Ubuntu :: GConf Proxy Settings Not Reflecting 9.10 Server

Mar 16, 2010

I'm running a Ubuntu 9.10 server with Openbox as the WM. I'm have set the proxy and http_proxy settings at /system/prosy and /system/http_proxy using gconf-editor. The settings seem to stick in gconf. The gnome-settings-daemon seems to be running fine. The problem is firefox-3.5, apt etc does not recognize the gconf proxy settings. I do not understand why firefox does not honor these settings.

Ubuntu :: Bash Script To Edit Gconf Settings?

Jul 8, 2011

I've been trying to write a bash script that will change the gconf settings for docky. The goal is to make it have a setup similar to Elementary OS or Pinguy OS... that means one docky instance on the bottom and one on the left. I just can't seem to get the commands working right at all. This is one setting I have been trying to change but every time I get an error about primitive types.gconftool --type List --set /schemas/apps/panel/general/toplevel_id_list [top_panel]

Ubuntu :: Moving Gnome-panel Gconf Settings From One Computer To Another

Jan 10, 2010

I have a bunch of gconf settings that I change by default when I install Ubuntu on someone's machine and thus I've created a script to make it easier after a fresh installation. Here is a list of changes I make so far:

[Code]....

However, I'm looking to remove the top panel and have only the bottom panel like I have set up on my machine. The gconf settings seem to be pretty complex and I'm not sure which keys I should be changing to remove the top panel and include the settings I have currently for the bottom panel (e.g. Menu Bar | Shortcuts | Window List | Notification Area | Clock)

Ubuntu :: Missing Gconf-editor Options?

Jan 29, 2011

I was trying to make Gnome display the date in a better format. I tried using gconf-editor as described in the thread at [URL], but I also found that apps > panel> default_setup > applets > clock had no prefs item.

Unfortunately, the solution which worked for quixote (stop running as root) didn't help me as I was running as the only account I've set up on the system, and all of the files in ~/.gconf are owned by that user.

Does anyone know what else could cause options to vanish like that? I'm running Gnome 2.32.0.

Ubuntu :: Gconf-editor Missing Ftp Entry?

May 2, 2011

For some reason my gconf-editor does not have a ftp entry. (/desktop/gnome/url-handlers/ftp)This is annoying as it sets all unknown urls to firefox. I always liked Nautilus as the default.

I tried creating a %gconf.xml file to $HOME/.gconf/desktop/gnome/url-handlers/ftp/ and still no luck.

Ubuntu :: Gnome-panel Doesn't Start On Login / But Gconf Settings Look Correct

Sep 5, 2010

I installed avant-window-navigator and followed these instructions to remove gnome-panel from startup: URL...However I have since uninstalled AWN and now cannot get gnome-panel to load at startup.I think I have put my settings back where they should be -- looking at them in gconf-editor:

1. desktop > gnome > session, the required_components_list is [windowmanager,filemanager,panel]

2. desktop > gnome > session > required_components_list, the panel value is "gnome-panel"

Yet gnome-panel does not load at startup. Any ideas why?Clarification: I can get gnome-panel to load by listing it under Startup Applications, but I am curious why it won't load via the gconf settings.

Debian Hardware :: Synaptics Settings Missing After Upgrade?

Feb 3, 2010

after an upgrade today (it's been about a week since last upgrade), synaptics forgot all settings I've set in /etc/hal/fdi/policy/11-x11-synaptics.fdi, although the file is still there. I can re-enable the desired settings via gsynaptics (more or less, because gsynaptics doesn't give me the option of two finger horizontal scrolling but that's no big deal), however after a restart it forgets the settings as well. There are some synaptics-related errors in /var/log/Xorg.0.log, but I don't understand them. Here's the snippet (the second half is maybe not synaptics-related but mouse-related, I'm not sure):

(II) config/udev: Adding input device "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad" (/dev/input/event8)
(II) LoadModule: "synaptics"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/input/synaptics_drv.so

Fedora :: GNOME Window Settings - Missing In FC12?

