I need to give a non-technical user very basic steps on how to copy/burn a folder to a blank CD. This is a senior citizen using a Ubuntu 10.04 desktop. That folder contains over 500 Mb of digital camera JPG pictures. What are the easiest instructions that I can give over the phone?

Eye of Gnome aka EOG does not open some jpgs, here's what happens.
With some jpgs only, most work fine!!
If you open one of the problematic jpg files by clicking on the jpg in Nautilus, EOG never fully opens, the process starts but the application's window does not get displayed - I then kill the process with kill -9 PID.
The same jpg opens in other viewers, EG. FSpot and OO Draw on Linux, and IrfanView on Windows.
If you start EOG from the App menu or the command line and drag a problematic jpg to it, the jpg is also not displayed, nothing happens. BUT if you start EOG with a working jpg and, once that is being shown, drag a problematic jpg from Nautilus to EOG's window then now the problematic jpg is displayed.
PS. Anyone know if there is an Eye of GNOME 2.32 (latest stable) deb package which I can download or if I can install EOG 2.32 from some other repositories? Aptitude and Synaptic have only v. 2.30.
How come I can't see the jpgs in Wikipedia with Firefox? I see other jpgs OK.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just installed KDE and I had 2 minor problems with Konqueror:
1) Every time I emptying the trash, I'm getting the error message: "The file or folder /...path here.../.Trash-1000/files/...filename here does not exist.". Seems like I had deleted this file, and before emptying the trash, I deleted somehow this file outside Debian installation (probably from a live cd). Other than that, trash is working OK. I'm just wondering if there's a way to get rid of the error message. (Of course emptying the trash from command line, doesn't brings any message).
2) Konqueror stopped displaying thumbnails of JPGs, PNGs etc. (with the exception of Photobook view, which is not very convenient for large number of photos).
I bypassed this problem, installing d3lphin (since dolphin is not available for lenny), and browsing the photo catalogs with it.
Let:Source directory is /x/y/z/src:
Destination is /x/y/z/dst,
Q: What is the option in zip command, which zip all updated or new picture files (*.jpg) from the source path to the destination + don't keep the original files -zipping while moving- ?
I have noticed i cannot get nemo to preview jpgs and pngs that are located on a network drive (smb).
I can preview these file types locally, but not in the network storage.
I have tried changing: Edit > Preferences > Preview
So that:
Show thumbnails: Always
Only for files smaller than: 1GB
This has had no effect, i still cannot preview network jpgs and pngs for some reason.
I found that setting the video output module to opengl works very well. The only problem now is that vlc keeps changing my setting back to "default" rather that "opengl" or "x11".How do I force it to save my settings?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI managed to half fix my earlier problem of being unable to clone my desktop monitor to my TV. I set the configuration to TwinView, and the resolution to the same as my desktop (Doh) and that seemed to at least get my desktop the way it used to be.
The problem now is the TV. It's cutting off a lot of pixels, and I can get it almost to fit if I enable flat panel scaling and set GPU Scaling Method to "Centered". However, when I restart the X server, it always returns to "Stretched". I've tried saving it from nvidia-settings (nothing seems to happen to the xorg.conf file,) and ala [URL] s have tried to put some version of

I have Ubuntu 9.10 dual booting with Windows7.My ext3 /home is mounted as F: in windows.I share a firefox profile between them so that when i am in Windows my firefox uses the same profile as it does when in Ubuntu.It all worked great until recently. I am unable to save files by right clicking and save as. In the config i am unable to set a directory to save to. It neer asks me where to save to. Just nothing happens. some off my book marks are all messed up as well, my rss feeds have the same post on some random website every time i log on and i have to manually refresh to get the correct feeds back. I am unable to delete the random bookmark.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm running Rythmbox 0.13.1 on Ubuntu 10.10 netbook edition.
My problem is that edits I make to tags sometimes don't save in Rythmbox. After I make the edit and click save it appears to have changed. (IE, the genre will change or the comment section will be different.) But if I reboot Rythmbox it has reverted to its previous state.
Not sure what's going on. Is this something I should fix or should I file a bug report and wait for the next version of Rythmbox?
I`ve just noticed that when I play from a flash video site in Firefox it doesn`t save it to /tmp.Anyone know where it goes now?

So I enable it as a separate x display, then save, but when I restart x, the settings didn't save. I save the config under under /etc/X11/xorg.conf. What am I doing wrong?

now i can select and use the new resolution - until next reboot. after an reboot 1280x720 is again not available. even if i work with sudo - the resolution isnt there....
Since I upgraded to 9.04 a while back I have had this annoying screen resolution issue. Every time I log into my Ubuntu system the screen resolution defaults to 1280x1024. My preferred desktop resolution is normally set at 1680x1050. So each time I log in I have to open the Nvidia control panel and manually set the screen resolution to 1680x1050. Even after logging out it will still go right back to 1280x1024 when I log back in.
But the funny this is I am almost positive the login screen resolution is 1680x1050 because the picture is crisp unlike the blurry and distorted picture at 1028x1024. I have tried everything from manually editing the x.org conf file to running the Nvidia control panel as root. Nothing saves my preferred resolution of 1680x1050. My Nvidia driver is version 190.42 and Ubuntu version is 9.04. The monitor is an ASUS VW192T+ which is detected by the Nvidia driver.
I use webcam with the streamer application. So, to record a video I have to put in terminal something like this:

I know I can use other applications but I have got problems with all except with this. This is really annoying because it is a delay job. So, I am wondering how can I make a script that the terminal will ask me to name the file or even better to ask where to put my file.
while i realize it's certainly taboo to download a lot of videos videos and similar without permission, and possibly illegal in some countries due to copyright, i have also been reading that the video is clearly buffered in the page casche, so technically is stored on your machine already, but is only stored in ram. how can i save it from my firefox page casche? some mitigating info is that i have poor web speeds, and an old machine, which is not using all of the 1gig of ram for some reason.
View 4 Replies View RelatedRunning Ubuntu 10.04 with an Acer wide monitor, 1600x900. The graphics card is a Gefoce 6200. When I run nvidia-settings I can select 1600-900 and it looks fine. I can "Save to X configuration file" and get no errors. However if I log out and back in, the resolution changes to 1360x768 which causes the tool bar at the top to be mostly somewhere to the left of and above the monitor. It makes life rather difficult when you can't get to the Applications and Places menus. I also tried nvidia-configure but it created essentially the same xorg.conf file.

1600x900 is the native mode of this monitor so the driver shouldn't be getting any errors if it trys to set that resolution.

Now, I am using Debian 8.1, and [Okular Version 0.20.2, Using KDE Development Platform 4.14.2].
However, it is OK when I used Okular in Debian 7.8.
Every time I reboot I have to reset the audio card and run alsaconf. These settings are never saved. How can I get Suse to save these settings?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI want to switch off 3d i.e. dri on my laptop to save power. There is a bug in the intel video driver that makes it generate excess wakeups and thus increase power consumption. I don't use 3d so this is very annoying.
I have tried modifying /etc/X11/xorg.conf to insert an "NODRI" option in the "Device" section and have commented out both of the "load dri" commands in the "Modules" section. No go. When I look in the xorg log, these changes are seen but not acted on. The system appears to have hardwired defaults set somewhere which are difficult to override. It appears to be a new issue because with Karmic one still had control with xorg.conf.
Just generally I don't like changes like this because it is not documented on the wiki where and how to change the defaults in Lucid. Linux was supposed to be easily configurable so IMHO this is a step backwards.
