Software :: Recoll Indexing Throwing Strange Errors On Some Files

Nov 15, 2010

I have installed Recoll 1.13.01 on my Ubuntu 10.04 box. I selected certain file directory trees to index and when I build the index using the gui it seems to work fine based on my limited testing. So far, so good.I planned to add a step to my nightly cleanup, backup and other housekeeping script to update the Recoll index. The command in question is recollindex While testing the command line indexing I found that an OLD password protected Windows zip file caused it to throw a bunch of errors. It appeared to continue. I located the offending file and as it was already backed up to DVD media and deleted it. I have also found a couple of other offending files which make me wonder about the robustness of this application.

The next case I had a file Session 12a.odt which for some reason was of 0 bytes - don't know why - perhaps I was just starting to write this document and never put anything in it.

Hardware :: Strange Graphical Errors With Geforce 7600 GT

Jul 19, 2011

since I upgraded from Debian 5 to 6 there are strange red (and blue) stripes all over my GNOME desktop.I have experienced these graphical glitches in the past, but only in 3d-intense applications, never on the desktop. What is wrong with my setup? Does GNOME (my version is 2.30.2) make use of 3d acceleration features that were not used in past versions (that is, in the version that I had prior to upgrading)? If so, I may have a driver problem -- however, the glitches occur with the free Nvidia drivers as well as with the proprietary drivers (I tried version 195.36.31, which should be fairly new). I am beginning to suspect that my video card is broken.

OpenSUSE Network :: 11.4: Strange Nfs V4 - Invisible Files?

Mar 11, 2011

Yesterday I installed 11.4. First it did run very nice but now I am facing an odd problem: I am mounting on my new 11.4 box a folder via nfsv4 from an opensuse 11.2 server (updated to kernel 2.6.33.6).

I got some folders where the 11.4 cannot see files which are defenitely present on the server. They are completely invisible to the client! In one particular case I have eg. 108 files in the folder on the server, but the 11.4 box only sees 107. One is missing. It does not show up using ls and I also can't access it blindly using eg. cat. The file does not differ from all the others in that folder regarding permissions/ownership/acls etc. It is also not big (1728 bytes) nor is it a special file (link/socket etc.just a plain C header file). That single file is just not visible when mounting with nfsv4 on the 11.4 box. When mounting it with nfs3 instead the file is visible. But for obvious reasons I want to stick with nfsv4.

I restarted all nfs related daemons on both the server and the client a couple of times but it does not make any difference. I also cannot find any problems in any log files on the server or client up to now. I rebooted the client but not the server (I can't do that right now as it is in heavy production).

I do not see these problems with other opensuse boxes running 11.0/11.2 or 11.3 in my network. They can see/access these files quite nicely. This is really strange. Does any have a clue what is going on here or how I can narrow that problem down?

Ubuntu Security :: Finding Two Strange-looking Files On Windows Shared Folders?

Mar 30, 2011

Recently I've been finding two strange-looking files on my Windows shared folders! Their names are 'khy' and 'qffhtx.exe', they appear as hidden, and they're hard to delete!! especially the first one because it has no extension. I use Ubuntu 10.10, but I am worried because I also dual-boot Windows XP. Today I tried to open the .exe file in nautilus to see what is inside and I received the message "Unable to open archive", 'khy' is apparently an empty text file. Then I unmounted my /home partition so my files are out of the way, and I ran the .exe file using WINE,

Now I have a strange-looking applet on my top panel!! and it says "Script paused", also it says "Exit', and also Wine command prompt says something strange about "LockWindowUpdate", don't imagine it I'll post the screenshots so you can see it for yourselves. Also --and this is weird-- the virus apparently is trying to call a Windows process named csrcs.exe!! Again, I'll post the screenshots.

If this is a virus, then it's like a fish out of the water on my Ubuntu, it's probably trying to do something but it can't find its way around, it's kinda funny, but Im worried because I also dual-boot Windows XP, I'm having a hard time trying to remember the name KHY, it's a very weird acronym, it's the acronym of a disease, according to what I googled, i'm sure it's a virus!!! Anyway it's HARD to remember!!!

what can I do about this? How can I see the "script"? can Ubuntu kick its ***?how can I clean my Windows?

