Im using a Vizio 22" 1080p LCD HDTV has a monitor for my Ubuntu server over HDMI. It works great, except I cannot see the top or bottom bar at any resolution. Id really like to get it working at 1920x1080. Ive been tinkering with the xorg.conf a bit to no avail.
View 5 RepliesI have noticed that, using nvidia's latest drivers, HDMi output to my 32" LCD (1920x1080) and totem or vlc, the video on my LCD gets a bit "choppy" when the image changes faster.. some bars start appearing on the moving parts of the image.. like the system is having trouble rendering the video. This doesn't happen on my laptop screen even when both displays are running at the same time.
Also, this problem doesn't appear in windows 7, everything works perfectly there with one odd thing... the picture gets "choppy" on the laptop screen when I'm running both at the same time. It's not that noticeable, but I can tell the difference between windows and ubuntu in quality and it's annoying me
I've got a new machine with an Nvidia GeForce 210 graphics card with HDMI output. I'm trying to get sound to go out that HDMI cable, but although the device shows up on lspci, I can't get it acknowledged by aplay -l, which lists the audio devices known to the audio driver.

I can't see how I'm going to select a device that the drivers think isn't there. how to make that device visible to the sound drivers? I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 with a 2.6.32 stock kernel. The Nvidia driver version is 195.36.24.

I finally decided to replace my monitor. I got a HANNspree HF225 with a native resolution of 1920x1080.
Alas, my Ubuntu 8.04 only allows me to select the 1400x1050 (50Hz) as the highest resolution.
I tried using gksudo displayconfig-gtk, to no avail. (yes, I also tried selecting Generic LCD display 1920x1080).
The strange thing is the monitor itself (via its OSD information) says it is running 1680x1050 (at H: 65.6KHz V: 60.3Hz).
Clearly, Ubuntu 8.04 can't see the real hardware capabilities of my system. My graphics card is "nVidia Corporation NV44 [GeForce 6200 LE] (rev a1)". I know it is capable of delivering the 1920x1680 because it has been previously driving 1920x1600 on a DELL P1110.

HDMI video out is fine, HDMI audio is a no go.
when I connected to the L32 HDTV over the HDMI cable, picture came up, and I thought great, plug & play. But the title bar and taskbar were missing and I soon learned that this cheap Vizio TV has a native resolution of 1366x768 and simply upscales and chops off what it considers "overscan" when you drive it at the proper 720p 1280x720. To add to the problems, it doesn't report the correct EDID modes (look at your /var/log/Xorg.0.log to see the probes or install and use the read-edid package) so 1366x768 isn't an option out of the box. I spent days mucking around with /etc/X11/xorg.conf with custom Modelines, strange options and copying confs from other threads, trying to get it working at 1366x768 or 1360x768 or 1368x768 (some variations seem to work for some people)
In the end, I didn't have to touch xorg.conf at all =) All I had to do was install the newer NVIDIA 195 drivers!!! Then you get the lovely Overscan Compensation slider in nvidia-settings, and all is well. First, you will have to apt-get remove the old drivers (probably -185 or -180). Install apt-show-versions for an easy way to do that. I had a bunch of junk, I just removed all packages that had nvidia-someversionnumber in the package name.

I have a Sony Vaio vpc-sb1v9e connected to a Asus22ti1 monitor. I have installed Debian 8.1 and the resolution is 1920x1080 with the hdmi port connected. The problem is that the desktop not fit the monitor size, and is more large and more higher than the monitor.

I recently bought a 37" Vizio M370NV HDTV and connected it to my Kubuntu 10.10 desktop.Currently my resolution is 1280x1024, so there is black bars on the side of my screen. I want my resolution to be 1920x1080, which is what the TV/monitor says is it's primary resolution. However, when I set that resolution in nvidia-settings, my screen scrolls up. By that I mean that my screen keeps moving up my monitor and appearing at the bottom.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've been working on this off and on for the last couple of days and I can't seem to get this working. I'm using the latest Catalyst Control Center (11.5) and I've also got xorg.conf set up for this resolution. If I switch the driver in xorg.conf to radeon from fglrx, I can get my 1920x1080 resolution (only on GNOME;the login screen and Fluxbox have a black bar on the left that cuts off about a quarter of the screen). When using fglrx and Catalyst Control Center, I can only get a maximum resolution of 1600x1200.

