Ubuntu Networking :: Setup Wake-on-lan With A Laptop?

I got this:

I must confess I didn't see any setting in the BIOS that directly referred to WoL, but I enabled something and hoped it should be right. Is this the problem? Is there any way to check if the hardware supports WoL other than looking through the BIOS?

Ubuntu Networking :: Refresh Network After Power Failure On Laptop?

Apr 24, 2010

have Karmic Coala runing on an IBM thinkpad X.41. Works great. My home network is all ethernet so I have a router , CAT5 cable to laptop.A coupleof times I've had power outages The laptop carries on as it's on battery power. When the power comes back , the router restarts, it reconnects after a few minutes but the laptop doesn't reconnect to the network seamlessly. On some other Linux distro's I've had running /etc/init.d/network restart will refresh everything. On Ubuntu I have /etc/init.d/networks but running restart In the end I needed to reboot the laptop to get the network back on.Perhaps this is a power management issue with the laptop ethernet card i.e losing power powers down the card and it never comes back up properly.

Ubuntu Networking :: AT&T 2Wire Router Will Not Work Without Ac Power On Laptop?

Aug 1, 2011

I just installed 11.04 on my laptop and the wireless works fine connecting to a AT&T 2Wire router when the ac power adapter is connected. When running on battery power I stay connected to the router but barely any information is transmitted. ie. if i restart the router connection on my computer I can load a web page like google.com then nothing else will work unless I restart the connection again. If I am right next to the router it will continue to work but very slow ( takes about a minute to load ......com when it only takes 2 seconds on ac power ). When I run windows 7 everything works fine when on battery power.Also every thing works fine on a linksys router with ac and battery power.Dell Inspiron 14R Processor: i5-2400MWireless Card: Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1030Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal

Ubuntu :: Laptop Won't Wake Up From Suspend?

Jan 5, 2010

All I want to do is to be able to shut the lid on my laptop, have it go into suspend like it already does, but upon opening it again, successfully start up again. It'll sleep just fine, but if you close the lid and try to open it again later, the lights will indicate it is starting up, but the screen won't initialize, and I am left with a blank, black screen.I've tried a line of code to enter into my menu.lst file, and it seemed like it should work, but it borked my computer and I had to manually reinstate the line of code it had before.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Wlan0 Resume On Laptop Wake Up?

I've just a had laptop meltdown which resulted in the acquisition of a replacement (HP635) sporting a realtek wireless NIC. Found the drivers and installed them and all is well. HOWEVER, the card is not activated on wake from sleep mode. This is kind of astounding to me. Every crappy windows version that I've used can handle this situation. Many searches, however have failed to yield any help. After every resume from sleep mode I have to run ifup to start wlan0. Surely this is not the only way it can be? I have to assume that I'm not getting something simple, and someone here can point out my failing. or if you can just sympathize. running 11.4 here using the realtek 8192 driver set to start at boot time. Though none of the other settings have had any effect on this problem.

Ubuntu :: Fglrx Freezing Laptop When Power Not Plugged In?

Dec 23, 2010

I've got a Dell Inspiron 1545 with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4300 series card. I need proper OpenGL support, so it appears I need the fglrx driver. After I install it, I experience very odd freezes related to the power cable:

- It freezes if I rapidly take the plug in and out a few times

- It freezes if I run on battery power for a random amount of time between 10 and 20 minutes. This happens if I boot up on battery power, or if I take out the plug while it's on (assuming the first kind of freeze doesn't happen)

EDIT: I have changed absolutely nothing about the drivers, but now those specific freezes don't happen. Instead, I just got a random freeze, while the power cable was in and not being touched.

General :: Laptop Freezes When On Battery Power

Jun 1, 2011

I've got a problem with my laptop and I finally decided to try to solve it. My computer sometimes (not everytime) freezes. It's just when I'm using battery power. I figured out that this is not connected with some specific action (e.g. some app crash), it can freeze 1 minute after start or 10 minutes, I think it's random. I've checked my /var/log/messages.log file and these are the last messages before freeze (exactly at 9:16:15):

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Disable 3D (dri) In Lucid / Switch Off 3d Dri On Laptop To Save Power?