Ubuntu :: Mounting Error - Throwing Warnings

Jan 15, 2011

I had Ubuntu 10.04 installed entirely on my 750 gig SATA drive. Yesterday I backed up my /home and installed a 200 gig drive and reinstalled using the 200 gig drive as / and swap. The 750 gig drive was all /home. Now, whenever I reboot it comes up saying it had serious errors mounting /home and I have to reboot again to get it to boot up. I never had this issue when the 750 gig drive was running the entire show. Has anyone else run into this? S.M.A.R.T. hasn't been throwing any warnings or errors so I am at a loss as to what "serious" errors Ubuntu could be running into.

Security :: Blocking Ips Permanently And Throwing Away The Keys

Sep 22, 2010

I want to block some ips permanently ie. even I as the root user cannot unblock these ips without having to format the whole system.

So i thought if some blocking software provided passwords for editing rules and I put a 'junk' password there and so that I can't delete the rules without the 'junk' password which I don't know.

So I examined iptables and I saw that it is a kernel module so there is no use of that since I can probably throw it away.

But the basic question is to block ips and gulp the key.

Fedora :: How Does One Set ALSA Card Indexing

Feb 4, 2009

My situation: I have a desktop, with the following sound systems internal to it:HDA IntelSBLive! I also have a Creative Labs webcam connected via USB and another device (VR goggles) which have an audio component. My problem: a fair number of game applications use ALSA card#0 to play games, now pulse's ALSA module is at best lacking, so I don't use that for games. At this point I ahve pulse configured to always use HDA Intel for it's sink, what I would like to do is to configure it so that the SBLive! card is always ALSA card#0, regardless if the 2 USB audio-ish devices are installed. That way pulse can be running and I still get to play the games with native ALSA audio. The trick is how do I force by SBLive card to _ALWAYS_ be card#0 ?Update: there is an easy way, that I should have realized before, which allows for ALSA games to use the SBLive without having it at index 0, below is how to do it:

1) cat /proc/asound/cards
example output (mine):
0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel

[code]....

Ubuntu :: Beagle Not Indexing Filesystem?

Feb 4, 2010

I am having trouble with beagle. I havent used it for a while (probably since the upgrade to karmic). I have found now that it does not provide any results for any of my files, specifically my pdf files (I am doing a PhD and it is easier to search for journal articles by the author/title than it is to find them on the file system with 100s of files all over the place, I wish I was more organised!).

Do I need to install a sepparate backend to index pdfs?

I had a look in the log files and for all my pdfs (and some others) I get something like this:

Code:
20100202 11:10:42.8736 15579 Beagle DEBUG: Delaying add of file:///home/philip/Desktop/PBR Stuff/Lee 1986.pdf until FSQ comes across it

Ubuntu :: Networked Indexing Service

I need a fast way to search through all the files on the server with indexing without the hassle of having to VNC into it.

General :: SATA Drives Or Chipset Throwing DRDY Error And ICRC ABRT?

Mar 18, 2010

I have an SD-VIA-1A2S PCI card with 2 sata ports (and one ATA-133 that isn't used). Two new Western Digital Caviar Green drives (WD10EARS 1TB) throw repeated errors in kern.log (removed date/time/host info for brevity):

[ 7.376475] ata2.00: exception Emask 0x12 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x1000500 action 0x6
[ 7.376480] ata2.00: BMDMA stat 0x5
[ 7.376483] ata2: SError: { UnrecovData Proto TrStaTrns }[code]....

I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 - 2.6.28-18-generic, though I have tried live cds of Ubuntu 9.10, Fedora 12 and OpenSUSE 11.2 - all running various 2.6.31 kernels - and all received the same error.Based on testing these drives and this card in two other machines and combos of connecting the drives directly to the motherboard or the add-in card, I'm relatively convinced that it's the VIA chipset that is the problem.Another computer that also has an onboard VIA SATA chipset (like the add-in card) produces the same errors when the drives are directly on that motherboard. I have been able to verify that the drives are perfectly good, and I tried everything I can think of in terms of swapping cables, psu isn't overloaded, etc.

The error happens on boot once or twice, after using fdisk on the drive once or twice, and constantly when attempting to sync a new mdadm raid 1 array created on the two drives.I'm completely open to buying a new PCI add-in card if someone can recommend one with 2 internal sata ports that works well in Debian/Ubuntu.
