How can I prevent Firefox 5 from automatically updating itself to a new version? The relevant option is mission on the Update tab in Preferences.
View 5 RepliesI recently deleted all my Software Sources that were under "Other Software" and all my "Authentication" because Mint kept updating my xulrunner to a new version which would disable Firefox-Smooth-Scaling.Therefore I deleted all my Software Sources that were under "Other Software" and Authentication, and forced Mint to only install the xulrunner which uses Firefox-Smooth-Scaling. Unfortunately, after I deleted the software sources and authentication, now I can't update my system properly and get error messages that keys are missing. I added some software sources back the "Other Software" (someone responded to a previous post of mine on which ones to add), and under the "Authentication" window I tried hitting "Restore Defaults", but it only added two keys. These are screenshots of my Software Sources windows.

They are NOT listed in my Startup Applications under preferences. For example, pidgin. Pidgin automatically starts at each login even though it is not in the startup apps nor can I find an option in pidgin itself. Tomboy is another. I always get an error that tomboy cannot be added to my panel when I restart. The error in the tomboy panel log is that tomboy is already running. Does ubuntu have a hidden "start up" folder like Windows does in the start menu? Where can I clear this file/folder?

Is there any way I can prevent OpenOffice automatically installing when using the Alternate disc? I want to install a different package (LibreOffice 3.3) without having to uninstall Ubuntu's OpenOffice.
I have an NTFS partition problem which prevents me from installing openSUSE on my desktop computer. It's not a trouble with installation, it's a security issue relating to NTFS.I have a desktop running XP exclusive, but wish to also go dual boot but can not because I have created a NTFS partitoin on my HD wich I don't wish others to know about.After booting window$, I am able to successfully unmount the partition using Diskpart, which is a command line program within that OS. Once unmounted, it is effectively hidden from those who might be snooping until I manually remount it. Essentially I remove the drive letter which makes it inaccessible to Windows.
(Yes I know a person with proper skills can easily find it, but that's not applicable in my case for those who would look)If I install openSUSE which I desperately desire, it will automatically locate and mount the NTFS partition I wish to hide, making it easily accessible to anyone booted up in SUSE.Changing the attributes to the associated files to "hidden" is not an option. I need that secret partion to remain unknown.How can I hide, deny access to, or prevent that particular NTFS partition from automatically being mounted in Suse? Once that security issue is resolved I look forward to using Suse again, like the other people do in our home.
I'm running Linux Mint 9 with Gnome.
I don't want my wireless network card to be automatically enabled in Network Manager when I start my computer. I keep setting it to disabled in Network Manager but when I reboot Network Manager has re-enabled it again.
Is there some way of starting with wireless disabled until I tell Network Manager to enable it?
Here is my GRUB boot menu and the older versions of Ubuntu still appear there. It also uses very much disk space. How can i uninstall the old versions and set Ubuntu to do it automatically when i update it?

I am looking for an iso file, and I am trying to run this off of a live CD for now. So I want a light version of Linux, probably LXDE, or if not, then probably XFCE. But I need a new version of Firefox and OpenOffice included.
Because, I tried burning the customizable NimbleX @ custom.nimblex.net . Pretty good, except it uses Firefox 2, and Open Office 2.3, which are outdated.
And I tried Mint XFCE, which might have been pretty good too, but it had some issue of blanking and requiring relogin after I opened hotmail frequently (user id: mint, password: blank).
The web browser and the word processing program are the most important and essential applications to me.
So are there any Linux versions in LXDE on LiveCD that include newer versions of Firefox (or at least another good browser) and Open Office (oo seems better than abi)? (Again, if no LXDE, perhaps XFCE?)
I just want to download a good version in an iso file, and burn it to a CD and get to work. Like I said the web browser and the word processing program are all important.
So really, what iso/LiveCD versions are the fastest for running on an older system, and yet have the newest browser and word processor included?
My server's manufaturer (supermicro) only provides RAID drivers for certain RHEL (CentOS) releases, 4.4, 5.2 and 5.9 are presently available. An accidental yum update recently took the server from CentOS 4.4 to 4.7, and abandoned the RAID driver. My choces are to reload 4.4 or go to 5.2. Since I will probably do the latter, is there a way to have yum just update within the distro, and not the distro version? Can someone ID the rpms I could exclude to be sure that the OS version remains static?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm using Fedora 15 with Gnome 3 on a 32 bit laptop. I noticed that there seems to be a huge memory leak issue with Gnome shell. When I restart it, it is around 20 MB. But it keeps rising, and after around eight hours, I noticed it was around 250 MB! I found a solution online that said to simply restart the shell if the gnome-shell memory consumption becomes too large. While this is fine as a temporary solution, I am looking for a permanent one. Is there a way to minimize/prevent the memory leak other than waiting for the next version of Gnome 3?

Using Synaptic and/or terminal is great and so easy, but i have noticed that applications are not always the latest versions that are in the repository ie cups for instance So if i wanted to download the latest app from a website, what is the best way to install, based on having an earlier version already installed. Is it better to just install over an older version or remove the older version, and then install the new version clean

I have just downloaded CentOS 5.3. The kernel version is 2.6.18.xx However, when I updated the kernel version has not changed. Still 2.6.18. Unless something went wrong with the updates. The most up to date kernel is 2.6.31.xx I was thinking shouldn't it update to this new kernel? On my Fedora 12 I have 2.6.31. However, I thought the kernel of 2.6.18 would have been updated as least a little.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have CentOS 5.4 installed with lighty and MySQL installed via yum. not a problem. The issue become when I'm having problem with the current mysql that I installed via yum which I believe its currently at version 5.1.42-2. So I'd like to upgrade it to the latest available version of mysql. Except I can't figure out whether to download the generic glibc32 version or just get the RHEL5 version or find the mysql enterprise version somewhere. So, not knowing what I'm doing, I downloaded the RHEL5 version since it's closer to CentOS 5.4. Except for whatever reason the mysqli is not installed or configured properly and I'm not sure how to fix it.
Any suggestion? Everything was working nicely when I used yum to install, except the problem with the version of mysql that's offered in the repository. So I'd like to request a suggestion on how to either somehow upgrade mysql using yum and there's a different repository that I didn't know, or perhaps download a proper latest and greatest mysql, install and have it configured so that mysqli work properly.
How do the version numbers compare? Are they identical? I have Iceweasel 3.5.13, does that mean I essentially have Firefox 3.5.13?

I would like to know how can I prevent from users with role user_r to connect to Internet with firefox.
In Firefox 3.6 on Ubuntu 9.10, certain sites seem to use bitmap fonts for any fixed-width fonts, but only at specific zoom levels. This site and other Stack Exchange sites are among the affected sites, and of course the default zoom level is affected. At unaffected zoom levels, I get the expected smooth curvy fonts. How can I make Firefox use the nice curvy smooth fonts at all zoom levels?

I'm using Emerald Theme Manager 0.7.2. Using Oxygen 0.1 as the engine, when I switch between Firefox tabs the Title Bar lags at times and displays the previously viewed tab/screen. If I click in the Title Bar, it then updates.

How can update using this firefox update. All the zypper/yast ect. only use my repositories that dont have 3.7a and I can not figure out what else to do. Google searches all just say use package manager. But how do you use a package manager for a file on your hard drive?
