Before ubuntu can even boot I get this on my monitor Out of range set to 1280x1080 60Hz I get that a grub. I'm not even sure if ubuntu can even boot because my monitor won't let me see anything. I'm using the driver off the nvidia website, not the stock one that came with ubuntu.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am using Open Suse 11.2 on my HP DV6 notebook. I am connecting my television to the notebook with a HDMI cable and the television is unable to find any signal. Am I missing anything here? Shouldn't it be simply connecting the HDMI cable finding the source channel on the television and then I get sound and picture..
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am experiencing a strange problem. I have two vga monitors and a ATI Radeon HD 3300 embedded on my motherboard. My embedded graphics card has a vga and dvi output. When I plug my monitors in (one uses a dvi to vga dongle) only the one with out the dongle gets a signal. I can swap which monitor uses the dongle and still only the one that does not use the dongle gets a signal (both monitors work, only if they are not using a dongle). Both Ubuntu and Windows are having trouble displaying video, but no trouble detecting the monitors (display settings show both monitors but do not tell me good resolutions for them). My friend has a different dvi to vga dongle, his only has about half of the dvi pins while mine has all the pins. Could the problem be that my dongle has all the dvi pins
View 5 Replies View RelatedLast night I was able to set up my server so that I can just connect vnc. I even was able to be connected at the log on screen so I could select which user I wanted to log in at. For some reason today, I have to have the monitor plugged in all the until the logon screen comes up before vnc will connect. Once the logon screen is up, I then can connect via vnc & select which user I want to logon as. It's odd because it worked last nigh, but today - Nope nada, it doesn't work & I can't explain why. I did clean up - Removing some applications I don't need on my server. (I'm hoping that isn't the problem) It's odd as well because I don't have to be logged on as a user to connect via vnc, I just have to wait until the logon screen is available...Then I can unplugged the monitor & logon.

I have recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 on my PC with these configuration:CPU: AMD Athlon 7750 Black EditionRAM: 2GB 1066 MHzVGA: ATI Radeon HD 3200 (on AMD 780G)After I installed Natty Narwhal I felt that my CPU runs at the highest clock all the time (2.7GHz), even if I don't have any program run. I tried all settings for AMD Cool'n'Quiet from mainboard BIOS, but nothing's changed. I installed "CPU Frequency Scaling Monitor" to manually change CPU clock. It recognizes two clock for my CPU, 2.7GHz and 1.35Ghz plus 4 other options; Conservative, Ondemand, Performance and Powersave but the CPU indicator doesn't change on every option!

View 9 Replies View RelatedI installed Karmic on an older PC I had laying around, and the only trouble I am having is with screen resolution. It uses an old ATI chipset (onboard) for video, and it doesn't seem to do EDID correctly, so I can't display anything higher than 800x600. I have tried creating an xorg.conf, but it's still not working. How can I tell Xorg to ignore the fact it can't detect a widescreen monitor and display something larger than 800x600? I noticed the log says the sync's are out of range, but I am not sure how to fix it.
Here is my current xorg.conf.

InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am having problems getting my external monitor to work. When I plug in the monitor, both the laptop screen and the external monitor go black. When I unplug the monitor, the laptop screen works again.
When I startup with the external monitor plugged in, neither screen works or teh computer hangs or something.
I have had the external monitor going on a couple of occasions. I did manage to configure my monitors through System Settings > Display. I turned off the laptop monitor as I just want to use the external. But after rebooting, things didn't work.
I have a Thinkpad E420, Fedora 15
I am almost tempted to go back to an old slackware to try this. Anyway, I found a circuit (with just a few resistors) that allows vga output to go to composite input. To my amazement it actually works and it is very clear, but has a double screen. I am told, to fix it you need to change the horizontal sync and or refresh rate for the card. (17 instead of 35). How would I do this in xorg.conf?

View 2 Replies View Relatedyesterday I was trying to install Puppy Lucid 5.2 on a old PC (PII 533mhz 265mb RAM). First of all I have launched the live cd, then set up language, time zone and keyboard... at this point pc stopped working and stay blocked on the desktop screen with no possibility to move pointer or use keyboard. Is it possible that hardware is too old to work with Puppy Lucid 5.2? May I have to try with a lighter OS (which one?)?

