf-editor

I would also like to change the open with option in the right click menu. The current option is to open with movie player, and movie player cannot seem to find additional plug ins to open file with.

I'm running Windows 7 and Ubuntu(latest version), dual boot, and I've locked myself out of Ubuntu. I have 2 hard disks and 2 cd/dvd drives. I was working on getting my 2nd hard drive to mount on boot up and succeeded. I should have left well enough alone, but I changed the 2 cd drive from swap to default, (just to see if it would mount automatically), and now I can't boot into ubuntu. It just hangs. I can't even in get using recovery mode because the updated graphics drivers won't allow me to read the screen during the boot into ubuntu until the boot has completed. If anyone has any ideas, please help. It had been working pretty well until this set back.

I've tried everything first I tried with Preferences/Preferred Applications - no result. then File Type Manager from Ubuntu Tweek - nothing... I tried with a few older Exaile versions (from various repo's) - nothing... compiling 0.3.1.1 from source - still nothing. with these I can set every other player to be default player (so, only Exaile refuses to obey). to be more exact, after setting Exaile as default, double-click on any audio file associated with it results with temporary CPU usage increase and than NOTHING :S just don't tell me to use VLC, Audacious, Rhythmbox, Amarok, QL or any other player... I used them all but I NEED Exaile (and not just because it looks beautiful enough with Ambiance to make me completely forget foobar2k... and because it's sooo stubborn ).
