Debian Multimedia :: XOrg Auto-detect Failing To Detect Max Screen Resolution

May 29, 2011

I've installed Squeeze 2.6.32-5-amd64 on my laptop (Alienware M17X R3, Intel i7 Sandybridge, ATI Technologies Inc Broadway [ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6800 Series])The screen is 17", with maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080. After a default install of the operating system, the maximum resolution I can select is 1280 x 1024.My research so far has suggested that I need to edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and provide xorg with the necessary resolution.

Again, by default, the xorg.conf file is not created. This leads me to believe that xorg is scanning my hardware at startup and providing me with whatever it thinks is appropriate. I tried following these instructions to generate an xorg.conf file. This process created an xorg.conf file under /root/.

When I copy this xorg.conf file to /etc/X11, I get a blank (i.e. black) screen. Deleting this file restores the default resolution 1280 x 1024.This system is dual booting with Windows 7. Under windows I am able to get a 1920 x 1080 resolution, so I know my hardware is up to it.At this stage I have yet to install the drivers for the Radeon graphics card. What are my options regarding configuring xorg to give me a higher screen resolution?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Can't Detect TV In NVidia-settings With Xorg-config

Feb 14, 2010

I have connected my computer to my LCD-TV (HDMI-cable) to enjoy my movies and such, on a big screen. I have nVidia GeForce 7050 so in nvidia-settings I've been using the TwinView configuration which allows me to see both the monitor and the TV.

There was a bit of trouble-shooting but it worked just fine until yesterday when I changed my monitor to a new one and on the way probably messed up in nvidia-settings. I thought it would be easy to fix it but the configuration (in nvidia-settings) is stuck on "separete x-screen" and doesn't allow any changes at all. When I hit the "Detect display" nothing happens although I have the TV connected!

Maybe my xorg.config could tell somebody what is wrong. I've been messing around with the file and made lots of changes acc to different advices but I really don't understand the options and settings so I'm afraid I'll soon do something inreperable.

Ubuntu :: Could Not Detect Graphics Or KB Or Mouse

Feb 22, 2011

I have run into a problem with a existing workstation I can't seem to figure out. My configuration:Ubuntu 10.10 64 ASUS M2N68-AM Plus MB w/ Nvidia Geforce 7025 graphics.Has been running for almost exactly one year beautifully. System suddenly froze. When I rebooted, system stopped with message saying it could not detect graphics or KB or mouse. I suspected hardware failure but when I booted from live CD, It ran fine. I then ran e2fsck -c and found no bad blocks but 1 messed up inode which it fixed.

I assume at this point the only problem is some lost configuration on video. I first tried apt-get nvidia drivers. this got rid of the message but now X will not start because of "no valid modes". Tried running nvidia-xconfig but it exits without changing anything. All user files seem to be OK. I'm not going to have to nuke this thing just to restore X am I?

Debian :: Mouse / Touchpad And Keyboard Not Working After Configuring Xorg

Jul 31, 2011

I was trying to tweak my video card's performance by configuring the xorg.conf file. There were many lines unrelated to the card there; so, to make the file cleaner, I decided to delete all the sections except the one I was dealing with. Obviously I shouldn't have done that. After rebooting the system, all the hardware that provided human interface stopped working. Now I have to find a way to delete that xorg.conf file. The computer is still connecting to the internet, and I have another computer running Debian available. Is there a way to access the broken computer with the other one?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Setting Mouse Options Without Xorg.conf ?

Dec 26, 2009

I just installed 11.2, and discovered when I went to setup my Logitech Marble Trackball, that there was no /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. After some Googleing, I created one using sax2, Edited it to add the appropriate parameters to enable scrolling using the ball, and all works great.

My question is if there is a more "correct" way to change the parameters, as the mouse parameters are obviously stored somewhere on the machine.

BTW, for those with a Marble Trackball, all you need to know about the xorg.conf setup can be found here:

Ubuntu :: Corrupt Mouse Pointer After Editing Xorg.conf?

