Ubuntu :: Low Graphics Mode - Intel 845G
Jul 30, 2010
Have a reasonably old HP D510 running onboard Intel 845G graphics, which has worked fine to date using Suse 10/11.x x86 and also have tried various Ubuntu breeds on it before, as well. Have just installed Kubuntu 10.04, and am having issues that irregularly, and apparently randomly, screen goes black and I get a message saying "Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode".
I OK this and get a messages asking me what I would like to do:
1 Run in low graphic for this session
2 Reconfigure graphic
3 Troubleshoot
4 Exit to console
5 Restart x
Basically, none of these work. If I click 2, there are a number of choices which don't work, can only cancel. Basically the only fix is a reboot, and it will again work for a 'random period of time'. Have never had this issue previously, so it is obviously something that has been introduced with 10.04? Briefly installed Ubuntu 10.04 prior to Kubuntu, and think I had the same prob.

! I'm thinking of buying a corei5-660 on a motherboard with an Intel H55 Express Chipset. Does anyone know if it's fully compatible with OpenSUSE 11.3? I mean video (that comes from the processor, not an off-board PCI), audio (HD Audio), networking (Intel 82578DC Gigabit), SATA Controller, USB, etc. I've tried to google but didn't find much info so I wonder if anyone is using or knows where I can find more info about it...
I have found this thread on the forums about the H55 chipset: Core i3 Intel Clarkdale graphic controller problem But the problems were facing on 11.2, I don't know about 11.3...

I've installed Suse linux 11.3 (kernel 2.6.34.7-0.5) on my brand new computer HP all in one 5130. Everything worked incredibly well : Wifi, wireless keyboard and mouse, sound, webcam.. There is only one remaining issue : I get a very poor resolution (1280x1024) instead of the 1920x1080 allowed by the screen. The graphic card is an intel chipset (HD graphics) integrated to an intel core i3 CPU. Here is (part of) the X11.org log :
Code:

I have just installed Ubuntu (9.10) and noted that in order to successfully run the trial off the CD I had to test in "safe graphics" mode. I have an NVIDIA GEforce 6600 GT card - which was discovered by Ubuntu in the first few minutes of the trial and so I activated the recommended driver and continued to test. After a successful trial I installed Ubuntu (dual partition Ubuntu / Windows XP), however, it seems the install didn't activate the required driver (as part of the process) and so I'm unable to get into my newly-installed Ubuntu at all. All I get is a flashing tty screen asking for my username and password - however it's erratic and won't recognise what I type. So - I'm stuck in a catch-22 as there doesn't seems to be a safe graphics mode option via the start (GRUB?) menu list.

My new motherboard has built in intel G41 graphics card. Problem is under ubuntu maximum resolution is something like 1300 x 1024, in windows the highets working is something like 1900 x 1200.How can I achieve the maximum resolution or near maximum on ubuntu 10.04, also note that I have the same issue on 9.10.I looked for the xorg.conf to try and manually set the resolution but the file does not exist in 10.04

I know that you can have a nice control center if you have nvidia or ati drivers installed. Is there such a thing for intel graphics (Intel GMA or HD graphics)?

I need to use my TV as a monitor via DVI.
Using Meerkat 64. Here's some specs:

Because the Physical ID is 2.1, I'm fairly certain this is the DVI port. Do I need a driver for this to work?

I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my Dell Latitude D430 that I use at work. I have it on my desk docked going to a Dell LCD Monitor. When I go into the monitor set up it says Unknown for the monitor and Laptop for the actual laptop display. Also, I have very low resolutions for the "Unknown" monitor.
I am trying to resolved this issue so that I have better resolutions on the external monitor and then I can try to extend the desktop between 2 screens.
I found something online about adding the intel PPA and I did that, but now what. There is no xorg.conf that I can find for 10.10.

I honestly have no clue how this happened, but compiz now refuses to start. I discovered that somehow GLX had been uninstalled and replaced by SWX (the software rasterizer - this gives Brian Paul as the OpenGL/GLX server vendor strings). Reinstalled GLX, currently have Direct Rendering and the proper vendor strings (SGI and Tungsten, I believe).Still nothing. OpenGL seems to be working fine, as Nexuiz runs pretty well.I tried running compiz --replace from the terminal to get any errors, but it just spits out "Falling back to default window manager", without so much as a hex code to tell me why--------Update---------Ran compiz --debug --replace to see if I could get anything else. It gives the following:Quote:taintsauce@the-****ing-fury:~$ compiz --replace --debugcompiz (core) - Debug: Could not stat() file /home/taintsauce/.compiz/plugins/libcore.so : No such file or directorycompiz (core) - Debug: Could not stat() file /usr/lib/c

I have just upgraded and now X won't start and remove xorg.conf etc doesn't fix it...
This is a nettop with standard Intel graphics - no NVidia chipset (inc Ion).
This machine has been upgraded through various versions so I suspect there may be an old file somewhere which is causing this.
This is what is shown in the log:

Just spent about 4 hours upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04 thinking it would fix my graphics problems. Basically I have no 3d acceleration of any kind, is there any way i can load the intel drivers? Because what I'm using now is really crappy.
[code]...
Can i just change something in my xorg to intel and it will load that driver ? I've tried the "hardware drivers" thing but it does not show anything.

