I am experiencing a strange problem. I have two vga monitors and a ATI Radeon HD 3300 embedded on my motherboard. My embedded graphics card has a vga and dvi output. When I plug my monitors in (one uses a dvi to vga dongle) only the one with out the dongle gets a signal. I can swap which monitor uses the dongle and still only the one that does not use the dongle gets a signal (both monitors work, only if they are not using a dongle). Both Ubuntu and Windows are having trouble displaying video, but no trouble detecting the monitors (display settings show both monitors but do not tell me good resolutions for them). My friend has a different dvi to vga dongle, his only has about half of the dvi pins while mine has all the pins. Could the problem be that my dongle has all the dvi pins

Last night I was able to set up my server so that I can just connect vnc. I even was able to be connected at the log on screen so I could select which user I wanted to log in at. For some reason today, I have to have the monitor plugged in all the until the logon screen comes up before vnc will connect. Once the logon screen is up, I then can connect via vnc & select which user I want to logon as. It's odd because it worked last nigh, but today - Nope nada, it doesn't work & I can't explain why. I did clean up - Removing some applications I don't need on my server. (I'm hoping that isn't the problem) It's odd as well because I don't have to be logged on as a user to connect via vnc, I just have to wait until the logon screen is available...Then I can unplugged the monitor & logon.

I have recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 on my PC with these configuration:CPU: AMD Athlon 7750 Black EditionRAM: 2GB 1066 MHzVGA: ATI Radeon HD 3200 (on AMD 780G)After I installed Natty Narwhal I felt that my CPU runs at the highest clock all the time (2.7GHz), even if I don't have any program run. I tried all settings for AMD Cool'n'Quiet from mainboard BIOS, but nothing's changed. I installed "CPU Frequency Scaling Monitor" to manually change CPU clock. It recognizes two clock for my CPU, 2.7GHz and 1.35Ghz plus 4 other options; Conservative, Ondemand, Performance and Powersave but the CPU indicator doesn't change on every option!

I have a Intel DQ35JOE motherboard with integrated video (DVI and VGA). I've been running Ubuntu 8.10 for at least a year with both monitors working fine. One is a Hanns-G 27.5 inch, the other (VGA) is an older AOC 19". They were both plugged into the motherboard video plugs (it had both), and they worked side-by-side (not mirrored) just fine on 8.10.Last night I decided to go ahead and take the plunge and upgrade to the latest, because I run 9.10 on my laptop and love a lot of the new stuff. The reason I hadn't upgraded was because I feared the potential problems - which I ran into head-on this time.
Upgrade to 9.04 seemed to go fine. Then I immediately did the upgrade to 9.10. Unfortunately, my screens came up upside down and backwards. And the mouse moved the wrong way. And to click on something in the top left of the screen, I had to have my mouse on the bottom right of the screen.Well, I also received a warning that my primary hard disk was failing. So, I decided to just do a clean install of 9.10 on a new disk that I had handy - hoping it would be better if it was a clean install rather than an upgrade.
Now I can't get dual monitor to work at all, and Ubuntu seems to not recognize my monitors. If I just plug one monitor in, it works. But it won't let me adjust resolution above 1280x1024 (my big one is 1920x1200). And it says "unknown" instead of identifying the monitor. Also - at one point both monitors were appearing (but "unknown"), but mirrored, and whenever I uncheck "mirror screens" and click apply, the screen just goes black with a frozen cursor - and I can't even do CTRL-ALT-F6 to get to a terminal - it just freezes the whole computer.

I am using Open Suse 11.2 on my HP DV6 notebook. I am connecting my television to the notebook with a HDMI cable and the television is unable to find any signal. Am I missing anything here? Shouldn't it be simply connecting the HDMI cable finding the source channel on the television and then I get sound and picture..

I'm just a newbie to this operating system. Even though I'm having some trouble, it still seems more sensible to me than Windows. I'd like to continue to use it, but I'd like to know why it doesn't work for me sometimes, and I'd like to see if I can't make it work better for me.
After I upgraded to 11.04 I've had a host of problems. My USB ports have intermittant trouble recognizing storage devices. My USB ports also have intermittant trouble recognizing my USB WiFi device. The VLC player will crash the Gnome Desktop whenever I use it. I still haven't figured it out.
I'm interested in the following question:
Why can't software and hardware that already works be insured to continue to work after an upgrade?

I had been running Slackware64 13 almost since it came out and recently upgraded to Slackware64 13.1.Every thing looked to be working well until I tried to burn a DVD with k3B. It starts the burn process but then dies and says that "cdrecord has no permission to open the device".I was able to put in a DVD+RW and erase it without a problem, but when trying to burn to a DVD-R it stops and gives me the error.I checked cdrecord and it is owned by root in the root group.