Jun 13, 2011

I'm testing a new PC and for business reasons it has to be able to run with Ubuntu 8.04 .The first problem I had was with the Intel GMA 4500 graphics driver. I have managed to resolve that and can now get resolutions > 800x600. However since then the mouse pointer is intermittently corrupt. I've attached an image showing the corrupt pointer which is about the size of a thumbnail. The driver I have installed is xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.4.0~melchiorre-5_i386.deb .I've also attached a copy of my xorg.conf file. While I've been writing this post I've noticed that if I take a screenshot or if I connect to the PC using VNC the entire screen is corrupt.

Fedora Installation :: 11 Live CD Won't Detect Keyboard Or Mouse And Speakers During Boot

Sep 12, 2009

I am running Vista on my C: drive and I just got Fedora 11. I planned to dual boot Vista and fedora 11. I Downloaded the Live CD from the site (680 +- MB) and burned the files IN the .iso file to an empty DVD and CD. Shrank my D: drive and now have about 27 GiB wort of unpartitioned space. I booted from the Live CD. everything went OK until i chose Boot from the Boot Menu that came up. First it took me to a screen with the following message:

ACPI: expecting a [reference] package element found type 5. and then in went on to boot normally. Then when it reached the user login screen, I found that my mouse and keyboard were'nt responding and that there was no lights on any of the keys. I checked the USB cables and did a hard shutdown and booted from the Live CD again, but the problem persists.

Ubuntu :: Xorg Doesn't Detect Monitor / Won't Display Higher Than 800x600 On A 1400x900 Monitor

Apr 3, 2010

I installed Karmic on an older PC I had laying around, and the only trouble I am having is with screen resolution. It uses an old ATI chipset (onboard) for video, and it doesn't seem to do EDID correctly, so I can't display anything higher than 800x600. I have tried creating an xorg.conf, but it's still not working. How can I tell Xorg to ignore the fact it can't detect a widescreen monitor and display something larger than 800x600? I noticed the log says the sync's are out of range, but I am not sure how to fix it.

Here is my current xorg.conf.

Code:
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "X.org Configured"
Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"

/dev/mapper
nvidia_dcabdggcp1

I then created a file system on nvidia_dcabdggcp1 and mounted it to /share

Software :: Centos 5.6 When Set Dual Monitors It Crashed Xorg?

Jun 24, 2011

I am having some real problems with my dual monitor setup in Centos 5.6.I am trying to run 2 individual monitors like span say the whole desktop over 2 monitors say, using the Admin>Display (I think it's that menu, sorry working from MS Windows at the moment). But everytime I set them up perfectly, every time as it requests you do reboot your computer once the changes have been comitted (written to presumably the xorg config file), the whole Window X Server? it crashes.

Any suggestions as to what to do? I am using an Nvidia Gefore 9600 GSO 768Mb RAM graphics card on it, using one DVI monitor and then an old CRT, but surely it should be the software or even the drivers that are causing the problem.I mean I could just put up with having one monitor but it really bugs me, as I prefer to have one screen for my research and one screen for my production work so to speak. Also I am running an AMD processor +4400 to be exact

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Request For Working Xorg.conf For ATI 4xxx Systems?

Nov 10, 2010

I just set up a new CentOS 5.5 system (using the 5.5 DVD, yum updated all packages to latest) which unfortunately due to various issues and most critically availability, has an ATI-4350. The install went OK but X does not detect the card properly so it's using the slow VESA driver. I followed the instructions here [URL] to download and install the ATI driver. It appeared to be correctly installed but not used.

Display still detects my monitor and 4350 as unknown and using some "Vendor supplied driver". Yet under the "Dual Head" tab, if I would to enable it, the ATI-4350 comes up as an option, hence implying that the driver was corrected installed and the card is actually detected. I suspect it might have to do with my Xorg.conf, although trying to edit in several ways didn't make it work.