using any software(totem/vlc/mplayer/heck, i'd download a new one if it had this capability) make subtitles appear in the bottom black bar that exist due to video being 16:9 on my 4:3 monitor and not on top of the film leaving all of that black bar real-estate wasted?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an Nvidia GeForce 6150 integrated video card, and my TV is a Vizio VW32L. I installed the latest recommended driver from the Hardware Drivers. When I open the utility, I can select 1360x768, which is pretty close I thought. I selected this and hit apply, but it cuts off both the right and left side of the screen. For example, I can't see the Applications in the upper left corner. I went in to the TV menu and auto-adjusted, but it still cuts off both sides. I looked around the forums a bit and it sounds like I have to create a modeline. This is from my manual:

Can anybody verify these settings? Or am I going to screw up my TV? Also, I'm pretty new at this. Where in the xorg.conf file do I put this information?
I was looking at other threads and I think I have to add +HSync +Vsync to the end, because my manual says they're both positive, right?
i've got a mythbuntu 10.10 box connected to my tv; sometimes i want to use it to watch internet tv. owever, when i try to resize videos to full-screen, sometimes black bars intermittently flash across the entire screen. this does not happen when the video is in a window or on the web page, only when going into full-screen mode. unfortunately, on some of these sites, even the "large" in-page video selection is still too small to be comfortably watched from the couch.
i'd suspect it's something with flash, but a similar thing happens when i'm using skype inside a windows xp on vmware. black bars flashing across when in "full-screen" but just fine when zoomed up inside a window. and i don't think vmware video output is flash-based. so it may be something else entirely.
also, this doesn't happen on all internet video - i've only had it happen on video from nbc.com and nfl.com (i haven't really had the opportunity or reason to try many other sites yet), and it was only a little noticeable from the nfl.com but nearly unwatchable from nbc. yet if i go to videos, i have no trouble getting any of their videos running full-screen.
i have an integrated geforce 8200 graphics, and i'm running the nvidia proprietary drivers version 256. i'm not running 260 since its vdpau capability is questionable, and i need that for mythtv. i have a 64-bit system.
does anyone have any ideas regarding this? the fact that i'm getting consistently good results from videos yet consistently bad ones from the tv networks makes me wonder if it's something i'm even going to be able to fix.
I just installed Banshee v1.80 on Ubuntu 10.10 and was looking to import my music from my external HD. I pluged the HD in and copied all of the music in it to my music folder, (ALL 2,604 SONGS).I then went into banshee and set the folder for my music library to be /home/matt/Music, where i put THE 2,604 SONGS.Banshee started to scan the songs, all the way up through THE 2,604th. After it was finished i navigated to all music in the banshee side pane and there was only 394.
After some research i found that this was because only 394 of the songs actually had .mp3 or a similar extension at the end of the file name.I've spent the past hour trying to figure out how to either append the appropriate extension to all the files, or how to get banshee to see the files without any extension, to no avail.
Spice server/client configuration. I used remote viewer on debian jessie to connect to a guest virtual machine on kvm and everything works fine. It used a spice server / client and qxl. After I upgraded to debian stretch, I suddenly face issues with black bars in the remote client window. Those black bars appear only on the left and right side of the remote viewer window. Also in full screen mode the black bars sadly appear. Maybe the scaling mode is somehow disabled or my screen resolution of the host was wrong calculated related to that i can change the guest screen resolution but the spice remote client keeps its window size with the black bars. I was trying the last couple of days to resolve this issue, unfortunately without success.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI just recently installed Lenny 5.04 on my computer and when it comes to the desktop the top and bottom bars seem to be set for a lower resolution. They only go about a third of the way across the screen and if set to be at the bottom the bottom bar is only a third of the way down the screen. The logon window fits this format but most other things go full screen (games don't though).
What is it I need to change and as an aside how do I change the screen resolution if I want everything bigger (so I can read it with my old eyes)
I am using the vizio dual band and it is working quite well with one exception. i can not get it to access the usb network media.( hard drive plugged into usb port on router) it does recognize the the drive being there, it just will not allow me to access it. when i click on it nothing happens.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've just upgraded to Kubuntu 10.10 recently, and everything's working well, except that the screen seems to display less colors than it used to. It's very noticeable when looking at smooth gradients, since there are no smooth gradients anymore.
I'm using a laptop with a Radeon HD 5650 video card. The drivers seem to be working well, since I can run a 3D game like Nexuiz without any problems. The lack of colors isn't even very noticeable when playing games, but I can see it clearly in KDE... for example, the window background gradient isn't really a gradient now, just a few different shades of gray next to each other.I've looked around in KDE display settings and ATI settings, but there's absolutely nothing about the number of displayed colors there.
So, I've to machines running Ubuntu 10.10. One of them (a htpc) shares its local pulseaudio sinks, and I want the other (a laptop) to direct its audio to it.
So, on the htpc, I've ticked "Enable network access to local sound devices" in paprefs. On the laptop, I've ticked "Make discoverable PulseAudio network sound devices available locally".
The result is that, in padevchooser and pabrowser, the laptop sees the remote sinks. However in pavucontrol they are not visible. If I set one of the remote sinks as default in padevchooser, local applications (tried totem, vlc and spotify) cannot play audio.
I've been having trouble with rendering issues in Gnome for the past few weeks, running Sid on x86_64, Occasionally Blue and Grey horizontal bars show up, they go away partially if I scroll up or down, and the bars disappear completely if the window is resized. Select characters/letters will also occasionally become garbled, if I change the font in Gnome Tweak Tool it seems to temporarily fix the issue though.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI installed compiz with nvidia trouble is when I run compiz white bars or lines (bars) appear in open windows (icewease, gedit, etc.). They disappear after a few moment and reappear when scrolling a page. BTW everything works fine with metacity running as window manager.

