View 3 RepliesI need to give a non-technical user very basic steps on how to copy/burn a folder to a blank CD. This is a senior citizen using a Ubuntu 10.04 desktop. That folder contains over 500 Mb of digital camera JPG pictures. What are the easiest instructions that I can give over the phone?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a weird problem with Firefox with the following scenario: When I view a picture from a website in the browser and the pictures gets deleted from the server (while I'm viewing it) - I can't save the picture to my hard drive. Firefox always tries to download the picture from the web-server although it's in the cache. Resulting in an image file which contains the HTTP 404 response from the server. *lol*
View 4 Replies View RelatedRunning slackware-current 32bit. I use digikam-1.7.0, kipi-plugins-1.7.0, and ufraw-0.17 which are all built using the sbo scripts from 13.1 repo. All the above work fine with lensfun-0.2.3 built from sbo, but trying to update lensfun to 0.2.5 causes segfaults in digiKam and ufraw.
Anyone else seen this and is there a fix? Seems to be caused by a change in lensfun between versions, but I think it's beyond me to sort on my own. Lensfun-0.2.5 seems to build fine without errors, but I believe there were warnings with respect to makedep. Digikam and ufraw locate the lensfun libraries during the build. Ufraw segfaults on startup and digikam segfaults when the auto lens correction tool is selected from the menu. I know none of these versions are officially supported either alone or in -current,
Fotoxx requires an updated libgtk2.0 from Lenny-backports (see backports.org), though ufraw built correctly using the older version in Lenny. Ufraw-batch is a suggested package in Fotoxx, which is why I added it...plus Fotoxx seems to be completely missing in Lenny. 32 bit debs only, with the source files and instructions included to easily rebuild your own debs (the safest choice). These are quick builds, and should be OK to build on even old machines or netbooks, for which Fotoxx is a great choice for image editing.[URL]..
View 7 Replies View RelatedUsing Ubuntu Lucid & Eye of GNOME 2.30.
Eye of Gnome aka EOG does not open some jpgs, here's what happens.
With some jpgs only, most work fine!!
If you open one of the problematic jpg files by clicking on the jpg in Nautilus, EOG never fully opens, the process starts but the application's window does not get displayed - I then kill the process with kill -9 PID.
The same jpg opens in other viewers, EG. FSpot and OO Draw on Linux, and IrfanView on Windows.
If you start EOG from the App menu or the command line and drag a problematic jpg to it, the jpg is also not displayed, nothing happens. BUT if you start EOG with a working jpg and, once that is being shown, drag a problematic jpg from Nautilus to EOG's window then now the problematic jpg is displayed.
PS. Anyone know if there is an Eye of GNOME 2.32 (latest stable) deb package which I can download or if I can install EOG 2.32 from some other repositories? Aptitude and Synaptic have only v. 2.30.
How come I can't see the jpgs in Wikipedia with Firefox? I see other jpgs OK.

I have noticed i cannot get nemo to preview jpgs and pngs that are located on a network drive (smb).
I can preview these file types locally, but not in the network storage.
I have tried changing: Edit > Preferences > Preview
So that:
Show thumbnails: Always
Only for files smaller than: 1GB
This has had no effect, i still cannot preview network jpgs and pngs for some reason.
I just installed KDE and I had 2 minor problems with Konqueror:
1) Every time I emptying the trash, I'm getting the error message: "The file or folder /...path here.../.Trash-1000/files/...filename here does not exist.". Seems like I had deleted this file, and before emptying the trash, I deleted somehow this file outside Debian installation (probably from a live cd). Other than that, trash is working OK. I'm just wondering if there's a way to get rid of the error message. (Of course emptying the trash from command line, doesn't brings any message).
2) Konqueror stopped displaying thumbnails of JPGs, PNGs etc. (with the exception of Photobook view, which is not very convenient for large number of photos).
I bypassed this problem, installing d3lphin (since dolphin is not available for lenny), and browsing the photo catalogs with it.
using the update maneger to update on ubuntu new linux images available 2.6.31-17 generic and after the download is complete both images exist in the grub menu should i remove them ? or just remove them from the boot menu ? and if so how could i do each.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am running Linux from a DVD, not installed. I am not good with installing software, but since the DVD cannot be corrupted, I am content to operate this way. Lately, I have been having problems that previously did not occur. When I try to click on the checkbox to get rid of emails, it doesn't register in most cases, or when it does, I am clicking multiple times so it registers twice, meaning it is unchecked again. Even more frustrating is some issues that are affecting my ability to update my business. I am trying to modify spreadsheets (text not calculations).
Whenever I try to click & drag to select something to change, it keeps jumping around to select only some of what I want, something else or some combination of the 2. When I try to copy and paste several fields from 1 column to another, everything from the several fields in the source column ends up together in the last field in the target column. I am also trying to download some images from a website. There is a single column of links to the images. I have to click on the link to get to the image in order to copy it, then back out to continue looking for more links to do the same.
My computer keeps jumping back 2 steps, then forward 2 steps, and sometimes I lose my place in that list. I could deal with it if it were a small number of links, but this is a list of probably close to 20,000 links. Again, i am operating off of a live DVD so this should not be corruptible, but this has just started happening, and has been an issue the last several sessions.
I know that ImageMagick's convert program can be used as follows to convert a collection of images -- say, in PNG format -- to a PDF file:
convert *png output.pdf
The problem with this is that each image is then stretched to fit on one page, whereas I would like to keep the original dimensions of the images and put as many as possible on one page in the PDF file before moving on to another page.
