OpenSUSE Network :: Error On Updating / Installing Software - Connection Failed

Oct 21, 2010

I had this issue with Fedora Core 13, so I switched my laptop back to OpenSuse and continued to have the problem. I can do a host lookup for software.opensuse.com and I get a correct response ...
Code:
linux-edxs:/etc # host software.opensuse.org
software.opensuse.org has address 195.135.221.150
linux-edxs:/etc # host download.opensuse.org
download.opensuse.org has address 195.135.221.134

Firefox works. Thunderbird finds my mail servers just fine. SSH works. But then when I try to do anything involving software updates or installation, I get ...
Code:
linux-edxs:/etc # zypper update
Retrieving repository 'Updates for openSUSE 11.3 11.3-1.82' metadata []
Download (curl) error for '[URL]':
Error code: Connection failed
Error message: Couldn't resolve host 'download.opensuse.org'

I've seen others here post queries about this, and I'll tell you what it was in my case: our DSL modem's DHCP server returns its own IPV4 address as the DNS server. When I looked at /etc/resolve.conf, I saw "nameserver: 192.168.50.254" on the last line -- the IPV4 address of our DSL modem. I manually inserted "nameserver" lines for our ISP's two actual DNS servers, and everything magically started working. Why this should confuse some software under Linux, but not other software, is a mystery. It also seems to be Gnome-specific (I didn't have this problem with OpenSuse 11.3 and KDE 4).

Ask if they're using Gnome, and ask them to check resolve.conf. A lot of DSL modems and home/small office routers return their own IP address (i.e., the same as the gateway address) for the DNS server on a DHCP query. The solution is to manually edit resolve.conf and put in your ISP's DNS server addresses manually. Incidentally, just my opinion, but Network Manager needs to make this an option. Under Windows, for example, you can select "automatically assign DNS" or you can enter them manually, even if you're using DHCP. It'd be nice if Network Manager permitted that.

Ubuntu :: Install Latest Java Version - Java SE 6 Update 24?

Feb 18, 2011

If you are interested, Java SE 6 Update 24 is available. The Check Java Version link in my signature will tell you if you are up to date or not. The Update Java Version link in my signature will tell you how to obtain and install the latest version. The 32 bit version install directions are on the left side of that page and the 64 bit instructions are on the right side.

Just remember to remove the current version before installing the new one as it says in the instructions. The remove instructions are below the install instructions. Also, in Step 9 - "Now you'll want to tell the system, that there's a new Java version available." See the note below it that says if you get an error upon entering the command once, enter it a second time. I have to do that and sometimes forget. Just thought I would mention that. These instructions are already setup for version 6 update 24, but they can be modified for any update and they will work. I have been using these instructions for a couple of years and they work.

OpenSUSE :: Error: Connection To Server Failed - (version 11.0)

May 12, 2009

I have just upgraded my openSUSE installation from 11.0 to 11.1 which everything is working great. Kudos to the development team and all those involved! I really like 11.1. One problem I have encountered is I cannot get clusterssh working. It appears to install just fine but whenever I try to execute like I did in 11.0 I get the following error: Connection to server failed -- (version 11.0) No protocol specified at /usr/local/bin/cssh line 1883

I tried to find a version for 11.1, rpm version that is, but no luck. I even download the source from SourceForge and still nada, same error. Not sure what is going on and looking for some assistance cause I really need clusterssh or another means to connect to several other machines to conduct changes.

General :: Installing/updating Java RE On Ubuntu?

Jan 30, 2010

Linux (Ubuntu) is not providing any updates for Java Runtime Environment! According to what I find on my computer, I have Java build 1.6.0_15-b03. Ubuntu Software Center is indicating 6-15-1 (sun-java6-bin). I have manually downloaded JRE 6u17 and 6u18 from Sun. However, I have not - as yet - attempted to install/update Java myself. First, why isn't Linux providing us end-users with the updates as they are published? I thought that, for the sake of ensuring "STUFF" is up-to-date and SECURITY reasons, that the (or some other place) would be providing updates as they occur. I have just started Ubuntu - my ranking - "kindergarden at best"! I still have not been able get the "handle" on the "command line (codes)" structure and usage. I am so use to the Windows way of installing, updating, and upgrading software that Linux (Ubuntu) is causing quite a bit of consternation; just plain frustrating and confusing! I have been trying, and seeing, so-called instructions of how to install/update Java but there are just too many "assumptions" being interposed by the author(s). I just wish, and want, straight forward, step-by-step instructions in the "how to" department - written in plain language, for the complete novice (brand new to Linux). So, here's my question ... how do I manually update/upgrade (or install) Java RE on Ubuntu? Do I have to remove, add, change anything? I'm sure that there are others in the Linux world that are in need of some straight forward assistance. I want to continue using my Ubuntu and honestly, would like to be more proficient in it's use. But in the meantime.

CentOS 5 :: How To Keep Yum From Updating OS Version

Aug 3, 2009

My server's manufaturer (supermicro) only provides RAID drivers for certain RHEL (CentOS) releases, 4.4, 5.2 and 5.9 are presently available. An accidental yum update recently took the server from CentOS 4.4 to 4.7, and abandoned the RAID driver. My choces are to reload 4.4 or go to 5.2. Since I will probably do the latter, is there a way to have yum just update within the distro, and not the distro version? Can someone ID the rpms I could exclude to be sure that the OS version remains static?

CentOS 5 :: Updating MySQL To The Latest Version?

Feb 4, 2010

I have CentOS 5.4 installed with lighty and MySQL installed via yum. not a problem. The issue become when I'm having problem with the current mysql that I installed via yum which I believe its currently at version 5.1.42-2. So I'd like to upgrade it to the latest available version of mysql. Except I can't figure out whether to download the generic glibc32 version or just get the RHEL5 version or find the mysql enterprise version somewhere. So, not knowing what I'm doing, I downloaded the RHEL5 version since it's closer to CentOS 5.4. Except for whatever reason the mysqli is not installed or configured properly and I'm not sure how to fix it.

Any suggestion? Everything was working nicely when I used yum to install, except the problem with the version of mysql that's offered in the repository. So I'd like to request a suggestion on how to either somehow upgrade mysql using yum and there's a different repository that I didn't know, or perhaps download a proper latest and greatest mysql, install and have it configured so that mysqli work properly.

Is it better to just install over an older version or remove the older version, and then install the new version clean

If you remove and older version of an application first, what is the best method for doing this and removing any residual files etc that might be left on your system?

Ubuntu :: How To Rollback Java Version

Nov 23, 2010

I play this game called Minecraft, and I'd like to run the server package as well, but the server is laggy as hell. I did my research, and some people were saying that one of the problems was the Java version. They recommended rolling back specifically to 1.6.0_13, but they didn't say how. So I Googled for a tutorial on how to roll back Java in Ubuntu, and got nothing. So here I am.

I also learned that you can add some extra code into a Java run command to make it run off of a specified version, so I added this to the original command I have to run my server

Code:
-version:1.6.0_13 and got "Unable to locate JRE meeting specification '1.6.0_13'". So now I'm thinking that Ubuntu didn't retain any previous versions of Java. My second question would be, where does Ubuntu keep it's versions of Java, cause I'd just download that version of Java, put it where Ubuntu keeps it, then run that command again and hope it works.
