I had Ubuntu 10.04 running fine. Then I got curious about NVIDIA XServer.
"ATI Technologies Inc RV380 [Radeon X600 (PCIE)]" - Video Card
I opened it up, clicked a settings change, and said OK.
It said you need to update your blah blah blah.
Then it said blah blah blah doesn't exist.
Then it said it would create it for me.
Then I said REBOOT!
Now I get a black screen of death.
The only way I can get anything to happen on my monitor that comes from this computer is to boot into the Install Disk and say "TRY UBUNTU".

Issue: Black screen displays after nVidia splashscreen.
History: I performed a clean install of Fedora 12. I performed NVidia driver "GEForce 4 and below" install for a PAE kernel as found here:[URL]..I kept a log of each command in the order performed:
[Code]...
Well, I just got back from the Pepsi Center after watching the Denver Nuggets NBA basketball team look silly against the Dallas Mavericks. 4.5 hours later and I still have a black screen. Was it Einstein who said, "it is insanity to do the same thing, the same way, over and over and expect a different result"? I feel I will been testing that hypothesis soon.

I am running Wheezy 7.9 and recently created a file, in xorg.conf.d, to set the monitor configuration because the EDID is not always read from the monitor. Everything works great but when the EDID is not read the monitor name, as shown in System Settings>Displays, shows as Unknown. I have the vendor info and modelname in the config file but they do not show in the Display GUI. Is there some variable that I can set in order to get a good monitor name displayed?
Probably should include some more information. I am using the Gnome Classic desktop and gdm manager. Here is the monitor conf file that I put in /etc/X11/xorg,conf.d
Code: Select allSection "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
VendorName "VSC"
ModelName "VA912b"
DisplaySize 376 301
HorizSync 30.0 - 82.0
VertRefresh 50.0 - 85.0

I had some issues with nvidia drivers, and removed all of the packages using
Code: Select allrm /etc/X11/xorg.conf and Code: Select allapt-get purge nvidia*
Upon reboot, I was back with nouveau drivers and proceeded to reinstall nvidia drivers according to [URL] .....
Code: Select allapt-get install nvidia-driver
apt-get install nvidia-xconfig
I can then change my refresh rate using
Code: Select allnvidia-settings
but when I hit "Save to X configuration file", I get the following output in terminal:
Code: Select allroot@debian:/home/anon# nvidia-settings
Package xorg-server was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `xorg-server.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
No package 'xorg-server' found
As a result, my nvidia preferences aren't saved across reboot.
Here are all of my sources:
Code: Select alldeb [arch=amd64,i386] http://repo.steampowered.com/steam/ precise steam
deb-src [arch=amd64,i386] http://repo.steampowered.com/steam/ precise steam
deb http://ftp.ca.debian.org/debian/ jessie non-free contrib main
deb-src http://ftp.ca.debian.org/debian/ jessie non-free contrib main

Using online Debian guide, installed latest nvidia-current, glx etc which seems to be 195.xx Machine boots to GUI but monitor setting menu doesnt respond nor is there an nvidia specific one. xorg.conf shows 'nvidia' driver but I suspect I am still on 'nouveau' since the synapatic package manager doesn't show an nvidia xserver-xorg-video choice.
Second question, any trailheads for using wheezy based drivers (i.e. nvidia's latest 270.xx) with squeeze?

I'm a relatively new Debian user, having come from Ubuntu. I recently bought a Dell micro-server to function as my Kodi media player. I installed an nVidia GeForce 210 to output to my Pioneer home theatre amplifier. The amp takes all my inputs (eg. Satellite set-top decoder, PS3, Kodi etc) and outputs to the TV. I installed XFCE as my desktop environment so that I could still interact with it via VNC.
Everything is working great except for one exceptionally annoying problem! Every day, I find that I am having to VNC into the desktop, load up nVidia X Settings, and change my screen resolution from Auto to 1920x1080 because it has lost the display configuration and the screen is blank. I presume this happens when the amplifier switches from one input to the next. It doesn't matter if I save the configuration to my X11.conf file or not - it still resets itself.
Before, this setup would run for months without any intervention (Same amplifier + HP microserver + Ubuntu + LXDE + ATI video card), so I'm pretty confident that the issue is either Debian, XFCE, or the nVidia card.

