CentOS 5 :: How To Keep Yum From Updating OS Version

Aug 3, 2009

My server's manufaturer (supermicro) only provides RAID drivers for certain RHEL (CentOS) releases, 4.4, 5.2 and 5.9 are presently available. An accidental yum update recently took the server from CentOS 4.4 to 4.7, and abandoned the RAID driver. My choces are to reload 4.4 or go to 5.2. Since I will probably do the latter, is there a way to have yum just update within the distro, and not the distro version? Can someone ID the rpms I could exclude to be sure that the OS version remains static?

General :: CentOS 5.3 - Updating To Next Kernel Version

Feb 7, 2010

I have just downloaded CentOS 5.3. The kernel version is 2.6.18.xx However, when I updated the kernel version has not changed. Still 2.6.18. Unless something went wrong with the updates. The most up to date kernel is 2.6.31.xx I was thinking shouldn't it update to this new kernel? On my Fedora 12 I have 2.6.31. However, I thought the kernel of 2.6.18 would have been updated as least a little.

CentOS 5 :: Updating MySQL To The Latest Version?

Feb 4, 2010

I have CentOS 5.4 installed with lighty and MySQL installed via yum. not a problem. The issue become when I'm having problem with the current mysql that I installed via yum which I believe its currently at version 5.1.42-2. So I'd like to upgrade it to the latest available version of mysql. Except I can't figure out whether to download the generic glibc32 version or just get the RHEL5 version or find the mysql enterprise version somewhere. So, not knowing what I'm doing, I downloaded the RHEL5 version since it's closer to CentOS 5.4. Except for whatever reason the mysqli is not installed or configured properly and I'm not sure how to fix it.

Any suggestion? Everything was working nicely when I used yum to install, except the problem with the version of mysql that's offered in the repository. So I'd like to request a suggestion on how to either somehow upgrade mysql using yum and there's a different repository that I didn't know, or perhaps download a proper latest and greatest mysql, install and have it configured so that mysqli work properly.

Ubuntu Installation :: Updating Apps - Remove The Older Version

Jan 15, 2010

Using Synaptic and/or terminal is great and so easy, but i have noticed that applications are not always the latest versions that are in the repository ie cups for instance So if i wanted to download the latest app from a website, what is the best way to install, based on having an earlier version already installed. Is it better to just install over an older version or remove the older version, and then install the new version clean

If you remove and older version of an application first, what is the best method for doing this and removing any residual files etc that might be left on your system?

CentOS 5 :: Yum - Force Specific Version To Be Installed?

Jun 25, 2011

I run a bunch of CentOS 5.6 servers, where we continuously deploy our software. Our software comes in self-made rpm packages from a network-local yum repository. As bugs happen in software development, I sometimes want to downgrade to the previous release, so force the installation of a specific version of the package.I tried the allow-downgrade plugin, but so far no luck. Neither yum update nor yum install seem to work with allow-downgrade. (It does not seem to do anything?). Does anyone have a working example for yum --allow-downgrade?

This is what I tried:
1) Show current yum version
[root]# yum --version

Server :: PTR Record Using BIND Version 9.3.3 On RHEL

Jan 29, 2010

I am using bind for DNS services on RHEL 5. The forward lookup is working fine. When I try to do a reverse lookup at the server, it shows the correct output but when I try lookup from Internet it shows something like - "mysite.com points to a.b.c.d, which has no d.c.b.a.in-addr.arpa PTR record"

Here are the files:
/etc/named.conf
options {
directory "/var/named";
statistics-file "/var/named/data/named_stats.txt";
};

controls{
inet 127.0.0.1 allow {localhost;} keys {rndckey;};
};
// Declaring reverse lookup zone

zone "mysite.com" {
type master;

Debian :: Force A Program To Use A Specific Version Of GTK When Compiling

Jul 15, 2010

I decided I was going to compile XChat from source today for "fun." What I ended up doing was spending a few hours getting it to compile, then find out everything didn't work the way I thought it did. I was under the impression that after I ran "sudo make install" I was "upgrading", when in reality I'm just installing a seperate version alongside the old one. Apparently I have to keep the old version so every program that was compiled with it will continue to work, so how do I:

1) Force a program to use a specific version of GTK when compiling.
2) Find where my version of GTK installed to.

I've asked some people and I've just been told to "learn LD_PRELOAD". I've googled and can't figure how I could even apply that to my current problem

Ubuntu :: Mint Kept Updating Xulrunner To A New Version Which Disable Firefox-Smooth-Scaling?

Apr 11, 2010

I recently deleted all my Software Sources that were under "Other Software" and all my "Authentication" because Mint kept updating my xulrunner to a new version which would disable Firefox-Smooth-Scaling.Therefore I deleted all my Software Sources that were under "Other Software" and Authentication, and forced Mint to only install the xulrunner which uses Firefox-Smooth-Scaling. Unfortunately, after I deleted the software sources and authentication, now I can't update my system properly and get error messages that keys are missing. I added some software sources back the "Other Software" (someone responded to a previous post of mine on which ones to add), and under the "Authentication" window I tried hitting "Restore Defaults", but it only added two keys. These are screenshots of my Software Sources windows.
