Ubuntu :: Lucid Kernel - Device Descriptor Errors

Apr 11, 2011

For the record, I'm having the same issue as the OP with Lucid with a backported 2.6.35-28 kernel and a Samsung scx-4623fw printer hooked up via USB. Same symptoms - lsusb hangs until the printer is unplugged, devices aren't recognized, etc. Dmesg output includes a bunch of device descriptor errors:

[603.091961] usb 7-1: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 9
[618.241335] usb 7-1: device descriptor read/64, error -110
[633.521986] usb 7-1: device descriptor read/64, error -110

I suddenly started having a bunch of USB issues (including complete system locks whenever I plugged in a logitech USB mic) around early march with the stock lucid kernel. Everything was fine before that.

CentOS 5 Hardware :: USB Device Descriptor Read Errors

Aug 20, 2010

I'm designing an embedded USB device. When I connect the device to the computer, I get the following messages:

usb 1-3: device descriptor read/64, error 2
usb 1-3: device descriptor read/64, error 2
usb 1-3: device descriptor read/64, error 2
usb 1-3: device descriptor read/8, error -71
usb 1-3: device descriptor read/8, error -71
usb 1-3: device descriptor read/8, error -71

Note that other USB devices work fine. I am fairly certain that the problem is with my hardware. I'd like info on what these error messages mean to help my debug. Searching Google I wasn't able to find any explanations about what these errors mean exactly.

I'm running Cent OS 5.4 with kernel 2.6.18-164.el5 on an i686

Fedora :: Usb 2-1: Device Descriptor Read/64, Error -62

Apr 23, 2010

I tried to get 3d hardware support in my FC12 install. I grabbed the latest appropriate drivers from the nvidia website for my Geforce 6800 XT graphics card. I changed the inittab file to boot to command line, ran the .run file as root and ran into a couple errors doing so.

I then proceeded to use yum (which i do like but this is a bad scenario for me thus far) to update my drivers to the suggested kmod-nvidia drivers that exist out there. Once all of the installation was completed I rebooted and got the following error displayed at the top of my screen after the fedora loading bubble disappeared. The system just seems to hand at this point....

"usb 2-1: device descriptor read/64, error -62"

I did a hard boot on the machine and tried again, this time i pressed the esc key to watch the interactive startup screen and noticed that after "enabling local filesysem quotas: [ OK ]" i get a

***Warning -- SELinux targeted policy relabel is required.
*** Relabeling could take a very long time, depending on file
*** system size and speed of hard drives.

This will continue with asterisks across the screen until eventually it stops and then I am stuck as to what to do from here on out. What could possibly be causing all of this mayhem?I have tried to use the fedora core 12 install cd to launch it into "rescue mode" and from the bash command line proceed with modifying my grub.conf to not use the "newly installed kernel (2.6.32.11-99.fc12.i686)" that was installed with yum during my kmod-nvidia driver installation.

Ubuntu :: No Space Left On Device Errors

Mar 16, 2010

I recently upgraded from Lucid to Maverick, which went fairly smooth. Then I upped my RAM with some new memory sticks (4Gb to 8Gb). Since about then, I'm seeing these errors in syslog:

Code:
Jun 6 22:23:52 howler console-kit-daemon[1224]: WARNING: Failed to add monitor on '/dev/tty2': No space left on device
Jun 6 22:23:59 howler console-kit-daemon[1224]: WARNING: Failed to add monitor on '/dev/pts/0': No space left on device
I also get errors when running "tail -f" as root:

Code:
tail: cannot watch `/var/log/syslog': No space left on device

I searched around and I found some other reports of the tail -f error, with the suggestion of increasing fs.inotify.max_user_watches. I set it to 16384, and that at first resolved the tail -f problem, but now I'm getting that error again even after upping max_user_watches.

I know swap is suggested to be approx. the same size as RAM, but with this upgrade RAM is now bigger than the 5.7G of swap.

Ubuntu Installation :: Getting Lucid Dual Boot On Hard Drive With Errors And XP

Oct 23, 2010

I'm trying to create a dual-boot system, and have been following the instructions here. However my hard disk has bad sectors, and GParted won't let me resize the Windows partition. It tells me to use ntfsresize with --bad-sectors as an option, after having done some checks, all of which I've done. I've successfully shrunk the NTFS volume in this way -

when I boot into Windows, it says the hard drive is the size I set it at. However, the Ubuntu installer and Gparted still see the Windows partition taking up the entire hard drive. So, for the installation, do I have to set the size of the volumes manually, or is there a way to make Ubuntu see what ntfsresize has done?

[i use Ubuntu linux 10.04 LTS - the Lucid Lynx] i tried to print a document and i got the following message from the "document print status (my jobs)": "There was a problem processing document 'take it easy' (job 400)" i tried to print other things but i got the same error. after any print request i sent the printer asked me to release the paper it took, and when i release it, it printed this:"Unable to open the initial device, quitting." i have "HP Device Manager" installed on my computer, and lately i tried to install a wireless printer (officejet 4500 g510n-z) through it, and it failed because the connection between the printer and my computer disconnected before the terminal finished the installation. i didn't try to print with the deskjet right after it but now when i try- it doesn't work, so it might have something to do with my current problem... also when i looked at the HP Device Manager i saw the deskjet printer icon marked with X so i used this program's option "Setup Device" and the X mark disappeared.. and it still doesn't work.

Ubuntu :: Lucid Won't Boot - Error: Can't Find Device

Sep 6, 2010

I switched to the linux-image-rt kernel a while back, and decided yesterday to switch back to linux-image-generic. Unfortunately, I couldn't remember how to do this properly, so I just uninstalled all of the linux-rt related packages and then changed the /vmlinuz and /initrd.img symbolic links back to what they used to be and rebooted. So now the machine gets stuck in a memtest whenever I boot from the HD. I'm having trouble figuring out how to fix things from a rescue CD. If I try chroot /mnt/hd (where my old system was), and then update-grub, for example, I get: /usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?). So, basically I'm completely lost, but also sure that a working system isn't more than a few simple commands away. Can anyone throw me a bone?

Ubuntu Installation :: Kernel Upgrade Errors After Fresh Install?

Jul 23, 2010

I just activated backports and partners and I got it.

-------------------

I just bought a newish asus x83vm-x2 and am dual-booting seven and lucid lynx. On my last two computers I had migrated completely to Ubuntu, but windows 7 has a few compelling features...Anyways- I'm having issues upgrading the kernel on my fresh install of ubuntu (not that it matters, but I installed via jump drive). In update manager, the kernel upgrades are grayed out.

In synaptic, I get these (current kernel version is 2.6.32.21.22 btw)-

Code:
linux-generic:
Depends: linux-image-generic (=2.6.32.24.25) but 2.6.32.21.22 is to be installed
linux-image-generic:[code]....

It appears as thought "linux-image-2.6.32-24-generic" is not in the repository... but if that were the case, you'd think that my machine would just auto-update to an earlier version. IDK- I'm confuddled.