I am totally new to Ubuntu but have been tinkering for a week now. Can't say I have figured a thing out, thank God for Google, Linux is just not for the novice user. I guess thats where Windows comes in but I really like the stability of Linux and the fact it is Open Source and free. Wish I was a cool programmer or someone who has worked with the OS for a while, that would make things a lot easier. Where can I study up and get a little more educated about what I am doing? Anyway hopefully someone can answer the driver question. Lastly is there anyway to get Hardware Acceleration if using an Intel i5 system?

PS i am able to login into single user and change xorg.conf

Purchased a slightly used T61 Thinkpad via a client of ours at work last week. I've been really happy with it so far, dumped 4GB RAM in it and have Vmware workstation running on it and all is well except the graphics drivers.
According to LSPCI the machine contains the device listed below.
Code:
X displays just fine and compiz works out of the box, but I'm only getting around 59 FPS with GLXgears. I do like to play the occasional game and what not, so i'm really hoping to get this increased. I've heard of running Tremulous on this card, so I imagine it can do it.
Is this low for this card?

Do Intel HD 3000 Graphics run out of the box on Linux? Or do I have to do some manual work to get it working? Does Intel develop open source drivers?
Are they faster than on Windows?
This would apply for any Linux distribution.

I am running kubuntu 9.10 on a dell inspiron 14 with an intel GM45 graphics card. When I run 3d games like Nexuiz, openarena and tremulous I get really random performance. Sometimes things are totally playable with somewhere between 50-80 fps and other times I get maybe 4 fps and everything takes forever to load. These effects persists between logouts, X restarts and reboots! I get no errors when I run things in console either.I never really play games much but when something doesn't work...

i'm trying since ubuntu karmic to set up a xorg.conf for a special purpose. I've a htpc connected to my tv. Intel GMA 4500, DVI->HDMI-cable connected, Lucid Lynx installed. When the machine boots with the TV powered on, everything is perfect. xrandr reports all valid modes on output "DP2". Without the TV powerd on, Lucid starts in the low graphics mode, with the funny zenity-message. So far, i managed to disable all useless outputs (VGA1, HDMI1, DP1, HDMI2), leaving DP2 enabled. I managed this by assigning outputs to monitors and adding Option "Ignore" "True" to the corresponding monitor-sections. My only remaining problem is, that the intel-driver reports no connected monitor on output DP2. The TV is connected, but shut off. Has anyone got a hint to tell the driver to ignore the presence of a monitor?

I have had continued issues with my graphics: [URL]... Now, after an update manager update, I have a new issue. My mouse cursor disappears when I use my external monitor beyond a given resolution. Also, my settings for the laptop monitor are incorrect (will not let me select the true laptop native resolution). I even had an instance when I had mirrored images, but saw the mouse pointer only on the laptop screen, but not on the external monitor. I also recently did the suggestion to
Code:
gksudo gedit /etc/default/grub
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="i915.modeset=0 quiet splash"
Which had caused issues when I was previously running Ubuntu in dual boot with WIN XP. I am now on standalone Ubuntu 10.04. I reversed the grub edit, but the problem persists. Currently, I have to keep my external monitor at a much lower resolution for mouse pointer to show up, or use the CTRL key to show mouse pointer location feature in higher resolutions. All other aspects of the higher resolution for the external monitor work well...just that my mouse cursor does not show up.

I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 on an Lenovo G560 laptop with Intel P6100. Everything seems to work fine except for the graphics. The screen goes blank when I enter startx from the console.
lspci shows the following for the graphics card : 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02) In xorg.conf, I've tried drivers 'vesa' which gave me low resolution, and also 'intel' which blanked the screen again. How do I configure this graphics card ? Has anyone else faced similar issues when installing Ubuntu on this graphics card?

I have Fedora 11. After my most recent update, I can't log in. Every time I authenticate, the logon window disappears, the screen goes black briefly, and then I am back at the log in window I entirely reinstalled, and then it worked, until I updated to the newest kernel then it didn't work anymore. Update: I now generated a xorg.conf with system-config-display --noui I manually removed and reinstalled xorg-x11-drv-intel with yum. It didn't work. By the way: now the start hangs on "Starting atd: OK" If I specify "vesa" in xorg.conf, then it gets past the point, but display doesn't load properly.

Installed Archlinux 32 and 64 bit (dual boot) with I946GZ onboard graphics 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82946GZ/GL Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02) Both oses work ok in the vt's and do use native resolution of wide LCD (with KMS enabled) When i start kdm both oses display distorted background image (of kdm) in th LCD's native resolution, DONT display the actual login window, and mouse won't move In the 64 bit system if i Alt Ctl F1 (to a vt) the display remains frozen on the kdm background, but the computer is responsive (e.g type 'init 6' and the computer reboots after few seconds etc)
In the 32 bit system the computer does not respond at all and appears frozen completely If i disable KMS (add 'nomodeset' in grub) most stuff works fine except the display only supports 720x400 in the vt's and 1024x768 1280x1024 in the desktop, and does not support opengl (kde desktop effects work ok with xrender though)
