Jul 10, 2010I am not sure if cron (or crontab) runs when my machine starts up. How would I make sure this happens?

View 2 RepliesI'd like you to know that I'm completely new to ubuntu. Just install it a couple of days ago. I have a bit problem with startup here, everytime I change anything in System > Preferences > Startup Applications it just keep coming back to default. I unchecked Penmount Utility, and it's checked again after next boot. Same thing happen when I add Guake Terminal. When I reboot, it's not there anymore. So basically, it seems that I can't configure my startup programs.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed 10.10 yesterday, and now whenever I boot my computer it launches 3 or 4 windows on startup for apps that usually run in the tray (Rhythmbox, Pidgin, Skype, and the mounter for my memory card). I was wondering if there is a way to just launch the programs to the tray. It worked perfectly in Lucid.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have somehow gotten two instances of Mediatomb running on my Ubuntu 10.04.1 how to get rid of one of them. There is one copy running as a daemon on system startup - that's the one I want to keep. There is another copy running when I log in with my user account - this is the one I want to prevent from running.I have looked in my Startup folder in the GUI and also in my .profile script for my user account but I don't see any references to mediatomb there. Where else should I look?I think the daemon version is running via an entry in init.d, but other than where I've already looked I don't know how to find out how the second copy is getting initiated during login. It only seems to show up when I log in to the GUI on Ubuntu - not when I connect to the machine remotely via SSH.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am following directions to set up my Ubuntu Installation (8.10) for Netbook Remix. As part of the directions it asks me at the end to:
Add netbook-launcher (if using 8.10) to your startup programs. Go to System>Preferences>Sessions and add entry for this command.
I went to sessions to do it and see Netbook Launcher listed and selected to add it but it prompts me with the following menu:
Name
Command
Comment
What do I put in these blanks so that I can set this up? For Command it gives me the option to browse.
I'm unable to change startup programs. If I try and add or remove a program, any changes I have made seem to undo themselves. I suspect it might have something to do with being unable to save the session, but I really don't have a clue.
Just in case it makes a difference: I'm actually running Mint (Helena).
For a few days ago I turned on the Remember Programs thing in the startup manager. Now I can't turn it off. I use ubuntu 9.10.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have noticed a few problems when some screenlets are loaded before some others. I think that "Startup Applications Preferences" should have an option to arrange the order of their execution.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently made the switch from gnome to kde. After struggling for two straight days I finally have everything the way I want, and I must say that I am quite pleased with Kde. The one thing I want to do now is get my computer to start up without running printer applets and bluetooth and all that other stuff I don't need. I have had little luck finding any info on this one.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've found mentions of this problem in Lucid Lynx, but this is a recent development for my system, since I've been running Ubuntu since Gutsy Gibbon. On start up my gdm theme/icons appear for a second, but by the time I've entered my keyring password the theme reverts to the system default (what Synaptic package manager looks like). It also does not load my start up programs Gnome-Do and Screenlets. My theme only appears if I go into the Appearances menu, and Gnome-Do only starts if I pick it from the Accessories menu (and I've gone into Gnome-Do's preferences and clicked on "start GNOME-DO at login"). About once in a blue moon it will load everything correctly.
View 1 Replies View RelatedRecently I have had a run of random errors on boot up. Finally, the quit button, top right of the screen disappeared permanently. I am convinced it is because I added Evolution to the programs that start automatically when I login to Ubuntu (auto login). Evolution uses the Internet connection which hasn't been successfully established by the time it starts. In the past, this would crash Ubuntu. It seemed to be fixed by this stage, but maybe not. Is there some way of delaying the startup of a program in the automatic startup list - to give the rest of everything time to settle in - before it starts trying to use other startup resources?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI was wondering if there is any tool or program that stores a copy of frequently used files eg. Binarys, program library's etc. in memory so when they are requested by the OS they load instantly. I'm asking because I have a system with plenty of ram but very slow hard disks. Having programs like opera and java/eclipse load from ram would greatly speed up their start time. Ideally they would be loaded into ram in the background after I log in. Of course all writes made to these files would have to be made to the files on disk for obvious reasons.I don't want the entire OS in ram because it will not fit, just frequently accessed files.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI noticed that some applications are still in the startup applications list even after i have removed these applications.Would there be any app files left over anywhere / is there a command i can run to clean up the filesystem.Or is it just a case of removing them from the startup app list?

Is there a way in Linux that I can program the mouse to do certain things for certain programs? Like if I press the middle mouse button in one program it will act as an enter key and if I do the same thing in another program it will send a different keystroke? I'm trying to install bitcoin onto my computer, and the Linux version only comes in tar.gz, and I can extract it just fine, however when I put in ./configure using the command line...it doesn't work...so I checked the README file and it didn't mention doing that...it simply told me to run either /bin/64/bitcoin or to run /bin/32/bitcoin However when I try running first one, /bin/64/bitcoin, it simply says something about there not being a shared library...But when I try to run /bin/32/bitcoin it simply says "Permission Denied" and yes I tried running as root when I first saw that...didn't do any good.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI found a way to capture emails sent from my Drupal installation, and Fakemail seems simple enough. I can follow the tutorial. Since the application Fakemail needs to be running to capture the outgoing emails, it seems like a good candidate for xinetd, yes? I've found a simple config tutorial describing starting the service and what the parameters are for the service-specific configuration files. This got me this far,
Code:
# default: on
# description: This is a script to start the Sandbox app "fakemail"
service fakemail
[code]....
But the service is not starting up. Will someone help me with this config file? Or, recommend another application which uses a similar configuration like Sendmail so I can copy this The Fakemail application/service is started from command line like so,
# fakemail.py --host=localhost --port=10025 --path=[path_to_email_textfile]
I have a program that runs fine from the terminal, but when I put it into the Startup Applications it doesn't work. Where can I check the logs to see what the problems is? By the way, this is the command:

View 1 Replies View RelatedHello - installed 10.04 yesterday, Had previously dabbled, trying to switch over to Ubuntu full time now. Wanted to access the session manager, but when I scroll to System/Preferences, there is no entry for it, or for the startup programs manager. Also, I'm getting the following error when attempting to open the "windows" entry: Failed to execute child process "gnome-window-properties" (No such file or directory)
Did I somehow botch something in gnome which is now leading to the absence of the session manager as well as the inability to launch the "windows" manager?
can open the programs pe-install, but can't open other programs or install new programs
