Ubuntu :: Keyboard Settings Freaking Out?

Oct 7, 2010

I recently changed my keyboard layout to US International so I could learn to type in French, but after that, I wanted to switch it back to plain old US default (or whatever it's called...) I went back in and changed it the same way I did the first time, and it works fine until I shut down the computer. When I log back in after booting up the computer, the keyboard layout resets itself to US Int. again. I've tried deleting it from the list, moving it down, applying normal US to the entire system, and resetting the keyboard layout to it's default state, and yet it still resets itself. Anyone know what's up? I'm running Lucid on an HP Pavilion notebook.

Ubuntu :: Keyboard Settings Won't Stay After Reboot?

Mar 19, 2010

I'm using Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04 in Acer Aspire One together with Windows XP (both on different partitions). The trouble since installing Ubuntu has been that my keyboard has scandinavic layout which includes "" and "" keys. When I assign the layout in Ubuntu's as "FI" instead of "USA" everything is fine. After reboot for some reason the changes made won't stay and I have to change the keyboard layout manually. If I remove "USA" from the list after reboot it'll appear to the list again!

I've tried to create /etc/X11/xorg.conf file with the keyboard configuration code, but it has no effect for the situation. I've tried also command:

Code:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure console-setup This has no effect also.

I'm starting to be frustrated for the situation. I really enjoy using Ubuntu instead of XP but this just doesn't make sense that the keyboard layout won't stay on.

Ubuntu :: Keyboard And Touchpad Settings - Options Insufficient

Jun 1, 2010

I've installed Netbook Remix on a partition on my Advent 4211 (MSI Wind clone) XP netbook. It is the first time I have ever used Linux, apart from abortive efforts to install various distros on an old laptop a few years ago (wifi wouldn't work).

(1) I am a touch-typist and would like to set the Shift key to RELEASE the CapsLock, as on old manual and electric typewriters, which is how my other Windows keyboards are set to operate, but the nearest option (out of so many ) in Ubuntu seems to be "Pause CapsLock", which is no good.

(2) I need to DISABLE the touchpad - the nearest option seems to be "Disable while typing" - inadequate for me, trailing thumbs are causing havoc I like this OS (it seems especially neat with the latest Chrome) but those two "shortcomings" are constant nuisances.

Ubuntu :: 9.10 - Missing Compiz Config Settings

How to change the "Cube" into a "Cylinder" and how to enable floating windows (windows that seem to hover just over the cube when it is rotated. Were these eliminated? They were both available in 9.10.

Ubuntu :: New Compiz Settings Manager Missing Maximumize

Sep 22, 2010

I just updated to Ubuntu 10.04 and am in love with it. However, when I tried to restore everything I had on my compiz, I realized that a integral part for me was missing. The "maximumize" feature is gone. This is the feature that makes a window fill up all the space it can without interfering with other windows, essentially making it like the windows 7 tiling feature, only better since you can do it with multiple windows and in any way you want. This was in the compiz settings manager in 9.10.

I've tried reinstalling gnome-control-center and all related pkgs, so it's a configuration problem of some sort. I see this if I enter a Unity session, Gnome Classic, or Gnome-Session.Here's a screenshot of what it looks like:

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 - GNOME Appearance Settings Missing The Interface Tab?

Apr 21, 2010

I tried out the 10.04 beta in VirtualBox, and the tab for Interface in Appearance Settings was gone. This tab allowed you to edit the appearance of Toolbars in Ubuntu. You could edit whether Icons showed up in the toolbar buttons and whether Text shows up beside it. This is kind of a minor annoyance for me; is there any way to edit this option outside of the appearance settings? I'm sure there is (like editing some config file or GConf), but I'm not sure where.

OpenSUSE :: KDE 4.4 And Thinkpad T61 Keyboard Layout - Settings Interfering?

Feb 16, 2010

I recently switched my openSUSE 11.1 install from KDE 3 to KDE 4.4 via the one-click-install from [URL]... I was trying to add a German keyboard layout to the default US layout. But as soon as I enable keyboard layouts (via Configure Desktop-> Language & Regional -> Keyboard Layout -> Enable keyboard layouts), the default layout gets messed up (arrow, pos1, end keys etc. no longer work). I'm running openSUSE 11.1 on a Lenovo Thinkpad T61. Several keyboard layouts worked fine with KDE 3. Could it be that some KDE 3 settings are interfering with the KDE 4 settings?

OpenSUSE :: Personal Settings - Global Keyboard Shortcuts

Jan 28, 2011

I'm new to Linux. I'm running openSUSE 11.3 with both the Gnome and KDE desktops installed, but so far I'm only using Gnome. I was looking for a way to assign sound volume increase/decrease to some keyboard keys instead of having to click on the speaker icon at the bottom of the screen. I found what I included in the Title of this message. Under the Global Keyboard Shortcuts was an item for each increase and decrease sound volume. These were set to (I believe) meta+ and meta-, respectively.