I have the nvidia driver 173.14.09 installed. Running Debian Lenny stable x64 and turion x2 with a geforce 8200M G graphics card with dual screens. I first installed the debian repos compiz, then upgraded to the tuxfamily repo version. I installed the nvidia driver 190 from nvidia's website and that fixed it!
I am trying to hook my qosmio laptop into my vizio tv. I am using a VGA cable and I run mandriva linux 2009.1.
Unfortunately I have no luck from here. I rebooted my computer and for the first time it offered to run drakroam, but when I accepted, nothing happened.
I have a laptop running Debian stable. I have used xfce for a long time, but in an attempt to get away from needing to haul a mouse everywhere, I decided to migrate to xmonad (raw, with no DE), a tiling window manager that is extremely keyboard-friendly. I've also switched to conkeror (not konqueror, mind you), a very keyboard-friendly firefox-based browser. I have completely eliminated my need for a mouse on this laptop and have even disabled the touchpad by blacklisting the psmouse driver. There is still an annoying visible cursor sitting in the middle of the screen upon starting X. Is there anyway to (probably in the X config files) disable the visible cursor, or if not, have its default starting location be the bottom right corner (where it's least visible)?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am completely new to Ubuntu or any Linux based OS whatsoever, so excuse me if I sound retarded. I recently installed Xubuntu to an old laptop of mine and everything went fine except for the fact that I had to install a WiFi driver; I liked Xubuntu so much that I decided to go ahead and dual boot Ubuntu on my WIndows 7 machine. After I installed Ubuntu, I realized that I was stuck in 800x600 resolution and I was unable to run the resolution in 1920x1080 like I should be able to. I tried to uninstall and reinstall Ubuntu and I had the same thing happen. Most of the other help forums I had searched claimed that I needed to check my Xorg Config, but I don't know how to do that. Also, I get a "too many connections" message every time I start in Ubuntu; could this possibly be related?

Quick update: Ubuntu will not let me use the "extra visual effects" option for my desktop appearance. It stars searching for a driver then doesn't let me use the enhanced visuals. This leads me to believe that it's a driver issue. How can I tell which driver I am using in Ubuntu????

I have an HP 8510w laptop and I run ubuntu 10.04 out of an external harddrive.
I have no problem getting video over hdmi using the latest proprietary nvidia drivers however I cannot get sound through the HDMI cable.
I have read around without being able to find a solution.
Running "aplay -l" shows only my intel sound card and also there is no hdmi sound interface in the sound preferences (Only the normal output interface).
I am using the latest proprietary nvidia drivers (Believe it to be 1.95) and the graphics card is a Quadro FX 570.
how I can get sound out to work via the hdmi cable?
