Ubuntu :: Live USB Won't Save Changes?
May 13, 2010
I tried the guide on pendrivelinux, using Universal USB Installer and the image and Ubuntu won't save the changes.
Creating a "start-up disk" using the Ubuntu disk creator just made an install disk even with the 4GB for saving stuff ticked.
I have an Intenso 16GB USB flash drive.

I am hoping to install Ubuntu 11.04 onto my USB. (1 gb... all I want it for is to do virus scans and stuff for my windows computers....) The thing is, I did the Startup disk thing. But every time I boot off the usb it says "Try or install". I click try. I make a file on the desktop. Then I reboot and its gone! Why is this happening, and how do I get the files to save?

How can I make a usb live cd and save changes to the same usb stick?I have the unetbootin program and plan to install ubuntu on my 4 gig flash drive. What do I need to do to save the changes and preferences and even install a few programs to it. I essentially want it to behave the same way as if I had installed it to my hard drive except with a 4 gig memory limit.

I have a Windows laptop that isn't booting up anymore for some reason Safe Mode doesn't even work. Looking at what is printed out when it hangs, I did a search on google and it is some sort of HP laptop problem. Apparently the hard drive should still be OK, if only I can access it somehow. I was thinking maybe I could use one of those live Linux CDs to boot up. But I'm not too familiar with those. Would they be able to detect the laptop's DVD burner, and allow me to burn files off the NTFS partition to a blank DVD? I want to get my data off before I hand the laptop over to the IT department - who knows what they will do to it. So exactly which live Linux CD flavor should I use (my other working computer only has a CD burner)? And then would it be easy to burn a DVD after booting up the live Linux CD?

my mediacenter is attached to an beamer with the optimal resolution of 1280*720 ubuntu 10.04 doesnt offer me this revolution (on my intel 915 graphis controller). this means i have to add this resolution to the possible resolutions. first i used cvt
Code:
cvt 1280 720 60
and got this result:
Quote:
# 1280x720 59.86 Hz (CVT 0.92M9) hsync: 44.77 kHz; pclk: 74.50 MHz
Modeline "1280x720_60.00" 74.50 1280 1344 1472 1664 720 723 728 748 -hsync +vsync
then i added this to xrandr
Code:
xrandr --verbose --newmode "1280x720" 74.50 1280 1344 1472 1664 720 723 728 748 -hsync +vsync
and
Code:
xrandr --verbose --addmode VGA1 1280x720
now i can select and use the new resolution - until next reboot. after an reboot 1280x720 is again not available. even if i work with sudo - the resolution isnt there....

Config a CentOS iptables.I issued some iptables rules.the rules were effective at once. Then, I came with a "iptables-save", but the "/etc/sysconfig/iptables" file hasn't been updated, it still loads the defaults rules with CentOS after reboot.

I'm working on a Soekris net4801 that is running an unknown distro of Linux. The kernel is 2.4.29, and iptables is v1.3.4.
I can't work out how to save the iptables. I searched the whole system for files/folders containing the name "iptables" and got 3 results:
/user/local/lib/iptables
/sbin/iptables
/lib/iptables
I've tried iptables save, iptables-save and iptables save active.
"iptables save" and "iptables save active" give me an invalid argument error. "iptables-save" isn't a valid command. "iptables --help" gives me a list of valid switches, none of which have to do with saving.
how I can save the iptables?

I've done a good few ubuntu installations for friends and colleagues and now my Dad wants in on the action. His PC is more than capable of running ubuntu 32 bit BUT I've hit a brick wall I've never come across before. I've burnt a CD image of the 10.04 iso from [URL] on my ubuntu box and for some reason, his PC just won't boot from it. If I select the option to manually select the boot source, all I see is the hardware monitor telling me things like CPU temperature. As for the Live USB - nothing whatsoever. Is it possible that I've managed to corrupt the iso file somehow?