I am just spent half an hour hunting for a thing that should be totally available already:USB install images of Ubuntu, knoppix and all the others. And, the only good way are so far complicated tutorials where you extract the stuff from an CD image. Why??Hasn't everybody notices that CDs/DVDs are vanishing big time? That more and more systems don't have the readers anymore? Instead of following a 10 point instruction list, it would be nice to just be able to download a Ubuntu 8.10 or whatever USB image and be able to beam that DIRECTLY to a USB stick with a dd command.
Or am a missing something here? Does this exist? It should by no means be mariginal, considering how important USB stick in specific and flash memory in general have become.
I have Ubuntu 9.10 dual booting with Windows7.My ext3 /home is mounted as F: in windows.I share a firefox profile between them so that when i am in Windows my firefox uses the same profile as it does when in Ubuntu. It all worked great until recently. I am unable to save files by right clicking and save as. In the config i am unable to set a directory to save to. It neer asks me where to save to. Just nothing happens. some off my book marks are all messed up as well, my rss feeds have the same post on some random website every time i log on and i have to manually refresh to get the correct feeds back. I am unable to delete the random bookmark.
View 1 Replies View Relatedmy mediacenter is attached to an beamer with the optimal resolution of 1280*720 ubuntu 10.04 doesnt offer me this revolution (on my intel 915 graphis controller). this means i have to add this resolution to the possible resolutions. first i used cvt
Code:
cvt 1280 720 60
and got this result:
Quote:
# 1280x720 59.86 Hz (CVT 0.92M9) hsync: 44.77 kHz; pclk: 74.50 MHz
Modeline "1280x720_60.00" 74.50 1280 1344 1472 1664 720 723 728 748 -hsync +vsync
then i added this to xrandr
Code:
xrandr --verbose --newmode "1280x720" 74.50 1280 1344 1472 1664 720 723 728 748 -hsync +vsync
and
Code:
xrandr --verbose --addmode VGA1 1280x720
now i can select and use the new resolution - until next reboot. after an reboot 1280x720 is again not available. even if i work with sudo - the resolution isnt there....
Config a CentOS iptables.I issued some iptables rules.the rules were effective at once. Then, I came with a "iptables-save", but the "/etc/sysconfig/iptables" file hasn't been updated, it still loads the defaults rules with CentOS after reboot.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm working on a Soekris net4801 that is running an unknown distro of Linux. The kernel is 2.4.29, and iptables is v1.3.4.
I can't work out how to save the iptables. I searched the whole system for files/folders containing the name "iptables" and got 3 results:
/user/local/lib/iptables
/sbin/iptables
/lib/iptables
I've tried iptables save, iptables-save and iptables save active.
"iptables save" and "iptables save active" give me an invalid argument error. "iptables-save" isn't a valid command. "iptables --help" gives me a list of valid switches, none of which have to do with saving.
how I can save the iptables?
every time a new linux_image_generic install, my grub boot menu gets longer, any way to delete old images?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am configuring an ubuntu system for a friend of mine, he is Arab and he used to watch (with windows) the films on this site: [url]
I tried to open the site with firefox but I cannot see the image on that page, I see the cursor changing shape and clicking with right button in the properties I see they are gif images, furthermore clicking on the (not displayed) images should open a link to the film but instead a blank page opens with error.
i have alot of images that need to be printed into a pdf.
i am not aware of any software that allows me to do this. and searching on the web is bringing to to alot of propitiatory garbage.
aside from openoffice, what alternatives do i have?
i do not prefer open office because it doesn't let me utilize the whole page smack-off-the-bat.
if it pasted images to the size they were meant to be (the whole page) it would be good enough for me (but its not ) the images need to be in a particular order.
I've searched for answers in google, but get not i wanted. I wanted to prepare bootable iso from usb under Ubuntu. Fine, there's UNetBootin, dd if= of= command etc. But I am concerned and the specific type of iso images booting - AntiVirus rescue cd's.
Using UNetBootin i could only prepare thumb drive to boot Dr. Web Rescue CD, but neither Kaspersky Rescue Disk nor F-Secure Rescue CD couldn't be preapred well (NOTE that my BIOS can boot livecd from usb drive!). Using dd if= of= command also didn't worked, cause prepared thumb couldn't boot - get errors: "Missing operating system" or "Could not find kernel image: linux". Is it that i must install grub/lilo or syslinux on thumb, then edit .cfg file and then copy image, or what? I'm concerned only on AV Rescue Disk's, like: Kaspersky, F-Secure, GData Boot CD, BitDefender Rescue Disk etc. I've booted (and it worked) Symantec boot cd but it's based on WinPE and i had prepared thumb under Windows 7, so it's a completely different story.
I have Bootable USB Drive Assistant in my Ubuntu 9.04 but when i try to choose some of those cd's, i get error that "It isn't installable CD image, so application can't use it" or something like that. What application do i have to use then?
How do I cut jpg images in two parts?
If I want to e.g. slice an jpg vertically at so and so many pixels from the bottom.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 with an NVIDIA GeForce 6100 video adapter and my monitor seems to flicker whenever the the computer is processing. My system is up to date and I did install the recommended NVIDIA driver. The monitor isn't going blank or anything like that, it just seems like every once in a while different images will pop up for less than a second. Any ideas as to what the problem might be? I've attached a copy of the xorg.conf file as well:
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
DefaultDepth 24
EndSection
Section "Module"
Load "glx"
EndSection
[Code]...
I can't open images
Example: .img .dvd .ccd
Evolution won't show any images no matter what format. This really bugs me as at least 95% of my mail comes with loads of pictures. I'm running Ubuntu 9.10/Karmic Koala, anyone else have this problem with Karmic and solved it?