Jul 25, 2010

I want to switch off 3d i.e. dri on my laptop to save power. There is a bug in the intel video driver that makes it generate excess wakeups and thus increase power consumption. I don't use 3d so this is very annoying.

I have tried modifying /etc/X11/xorg.conf to insert an "NODRI" option in the "Device" section and have commented out both of the "load dri" commands in the "Modules" section. No go. When I look in the xorg log, these changes are seen but not acted on. The system appears to have hardwired defaults set somewhere which are difficult to override. It appears to be a new issue because with Karmic one still had control with xorg.conf.

Just generally I don't like changes like this because it is not documented on the wiki where and how to change the defaults in Lucid. Linux was supposed to be easily configurable so IMHO this is a step backwards.

Ubuntu Installation :: When Pull The Power Cable From The Laptop Screen Freezes

Aug 11, 2011

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T520 laptop with Nvidia NVS 4200m Graphics card. I installed Ubuntu 11.04.

Before I installed Ubuntu 11.04 I had went to my bios and disabled Nvidia Optiums and changed the graphics to Discrete Graphics. Then inserted my Ubuntu 11.04 CD and installed.

With this I had gotten unity to work. However when I pull the power cable from the laptop my screen freezes. Also if press "FN"+ Home or END to change the brightness of the screen my screen freezes and no longer able to move the mouse or press anything on keyboard.

Did anyone ever run into this problem and or fix this issue? I can get the graphics working properly with Ubuntu 11.04 with Unity with a Nvidia NVS 4200m graphics card.

Ubuntu :: Using Autofs To Wake Samba Server Over Ethernet

Sep 20, 2010

I'm trying to set autofs up to wake a samba file server whenever I want to use it. I found this page which apparently demonstrates how to do it with NFS. With a bit of modification I've managed to come up with this:

Code:
/etc/auto.wake
#!/bin/sh
hostsrv=<server ip address>
hostmac=<server mac address>
opts="-fstype=cifs,rw,credentials=/etc/samba/.creds"

netcat -w 5 -z $hostsrv 445
status=$?
if [ $status -ne 0 ]
then
/usr/sbin/etherwake -i $hostsrv $hostmac
sleep 60
fi

/bin/echo -n "share"
/bin/echo -n -e " "
/bin/echo -n "$opts"
/bin/echo -n -e " "
/bin/echo "://$hostsrv/share"

Now, I've added this line to auto.master

Code:
/server /etc/auto.wake --timeout=60 --ghost
and restarted autofs
Code:
sudo service autofs restart
It wakes up the server successfully but then when I wait 60 seconds and browse the /server directory on the client the share doesn't appear at all.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wake-on-lan With Shutdown Computer?

Dec 11, 2010

This isn't stricly an Ubuntu question, but it is in the cause of an Ubuntu-powered home server Essentially: does wake-on-lan work if the computer is Shut Down (ie to all intents and purposes 'off' except for the hardware switch on the back), assuming that the motherboard and network interface (which in my case are one and the same) support wake-on-lan?

Also, if wake-on-lan is turned on, will this mean power going to anything other than the network interface (e.g. will PSU, CPU, case fans still be on?)Finally, will all of this work on Ubuntu 10.10 (assuming that the computer components are compatible)?

EDIT: Just to be clear, the Ubuntu system will be receiving the wake-on-lan 'call' (from a Squeezebox, though from my very limited knowledge of this stuff I don't think the source matters)

I read this thread: [URL] but I'm confused about what linmix is saying. Is there a way to get the power key to do the equivalent of what it would in Windows?

I don't find this an essential task, but it would make life a lot easier.

Edit: I mean Super Key not Power.
