I tend to watch the odd movie, and always use vlc. As such, one time I checked the box so that vlc would open by default. now however each time I go to open a folder, vlc starts up! How can I undo this?
View 2 RepliesI have been using ubuntu for a while and i like it a lot, im a web developer and i have windows xp installed in virtual box, i moved completely to linux and just use windows to test in ie, it had been a while since i didnt use windows and i had to use in the last few days and noticed how much faster it is, the thing that bothered me the most is when opening folders in the desktop or the recycle bin, in windows its instant, in ubuntu opening a folder takes a long time to open nautilus, is this normal or is my installation bad, any comments are appreciated, i dont want to abandon ubuntu, i really like it but it really bothers me that nautilus is so slow to open.

If the folder has more entries it take more time to load and if less no of entries then correspondingly less time . the delay in loading the folder varies due to reading of the folder entries in advance . The new panel layout and sidebar thingy looks pretty sweet at first glance, but I can't find a durn thing. :s But to the point, went to run World of Warcraft after the update and the launcher starts, then after hitting play a fatal error pops up.

The instruction at "0xF751D270" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read". And then of course the other Blizzard error nonsense. I know this isn't so much a Ubuntu thing, but has anyone else maneuvered around this or have any ideas for a fix?
After upgrading to 11.04, I noticed something strange, being that when I want to drag a file or folder from one Nautilus folder window to another which is not visible, I can no longer hold the item over said folder's taskbar button and wait for it to appear. It just shows the + for copy, and when I let go (which I have no choice but to eventually do), it creates a launcher to that item (I assume it's doing that, and not actually copying there, but the + has me unsure).
I've looked in Nautilus's preferences to see if this is some new behaviour that I can revert back to, but could find nothing there.
I'm of course using the Classic desktop with bottom panel being the taskbar. If you know how I can rectify this, please let me know, as the times I would want to create a file or folder launcher without the usual hassle would be rare, but I am constantly dragging stuff from one folder to another, and it would be a real pain to have to line up source and destination folders each time.
I was created one folder in linux with current time was 1978(For example). I was moved this folder to usb(FAT32 file format).While seeing this folder in window its not showing the folder time created time stamp, because the USB file system only support the year after 1980 . But again i am putting the same folder in linux ,its showing the correct time stamp.How is it possible? Because FAT32 only supports timestamp after 1980, but still its showing 1978 in linux system

1-open all files in a folder when drag and drop the folder on it
2-search and replace a statement in all open files

I have a Ubuntu box (10.10 x64) that i use for XBMC (a media center), everything works fine when i boot up and start adding network shares (the shares are on a Ubuntu 10.04 x64 Server). it doesn't matter if i use NFS or SAMBA to mount the shares, both work. BUT when i reboot i get problems The share mounts come up but to late, XBMC doesn't see the share when it starts.
The thing i see is : When i boot up the lights of my NIC (realtek 8111) are on and flickering, but just a few seconds before the login prompt comes up the lights are off. And then after 15 to 20 seconds everything comes up again, and the shares are mounted, but to late for XBMC (my mediacenter software) i've installed new drivers for my network card (removed r8169 and installed r8168 ) but the problem is still there.
Im running ubuntu 10.10 and i installed gdesklets and when i try to open it.it never starts im kinda new at all this so im not to sure what is going on.i have a hp pavilion dv7 laptop.

I installed GIMP recently, it worked for awhile, but now it will not open up even after the 'Starting GIMP...' appears. That goes and nothing happens. I've tried un-installing and installing via the software centre as well as via the terminal with no success. Will be happy to go through steps again if someone gives me some guidance.
I'm running ubuntu 11.04. from time to time, the unity launcher gets stuck in an open position, preventing me from clicking anything on the left side of the screen. this is terribly annoying. is there a *simple* way to change the properties of the icons in the launcher? I have there some custom application launchers that were automatically imported to the launcher during upgrade (they were in the top menu).
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've found that Abiword, which I prefer to Libre Office, when minimised does not remain arrowed on the launcher in 11.04, so it effectively can't be minimised. Can it be made to do this? I've clicked a few icons on the launcher like Brasero's and Synaptic's and found that they still all behave properly but I'm guessing there are other programs that have the Abiword glitch.

View 3 Replies View RelatedIn natty, if I hit the super key once, it opens the launcher, but it also opens the dash. And the launcher doesn't work the same when the dash is open. It takes two clicks on a program icon to open the program when the dash is open, and only one click when the dash is closed. Just enough to keep me from getting into a rhythm.Hitting the super key twice will open the launcher and close the dash, but only if you don't hit the super key twice too quickly. Is there some way I can configure unity so the super key (or some other key) opens the launcher but does not open the dash?

Another piece of information that may be relevant: this started happening immediately after I installed a GStreamer plugin, specifically the one for aac, xvid, mpeg2, and faad. I've since uninstalled this package, but Banshee still will not load.

if i click on System or Trash, from the unity launcher, it open movie player. only the player and not either of those places. when clicking Trash, the player opens and starts playing "4 non-blonds", which was probably the last thing sent to the trash. clicking System just opens the movie player not playing anything specific. why is this happening? why cant we access those places. I'm not even sure how to revert. would like not to have to.

To the Problem : I have downloaded Chromium as the web browser as I am not a fan of Firefox, but every time I launch Chromium... It launches into a random work space and not the one I am working in.. So I cannot open multiple Chromium windows.. So to find where it has launched it, I have to click work space switcher and find it.. If I click Maximise, instead of maximizing it to the work space limits... it makes it go over 2 seperate work spaces..