If I do the following, if the URL is a redirect, it doesn't work
rpm -ivh http://path/to/rpm
I have to use wget http://path/to/rpm which resolves the redirect and downloads the file, then run rpm on that file.
More for my knowledge of bash than anything else, would there be a way to redirect the file downloaded from wget into the rpm (something like redirection or pipes or something), so that they could be combined into one command and you wouldn't explicitly save the file first.
Something like... rpm -ivh << wget http://path/to/rpm
I have one more question, and that is whether there is a command in linux, such as wget, that would let me pass it a URL and output the redirected-to URL if the argument.
e.g. ('wget --someflag http://orig/url' would output 'http://url-after-redirects-followed')
I just installed Fedora 12 and after downloading and running the Java Sound Demo I get exceptions. If I run just a vanilla Java program that plays a .wav file it runs silently with no sound and no exceptions.
Every other app seems to play sound. I also took some advice from this thread in the Ubuntu forums which almost seemed to work. (Installing aoss got rid of the initial exceptions in the sound demo but I still hear nothing when I play.) I'm getting frustrated by the individual hoops I have to go through to eek sound out of my speakers when running Java apps on Linux platforms!
I tried using a command likecp `ls ~/temp/*.xyz | head -1` ./But that does not work. If I echo the value of command inside back ticks and put it manually in cp command it works.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI used unetbootin to make a bootable USB key (a BT4 persistant live cd)
But it wors only on a few machines. (only 1 out of 6 i tried) Most of the time boot sequence get stuck on a blinking prompt cursor.
Ex:
Attempting Boot From Floppy Drive (A:)
Attempting Boot From USB Device
_ <-- stuck...
Then boot on HDD
Is it do to the usb key or machines that do not load mbr the same way?
Edit: the stick is formated with MBR have 2 partitions. The first is FAT32 and active, second is ext3
PCs i have tested can boot on USB (at leat you can select a USB device for Boot)
I have this old kUbuntu box here, which used to be 8.04. For some reason after a bunch of upgrades and other unrelated changes sound doesn't work any more.
Sound works on this machine when rebooting to Windows, so it's not hardware problem. It used to work on Linux on this machine before, so it's not weird hardware. (lspci says 00:10.1 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP51 High Definition Audio (rev a2)) This problem persists across resets. alsamixer etc. claims sound is not muted, and volume is high. it's the same no matter which program I try to play some sounds (or which -ao for mplayer, default seems to be pulse) nothing obvious shows up in system settings
Do I really need to reinstall the system to fix that, or is there something simple I'm missing?
I've got a Compaq MX 11800 keyboard that has a ball (used as a mouse). The ball works fine in Ubuntu and Windows, but does not work in Debian or Fedora.
I don't know where to start troubleshooting this issue. Any help is appreciated.
Here's a picture of the thing: [url]
you have an onboard soundcard that you have or may not have disabled in the BIOS, and you intend to use headphones with a USB sound card with headphone and microphone jacks (or no mic jack, it doesn't matter), but you notice that the headphones are detected. Alsamixer provides an interface to control the volume, etc etc, but still the headphones do not work..In my case, the module snd_hda_intel was being loaded for my onboard soundcard that I had disabled in the BIOS before booting the computer for the first time, and even though I tried to "activate" the USB headset in alsamixer, I still couldn't get the headset to work.
Solution as a trial: Open a terminal, and look to the code section for what you need to type.A big missing key to my puzzle is how to simply restart and/or reload a module so that it isn't necessary to unplug and plug back in the USB device. Can't I just re-discover the USB devices? (or other such hardware, such as a PCI card, or otherwise inaccessible component?)
I'm getting some trouble with Wake on Lan. The main question is: when I shutdown a PC through Windows, the WOL works well, but it doesn't happen when I shutdwon the same PC through Linux. It happens in all of my PCs here in the company.
