Ubuntu :: Places/Documents Loads Terminal Not Nautilus?
Nov 20, 2010I was trying out bash scripts to see how to mount NetGear readyshare. I can do so using Nautilus and selecting Network but I wanted to be able to do so from a script. I don't know how it happened but when I clicked on Places/Documents it opened a terminal instead of Nautilus. This applies to all the folders in the Places menu but I can still get Nautilus by clicking Places/Computer and below.
I'm using ubuntu 10.4, nautilus 2.30.1
Debian Installation :: Live CD Username And Password \ Loads Everything Then Presents A Login Screen?
Jul 17, 2011I just downloaded Debian's live CD .iso file. I put it on a USB stick and booted from it. It loads everything then presents me a login screen. I have no idea what the login and password is I've looked all over google and people said it was user: live pass: live or something like that. I've tried a lot of different combinations with no luck. So does anyone know the real username and password for this?

May 17, 2011This is a IBM T23 (10 years old)pentium3 1.1ghz640mb ram28gb hdd (contianing several bad sectors)intel graphicseverything works out of box (graphics, wireless, etc) on a live cdhowever after installation, upon boot, it displays "Error loading operating system" right after BIOS and before even goes into GRUB and is stuck there.Enter live cd, and choosing boot from harddrive does not solve the problem.Already did the CD check, which shows no problemdid a bit googlingturned out this could be an issue with a dying harddriveand sadly, it is the case, the harddrive on this 10 year old laptop is indeed dying D:However, installing windows xp posed no problem... (altho tons of driver issue, but anyways...)I have a few solutions in mind1). just use a usb stick as the replacement for harddrive2). get a new harddrive (not even sure what to get for this laptop D: )3). find a magical way to fix it :SWould definitely be glad to know a way to load this system on this existing harddrive for nowI was told earlier that there are ways to tell the system to avoid mapping the bad sectors.

Oct 20, 2010I'm having a hard time installing Ubuntu 10.10 (32bits). I load the CD and everything's ok throughout the installing procedure, but when the installation is over and it says it's gonna reboot it doesn't do it!
The screen resembles a terminal with a message like "the computer is going to reboot NOW!" but it could stay like that for hours. The keyboard is locked so I can't reboot by commands, and if I press CTRL+ALT+DEL it just reprints the same message. Therefore I'm forced to turn off my computer manually.
After that, the Ubuntu desktop doesn't load. The screen shows a terminal asking for my username and password to access the computer. No graphics at all.

Dec 27, 2009My terminal shows unicode squares (the little square with it's 2 byte unicode value inside it), whenever I press a control character while running a program (ex. cat or ping).See this example. the 0003 is when I pressed Ctrl+C, and the 001A is when I pressed ctrl+z.Can anybody tell me why this is or how to turn it off. This is inside a gnome-terminal session, though I don't think it's gnome-terminal.If, inside this exact same bash session I open screen (by typing "screen"), it doesn't do this anymore, and ctrl+c/z/etc is completely quiet.
Fedora :: Fedora Live Cd - Screen Goes Blank Right Before Login Screen Loads?

Mar 22, 2011The problem is as follows: I recently had a power outage whilst my computer was running windows. When I tried to restart the computer I received UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT on the classic blue screen of disobedience. To resolve this I've booted a live ubuntu disc (10.04 LTS), of course when I created an ext4 partition and then tried to install linux I received "error while copying files" around the 65% point of the install which has ultimately told me to create another cd, which since without a working OS I can't do.
With the above filaure in mind I looking into fsck, fsck.ntfs and testdisk both fsck couldn't access the partition and fsck.ntfs suggested I run chkdsk (which I thought fsck was the linux equivalent of).So I figure the next logical step is to try and install linux from the terminal of the cd-based instance of linux I'm running just now from a freshly downloaded iso.

This time I at least got to the desktop, however firefox will not connect to any website (and I've tried dozens)
However if i open up a terminal I can ping the websites that were not connecting, e.g.

So it does not appear to be a DNS problem (and other win boxes on my router connect fine)
Is it even worth proceeding with the F13 install at this stage?

Apr 14, 2010What I have noticed on several versions of Ubuntu, both 32 and 64 bit (including 9.10, 10.04 b2 and UNR 9.10) is that after the launch of Firefox (including the current 3.6.3 version), I continue to get a spinning cursor for more than 10 seconds after the FF window is present and ready to accept input. Sometimes I get it only when moving the cursor outside the FF window and other times it will be in the window, too. I have even noticed it persist for a short time after quitting FF. I think it's definitely related to FF because I don't see this occur unless FF is launched, not even when another browser (Chromium in this case) is launched. To add to the mystery, I see it in Ubuntu and Mint 8 xfce, but not in Ubuntu-based distros with simpler window managers like Mint 8 fluxbox or CrunchBang 9.04 (openbox). To try to get rid of this, I have tried various FF configuration speedups available from the Net - changes implemented through about:config. These do speed up FF, but they don't get rid of the spinning wheel.As far as I can tell, the spinning wheel has no impact on FF operation - it doesn't stop me from entering a url and accessing it, though perhaps it slows down implementation.

The mouse cursor shows up, I can move it around, and then it goes black again, and the mouse cursor shows up again. This repeats a few times until the cursor freezes. Ubuntu :: Trackpad Does Not Work When Desktop Loads
Sep 4, 2010So I have used ubuntu for about 2 years now, and this has never been an issue. Basically my trackpad(touchpad) on my laptop stops working when the wallpaper and other gui aspects load. The mouse works in windows and works in ubuntu for a few seconds while the screen is still black and gui is loading. So I know ubuntu does know it exists.
This problem occured after watching a movie and ubuntu froze up. Also while watching the movie I had the trackpad disabled, which might have something to do with my problem. (I have a hpdv6500 which has a button on the trackpad to disable it. I did no software tricks or hacks to do it). After resetting my computer the problem existed and persists every time I turn it on and off. So does anyone have any experience with such a problem or maybe how to reset the settings of the mouse?