I got the nVidia driver and Compiz installed. Everything's running fine . But then I tried crtl+alt+F1 - which worked though the font was way too big - and then crtl+alt+F7 to get back to the Desktop but it went to a black screen and blinking cursor instead. I searched a bit and it seems this was a problem a few years back but nothing recent. FWIW, I don't have this problem with Hardy/nVidia/Compiz on another drive in this same machine. Is there a way to fix this?

After installing some (much needed) upgrades, I am stuck being unable to install nvidia-settings after screen-resolution-extra upgraded from .11 to .13. Nvidia-settings, supposedly, requires .11. I can, of course, downgrade to .11, but I do not know if this is recommended. Is there anyway to get nvidia-settings back without downgrading? What is a good course of action?

I currently have a problem with my nvidia settings
I reinstalled 11.04 kubuntu recently and I no longer could use my second screen.
I looked into my nvidia settings and enabled my second screen (separate x screen).
However when I do so and press apply the second screen does nothing.
This is two desktop monitors and not a laptop and a monitor.

I got out my old Fuji Finepix s3100 and set it to web cam mode to see if anything had changed in the world of usb video drivers. Lo and behold it worked! I can watch myself on cheese web cam booth. kewl, but I wanted more. So, just recently hearing about chatroulette on the Daily Show, I click and wahla no go . After flash comes up and asks for and receives user permission to access my hardware, I click to find a random stranger, and my camera displays yellow and blue lines across its onscreen display box. I notice that movement is noticed by the camera. If I move I notice a change in background/lines. As far as I can tell, my camera is not a fault. I mean it works for local viewing. Is this a flash or possibly a chatroulette problem?

I want to set the HTTP_PROXY and HTTPS_PROXY and http_proxy and FTP_PROXY environment variables "somewhere", so all programs that recognise these can find them. I need root to find them for slackpkg and sbopkg, I need users to find them for Dropbox, I need them for cronjobs and scripts and wget.So I want to set these environment variables up somewhere, preferably something in /etc and have them set and accessible for everyone and everything. I am not using KDE or XFCE or any desktop. I need a command line solution.
Where is the best place to put this? I see that some other distros have a /etc/environment and these variables go in there. In Slackware, should I add them as a new file in /etc/profile.d and have them added every time /etc/profile is accessed? Is there a Slackware approved method that I don't know about?

I just upgraded my Debian Etch to Lenny. After doing so, Xorg displays no fonts. I get only rectangles. This occurs in the Login Screen and after logging in. The only thing that is readable are the contents of a terminal (even gnome-terminal). What can I do to solve this Problem? The Xorg.0.log doesn't give me any clue on what's the problem.

I'm running dual-screen. On 24" at 1920x1080 and one 19" at 1440x900. After installing Mint 9 I can't set the resolution any higher than 640x480 in nvidia-settings. I've installed the "recommended" nvidia-driver that Mint suggests.
[Code]...
What could be the problem? Why can't I set the res higher than 640 in nvidia-settings? Everything worked in Mint 8 (10.04). During installation the res was higher than 640.

I've installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my Macbook Pro 5,5. Everything is running fine with some tweaks. Just one thing bothers me: when I tell Nvidia X Server Settings that I want to use my external screen as primary screen it doesn't put the gnome panels to the other screen, well... sometimes it does after a couple times but most of the time it doesn't.is there a way to automatically detect when I connect a monitor instead of going to the Nvidia settings? Just the way Mac OS X does?

So I enable it as a separate x display, then save, but when I restart x, the settings didn't save. I save the config under under /etc/X11/xorg.conf. What am I doing wrong?

I just bought a new 24inch monitor that supports the resolution 1920x1200. Unfortunately, the nvidia-settings dialog does not have this resolution as an option (currently running on 1920x1080). The graphics card is Geforce 6200 (should support the wanted resolution), and the monitor is connected with the VGA cable (if that matters).