I changed them to F12 and F11, respectively (to match my Apple keyboard). After the changes, I started a game which takes over the entire screen (which is why I wanted to assign the volume to keys in the first place) to see if the changes worked. They did not! So, I tried to go back and change them to something else and now I can't even access Global Keyboard Shortcuts at all. I keep getting the following error:

Sorry - System Settings
Failed to contact the KDE global shortcuts daemon
Message: Could not get owner of name 'org.kde.kglobalaccel': no such name
Error: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NameHasNoOwner

What's up and how do I recover from this (if I even care)? Also, how do I assign volume increase/decrease to keys?

Ubuntu :: Format Cption And Take It All Back To The Original Settings, It Says That C: Is Too Small Or Missing?

Oct 6, 2010

Seems that i have totally ****ed up my sony vaio (vgn-fz21z). I've been doing some partitioning and formatting without really knowing what i was doing. Now it is a mess. The vaio comes with pre-installed windows vista, which is no longer installed. I want it to be.Ubuntu 10.4 is installed. In grub I can choose vista but that is only vaio recovery tool. Which is not working. When I try the format cption and take it all back to the original settings, it says that c: is too small or missing.

I also have some cd:s with windows 7 and xp on, but they can't be read. Now the vaio is not even accepting my ubuntu live-cd. I have nothing of importance on the computer, so there would be no problem re-formatting the whole thing. Can it be done? I would prefer is the vaio recovery tool could be left untouched, it has its own partition. I guess I'm asking: is there a way from inside ubuntu to make a total system re-installation, get rid of different partitions and reconstruct c:, so win can be installed again?

Debian Hardware :: Synaptics Settings Missing After Upgrade?

Feb 3, 2010

after an upgrade today (it's been about a week since last upgrade), synaptics forgot all settings I've set in /etc/hal/fdi/policy/11-x11-synaptics.fdi, although the file is still there. I can re-enable the desired settings via gsynaptics (more or less, because gsynaptics doesn't give me the option of two finger horizontal scrolling but that's no big deal), however after a restart it forgets the settings as well. There are some synaptics-related errors in /var/log/Xorg.0.log, but I don't understand them. Here's the snippet (the second half is maybe not synaptics-related but mouse-related, I'm not sure):

(II) config/udev: Adding input device "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad" (/dev/input/event8)
(II) LoadModule: "synaptics"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/input/synaptics_drv.so

Fedora :: GNOME Window Settings - Missing In FC12?

Nov 18, 2009

noticed that Fedora 12 made some odd design decisions for default GNOME settings, and I couldn't locate the System->Preferences->Windows menu item to change them back. The design options I'm talking about:

* No icons in menus (System menu for instance has no icons, though there are icons under the Preferences and Administration sub-menus... the root System menu though has none)

* Icons on toolbars are configured so the label text appears to the right of the buttons, so this makes File Explorer in Nautilus look funny to me. I like the text appearing beneath the icons like it has always been up until now.

why the Windows configuration has been removed from Fedora 12? The control-center package provides the bins for all the preferences items except for gnome-window-settings; so is it upstream that did this? Anyway, I had to dig around in the gconf-editor to find where the window settings are kept so I could change them "manually", since the Windows tool is gone now. For anyone else who wants to know, it's under /desktop/gnome/interface in the gconf-editor (namely, keys toolbar_style, buttons_have_icons, and menus_have_icons are the ones I changed).

Ubuntu :: After Upgrade To 10.10 - Missing Keyboard Layout Indicator?

I use several keyboard layouts all the time. In all previous versions of Ubuntu I could see which one is current. After upgrade it is not showing anymore -- there is just an irrelevant picture. If I click on it -- I see current layout name -- but not other layouts. There I need to select "Keyboard Preferences" in order to see others. Because I often switch between layouts -- this simple feature is VERY important. Why it is broken in Ubuntu 10.10?

Ubuntu :: Change File Permission Settings To Force All Documents To Inherit Parent Document Settings?

Aug 21, 2011

i have a computer with 3 users on it, and a folder using samba that everyone on the network has access to. Lets say that, the folder is stored in /etc/sharedfolder. What happens is, when user1 puts a folder in it, then logs off, user 2 attempts to modify it and fails, because permission is set to 755, and they are not in the same group. (even if they were, it should still need to be 775) Anyway, my current solution is, every 5 minutes a crontab changes permission like so: chmod 777 -R /etc/sharedfiles && chown useradmin:superadmin -R /etc/sharedfiles Which works, but seeing as there is getting close to a gig in there, this is a bad solution, as it eats up the computers resources. Solutions that i think might work:

1) create a script that only changes permissions that need be changed.
2) change file permission settings to force all documents to inherit parent document settings