Live CD: I dowloaded the ISO, burned it to CD, booted from this CD. It starts to load and I can see the purple background with the loading icons. Everything seems normal. But instead of ending up with the login screen, it ends up with a screen that says 'Please remove all bootup media and hit ENTER' or something like this. So I hit enter and then it shuts off my computer. That's it.
Live Stick: So I tried another option and created a stick with 'usb-creator.exe' that is on the CD. Then I start from that stick, but all I end up is a line of 'Syslinux bla bla copyright 20xx-2011'. That's it. Then it does nothing anymore. The cursor is blinking, but no prompt or whatsoever and keyboard input doesn't do anything.
Now something weird: When I insert Live CD and Live Stick at the same time and then boot my computer, then it boots into Ubuntu. Obviously it loads the first parts from CD and then the rest from stick. Because when I'm then in Ubuntu and try to format the stick, it says it can't do so, because there's system files from that stick in use.

I just downloaded OpenSuse 11.1 64 bit live cd from it's official site.I have live usb creater in my xp box , with the help of which I successfully created live USB for fedora 11 earlier. Now the problem is whenever I try to create live usb using Opensuse live ISO image after extracting all files to usb , it gets failed. The same thing is happening with OpenSolaris 11 live cd iso image. Does this mean that live usb creater I have, was only foe Fedora distros?

I've got an old iMac g3 on which I'd like to install Ubuntu Dapper Drake. Here's the problem:I insert the disk in the computer.Keep pressing "C" till this comes out:Quote:"The default option is "live" bla bla bla but in case of problems use "Live video=ofonly"I write "Live".The orange progress bar appears, but the the screen becomes black.I still can hear sounds: the classic ubuntu log-in music, but I can not see anything: I guess the live has started, but the screen is just black.By pressing CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE I'm able to come back to shell.
Once rebooted, I try "Live video=ofonly".Again the orange progress bar, but then this message comes outQuote:"Failed to start the X Server, It is likely that is not set up correctly. Would you like to view the server output to diagnose the problem?"Even if I dont select anything, some random words appear in the screen, too fast for me to read them. Then I'm back to shell.I read here (that the problem is caused by Xorg and that the solution can but editing his configuration by using Quote:sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.confBut I just don't know when to do that: Ubuntu is not installed yet and there is only MacOS 9.2 on that machine.

Just got back to attempting to play with 10.04 using its Live CD. It consistently goes to the "Log In" page and not the Live CD page on running. I saw a Post specifying a F key to be pressed on boot-up to get to the desired starting point some time ago, but did not write it down. Some advice did say press Any Key but this does not seem to do the job. Tried to use the search function here but no joy. Can anyone remember which F key? Note that as a check, I tried to use 9.10 Live CD and this worked fine, so it is not a machine problem.

I am very new to linux but not to computers. The transition from Windows to Ubuntu was seamless, it is very easy to use and I really like linux so far, until it came time to save a file. I find it very hard to believe that every time you create a document of file that you need to be logged in as root to save it or at least that's what everyone is telling me.

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 in a virtual machine and trying to do some work with php. I'm using Bluefish editor to create a very simple file that will show the date on a web page. The problem is that I try to save the file and get the following error:
Error opening file '/var/www/today.php': Permission denied.
Obviously it's a permissions issue. So I followed the instructions found in this post:
[URL]
but alas, I keep getting the error.

I am have problems with: gedit, abiword, mv, cp, touch, and rename. The text file was created with 'gedit' and save out of frustration with the title of 'Unsaved Document 1'.I now wish to give it a name and save it.'gedit' and 'abiword' will not save it with the name "Annie Street Arts Collective Play List 5/11", they will save it as 'Unsaved Document 1'. gedit' has work flawlessly for me up until this incident.I've never run into this before, I don't know what to start looking for. What do I look for to fix what is broken?

Also read numerous threads and google search tips but no matter what I try it still results in having to open Alsamixer and manually mute the setting each time I launch Ubuntu.