In squeeze, Kazehakase just displays a blank page, regardless of how I open it (from file manager, from terminal, from mail client or from menu and bookmark.) This problem occurs with version 0.5.8-3 (i386) and goes away with a forced downgrade to 0.5.8-2. If I open it from a terminal, the program open to a blank page, and there's no output in the terminal. Does anyone else have this problem, and does anyone have suggestions on what to look for to maybe fix this? I don't see any matching bug reports, but I'm prepared to make one.

I have a Geforce GTX 650ti video card.
I'm logged in as a non-superuser account named "john."
I open NVIDIA X Server Settings GUI, change my monitors' brightness from 0.000 to -0.1, go to the "nvidia-settings Configuration" section, click "Save Current Configuration" and click "Quit."
But when I reboot, the brightness is back at 0.000.

I have connected my computer to my LCD-TV (HDMI-cable) to enjoy my movies and such, on a big screen. I have nVidia GeForce 7050 so in nvidia-settings I've been using the TwinView configuration which allows me to see both the monitor and the TV.
There was a bit of trouble-shooting but it worked just fine until yesterday when I changed my monitor to a new one and on the way probably messed up in nvidia-settings. I thought it would be easy to fix it but the configuration (in nvidia-settings) is stuck on "separete x-screen" and doesn't allow any changes at all. When I hit the "Detect display" nothing happens although I have the TV connected!
Maybe my xorg.config could tell somebody what is wrong. I've been messing around with the file and made lots of changes acc to different advices but I really don't understand the options and settings so I'm afraid I'll soon do something inreperable.

Yesterday I played a little with a Bitcoin miner and discovered today that I must have scambled my 3D settings. My Intel graphics card doesn't seem to work, instead I must have added a nVidia Settings Manager to my menu.
I already removed the package I mistakenly installed (something concerning OpenCL) but nothing happens. The xorg.conf file seems to be okay.
Gnome now only starts in 2D mode and Unity refuses to work at all. how I might get my Intel card back working?

I have a Dell E6500 laptop (1280x800 screen), which I frequently dock. The dock as two Dell 1908FP 20" monitors connected by DVI. I can move between the laptop display and the twins by manually changing display configuration in NVIDIA X Server settings, but this is a pain requiring about 15 clicks each time.
I have tried using the "Save to X Configuration File" option in the Nvidia server settings, but this seems to screw everything up. I need to dynamically change between the setups... anyone have advice on getting that done? Can the xorg.conf file be configured to do it?My xorg.conf looks like this:

I have triplebuffer set up in the xorg.conf, i am using the squeeze Nvidia drivers (the ancient one), installed debian way.
In nvidia-settings, i have enabled all the entries of sync to vblank, but after i log in, if i go a glxgears, i get 1000+fps, then i start nvidia-settings, the screen flickers when it starts for some reason, resolution is still at native (1366x768), after starting and quitting nvidia-settings, starting glxgears made it 60fps.
How to i make sure sync to vblank is forced? i prefer it this way.

I've always used Debian with a single monitor and no need of proprietary drivers, because I usually don't do graphics or multimedia. Now I'm asked to set-up a machine with 3 nvidia video cards (770) and 4 monitors and everything went south. I started with just 2 monitors connected to 2 different video cards, not wanting to push my luck.
I installed a fresh Jessie and followed the instruction to install the nvidia drivers and tools from the Wiki. Everything went smooth. After reboot I executed (as root) nvidia-settings and I configured the two monitors to be one to the right to the other, with BaseMosaic option (at this point just one monitor was active) I saved the configuration to /etc/X11/xorg.conf , I even executed nvidia-xconfig as suggested, I rebooted and nothing happened, only one monitor was working, while the other -- looking again in the nvidia settings -- was still disabled.
I then tried with xinerama option and things are even worse, since now both monitors are black. I can login in one textual shell, but then I don't know what to do, since in my 10+ years of linux ... I never had to mess with X server. Is there a way to at least recover a working X without reinstalling everything?
