Ubuntu :: Mounting Error - Throwing Warnings
Jan 15, 2011
I had Ubuntu 10.04 installed entirely on my 750 gig SATA drive. Yesterday I backed up my /home and installed a 200 gig drive and reinstalled using the 200 gig drive as / and swap. The 750 gig drive was all /home. Now, whenever I reboot it comes up saying it had serious errors mounting /home and I have to reboot again to get it to boot up. I never had this issue when the 750 gig drive was running the entire show. Has anyone else run into this? S.M.A.R.T. hasn't been throwing any warnings or errors so I am at a loss as to what "serious" errors Ubuntu could be running into.

I have some institutional sw that requires Sun JRE and is throwing the following error during install:
blah blah agent has been designed for the Java Runtime Environment provided by Sun Microsystems. It can be downloaded at no charge from url.
Your machine is currently using GNU Java Runtime Environment.Please modify the system environment to use Sun JRE.
If you have already downloaded the Sun Java make sure that it appears *before* GNU Java in the PATH environment variable.
I dl'ed and installed jre-6u13-linux-x64.bin, but how do I make sure it's first in the PATH? Because I still am unable to install the sw.

'Software update center' is throwing error. The error was uploaded to LaunchPad. Following is the like to it: [URL]
Following is the description on how it started misbehaving which I added to the bug description:
Was trying to install chromium, vlc & restricted-ubuntu-extras in my first restart after installing ubuntu 11.04. during installing chromium (which was the first on the list), Ubuntu Software Center stopped responding after downloading about 16MB. I restarted my machine. after which it said that chrome is installed. on installing restricted-ubuntu-extras, this error came.
Now I am not able to install anything using 'Software Update Center'.

I have an SD-VIA-1A2S PCI card with 2 sata ports (and one ATA-133 that isn't used). Two new Western Digital Caviar Green drives (WD10EARS 1TB) throw repeated errors in kern.log (removed date/time/host info for brevity):
[ 7.376475] ata2.00: exception Emask 0x12 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x1000500 action 0x6
[ 7.376480] ata2.00: BMDMA stat 0x5

I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 - 2.6.28-18-generic, though I have tried live cds of Ubuntu 9.10, Fedora 12 and OpenSUSE 11.2 - all running various 2.6.31 kernels - and all received the same error.Based on testing these drives and this card in two other machines and combos of connecting the drives directly to the motherboard or the add-in card, I'm relatively convinced that it's the VIA chipset that is the problem.Another computer that also has an onboard VIA SATA chipset (like the add-in card) produces the same errors when the drives are directly on that motherboard. I have been able to verify that the drives are perfectly good, and I tried everything I can think of in terms of swapping cables, psu isn't overloaded, etc.
The error happens on boot once or twice, after using fdisk on the drive once or twice, and constantly when attempting to sync a new mdadm raid 1 array created on the two drives.I'm completely open to buying a new PCI add-in card if someone can recommend one with 2 internal sata ports that works well in Debian/Ubuntu.

I'm trying to run an RSYNC job that keeps hanging without any error messages. When I started monitoring traffic with WireShark, I found that RSYNC runs without problems for a few minutes, then starts generating endless TCP ZeroWindow warnings and eventually dies with TCP Window Full error.Has anyone seen this before?PS: I should mention that I don't know much about remote system and I'm not using SSH, just pure RSYNC.

I am having permissions errors every time I try to mount a windows host. I have a linux server and all the windows computers can see that computer and its files, but we wanted to start backing up the linux machine to one of our other computers. so I tried to mount one of the computers. here is the sequence of events:
Code:
$mount -t cifs //192.168.1.194/Admin$ /mnt/Anita-comp
password: (I have no password so I left it blank)
Mount error (13): Permission Denied
I tried all sorts of passwords we use around the office and none of them worked.
I then decided to try mounting one of our other computers. this one looked like it worked fine. no error messages at all. (I left password blank) so I look in my filesystem and the mounted drive is not in the /mnt/Anita-comp file. What gives?

I'm not sure what when wrong since I have a few DVDs and they all play well in my normal DVD player, I later attempt to mount it in my Ubuntu 8.10 I'm presented with the following message:
DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.
May I know what does this really mean?Is there something in my computer that require a fix?

I want to block some ips permanently ie. even I as the root user cannot unblock these ips without having to format the whole system.
So i thought if some blocking software provided passwords for editing rules and I put a 'junk' password there and so that I can't delete the rules without the 'junk' password which I don't know.
So I examined iptables and I saw that it is a kernel module so there is no use of that since I can probably throw it away.
But the basic question is to block ips and gulp the key.

I suspect the disk manager pysdm that i had just installed today and it had crash during the previous session. The /etc/fstab file does not exist anymore and i cant rename the fstab.bak because the disk is read-only even for my root user

I have written a code in which i have used vectors:
vector< vector<double> > arr;
arr.resize(x,vector<double>(x,0));
x is a variable which is taken from a very beg text file > 64MB
first line of my code is
cout<<"
Wait Running...";
my code takes text file as an input, takes its data and generates an output text file....
Code is running fine for small data tried till x= 10
but while trying to run with large data ie x = 5000000 approx it is giving error
Even the first line of the code is not displayed. NOTE: variable is declared global but its size is defined in main.
The error that i am getting after approx 2-3 minutes is:
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::bad_alloc'
what(): std::bad_alloc
Wait Running...Aborted (core dumped)

I have installed Recoll 1.13.01 on my Ubuntu 10.04 box. I selected certain file directory trees to index and when I build the index using the gui it seems to work fine based on my limited testing. So far, so good.I planned to add a step to my nightly cleanup, backup and other housekeeping script to update the Recoll index. The command in question is recollindex While testing the command line indexing I found that an OLD password protected Windows zip file caused it to throw a bunch of errors. It appeared to continue. I located the offending file and as it was already backed up to DVD media and deleted it. I have also found a couple of other offending files which make me wonder about the robustness of this application.
The next case I had a file Session 12a.odt which for some reason was of 0 bytes - don't know why - perhaps I was just starting to write this document and never put anything in it.
