Ubuntu :: 'unsave' A Session (list Of Currently Running Programs)?

Nov 6, 2010

System -> Preferences -> Startup Applications -> Options -> Remember Currently-Running Applications I have Skype added to the startup applications list. This works fine. After doing the above, two instances of Skype are starting up every time - and I have not checked the "Automatically remember ... " checkbox. I could not find a way to undo this. After doing the above again, three instances of Skype are starting up every time.

Ubuntu :: Create A List, From LiveCD, Of What Programs Are Installed On HDD?

Jan 4, 2011

I made this thread last night~[URL]... Because my Ubuntu failed, and i have no idea why. I hadnt done anything different or risky.. and Ive no idea what to do. So, It appears Im going to have to do a re-install. Which, I really dont mind too much... (especially with Ubuntu) But It will stink if i *again* lose all my bookmarks , and lose track of all my installed programs. The programs, not as much of an issue as the bookmarks in my browser.. I would like to know, If I can somehow access the HDD from the LiveCD, So that I can create just a simple text list of all programs installed on the hdd? I cannot access my HDD except through the LiveCD So is there a way I can do this? Some kind of simple command I can toss into terminal, and have it output me a text file of all programs installed? or something? I really am totally clueless on how I would be able to save my chromium bookmarks.

Ubuntu :: Running A Tidy Gnome-session Over X?

Oct 13, 2010

I have both a mac and ubuntu box sitting on my desk. I work on the mac and access the ubuntu box over ssh.Often I need the point-and-click interface of the ubuntu box, at which point I run gnome-session. The problem is that the top and bottom menu bars fill the full size available to them, which can cause me problems (I use two different-sized screens and the barsget hidden), and overall it looks very messy. I would therefore like to confine the gnome-session to a window, much like you get with vnc (or parallels if you're running a virtual ubuntu session).

Ubuntu :: How To Save Session And Remember Running Applications Between Thems

Feb 1, 2011

I used to use kubuntu last years, but I decide to give Ubuntu a try instead.A thing that was working on kubuntu's KDE by default, is that when you close your session, the system remembers what applications was you using, so in the next boot up they will be open exactly as it was.I would like to have this feature also on my Ubuntu 10.04, but I've been not lucky searching for the option to enable it.

Server :: Another Session Logged In But Running No Processes?

Jan 30, 2011

My University gives us access to a Linux server, named stud1.

but when trying to find out why I'm still logged in, I can't find it:

Code:

I thought that 'xrandr' displayed some text output but that behavior has changed (?). It seems to require an X display. Is there another way? Something I could incorporate into a shell script? (This is Fedora but that shouldn't really matter)

Everything works fine; No problems running WinXP from an ISO, etc. I have several Windows only applications which I want to run on the WinXP VM. I cannot see the programs I have downloaded when using Explorer for Windows.Ordinarily, in a WinXP only system, I just find the program to be installed and double click on it to start the automatic installation routine. In this case, I cannot see any of the .exe files used for the install.I have placed those downloaded Windows application in the same directory on my Ubuntu Box as where VirtualBox, the Sun Guest Editions and the CD Image of the Garmin Trip and Map system.I installed the Garmin system directly from and ISO of the CD I made using Brasero. It works without a hitch.Should I take the Windows e.e programs and burn them to a CD and then transfer them as ISO tback to the VM drive?

Ubuntu :: Compiling And Running Some C++ Programs (with G++ From The Terminal)?

Jun 7, 2011

so i've just been sitting here, compiling and running some c++ programs (with g++ from the terminal), I looked away for one minute to open a file that had just been written out (opened it with gedit if that makes a difference), now my terminal says:kbuildsyscoca4 running...so I'm wondering if anyone knows what this is about?hy it suddenly started running and why it has appeared on my terminal. I'm basically just curious as I though bash shells were entirely separate virtualizations of shells, and unrepresentative of other processes. i'm also wondering what kbuildsyscoca4 is/does (i've got gnome going on and generally gnome varieties of programs). I found a post from about a year ago mentioning the same thing, though no replies.

Ubuntu :: Bash For Programs Running In Terminal?

Aug 9, 2011

Trying to write a script for desktop launchers that are adaptable to screen resolution. Ideally, the program should:

1. Determine screen resolution:

if "a" use xdotool options window size 1305 x 869 px and move to 135,0
if "b" use xdotool options window size 1545 x 1019 px and move to 135,0

2. Check if program running:

if no, open program, and use "a" or "b" placement options, focus window
if yes, focus window

3. Close script and leave program open (if possible).

Problems arise when trying to use the script on programs that run from and hog the terminal
(e.g. brasero, gcalctool, nautilus)

Here the script will load the program, and nothing else (probably because it still occupies the terminal as it runs)

Code:

gcalctool && xdotool search "calculator" windowmove 135 0

This next command will cause the program to load, move, but it keeps focusing itself like xdotool is running the windowmove function constantly - it keeps focusing itself until script stopped.

Code:

gcalctool & xdotool search "calculator" windowmove 135 0

This had the same effect as the above code, but seems to work as a conditional subscript running when the process is running in the terminal - it just goes infinitely.

Code:

while [1] ; do xdotool search "calculator" windowmove 135 0 done exit

Is there some kind of "if, then" or "while, do" or some kind of conditional I can put in to the script ensure the window is moved only once if the program is running within the terminal? Is there a way to remove the program from the terminal from the script once it's been called?

Software :: Remote X Over SSH / Gnome Session Running On The Client Machine?

Oct 15, 2010

Running Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.04 over LAN; I can SSH -X into my server just fine, and am able to launch various applications (Nautilus, Gnome-Terminal, Disk Utility, etc) but I'd really like a Gnome desktop. When I've tried the various StartX commands and gnome-session, but something just isn't clicking. Is there a way to have a 'second' Gnome session running on the client over the first?

To pre-empt some obvious solutions; I don't wish to use VNC, the lag drives me nuts, and I'd like to keep my gnome session running on the client machine if possible. If it's not possible, that's fine; it just seems like there'd be a way to do it?