Nov 18, 2009

noticed that Fedora 12 made some odd design decisions for default GNOME settings, and I couldn't locate the System->Preferences->Windows menu item to change them back. The design options I'm talking about:

* No icons in menus (System menu for instance has no icons, though there are icons under the Preferences and Administration sub-menus... the root System menu though has none)

* Icons on toolbars are configured so the label text appears to the right of the buttons, so this makes File Explorer in Nautilus look funny to me. I like the text appearing beneath the icons like it has always been up until now.

why the Windows configuration has been removed from Fedora 12? The control-center package provides the bins for all the preferences items except for gnome-window-settings; so is it upstream that did this? Anyway, I had to dig around in the gconf-editor to find where the window settings are kept so I could change them "manually", since the Windows tool is gone now. For anyone else who wants to know, it's under /desktop/gnome/interface in the gconf-editor (namely, keys toolbar_style, buttons_have_icons, and menus_have_icons are the ones I changed).

Ubuntu :: New Compiz Settings Manager Missing Maximumize

Sep 22, 2010

I just updated to Ubuntu 10.04 and am in love with it. However, when I tried to restore everything I had on my compiz, I realized that a integral part for me was missing. The "maximumize" feature is gone. This is the feature that makes a window fill up all the space it can without interfering with other windows, essentially making it like the windows 7 tiling feature, only better since you can do it with multiple windows and in any way you want. This was in the compiz settings manager in 9.10.

General :: Why Does Gconf-edit Not Work To Change The GDM Icon

Jan 26, 2011

So I have done some googling and experimenting to change the GDM icon (Ubuntu 10.04) and have found the following ways:

UbuntTweak
Replace /usr/share/icons/LoginIcons/apps/64/computer.svg with your own svg
Change the gconf config setting /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/logo_icon_name to be the name of your icon in the theme. Then copy that file to the icon theme path: /usr/share/icons/LoginIcons/apps/64/.

I have gotten #1 and #2 to work. I am not sure how UbuntuTweak is actually doing it's magic (but would love to know). I do not like #2 as it seems messy and what not.

I can not get #3 to work. I have found post after post that says it should. I have tried editing the gconf DB in multiple ways:

gksu gconf-editor
gksu -u gdm gconf-editor
sudo -u gdm gconftool-2 --set --type string /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/logo_icon_name MYICONFILE
sudo gconftool-2 --set --type string /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/logo_icon_name MYICONFILE

And while all of those methods show that the value has been edited NONE of them actually change the icon (did a service gdm restart to check).

Given that:

The official docs state that this should work By replacing the computer.svg file it does work (so I know I am copying my file to the correct path)

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 - GNOME Appearance Settings Missing The Interface Tab?

Apr 21, 2010

I tried out the 10.04 beta in VirtualBox, and the tab for Interface in Appearance Settings was gone. This tab allowed you to edit the appearance of Toolbars in Ubuntu. You could edit whether Icons showed up in the toolbar buttons and whether Text shows up beside it. This is kind of a minor annoyance for me; is there any way to edit this option outside of the appearance settings? I'm sure there is (like editing some config file or GConf), but I'm not sure where.

Ubuntu :: Format Cption And Take It All Back To The Original Settings, It Says That C: Is Too Small Or Missing?

Oct 6, 2010

Seems that i have totally ****ed up my sony vaio (vgn-fz21z). I've been doing some partitioning and formatting without really knowing what i was doing. Now it is a mess. The vaio comes with pre-installed windows vista, which is no longer installed. I want it to be.Ubuntu 10.4 is installed. In grub I can choose vista but that is only vaio recovery tool. Which is not working. When I try the format cption and take it all back to the original settings, it says that c: is too small or missing.

I also have some cd:s with windows 7 and xp on, but they can't be read. Now the vaio is not even accepting my ubuntu live-cd. I have nothing of importance on the computer, so there would be no problem re-formatting the whole thing. Can it be done? I would prefer is the vaio recovery tool could be left untouched, it has its own partition. I guess I'm asking: is there a way from inside ubuntu to make a total system re-installation, get rid of different partitions and reconstruct c:, so win can be installed again?