I just upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10. When I restarted, I admired the new login menu, then went to Firefox. I noticed that my wireless didn't work (it did in 9.04) Thinking I'd just need to reinstall the drivers, I plugged in the computer to a working Ethernet outlet with a working cord. I noticed that Ubuntu didn't tell me that Auto eth0 was connected. It didn't tell me anything. And then I went to Google and realized that the wired connection didn't work either. Then I came here on an iPod Touch and you know the rest.
Edit: And other devices work too on the network.

After I finished upgrading Xubuntu from 9.10 to 10.04, I discovered that my keyboard stopped working in X Server. The upgrade process was running smoothly until the last moment, when it produced some error, which I, unfortunately, did not write down. Anyway, the upgrade has completed; uname shows kernel version 2.6.32-31. Now the keyboard works fine if I select a recovery mode at startup, but if I type 'start gdm' from the shell or select the default option in GRUB while booting, the keyboard becomes unavailable right from the login screen. I can log on using the virtual keyboard, but that's all I can do; the keyboard is still dead.

This weekend I did a distribution upgrade to Karmic, but it didn't go very well. Upon reboot, I see a white ubuntu logo on a black screen. I hear the speakers pop, and the screen flashes several times, sorta like the blank screen is maybe changing video modes. After a while I see what I think is garbled text but is unreadable, and it looks like I can log on even though I can't read anything. Now, booting into recovery mode gets me to a readable prompt. There are no upgrades to apply. Typing gdm from here gets me to the desktop just fine. Also when booting, if I choose an earlier kernel the system boots fine also, except the touchpad doesn't work.

After the upgrade, I've noticed a problem I haven't had before - hibernating worked fine to the last. The problem is, although the system correctly hibernates, it makes no attempt to "wake" from hibernation when I power it up - it boots normally, and with fsck-ing like it was powered off without proper shutdown (understandably). I don't know why it happens, and I've skimmed the logs, but noticed nothing special. What could be the problem? What could I try? Which log should help someone find that out?

Just before Lucid was released, I installed karmic on a vanilla VM in 64-bit mode, and all was good. Did a desktop setup and afterwards installed Eclipse, and I was happy: A new system for coding on-the-go! Now, after upgrading to Lucid with do-release-upgrade -d, I can no longer enter my password on X login. The keyboard just doesn't work for some reason. When I enable the onscreen keyboard, and click my password, I can login. The strange thing is that my keyboard works like a charm after I've logged into my X session?

I have a small problem with lmsensors and snmp since I upgraded my small server from 9.10 to 10.04. I use cacti to monitor my servers usage, disk space as well as temps and fans.
This was running very fine before the upgrade, but now I don't get data anymore from lmsensors. It seems that SNMP doesn't give this information as before. (Cacti log says: "No sensor data was returned from SNMP")
sensors give the following output:
Code:
w83627dhg-isa-0290
Adapter: ISA adapter
Vcore: +1.12 V (min = +0.00 V, max = +1.74 V)
AVCC: +3.41 V (min = +2.98 V, max = +3.63 V)

I've just upgraded my web/tv setup from 9.10 to lucid and everything seems to be working apart from my infra red remote control. The remote was working fine in 9.10 and was used to control mythtv-frontend however after the upgrade the remote appears to be controlling ubuntu natively, i.e. right left up and down control what is selected on the desktop where as previously the remote was set to only work within mythtv. Whilst native support for my remote control is muchly appreciated(if that is what this is) where can I configure the controls so that it is usable again?

First time trying this. After trying to upgrade Mozilla, I received a warning that my GTK+ library needed to be upgraded from 2.8 to 2.10 or newer.
In trying to upgrade my GTK+ library following these instructions, I got to the ./configure step but then received the warning bash: ./configure: No such file or directory.
I've got an EEE PC, running Linux (i686, I believe). I'm not sure what additional information to provide.

I tried to upgrade to Leonidas from Cambridge, but didn't have enough space on the partition /, so I soft linked /var/cache/yum (or whatever) to a larger partition, but now the upgrade does not find the subdirectory called preupdate (it's there in the linked dir, checked). Is there any more sofisticated way around than changing parition sizes and copying and stuff?

I installed Karmic on an older PC I had laying around, and the only trouble I am having is with screen resolution. It uses an old ATI chipset (onboard) for video, and it doesn't seem to do EDID correctly, so I can't display anything higher than 800x600. I have tried creating an xorg.conf, but it's still not working. How can I tell Xorg to ignore the fact it can't detect a widescreen monitor and display something larger than 800x600? I noticed the log says the sync's are out of range, but I am not sure how to fix it.
Here is my current xorg.conf.
Code:
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "X.org Configured"
Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
EndSection
[Code]....

I am having problems getting my external monitor to work. When I plug in the monitor, both the laptop screen and the external monitor go black. When I unplug the monitor, the laptop screen works again.
When I startup with the external monitor plugged in, neither screen works or teh computer hangs or something.
I have had the external monitor going on a couple of occasions. I did manage to configure my monitors through System Settings > Display. I turned off the laptop monitor as I just want to use the external. But after rebooting, things didn't work.
I have a Thinkpad E420, Fedora 15
